They buy a large number of newspapers and magazines and even of books-especially paperbacks(平装书), which are still rather cheap in spite of the ever-increasing rises in the cost of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books too, printed on good paper and fastened between hard covers. There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize(专营) in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here the bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the famous one which calls itself “the biggest book-shop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will get any kind of books, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the many subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes in books about ballet!26. Compared with “paperbacks”, as is suggested in this passage, “proper” books are ____.A. more valuableB. more costlyC. more enjoyable to readD. more difficult to read27. This passage has mentioned all of the following except _____.A. the Londoners as book loversB. the various subjects of booksC. the size of the booksD. the size of the bookshops28. “The biggest book shop in the world” is perhaps _____.A. words from the shop owner’s advertisementB. a lie by the shop owner to cheat the readersC. a praise of the shop from the writer of the passageD. a praise of the shop from readers in London29. When the writer mentions “the tiny, dusty little places”, he refers to ____.A. very useful bookshopB. very dirty bookshopsC. very convenient bookshopsD. very old bookshops30. By saying “Dickens’ time”, the writer referred to _____.A. a period of time when Dickens was still livingB. a period of time when people liked to read Dickens’ novelsC. a period of time when Dickens’ novels were soldD. a period of time when Dickens was famousBI hear many parents say that their teenage children are rebellious(反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a god look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one ano ther’s hands for safety. They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(茧) into a large cocoon. It is becoming harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励) high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the difficulty is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.31. The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell ____.A. readers how to be popular in the worldB. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselvesC. parents how to control and guide their childrenD. people how to understand and respect each other32. According to the writer, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but,in fact, most of them _____.A. have much difficulty in understanding each otherB. are not sure of themselvesC. dare not do thingsD. are very much afraid of getting lost33. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. There is no popularity that really counts.B. What many parents are doing is actually keeping their children from finding their ownpaths.C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.D. Most teenagers say they want to do what they like to, but in fact they are doing the same.34. During the teenager years, one should learn to ______.A. become different from others in as many ways as possibleB. get into the right season and become popularC. find one’s real selfD. rebel against parents35. From the passage we can get the conclusion that ______.A. the writer is for the teenagers to be themselvesB. the writer is against the teenagers to be themselvesC. the writer does not care whether the teenagers should be themselves or notD. the writer wishes the parents to be themselvesV. Mary is a high school student, who devoted herself to her lessons every day. The habit of attention becomes part of our life,if we begain early enough.I often hear grown up people say“I could not fix my attention on the sermon or book, although I wished to do so”,and the reason is,the habit was not formed in youth. If I were to live my life over again,I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory.I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately;but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power. 1.Everyone is equal,r__________of his race, skin religion or educational level.2.Teachers are in d_________need in this area.3.We had no way to c___________him of this matter.4.To our a________,he had trouble overcoming all the problems smoothly.5.In Canada,I o________my Master’s degree.6.The well is100meters in d________.7.Owing to lack of enough food, some children were s_________to death.8.When will a__________the tough task is still a puzzle to us.9.His high income c__________for his bills for treating disease.10.I made a learning plan to study hard,in r__________to my teacher’s help and kindness. Lao Tzu was traveling with his followers. They came to a forest__1__hundreds of woodcutters were cutting the trees.__2__whole forest had been cut except for one big tree__3__thousands of branches. It was so big__4__10,000persons could sit in its shade.Lao Tzu told his followers__5__(go)and ask why this tree had not been cut. They went and asked the woodcutters and they said,“This tree is absolutely__6__(use).You cannot make anything out of it because every branch has so many knots in it—nothing is straight. You cannot use it as fuel because the smoke is dangerous__7__the eyes.his tree is absolutely useless, and that’s__8__we haven’t cut it.”The followers came back and told Lao Tzu.He laughed and said,“Be like this tree.If you are useful you will be cut and you will become furniture in somebody’s house. If you are beautiful you__9__(sell)in the market.Be like this tree, and you will grow big and vast and thousands of people will find shade under__10__.” AMy son Mark and I were eager to enjoy a day out together, which was a rare occasion when a father and a son can share each other’s life totally without other things. So we settled for a sharing of seaside golf.I write here not as a good golfer in the technical sense, but hopefully as a“good”player who enjoys a round in the group of family or friends, who tries hard to win but who doesn’t mind losing to the better golfer. Sadly,“good golfers”in that sense are becoming harder to find in a competitive world.I’m not sure whether I understand golf myself,or why adults spend so much time, money and energy in trying to knock a small white ball into a tiny hole. However,it is more than a game—it is a lesson in life.People always try hard to win a match.Even worse, some have found it hard to lose gracefully to their close friends,or to their own sons.Sometimes such winners are really losers.I have played golf for more than twenty years, and it was obvious that I,playing quite well by my standards, would win.But on this particular morning,I realized that Mark was grown up and was beating his father for the first time.In fact,I wanted him to win,but I was equally prepared to play on to a“sudden death”if necessary. He hit it,and the ball rolled gently into the hole!A beam of joy lit up his face, and I felt deeply proud in my heart,“That’s my boy.”1.Why did the writer and his son decide to enjoy a round of seaside golf?A.They desired to stay together without interruption.B.They both thought seaside golf was very interesting.C.That was the only time that playing golf was free of charge.D.The writer wanted to teach his son how to play golf.2.According to the passage, playing golf needs the following EXCEPT________.A.timeB.moneyC.energyD.courage3.Which of the following would the writer agree with?A.Playing golf is a waste of time.B.There is no need for a golfer to try hard to win.C.Those who don’t want to win are good golfers.D.It isn’t the most important whether to win or not.4.According to the passage, the writer plays golf mainly to________.A.enjoy a good time with family or friendsB.find a really good golfer in the matchC.prove that Dad plays better than the sonD.see that his son has grown upBWe start forming impressions of people we meet from the moment we see them.A large part of the first impression that you create comes from your body language.Your facial expression, eye contact, hands and posture speak louder than your words.FaceYour face is the most expressive part of your body.If you are feeling anxious, your facial expression may make you look cold, disapproving,or unhappy. You can break this misrepresentation by trying to smile.Your smile is one of the strongest tools you have when you meet new people. It will help you appear warm, friendly and confident.EyesOur eyes give clues to our emotions.Making very little eye contact can convey either shyness or fear.A gaze says that you are friendly and relaxed.HandsYour hands are also very expressive.Open gestures tend to make you appear open and honest.By pointing your finger,or moving your hands closer together, you can draw emphasis to what you are ed properly, hand gestures can make you seem enthusiastic(热情的).Making too many gestures can make you appear uncontrolled.Touching your sleeves or face can make you appear nervous.PostureYour posture makes a big contribution to your body language and conveys your level of self-confidence. By placing your body towards someone, you show attentiveness.By falling away from them or leaning back, you show a lack of interest. When we don’t have confidence and want to hide away,we keep our heads down.In summary, our face, eyes, hands and posture express what is going on inside us.They give clues to others whether the words we are saying are consistent with what we are really ing good body languages can bring up our self-confidence.5.According to the first paragraph, the first impression you usually give others is from your________.A.interesting wordsB.attractive lookC.polite attitudeD.body language6.The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means________.A.a false impressionB.an uncomfortable atmosphereC.a kind of unfriendly behaviorD.the situation that one can’t bear7.Touching your face with your own fingers probably makes you appear__________.A.enthusiasticB.nervousC.uncontrolledD.honest8.Which of the following is a good effect of using your body language?A.Giving clues to show your status within a group.B.Conveying what you are really feeling inside.C.Bringing up your level of self-confidence.D.Giving signals about your interest in something.

In all one's lifetime it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But it is precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of.
When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach; luck and opportunities will come your way and you are overjoyed that they constitute part of your worth. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself, mistaking difficulties and adversities for your own incompetence. It's likely that you think it wise for yourself to know our place and stay aloof from worldly wearing a mask of cowardice, behind which the flow of sap in your life will be retarded.

Remember, there is no such thing as failure. There is only education记住!
When we feel like we have failed at something, discouragement often follows. However, failure doesn’t really exist, except for the meaning that we give it. If we don’t get the result that we want, when we want it, we just need to take new action.
We can choose, instead of thinking of failure as bad, to think of failure as education, and therefore good. When we view it this way we realize that failure isn’t something that is bad, or something to be avoided. It is simply feedback. When we think this way we ease discouragement.
