Other educational institutes include-Indian Institute of Management(IIMs),Banaras Hindu University,University of Pune,Jadavpur University and other universities.There has been a noteworthy increase in the number of higher education institutes sponsored by the private sector.A bulk of the current growth has occurred in the engineering and management sections. However,a number of the new entrants have not been able to contest up to the quality standard of publicly funded premier institutes.Most Indian universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in computer science namely,Bachelor of Computer Applications (B.C.A.),Master of Computer Applications(M.C.A.), B.Sc.(Computer Science),M.Sc. (Computer Science),M.Sc.(Information Technology), B.E.(Computer Science), B.E. (Information Technology), B.B.A.(Systems Management),M.B.A.(Systems Management), M.Tech(Computer Science).These programs typically allow a student to study software design and implementation topics,and they provide a common educational base for entry-level programming positions.Specific software development skills are taught outside the university system,in vocational schools,in-house courses,or short courses.Several institutes like NIIT,Aptech,Tulec,Tata Infotech,ICS,CMC,etc.provide short-term courses.They differ in duration,in cost,and in the extent to which skills are transferable to other tasks.In addition,a number of software vendors certify proficiency in the use of specific products.The certifications are diverse and specific. Some examples are-Certified Novell Engineer or Administrator,IBM’s Application Development Certifications in XML and VisualAge,Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Database Administrator,Oracle Certified Professional tracks,Sun Certified Programmer or Developer for Java,Sun Certified System or Network Administrator,the multi-vendor Certified Internet Professional.These certifications are often specific to a particular version of the application,making them even more constricted.These credentials are less broad than professional licensing but broader than product.Currently,software developers are educated in the conventional ways.Unfortunately,this has not produced the supply and quality of developers needed to satisfy the growing demand and rapid changes in software development.In addition,traditional education makes scant provision for helping students keep their knowledge current and meeting the software industry needs. Software engineering does not yet have an independent curriculum with enough durable, codified content to justify a separate undergraduate curriculum.Software engineering often forms a substantial content of the various computer science course syllabi taught in the technical institutes.Teaching software engineering is extremely difficult.The root of the problem lies in the impact of scale.Most of the principles central to software engineering are crucial for producing large,robust,long-lived programs,but hardly relevant(and oftentimes counterproductive)for the smaller,non-critical,short-lived programs that can be developed in the scope of an academic course.This means the methods and theories taught in software engineering courses are often regarded by students as abstract,academic concepts which are quickly forgotten after the final exam.Limited exposure to industry problems,inability to adapt course curricula to dynamic industry requirements,limited exposure to latest tools&techniques,inability to enter into emerging areas,rigid and outdated course curricula,inability to adapt course curricula to dynamic industry requirements,poor industry linkages,little real-life case studies,little scope for creative learning are some of the drawbacks in the software education system in the universities.Without experiencing their practical impact on realistic programs,students rarely develop a deep understanding or appreciation of important ideas in software engineering. College education is not sufficient for practicing software engineering.It needs to be supplemented to match the requirements of the industry.Most software companies start with engineers and graduates and convert them to software engineers. All major companies have large in-house training organizations.New recruits typically undergo3to6months training before induction.4.Assessment of transfer of software engineering knowledge50alumni of different colleges and universities currently placed in software organizations were surveyed to analyze the gap between knowledge attained in the educational institution during their course of study and the usefulness of the knowledge in the software industry.These educational institutions covered in this survey were scattered throughout the country and were amongst the first100best-rated institutions.Of the50educational institutions covered in the survey,6institutions had collaborations with each other.The software engineering curriculum was scanned and then instead of assessing the knowledge of software engineering as a generaltopic ,it was broken into subtopics such as software cost estimation,software metrics,configuration management,maintenance,testing,functional design,object oriented design,user interface design,life cycle models etc.Table 1shows the results for 40alumni for the part of the survey based on the mean scores for emphasis,usefulness and sufficiency of knowledge for the software engineering topics.The alumni gave a score for emphasis,usefulness and sufficiency of knowledge for the software engineering topics in a range of 0-5.10respondents with a basic background other than Computer Science and Information Technology reported to have not studied Software Engineering in the educational institutes during their course of study.Ideally,emphasis,usefulness and sufficiency of knowledge should be equal for all the software engineering topics.Table 1shows that for object-oriented design,software architecture,project management,testing,process standards,tools,quality assurance,and software metrics,the emphasis rating is lesser than usefulness rating indicating the need for technical institutes to revise the course content in these areas.The relationship between content emphasis and the sufficiency of knowledge determines the efficiency of the education.It was found that for requirements,analysis,functional design,object-oriented design,life cycle models,tools,documentation,software reliability and process standards,the sufficiency of knowledge was much lesser than its usefulness rating indicating that these areas needed to be assessed.Table 1indicates that for software reliability,software metrics,tools,process standards,quality assurance and object-oriented design the sufficiency of knowledge interest in the topic.A feedback should be taken at regular intervals from the students about how well they understand the topics in class.This continuous feedback helps the mentor rethink and adapt the overall organization of the course,its contents,the time allocated to each subtopic,the materials used,the teaching techniques used,etc.•Institute-industry interaction should be encouraged[2].Visiting faculty from the industry should give lectures on emerging technologies in software engineering currently used in the software industries to keep the students abreast of the latest development.Also refresher course programs in recent software engineering technologies at the institute should be conducted by software personnel from the industry.For instance,hardly any
