AEarlier this year, the best company at surveying the rich in China announced that more than 60 % of the people it surveyed had already immigrated to another country, or were considering doing so.The question for the Hurun Report, which publishes an annual China rich list, was why? Was pollution driving people abroad, weariness over China's political crackdowns, or something else entirely? It turns out the questions also nagged Rupert Hoogewerf, founder of Hurun. At the time, his best guess was that pollution and the desire to park some assets abroad were driving rich Chinese to the United States, Canada, and Australia--the top three destinations for those leaving China. But to find out for sure, he conducted a follow-up survey that is being released today, and Fortune got exclusive early access. Hurun teamed up with Visas Consulting Group to ask 141 wealthy Chinese questions about emigration and where they're moving their money. The researchers discovered that three factors drove emigration from China, with each factor accounting for 20% of the responses.People moved because they wanted better options for their children's education; they were distressed(痛苦的) about the growing pollution problems plaguing(烦扰) China's cities; and they were concerned about food safety in the country, which in the latest scare involved tainted dog treats."Again and again, when talking to people on an individual basis, those are the issues they raise," says Hoogewerf.Maybe most surprising, two-thirds of those emigrating, or considering doing so, are also considering giving up their Chinese nationality. As I wrote in March, just as Beijing was coming out of the throes of a smoggy winter, those who can avoid China's pollution and food scares are doing so. It's troublesome for the Chinese government because experts conclude that big improvements to the air remain at least a decade away, not to say anything about China's food safety or its education system. The Hurun survey produced other interesting results. As a percentage of their total wealth, rich Chinese invest on average 16% abroad. The most popular investment choice is real estate and the U.S. is the overwhelming favorite destination. Los Angeles ranks as the most popular city to buy real estate, followed by San Francisco and New York. Vancouver ranked as the third most popular city. Detached villas were the preferred type of housing, followed by apartments and townhouses. Those surveyed all had assets worth more than $1 million and on average were worth $ 7 million. The top destinations for rich emigrating from China are as follows:The wealthiest citizens in any country are the most mobile, so the flight of wealthy Chinese isn't in itself a surprise. But unlike rich Americans fleeing their home country to avoid taxes, the Chinese are leaving because of basic desires—clean air, clean food, good schools. If China's government doesn't improve these, the flight of China's wealthiest residents won't stop.1. How many people investigated want to emigrate for their children's education?A.24.B.25.C.94.D.28.2. My good mood ended, however, when the radio station took a news break between songs. Then suddenly I found myself listening to yet another story of a rich famous man who had bro-ken the law. I shook my head as I came to a red traffic light. As I pulled to a stop I noticed four leather' jacketed bikers, They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked rough and dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed each one was holding their helmet in their hands. I rolled down my window as one approached my car. "We are the Brothers of the Wheel," he said. "We are collecting money for a Christmas Toy Drive for needy children. " As I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and tattoos and into his eyes. They shined with a goodness and kindness that came right from his soul. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other bikers as I drove off. My good mood had returned. My faith in mankind had been bolstered. And I had to remember again never to judge people by their appearance. Our society often judges books by their covers but God reads what is written in our hearts and souls. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. 16 When someone says he has a good memory, he means he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says his memory is poor, he means he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong.17 One of them exerciseshis arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.If a friend complains his arms are weak, we know it is his own fault. But if he tells us he has a poor memory, many of us think his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky. Few of us realize it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. 18 But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means--practice.Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? 19 Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things. They cannot write them down in a little notebook and they have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.20A. What do you think of it?B. Yet many people do not seem to know the memory works in the same way.C. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.D. So if you want a good memory, practice remembering.E. Someone else says that he is poor in health.F. Why is this?G. The position is exactly the same as that of two people.第二部分:完形填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分)Hope in my armsLast year I was invited to participate in a carnival for Tuesday's Child, an organization that helps children with AIDS.All the children that had 21 at one particular room could paint a square on a piece of cloth. The park itself covers an area of around 2,850 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest park of its kind in the country. I recently visited it to see what it was like. One of the first sightings upon entering the park I found was a huge group of elephants. Our guide told us Tarangire was probably the best place in Tanzania to find large groups of elephants. We continued to watch the elephants as they stood under trees and scratched(搔)themselves against the trees to hit the spot of an itch(痒).To the right of the elephant group, we noticed a big tree. Our guide informed us that this was a baobabtree and that Tarangire was one of the best national parks in Africa to see so many baobab trees. As we continued our drive through the park, we finally reached a watering hole. Our guide warned us there were lions all around us. Most of them were resting in the shade under bushes, but there was one that was drinking from the watering hole directly in front of us. We then noticed there were a couple of fresh zebra corpses(尸体)—it seemed as if the resting lions had killed them! Our final big sighting was one that none of us were expecting to see!We pulled over to where there was a large gathering of cars, with a sleeping leopard there! We took photos happily and excitedly and observed its surprising body before returning to our hotel as it was getting late.So I hope you enjoyed my description of Tarangire, and that I've inspired you to add this amazing park to your very own Tanzania travel plan.7.How did the author travel in Tanzania Tarangire?A.By bicycle. 河南省新野县第三高级中学2014-2015学年高一上学期第二次月考英语试题第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)第一节(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)AOur need to communicate with each other has been a driving force in the development of technology. In the 20th century we have seen the invention of the radio, television, telephone and fax,and today the Internet has opened up a whole new way of communicating. We now have instant messaging services such as ICQ or China's QQ and chat rooms where people can join group discussions. They mean increasing choices for when, where and how to communicate, and more importantly, with whom. While most people use the Internet to keep in touch with friends and family, a growing number of people use QQ and chat rooms to meet and chat with strangers.Because the Internet allows a certain amount of anonymity, users can be more open making it easier to make new friends. One user said that everyone is equal online, and age and appearance become unimportant. This makes it easier for peopleto communicate with each other.Finding new friends is not the only reason people use chat rooms. The Internet can bring together like-minded people who want to discuss their favourite topics. There are chat rooms for certain sports, types of music, styles of art,in fact, just about any interest you can imagine, and many that you can't! Whatever unusual interest you might have, if you search on the Internet, there is a good chance that you will find someone.somewhere in cyberspace, willing to talk to you about it-right now. However, there are problems with going online. It is possible for cyber-criminals to steal information such as credit card details while you are online, and there is always the chance that a new friend is not who he or she claims to be.One girl was really disappointed when she discovered that her new cyberfriend who wrote poems for her, was actually copying all the poems from magazines. But for all the problems that might come up,instant messaging services and chat rooms are here to stay, putting in touch with friends, family and strangers of similar interests 1.People use the Internet to .A.chat to friends and meet family B.meet strangers and write poemsC.chat to friends, family and strangers2.What does anonymity (para.2)mean?A.The state of being unknown.B.The state of being friendly.C.The state of being on Line.3.What types of topics will people discuss on the Internet?A.Sports, types of music, styles of art.B.All kinds of topics.C.Only topics that the Internet allows.4.What is an example of problems with going online?A.Some people may send you poems copied from magazines.B.Your credit card details could be stolen.C.There might be no one to chat with.B“China now has 350 million smokers, accounting for one-third of the world total.Chinese smokers now become addicted to nicotine at the age of 19,five years earlier than the average starting age of 24 in 1 997,”a report said a couple of years ago.Of the 1.1 billion smokers all over the world.more than 800 million are in developing countries. And as the world's largest developing country, China also has the largest number of smokers. Some frightening facts start to appear when we examine who China’s smokers are.Of the 350 million addicts, more than 100 million are under the age of 18,while more than 50 percent of male teachers and doctors are smokers.Such a high rate of addicts among male teachers and doctors will certainly have a bad impact on the young generation.Teachers are usually expected to be role models for students who tend to consider whatever they do is fight and follow their example. It is very likely that the number of teenage smokers will increase in the near future unless measures are taken to forbid teachers from smoking in front of their students or designate schools as no-smoking zones. What is truly puzzling is why so many doctors smoke. They are aware of the results of the habit, such as high blood pressure and lung cancer.Their example only helps justify the addiction of so many others. If educated people set an example by stopping smoking at least in public places.it would be much easier to drive home the notion that it is uncivilized to smoke in public places.。

AOne day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had "referred him to me." This boy has lost his family," he wrote." He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I'm very worried about him. Can you help?"I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn't have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didn't say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children's drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon--in complete silence and without looking at me. It's not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with," I thought." Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering." Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly."It's your turn," he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one--without any words--can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.l. When he first met the author, David_____________.A. felt a little excitedB. walked energeticallyC. looked a little nervousD. showed up with his teacher2.As a psychologist, the author _______________.A. was ready to listen to DavidB. was skeptical about psychologyC. was able to describe David's problemD. was sure of handling David's problem3.David enjoyed being with the author because he______________.A. wanted to ask the author for adviceB. needed to share sorrow with the authorC. liked the children's drawings in the officeBIt is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that "When two English meet, their first talk is of weather." Though Johnson' s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that "To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it." Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. "The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty." According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather , they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank "fillers". In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.6.The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that__________A. most commentators agree with Dr. JohnsonB. Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observationC. the comment was accurate two hundred years agoD. English conversations usually start with the weather7.What does the underlined word "obsession" most probably refer to?A. A social trend.B. An emotional state.C. A historical concept.D. An unknown phenomenon.8.According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes thatA. Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weatherB. there is nothing special about the English weatherC. the English weather attracts people to the British IslesD. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty9.What is the author' s main purpose of writing the passage?A. To explain what English weather- speak is about.B. To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.C. To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.D. To convince people that the English weather is changeable.CIt's such a happy-looking library, painted yellow, decorated with palm-tree stickers and sheltered from the Florida sun by its own roof. About the size of a microwave oven, it's pedestrian friendly, too, waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach Country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens. It's a library built with love.A year ago, shortly after Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Williams report about the Little Free Library organization, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making books freely available, she announced to her family of four, "That's what we're going to do for our spring break!"Son Austin, now a 10th-grader, didn’t see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbox. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51-year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he' d built years earlier for daughter Abbie'stoy horses, and made a door of glass. After adding the library's final touches (装点), the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to "take a book, return a book," and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County. They stocked it with 20 or so books they' d already read, a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids' favorites. "I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again," said Janey, a stay-at-home mom.Since then, the collection keeps replenishing (补充) itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. (共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)AParents, our first teachers, play a highly significant role in our lives. However, doesn’t it seem that many of us become to have conflicts with them when we start high school? We're less likely to listen to them and take their suggestions——we even rebel against them. Why? It may be the so-called “generation gap”. A generation gap appears when we begin to feel our parents are ignoring us, don’t understand us, and we feel we can no longer share our feelings with them. The key reason is our desire for independence. In senior high school, we start to want to take responsibility for our own lives and make our own decisions. But parents resist this. They still want to control us and try to force us to do things they think we should do. Debate and discussion often come to nothing. Gradually, we talk with them less, and keep our feelings locked up inside.Zhang Xiaoyun, 16, of Ningbo, Zhejiang, has talked less and less with her mother since she started senior high school. “She believes studies should be my priority, not my inner world,” Zhang said. “Each day, she asks me the same old questions like, ‘How was your last exam?’ or ‘Have you made any progress in physics?’” To Zhang, these questions are annoying and so she always tries to ignore them and answers perfunctorily. “Sometimes, when I get upset, I quarrel with her. After, she comes to apologize and comfort me. But I know, she doesn’t completely understand me,” Zhang said. Now, a home that was once full of laughter has fallen into gloom and silence. The generation gap can be harmful. Because of the lack of communication, our parentsno longer know what we are thinking about. There are quarrels, even over trivial things. When that happens, we may not be able to concentrate on our studies. Some of us even become afraid to go home after school——a very serious situation for the whole family.1. Which of the following is not included in the passage?A. The causes of generation gap.B. Things have changed.China has banned free plastic bags at shops and supermarkets, and people have to pay for using bags. The rule started on June. It came because our country tried to make litter less. Making super-thin plastic bags has also been banned. The Chinese once used about 3,000,000,000 plastic shopping bags a day, and they have1caused pollution of the environment. The bags have become a main cause of plastic pollution because they are easy to break and people throw them away here and there. So the Chinese people are encouraged to bring their own bags for shopping. What kind of shopping bag is the best to bring? Some students in Anhui have a good idea. They make their own shopping bags. They use old clothes to make cloth bags, and send them to their parents as presents. They also ask their parents and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They think it is their duty to protect the environment.5. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors. The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange in a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for officers or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange and yellow are warm and that green, blue and violet are cool. ABefore I had my son, I spent two years working with children with disabilities. I learned that shouting and threats of punishment would result in a disaster. Coming up against their behaviour could only make the job harder and their behaviour more extreme. I found something that worked, though. There was a very naughty boy in the nursery and a teacher who was generally very confident with the children was asked to take charge of him. One day the boy joined a session in the room next to mine. His appearance created an atmosphere of tension. He spent the entire session running around ,hitting and kicking, and destroying property.I was in the craft room working with some other children when my co-worker told me that this boy's teacher was in tears, and could not get control of the situation. As we were talking, the boy ran in. I told my co-worker that I would take care of him.I closed the door. He was full of energy, throwing things around and making a huge mess. But I could see that he was doing all these to annoy me. He needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then he slowed down and began making a rocket. I talked to him about it. We continued like this for a few minutes before I slipped into the conversation:"So what happened today?"It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed. He told me that the teacher didn't let him do what he knew well due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making her run around and saw it as a game. I explained that his teacher hadnot seen it as a game and was very upset. This again was stated simply as a fact. I suggested that next time he had a session, he talk about what he hoped to do at the start, which might be easier for everyone. He agreed and was quiet for a moment. Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes before quietly asking if he could go to find his teacher to apologize.1. The boy made trouble for his teacher because he_______________A. was accused of destroying propertyB. was told not to yell at other childrenC. was made to do things against his willD. was blamed for creating an air of tension2. Why didn't the author do anything about the boy's bad behavior at first?A. She didn't want to make it worse.B. She didn't mind the huge mess at all.C. She was tired of shouting and threats.D. She hadn't thought of a coping strategy.3. The author managed to get the boy to talk to her by____________________A. playing games with himB. giving him a good suggestionC. describing his teacher's feelingsD. avoiding making critical remarks4. Why did the boy have tears in his eyes in the end?A. He was sorry about his reputation.B. He was regretful about his behavior.C. He was fearful of the author's warning.D. He was sad for the author's misunderstanding.BLondon's newest skyscraper (摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres , it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like aspire(尖顶). He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the buildingaren't regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts(桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began, a lot of people didn't want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics don't like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.5. London's newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of_______.A. its costB. its sizeC. its shapeD. its height6. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to __________.A. change London's skylineB. inherit London's traditionC. imitate the Egyptian styleD. attract potential visitors7. The critics who refer to social division think Shard ________.A. is only preferred by the richB. is intended for wealthy peopleC. is far away from the poor areaD. is popular only with Londoners8. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. The Shard: Cheers and ClapsB. The Shard: Work of a Great ArchitectC. The Shard: New Symbol of London?D. The Shard. A Change for the Better?CDo you want to get home from work knowing you have made a real difference in someone's life?If yes, don't care about sex or age! You'll succeed in getting this job.11. Which of the following can first be chosen as a volunteer?A. The one who can drive a car.B. The one who has done similar work before.C. The one who has patience to listen to others.D. The one who can use English to communicateDWorking with a group of baboons(狒狒) in the Namibian desert, Dr. Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology, Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food ,hidden in a box. Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task, while others had to learn for themselves. To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were, Dr. Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake. She found that personality had a major impact on learning. The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did. In effect, despite being made aware of what to do, they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.The same held true for anxious baboons compared with calm ones. The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not, even though they spent more time watching. This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals, something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things. The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (知的) tasks not because they aren't clever enough to solve them, but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they don't associate with the knowledgeable individuals, or they are too shy to use the information once they have it, information may not travel between all group members, preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning.第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)There is an English saying:" 16 " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 17Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. 18 If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs .The group that tolerated(忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 1920 They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.A. Laughter can prolong one's life.B. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh.C. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.D. It increases blood pressure, the heart heating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet.E. Although laughter" helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put this theory into clinic practice.F. Laughter is the best medicine.G. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.第二部分:英语知识运用第一节完形填空(20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

An official reportC. An exhibition guide.D. An art show review.BA typical lion tamer(驯兽师)in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip( 鞭) at a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’ the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)—only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving. It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become…take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.4. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?A. To get ready for a fight.B. To entertain the audience.C. To trick the lionD. To show off his skills..5. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?A. They have to do something for showB. They find it hard to make changes.C. They hold on to the wrong things.D. They feel puzzled over choices.6. When the world is “ waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to _____A. make a quick decisionB. wait for a better chanceC. break your old habitsD. ask for clear guidance7. What is the author’s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph3?A. Respectful.B. Supportive.C. Tolerant.D. Doubtful.CAs more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations —UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Centre Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethno linguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India , Nepal, Bhutan, and China . But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of importantmaterials-including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded –the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project —Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stories around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.8. What is Turin’s book based on?A. His personal experience in Nepal.B. The cultural studiesC. The documents available at Yale.D. His language research in Bhutan.9. What does “that tradition’ in Paragraph 3 refer to ?A. Telling stories about language usersB. Having full records of the languagesC. Living with the native speaker.D. Writing books on language teaching.10. Which of the following best describe Turin’s work?A. Design, experiment and report.B. Collect, protect and reconnectC. Record, repair and reward..D. D.By hurrying around.CUsing too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans canput our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. Youmay wonder how paving (铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water. A major part of thewater we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. Itcomes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow intothe ground to become groundwater.Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages (短缺).Drier climates are ofcourse more likely to have droughts (干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, goodmanagement can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In theUnited States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we dependon water to live, but there's a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for yourdrinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher (洗碗机) only when it isfull. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even helpto keep our water supplyclean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away. 8.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?A. Using river water.B. Paving parking lots.C. Throwing batteries away.D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.9.What can be inferred from the text?A.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.B.All water shortages are due to human behavior.C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.10.The last paragraph is intended to ________.A. show us how to fix leaks at homeB. tell us how to run a dishwasherC. suggest what we do to save water at homeD. prove what drinking glass is best for us11.The text is mainly about ________.A. why paving roads reduces our waterB. how human activity affects our water supplyC. why droughts occur more in dry climatesD. how much we depend on water to liveDWhen something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.”or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault;the car broke down.”It is probably not your fault, butonce you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are aloser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, youcan have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and startfocusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your carbroke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start tocarry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. Foranother example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility orability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame theperson. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept thatthe person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how yourcolleague fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that youare successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; theyhave just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing thoseproblems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on“whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems arejust stepping stone for success.12. According to the passage, winners .A. blame themselves rather that othersB. meet with fewer difficulties in their livesC. have responsible and able colleaguesD. deal with problems rather than blame others13. The underlined word remedy in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .A. improveB. acceptC. avoidD. consider14. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should .A. blame him for his lack of responsibilityB. find a better way to handle the problemC. tell him to find the cause of the problemD. ask a more able colleague for help15. When problems occur, winners take them asA. excuses for their failuresB. barriers to greater powerC. chances for self-developmentD. challenges to their colleagues第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

At one time, this was pretty much true. During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier. This construction work went on for five centuries! If all the roads built during the Roman Empire were put together end to end, they would circle the equator twice. The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (监督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. The first layer was made of sand. Next, the builders added rocks and rubble. On top of these materials came gravel. On this solid foundation, the road builders placed paving stones. Also, Roman roads were cambered. This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag pattern to make the road rise gradually. All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousands paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, Who was emperor at the time, the road's destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers.Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts ofRoman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive accomplishments of the Roman Empire.5. In my enthusiasm and excitement, I talked quite louder than usual voice and in Spanish, my mother tongue.A few minutes into the call, an old lady sitting at the table beside mine got up, seemingly offended, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate (重新安排) a table as far away as possible from this man who seemed to be impolite.I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and felt the urge to apologize. Before getting up, I looked around to see where she was and she was at the table farthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out the window. I found a tinge (气息) of sadness or anxiety and perhaps a desire for aloneness and peace. But I had obviously destroyed it minutes earlier. Right then I abandoned my plan for a conventional apologetic gesture. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I look one out and wrote some words to express my apology. On signing my restaurant bill, I asked a waiter to secretly charge the lady's meal to me and hand her the smile card instead of her bill.Did she take it the wrong way, I wondered? Did she get confused? Did she refuse the anonymous offer? And so on. I just waited and felt nervous to learn the outcome. To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way.The waiter approached me in a joy, telling me, "In the many times she had dined here before, I had never seen the old lady smile as she did when receiving the smile card and the $0 bill. She thanked me even though I explained that someone else did the job. "9. For one thing, though their sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (诊断), doctors can more easily recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly diagnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modem living, including heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions than before. We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the examination of the blood.Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct more than 90 percent of the time. The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully. The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂质). Cancers seem to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer. The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.13. The underlined words "such a test" refer to________.A. the test that shows which persons have cancer and which don’t .B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its development,.C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is -smallD. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way14. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Cancers have much to do with something in patients’ b lood.B. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by cancer.C.X-raying is the best way to determined whether a person has cancer or not.D. Cancers have nothing to do with a person’s habits and living conditions.15. What would be the best title for the passage?A. A simple way to cancerB. Cancers can be curedC. How to find cancerD. 高三上学期第二次周考英语试题Ⅰ阅读理解(共18小题;每小题2分,满分36分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
It's not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice. Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. JohnsonB.
