Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1 The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary- school teaching (pupil aged 11-16),and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s,the number of graduates who say they would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2 The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary, Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer, young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24,is a good example: “I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher-training course to become a maths teacherbut when I looked into details, it became clear that teaching isn’t a very lucrative (赚钱的)job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher•”3 It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to beteachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam,an accountant from London: “I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4 “I love teaching; it’s my passion. I’ve been a secondary-school teacher of Spanish for ten years now, and although it’s a very demanding job, it’s very satisfying. When I see my students passing their Spanish exams, or singing along to Spanish pop songs, it makes me feel so proud,” says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he think the government should do to encourage more people to become teachers? “My view is that the government should reduce the burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do.”5 The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage isa very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. “HopefUlly,” the report concludes, “these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the fliture.”22. The Polynesian Voyaging Society had organized the expedition. Its purpose was to find out if seafarers (海员)in the distant past could have found their way from one island to the other without navigational instruments, or whether the islands had been populated by accident. At the time, Mau was the only man alive whoknew how to navigate just by observing the stars, the wind and the sea.He had never before sailed to Tahiti, which was a long way to the south. However, he understood how the wind and the sea behave around islands, so he was confident he could find his way. The voyage took him and his crew a month to complete and he did itHis grandfather began the task of teaching him how to navigate when he was still a baby. He showed him pools of water on the beach to teach him how the behaviour of the waves and wind changed in different places. Later, Mau used a circle of stones to memorize the positions of the stars. Each stone was laid out in the sand to represent a star. The voyage proved that Hawaii's first inhabitants came in small boats and navigated by reading the sea and the stars. Mau himself became a keen teacher, passing on his traditional secrets to people of other cultures so that his knowledge would not be lost. On British NewspapersBesides the daily newspapers, there are a number of Sunday newspapers in Britain. Many of them are connected with the "dailies", though not run by the same editor and his members. The Sunday papers are larger than the daily papers and usually contain more articles concerned with comment (评论) and general information rather than news. The national daily and Sunday papers have the largest circulation(发行) in the world. Of the Sunday papers, the Observer and the Sunday Times are the best known. It is a regrettable fact that the number of magazines of a literary or political nature has dropped down since the war. This has probably been caused by the ever-wider use of radio and television. The most successful magazines are those published for women. Their covers are designed to catch the eye, and they certainly succeed in doing so! They offer their readers articles on cookery (烹饪法), fashion, needlework, and many other matters of women interest. They also provide advice to those in love, and adventures with handsome heroes. Some women's magazines also include serious articles of more general interest. The visitor who looks at the magazines displayed in a large bookstall (书摊) which may be found in an important railway station will notice that there is a wide variety of technical or semitechnical(半专业的) books and magazines. There are magazines for the motorist, the farmer, the gardener, the nurse, and many others. There are many local and regional newspapers. It is common in Britain for a news agent(报刊经售人) to deliver (投递) the morning papers to his customers for a small extra payment, this service is usually performed by boys and girls who want to earn some pocket-money.(分数:7.00)(1).Some Sunday newspapers may belong to the same publishing company but are not edited by the same group of people.(分数:1.00)A.A) Right√B.B) WrongC.C) Not mentioned解析:(2).It is obvious that daily newspapers carry more information than the Sunday papers.(分数:1.00)A.A) RightB.B) Wrong√C.C) Not mentioned解析:(3).The Observer carries more political articles than The Sunday Times.(分数:1.00)A.A) RightB.B) WrongC.C) Not mentioned√解析:(4).The most successful magazines in Britain are those published for women.(分数:1.00)A.A) Right√B.B) WrongC.C) Not mentioned解析:(5).In Britain men do not like reading magazines.(分数:1.00)A.A) RightB.B) WrongC.C) Not mentioned√解析:(6).Bookstalls only sell technical or semi-technical magazines.(分数:1.00)A.A) RightB.B) Wrong√C.C) Not mentioned解析:(7).Many boys and girls deliver morning newspapers to make some pocket-money.(分数:1.00)A.A) Right√B.B) WrongC.C) Not mentioned解析:三、{{B}}第3部分:概括大意与完成句子{{/B}}(总题数:2,分数:8.00)阅读下面这篇短文,短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第2~5段每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中选择4个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。
