Discuss the generation gap

A: hi.

B: hi, why are you so sleepy now.

A: I slept very late last night.

B: what did you do? Why you slept so late.

A: I was chatting with my grandma on QQ.

B: really? So faddish is your grandma.

A: not really. This summer I left my hometown to attend college, she said she would miss me very much, then I told her that we can talk with each other on line.

B: then you taught her how to use QQ?

A: before that I taught her pinyin and surfing the internet.

B: you really a patient girl, aren’t you?

A: the first time I chatted with grandma, I thought more than that, I was proud of myself, but now I really regretted what I had done.

B: why? Isn’t it interesting to chat with your family?

A: you know, we have different background, when I referred to many things, I had to explain to her in detail, what I did in the most of time I spend on talking with her is explaining, it’s boring.

B: the feeling is mutual, I ever told my mother the word “diaosi”, then she kept asking me what is that, I tried my best to make it clear, after a very long time, I suddenly realized that all I did is in vain.

A: maybe this is what is called generation gap. There is always some troubles for both of us to communicate with each other.

B: and what’s more, they always want to make clear what we are doing. Sometimes we are glad to tell them, just to find that they don’t understand at all. What’s worse, we don’t like to be controlled by others, we cry for freedom. Maybe that is why we often quarrel with our family.

A: and they define us as treason.

B: yes, that is what I can’t accept, we live in different condition, we just have some characteristics to suit to this condition. They always define all we have that is different from them as bad thing, and try to write them off.

A: don’t be so pessimistic, they just want to show their concern for us, they both want to make us better. Pay more consideration for each other, the situation will improve.

B: I hope so.

Discuss the valued sportsmanship

A: what did you do this afternoon?

B: I was playing basketball. I am almost dog-tired.

A: I like doing sports too. why do you like sports?

B: because sports can keep us healthy and help shape a nice body.

A: so much time of sports, I believe that it have some bad effects on your health. B: that’s kind of reasonable.

A: I always wanted to know what the meaning of sports was. I figured that it had to be something beyond being in good shape and having a nice body, otherwise people would just do gymnastics. What is the meaning of sport that we can’t find anywhere else?

B: because sports teach us teamwork, organization, and better communication skills, helping us realize pressure. We can also make new friends by doing sports, and when I did something difficult I will feel very proud, like I really did some big things.

A: that’s the key, is it possible that sport is a metaphor for the meaning of life? Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose, just as in real life. But no matter what the outcome is, no matter how many times you fall down and lose the ball, you may lie on the grass or floor for a while, then stand up and brush yourself off, and starts trying again, until the goal is scored or until the prey is caught. This falling and getting up defines the very human nature—HOPE. Even when we are not wining, and the odds are against us, we just keep moving forward until we exceed the impossible.

B: yes, this is why I like watching NBA. Because of these abilities of going beyond the impossible, athletes are like a temple for us fans. Fans worship them like gods, wearing their jerseys to identify with them, collecting pictures of their role models and singing songs and cheers to give them power. And then, when the goal is scored, all the fans become like one big family, hugging each other even though they are strangers meeting for the first time. That’s very enjoying. Finally , whenever I am cheering on the stands, whenever I am yelling at the referee, whenever I am jumping in excitement for the goal scored or missed, I get transported to that stage of my life when we were playing basketball in the parking lot in my neighborhood. All of a sudden the meaning becomes clear as I run on the field fighting against a goalpost. And when I conquer it, I feel the cheers of fans running through my veins, and I am delighted, delighted with my laugh.

A: I think we both have gotten to it, sports is really wonderful. It’s so nice to talk with you.
