the da vinci code
passage 1Two years ago this month, Doubleday published a historical thriller with an announced first printing of 85,000 and high hopes that a little-known writer named Dan Brown would catch on with the general public.“We surely expected to have a huge success, but I don’t think anyone dreamed it would become a historic publication,”(1) says Stephen Rubin, president and publisher of the Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group. If the Harry Potter books stand as the essential popular read for young people, then The Da Vinci Code has captured the crown for grown-ups. A word-of-mouth sensation from the moment it came out, Brown’s controversial mix of storytelling and speculation(2) remains high on best-seller lists even as it begins its third year since publication.Twenty-five million books, in 44 languages, are in print worldwide and no end is in sight. Booksellers expect The Da Vinci Code to remain a best-seller well into 2005. A planned film version by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard should bring in even more readers. And at a time when consumers are supposedly minding their budgets, sales for the $24.95 hardcover have been so good that Doubleday still has set no date for a paperback.(3)“It’s been our No. 1 fiction book for two years in a row, and I can’t remember another time that happened,”said Bob Wietrak, vice president of merchandising for Barnes & Noble Inc. “People come into our store all the time and ask for it or ask for books that are like it.”Thanks to The Da Vinci Code, about the only books that seem able to keep up are Brown’s previous novels.(4) Deception Point, first released in 2001, now has 3.7 million copies in print, according to Simon & Schuster, Brown’s previous publisher. Angels and Demons, published in 2000 and featuring “Da Vinci” protagonist Robert Langdon, has more than 8 million copies in print. The unprecedented success of The Da Vinci Code has been helped by wide access, with the book on sale everywhere from Wal-Mart to airports to supermarkets, often proving more popular than the mass market paperbacks available at the same outlets. The Da Vinci Code has also thrived(5) during a time when both literary and commercial novels struggled, when a tight economy, competition from other media and election-year tensions drove the public to nonfiction works or away from books altogether. Publishers and booksellers say Brown’s novel has worked by combining narrative excitement and provocative—and disputed—historical detail.1. When The Da Vinci Code was first published, DoubledayA. hoped that it would become a historic publication.B. only expected to sell no more than 85,000 copies.C. had great confidence in the book and its author.D. announced a conservative printing of the book.2. The Da Vinci Code caused dispute most aboutA.its theme.B. its writing style.C. Dan Brown’s popularity.D. the historical details in the book.3. Doubleday only sells the hardcover The Da Vinci Code becauseA. the consumers are supposed to control their budgets.B. the price of the paperbacks is too low for great profits.C. the book is so popular that readers don’t mind the price.D. the film version is expected to be more popular than the book.4. Angels and Demons sold well becauseA. it has the same protagonist as The Da Vinci Code.B. it was published earlier than The Da Vinci Code.C. it was Dan Brown’s first story.D. it was written by Dan Brown.5. According to the last paragraph, during the time of tight economy,A. people were easily distracted by other media.B. The Da Vinci Code was an exceptional success.C. literary novels had to fight against commercial ones for market.D. the public had no other choice of entertainment but nonfiction works.passage2The University in Transformation, edited by Australian futurists Sohail Inayatullah and Jennifer Gidley, presents some 20 highly varied outlooks on tomorrow’s universities by writers representing both Western and non-Western perspectives. Their essays raise a broad range of issues, questioning nearly every key assumption we have about higher education today. The most widely discussed alternative to the traditional campus is the Internet University—a voluntary community to scholars/teachers physically scattered throughout a country or around the world but all linked in cyberspace. A computerized university could have many advantages,(6)such as easy scheduling ,efficient delivery of lectures to thousands or even millions of students at once, and ready access for students everywhere to the resources of all the world’s great libraries.Yet the Internet University poses dangers, too(6). For example, a line of franchised courseware, produced by a few superstar teachers(7D), marketed under the brand name of a famous institution, and heavily advertised, might eventually come to dominate the global education market, warns sociology professor Peter Manicas of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Besides enforcing a rigidly standardized curriculum(7C), such a “college education in a box”could undersell the offerings of many traditional brick and mortar institutions, effectively driving them out of business and throwing thousands of career academics out of work(7B), note Australian communications professors David Rooney and Greg Hearn. On the other hand, while global connectivity seems highly likely to play some significant role in future higher education, that does not mean greater uniformity in course content—or other dangers—will necessarily follow. Counter-movements are also at work. Many in academia, including scholars contributing to this volume, are questioning the fundamental mission of university education. What if, for instance, instead of receiving primarily technical training and building their individual careers,(8) university students and professors could focus their learning and research efforts on existing problems in their local communities and the world? Feminist scholar Ivana Milojevic dares to dream what a university might become “if we believed that child care workers and teachers in early childhood education should be one of the highest (rather than lowest) paid professionals?”Co-editor Jennifer Gidley shows how tomorrow’s university faculty, instead of giving lectures and conducting independent research, may take on three new roles. Some would act as brokers, assembling customized degree-credit programs for individual students by mixing and matching the best course offerings available from institutions all around the world. A second group, mentors, would function much like today’s faculty advisers, but are likely to be working with many more students outside their own academic specialty. This would require them to constantly be learning from their students as well as instructing them.(79)A third new role for faculty, and in Gidley’s view the most challenging and rewarding of all, would be as meaning-makers: charismatic sages and practitioners leading groups of students/colleagues in collaborative efforts to find spiritual as well as rational and technological solutions to specific real-world problems. Moreover, there seems little reason to suppose that any one form of university must necessarily drive out all other options. Students may be “enrolled”in courses offered at virtual campuses on the Internet, between —or even during—sessions at a real world problem focused institution. As co-editor Sohail Inayatullah points out in his introduction, no future is inevitable, and the very act of imagining and thinking through alternative possibilities can directly affect how thoughtfully, creatively and urgently even a dominant technology is adapted and applied. Even in academia, the future belongs to those who care enough to work their visions into practical, sustainable realities.6. When the book reviewer discusses the Internet University,A. he is in favor of it.B. his view is balanced.C. he is slightly critical of itD. he is strongly critical of it.7. Which of the following is NOT seen as a potential danger of the Internet University?A. Internet based courses may be less costly than traditional ones.B. Teachers in traditional institutions may lose their jobs.C. Internet based courseware may lack variety in course content.D. The Internet University may produce teachers with a lot of publicity.8. According to the review, what is the fundamental mission of traditional university education?A. Knowledge learning and career building.B. Learning how to solve existing social problems.C. Researching into solutions to current world problems.D. Combining research efforts of teachers and students in learning.9. Judging from the three new roles envisioned for tomorrow’s university faculty, university teachersA. are required to conduct more independent research.B. are required to offer more courses to their students.C. are supposed to assume more demanding duties.D. are supposed to supervise more students in their specialty10. Which category of writing does the review belong to?A. NarrationB. DescriptionC. PersuasionD. Exposition.。

An Interesting BookThe DA VINCI CODE is really a good book! It's very interesting. Although I don't have the knowledge of religion, I am crazy about it! However, myforeign teacher told me that some people who believe in Jesus don't like this book. They hold the opinion that the book tells them something wrong. Because I know nothing about religion, I am not sure if it is true. I think that everything has pros and cons, we should learn the good things from the book and don't care about the bad things. We can benefit from reading. We can learn lots of knowledge from books. Let's read. Books are the food of our spirit.

1A lot of people ask me which book is my most favorite one, and I always proudly answer them, which is all history about China. This will be a long story for me to read this book. First time I touched this book is when I was 5 years old. My mother bought it to me as my 5-years-old gift. This is a really wonderful present to me,which is opening a history gate to me , a totally innocent boy. I almost forgot the dinner after I read the first page. From then on, I was the historic in my class and showed my knowledge from that book to my classmeates. When I became older and older, I knew more about it and feel more confident about my own China. I am proud that I am a Chinese and I will make more effort to build a more powerful country and let Chinese history more brilliant. As me, this is the most important book in my life and now I still read it and recite some part of it. I think everyone should read it and get this wonderful experenice.

First, my mother, ConnieBrown— fellow scribe, nurturer, musician, and role model. And my wife, Blythe— art historian, painter, front-line editor, and without a doubt the most astonishinglytalented woman I have everknown.FACT:The Priory of Sion— a European secret society founded in 1099—is a real organization. In1975 Paris's Bibliothèque Nationale discovered parchments known as Les Dossiers Secrets, identifying numerous members of the Priory of Sion, including Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli,Victor Hugo, and Leonardo da Vinci. The Vatican prelature known as Opus Dei is a deeply devout Catholic sect that has been thetopic of recent controversy due to reports of brainwashing, coercion, and a dangerous practiceknown as "corporal mortification." Opus Dei has just completed construction of a $47 millionWorld Headquarters at 243 Lexington Avenue in New York City. All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel areaccurate.PrologueLouvre Museum, Paris 10:46 P.M.Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum'sGrand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing thegilded frame, the seventy-six-year-old man heaved the masterpiece toward himself until it torefrom the wall and Saunière collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas. As he had anticipated, a thundering iron gate fell nearby, barricading the entrance to thesuite. The parquet floor shook. Far off, an alarm began to ring. The curator lay a moment, gasping for breath, taking stock. I am still alive. He crawled outfrom under the canvas and scanned the cavernous space for someplace to hide.A voice spoke, chillingly close. "Do not move."On his hands and knees, the curator froze, turning his head slowly.Only fifteen feet away, outside the sealed gate, the mountainous silhouette of his attackerstared through the iron bars. He was broad and tall, with ghost-pale skin and thinning white hair. His irises were pink with dark red pupils. The albino drew a pistol from his coat and aimed thebarrel through the bars, directly at the curator. "You should not have run." His accent was noteasy to place. "Now tell me where it is.""I told you already," the curator stammered, kneeling defenseless on the floor of the gallery."I have no idea what you are talking about!""You are lying." The man stared at him, perfectly immobile except for the glint in hisghostly eyes. "You and your brethren possess something that is not yours."The curator felt a surge of adrenaline. How could he possibly know this?"Tonight the rightful guardians will be restored. Tell me where it is hidden, and you willlive." The man leveled his gun at the curator's head. "Is it a secret you will die for?"Saunière could not breathe. The man tilted his head, peering down the barrel of his gun.Saunière held up his hands in defense. "Wait," he said slowly. "I will tell you what youneed to know." The curator spoke his next words carefully. The lie he told was one he hadrehearsed many times... each time praying he would never have to use it.When the curator had finished speaking, his assailant smiled smugly. "Yes. This is exactlywhat the others told me."Saunière recoiled. The others?"I found them, too," the huge man taunted. "All three of them. They confirmed what youhave just said."It cannot be! The curator's true identity, along with the identitiesof his three sénéchaux, was almost as sacred as the ancient secret they protected. Saunière now realized his sénéchaux, following strict procedure, had told the same lie before their own deaths. It was part of theprotocol. The attacker aimed his gun again. "When you are gone, I will be the only one who knowsthe truth."The truth. In an instant, the curator grasped the true horror of the situation. If I die, the truthwill be lost forever. Instinctively, he tried to scramble for cover. The gun roared, and the curator felt a searing heat as the bullet lodged in his stomach. Hefell forward... struggling against the pain. Slowly, Saunière rolled over and stared back throughthe bars at his attacker. The man was now taking dead aim at Saunière's head.Saunière closed his eyes, his thoughts a swirling tempest of fear and regret. The click of an empty chamber echoed through the corridor. The curator's eyes flew open. The man glanced down at his weapon, looking almost amused. He reached for a secondclip, but then seemed to reconsider, smirking calmly at Saunière's gut. "My work here is done."The curator looked down and saw the bullet hole in his white linen shirt. It was framed by asmall circle of blood a few inches below his breastbone. My stomach. Almost cruelly, the bullethad missed his heart. As a veteran of la Guerre d'Algérie, the curator had witnessed this horriblydrawn-out death before. For fifteen minutes, he would survive as his stomach acids seeped intohis chest cavity, slowly poisoning him from within."Pain is good, monsieur," the man said. Then he was gone.Alone now, Jacques Saunière turned his gaze again to the iron gate. He was trapped, and thedoors could not be reopened for at least twenty minutes. By the time anyone got to him, hewould be dead. Even so, the fear that now gripped him was a fear far greater than that of his owndeath.I must pass on the secret.Staggering to his feet, he pictured his three murdered brethren. He thought of thegenerations who had come before them... of the mission with which they had all been entrusted. An unbroken chain of knowledge.Suddenly, now, despite all the precautions... despite all thefail-safes... Jacques Saunièrewas the only remaining link, the sole guardian of one of the most powerful secrets ever kept.Shivering, he pulled himself to his feet.I must find some way....He was trapped inside the Grand Gallery, and there existed only one person on earth towhom he could pass the torch. Saunière gazed up at the walls of his opulent prison. A collectionof the world's most famous paintings seemed to smile down on him like old friends.Wincing in pain, he summoned all of his faculties and strength. The desperate task beforehim, he knew, would require every remaining second of his life.CHAPTER 1Robert Langdon awoke slowly.A telephone was ringing in the darkness— a tinny, unfamiliar ring. He fumbled for thebedside lamp and turned it on. Squinting at his surroundings he saw a plush Renaissancebedroom with Louis XVI furniture, hand-frescoed walls, and a colossal mahogany four-posterbed.Where the hell am I?The jacquard bathrobe hanging on his bedpost bore the monogram: HOTEL RITZ PARIS.Slowly, the fog began to lift.Langdon picked up the receiver. "Hello?""Monsieur Langdon?" a man's voice said. "I hope I have not awoken you?"Dazed, Langdon looked at the bedside clock. It was 12:32 A.M. He had been asleep only anhour, but he felt like the dead."This is the concierge, monsieur. I apologize for this intrusion, but you have a visitor. Heinsists it is urgent."Langdon still felt fuzzy. A visitor? His eyes focused now on a crumpled flyer on his bedsidetable.THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF PARISproudly presentsAN EVENING WITH ROBERT LANGDONPROFESSOR OF RELIGIOUS SYMBOLOGY,HARVARD UNIVERSITYLangdon groaned. Tonight's lecture— a slide show about pagan symbolism hidden in thestones of Chartres Cathedral— had probably ruffled some conservative feathers in the audience. Most likely, some religious scholar had trailed him home to pick a fight."I'm sorry," Langdon said, "but I'm very tired and— ""Mais, monsieur," the concierge pressed, lowering his voice to an urgent whisper. "Yourguest is an important man."Langdon had little doubt. His books on religious paintings and cult symbology had madehim a reluctant celebrity in the art world, and last year Langdon's visibility had increased ahundredfold after his involvement in a widely publicized incident at the Vatican. Since then, thestream of self-important historians and art buffs arriving at his door had seemed never-ending."If you would be so kind," Langdon said, doing his best to remain polite, "could you takethe man's name and number, and tell him I'll try to call him before I leaveParis on Tuesday?Thank you." He hung up before the concierge could protest.Sitting up now, Langdon frowned at his bedside Guest Relations Handbook, whose coverboasted: SLEEP LIKE A BABY IN THE CITY OF LIGHTS. SLUMBER AT THE PARISRITZ. He turned and gazed tiredly into the full-length mirror across the room. The man staringback at him was a stranger— tousled and weary. You need a vacation, Robert. The past year had taken a heavy toll on him, but he didn't appreciate seeing proof in themirror. His usually sharp blue eyes looked hazy and drawn tonight. A dark stubble wasshrouding his strong jaw and dimpled chin. Around his temples, the gray highlights wereadvancing, making their way deeper into his thicket of coarse black hair. Although his femalecolleagues insisted the gray only accentuated his bookish appeal,Langdon knew better. If Boston Magazine could see me now.Last month, much to Langdon's embarrassment, Boston Magazine had listed him as one ofthat city's top ten most intriguing people— a dubious ho。

So dark the con of Man”(男人的欺骗如此黑暗)。
