He wanted to help the girl up, but his mother stopped him and said, “Don’t do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down.” Another day, the mother was shocked to see Xiao Ming just let the fallen oil bottle be, so she s aid to him angrily, “Can’t you see the fallen oil? Why didn’t you straighten it up?” But Xiao Ming said to his mother, “If I had straightened the bottle up, you would have thought that I did it.”I disagree with what the mother did in the story. I think parents should set a good example to their children. They should not only care for their children’s health, but their minds. They should let their children know it is a pleasure to help others who are in trouble, because we live in the society which is a big family for all of us.There is no doubt that everyone should go all out to contribute to our society.1。

We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County. Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons. I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle. At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.I am a placemaker. A homemaker, too. I am a mother of a young kid at home, and alsoa writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to cultivate a place and share it with others. The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880. It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker’s dozen of egg—laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, many trees.Living with my life’s purpose does not allow for much travel. I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes. Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees. But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I slow down and pay attention to the road between here and there, travel tells me the connections between my place and all the other places.5. The underlined word“placemaker’’in the 4th paragraph refers t o someone who . A.devotes most of his energy and time to building his houseB.is ready to help anyone in need in the communityC.makes a creative design for others’ housesD.is good at cultivating a place and sharing it with others8. What can be the best title of the passage?A.On the Way Home B.Never Travel againC.Escape from a Family Life D.Life on the FarmCWe can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging. His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.According to Shen, it is the kidney which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper. We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves. So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young? This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.9. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?A. By studying Western medicine.B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.10. What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?A. Medical treatment.B. People’s good kidney.C. Level of people’s act ivity.D. Positive life attitude.11. The reason why people become old is that _________.A. their bodies are unable to fight diseasesB. their bodies produce T-cellsC. they have reduced strength, loss of hairD. they become weaker and weaker12. We can probably learn from the passage that _________.A. people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the bodyB. the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for healthC. it remains unknown how effective Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine isD. producing more low calorie food allows people to keep youngDAt most schools, “going green” means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle. But at New York’s Riverdale Country School, it means being encouraged to run and even jump in the hallway. That’s because the school was the first to install ( 安装 ) the specially-designed Pavegen floor tiles (地砖) in America. The tiles use kinetic energy (动能) expanded by the kids and transform it into electricity that can be used to power classroom lights, science projects and charge electronic devices. The first US installation of Pavegen tiles near the school’s student center is thanks to 14-year-old Zach Halem, who managed to convince the officials to purchase them.Besides providing fun green energy, the tiles also serve as a learning tool. Every time a student steps on one, a brightly-lit LED board provides instant feedback (反馈信息) on how much energy was generated. Depending on the force, every step results in between one to seven watts-enough power to light an LED street lamp for about 30 seconds.Made largely from rubber and other recycled materials the tiles are invented by the 26-year-old British industrial designer Laurence Kembell-Cook. While new to the US, they have been installed in numerous places in Europe, ranging from a London underground station to a marathon track in Paris. However, it was not until Pavegen started getting popular in London schools that Laurence realized that his invention not only saved energy, but was also fun!Though the young inventor will not give too many details about the technology behind this green tile, he says that it is very different from other kinetic energy harvesting systems.Whatever the secret, let’s hope more US schools decide to install these fun tiles. In fact, why stop at schools? These tiles could be installed everywhere, from sidewalks to homes. Then we could all be “green” a nd have fun! Who knew that was even possible?13. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. American students are encouraged to run and jump as much as possible.B. “Going green” means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle.C. N ew York’s Riverdale Country School took a different way to go green.D. New York’s Riverdale Country School is the first US school to try new ways to go green.14. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Laurence Kembell-Cook?A. His original motive to invent the Pavegen tiles was to save energy.B. He believed his invention would be popular with students.C. He keeps all the technology behind this green tile a secret.D. He persuaded the school to install Pavegen tiles.15. Which par t of a website is the passage probably taken from?A. Science.B. Architecture.C. Education.D. Agriculture.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our services were strictly held at the pet owner’s home. It was almost too busy for the two of us, but we were making good money! We asked pet owners new to our services to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meetings before the owner leaves. One day, we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog, Hercules. He playfully jumped on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures.“ We do not yet know the mechanisms involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected,”the researchers said.“Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can' t yet quantify.”The change was big in cold - blooded animals.Only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make reptiles (爬行动物) smaller. An increase of 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism(新陈代谢). Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growth. There is a recent report on warmer temperatures' negative effects on plankton(浮游生物), the base of the marine ecosystem.Warm - blooded animals weren't immune from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. More importantly though, he appeared safely seven hours later, completing with exciting-photos and videos from this dark mysterious world that has been visited by only two humans before!Seated inside a specially built 12-ton green submersible (潜水器) called the Deep Sea Challenger, the brilliant filmmaker caught every moment of his 2-hour-36-minute journey down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench on video — given that it is 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and a mile deeper than Mount Everest.Absolutely nothing! There were no large alien creatures or mysterious footprints — just a flat desolate (荒凉的) landscape, 50 times larger than the Grand Canyon. Mr. Cameron describes it as "devoid (缺乏) of sunlight, any heat, any warmth". The only things swimmingaround, were some tiny shrimp-like (虾状的) creatures no bigger than an inch. While the 57-year-old had expected to spend six hours at the bottom, he was forced to return in three hours, because the robotic arm that was supposed to help him collect samples went wrong and began leaking oil. He also lost some thrusters (推进器) and a whole starboard side, causing the submersible to spin around in circles. However, these small setbacks did not make the whole trip any less exciting for Mr. Cameron. The director, who returned to the surface in a speedy seventy minutes, believes this is just one of many trips he and other adventurers will be taking. In fact, Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, is currently in the midst of planning a similar trip to the Puerto Rico Trench that lies five miles below the surface of the water. Though Mr. Cameron’s is promising to move his historic trip into an exciting 3-D National Geographic documentary, he is tight-lipped about how the experience will be used in his next movie! We cannot wait to see!12. According to Paragraph one,we can know that _________.A. Why did Mr. Cameron return earlier than planned?A. Because he finished all his tasks.B. Because he couldn't stand the environment.C. Because there was something wrong with his submersible.D. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _________.A. many similar trips will be taken in the near futureB. the small setbacks had a great effect on Mr. CameronC. some people have known how Cameron's experience will be used in his next movieD. the trip to the Puerto Rico Trench is more dangerous and difficult than to the Mariana Trench第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AMy husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving. Two days later I appeared at the house, alone. I came up to Hercules and said hello happily. I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made. Meanwhile, he was so lovely sitting beside. I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners, a usual service. After the light and “click” sound went off, Hercules rushed at me. I didn’t know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood. I ran out and did the only thing — calling my husband. Then I went to neighbors for help. My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen (圈). Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nurses quickly moved me to a room. I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner, “ Am I going to die?” He replied, “Finally.”1. It can be inferred from the text that the author was attacked because _______.A. Hercules feared the sound and the flashB. the author attacked Hercules firstC.
