第五节愚人节愚人节(April Fool’s Day / All Fools’ Day)是一个比较特殊的节日。
时间是每年的四月一日(April 1st)。
按照西方国家的习俗，在愚人节这一天，人们可以任意说谎骗人，愚弄他人。
骗术越高，越能得到推崇。
在愚人节受到愚弄的人被称为 April Fool(四月愚人)。
按照他们的习惯，当一个人成功地使别人受到愚弄时，他就会笑着说 April Fool, 这时受愚弄的人恍然大悟，也会跟着哈哈大笑。

作为老师我对学生一直是关心爱护的，并且态度也比较随和，所以学生同我关系也很融洽，按理他们应该对我礼貌有增，但是他们却竟然在四月一日这一天找机会来“整”我。
记得当时我在一所私立学校教高中毕业班英语，同时兼任该校教务主任。
这所私立学校分设本部和分部两处，本部由校长亲自负责，分部由我负责。
作为英语教师，本来对四月一日这一天是比较敏感的，但是由于我当时工作比较繁忙，竟然忘了这天是四月一日(愚人节)。
记得那天上午我正在办公室备课，一个平时关系与我甚好的学生跑进来对我说“校长要我来通知你马上去本部开会”，看着他那一本正经的样子，我一点也没有怀疑这是一个“圈套”，于是我骑着自行车就往本部冲，等我急冲冲地赶到本部时，已是上气不接下气，一问校长，他说没有派人叫我上去开会，是不是搞错了，我当时真是笨到了极点，到这时我还没有怀疑这位学生的“诚实”性，因为我当时压根儿就没想到那天是四月一日，待我又从本部返回到分部时，那位“不诚实”的学生一见到我就大声笑着对我说 April Fool, 这时我才如梦初醒，于是笑着给了这位学生一拳头。
这里要说明一点的是，以愚人节活动来活跃气氛，放松一下大脑，为人们的生活增添一些乐趣，这本不是件坏事。
但是开玩笑或愚弄人应该有个分寸，要适可而止，不要只是一味地追求骗术的高明，而不顾他人的承受性，也就是说不要把自己一时的高兴建立在别人的痛苦之上。

英语沙龙愚人节傻瓜April FoolKevin sat up so quickly that he almost bumped his head on the shelf above his bed．Someone was pounding on his bedroomdoor．“Kevin．It's time to get up，”he heard his sister calling．“Hurry up．You've slept in again．”Kevin stumbled1) to the door and yanked2) it open．April was standing in the hall．“Hurry up．”she said．“You' re going to be late．”Kevin dashed past her and ran downstairs．The kitchen was empty．The house was dark and silent．As he switched on the light，he glanced at the clock．It was ６：００a．m．．The calendar beside the refrigerator caught his eye．There was a big red circle around the first day of the month．Kevin let out a loud groan．Behind him，April giggled．“April Fool．”she teased3) as Kevin spun around4)．“I got you，just like I promised．”With that，she flipped into a hand－stand and looked at Kevin with an upside－down grin．Kevin turned and stomped upstairs．As he got back into bed，thoughts of his sister cartwheeled through his mind．April Bateman，expert gymnast5) and expert joke－player，was driving everyone crazy．She never walked when she could bounce，flip，or somersault6)．She never missed an opportunity toplay a joke on someone．And of course，April Fool's Day was April's favorite day of the year．Later that morning，Mr．Bateman discovered that his shoes wouldn'ttie and his shaver wouldn't shave．Someone had removed the laces from his shoes and the batteries from his shaver．Mrs．Bateman found a huge spider in the middle of the kitchen table．Before she realized that it was plastic，she dropped two soft－boiled eggs on the floor and knocked over a pitcher7) of orange juice．Kevin discovered that every one of his T－shirts had been turned inside out．“Where's April？”he asked when the family sat down to breakfast．“She had an early gym practice，”said his father．“There's a gy mnastics competition at the Y this afternoon，”his mother said as she buttered a slice oftoast．“April has her heart set on winning a medal．”When Kevin came home at noon，his mother rushed into the kitchen．“Kevin，April' s gym coach phoned．The competition may have to be switched to a different location．If that happens，Mr．Boyer will phone back by１２：３０．”She paused to catch herbreath．“It's １２：００now and I have to be at the office infifteen minutes．If Mr．Boyer calls，leave me a note．”She pointed to the note pad by the phone．“This is very important，Kevin．Besure that you write down the message．”“Trust me，Mom，”said Kevin．“I promise I'll take care of it．”Shortly after his mother left，the phone rang．It was Mr．Boyer．“The competition has been switched from the Y to the Oakville Arena，”he explained．Kevin wrote down the new address and directions．“Be sure to leave the note where your mother will see it，Kevin，”headded．“ I'll take care of it，Mr．Boyer．I promise，”Kevin assured him．Late that afternoon，Kevin came home from soccer practice．When he went in to the den，April was sitting in the rocking chair，staring out of the window．“How did the competition go？”he asked．“Did you win a medal？”April looked up．Her face was red and tear－streaked．“No，I didn't．I didn't even have a chance to compete，”she said in a shaky voice．“What happened？”Kevin asked．“We were late and I was disqualified，thanks to your stupid joke．”April sniffed and tears ran down her cheeks．Kevin stared at her．“What joke？What are you talking about？”Suddenly their mo ther appeared in the doorway．She looked right at Kevin．“What happened to Mr．Boyer' s message？”she asked holding up a blank note pad．Kevin' s eyes widened in surprise．“I wrote everything down like you told me to，”he said．His mother tapped the blank note pad．“Kevin，there's nothing written here．”She went on quickly．“When I camehome and found this，I figured that the competition was at the Y as scheduled．So that's where we went．”“But we were the only ones there，”April interrupted．She glared at Kevin．“By the ti me we found out the competition had been switched，it was toolate．”“Kevin，what happened to Mr．Boyer's message？”his mother asked．Kevin pointed to the note pad she was holding．“When Mr．Boyer phoned，I grabbed that pad and the orange pen that was beside it．I wrote down the message just like I promised I would．”There was a loud gasp7) from the rocking chair．Kevin and his mother turned to April．April's mouth was a round “O” of surprise．“You used my trick pen，”she spluttered．“What？Trick？Pen？”her mother asked．Each word was a separate question．“I．．．It's．．．It looks okay when you write with it．”April stumbled over the words．“But when the ink dries，the writing disappears．I was going to take it to school to play a joke on my teacher．”She shut her eyes．“Me and my dumb jokes．”she wailed．Kevin looked at his sister．He wanted to say，“Joke's on you，April Fool，”but the words wouldn't come out．Instead he said，“There's another competition next week，isn't there？”April nodded and managed a weak smile．愚人节傻瓜凯文一骨碌爬起身，脑袋几乎撞到了床上方的架子上。

April Fool’s Day
While popular in the U．S．，the April Fool' s Day tradition is even more prevalent1) in European countries，such as France and Great Britain．Althought he roots of the traditional trickings are unclear，the French and the British both have claims on the origin of the celebration．
One theory holds that the first April Fool's Day was on April １of the year when King of France instituted the new calendar．This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April １．Many people were reluctant2) to adjust to the new calendar and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on what had become the first day of April．Thus，they become the first April fools．Others began to give gag3) gifts on the day to mock the foolishness of those who continued to celebrate the new year on April １．
An English story about the day，however，holds that it began sometime during the １２００s．At the time，King John of England was in the habit of making a road out of nearly every path he walked regularly．The citizens of one particular farm village were aware of this．To avoid having their green meadows and pastures disturbed with one of the king' s roads，they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside．The king sent a group of messengers4) to inform the villagers that they must remove the barrier．Upon hearing that the king was planning to do this，however，the villagers developed a plan of their own．When the messengers arrived，they found what app eared to be a community of lunatics5)，with people behaving in a bizarre6) manner，throwing things and running around wildly．The messengers，alarmed at what they had found，reported to King John that these people were so mad as to be beyond punishment．So，the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the King．In Great Britain，tradition only allow s April Fool's tricks from midnight to noon on April １．Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves．

为了保护他们绿色的草地和牧场免受国王修路所将造成的破坏，他们修了一道篱笆来阻挡国王在他们的乡间穿行。
国王派了一队使者去通报村民们必须拆除障碍。
在听到国王打算这么做时，村民们也想出了自己的办法。
当使者到达时，他们看到这儿的人像一群疯子似的，样子怪诞，乱扔东西，四下疯跑。
使者们惊讶于他们所看到的情景，向约翰国王报告说，这些人疯得厉害根本没法处罚。
村民们就这样骗过了国王，保护了自己的农田。
在英国，按习俗在４月１日只允许从半夜到中午的这段时间可以搞愚人的恶作剧，到下午还这么做的人自己就成了愚人了。
