Presentation script
Presentation script2.1 The Goal of Moral EducationIn ancient China, the upper nobility is the only stratum which has the authority to obtain the education in public school; however, until the occurrence of Confucius, he sets off the private school so that more social class can have an equal chance to be educated. His educational system aims to train the people to enter into the dominance hierarchy. Under such circumstance, as a teacher, Confucius wishes to restore education and true political reality to the people. He promotes the moral senses, “governing with morals” and “loving the people” which are the two primary aspects of “Li” (Confucius 73). He believes the rule of law is mandatory that can solely constrain and govern the behavior of people, but only virtue and morals can influence people‟s heart and spirit. Therefore, the goal of Confucius‟ thought of moral education is to cultivate all the people in the society. Through this moral education, an ideal world which is full of “Li” and “Ren” would be fulfilled.2.2 Teaching contentConfucius‟ instructing contents had a wide coverage, including: morality, knowledge, physical culture, art and aesthetics(美学), rites and music, diplomacy, medicine and health care, politics and economy, military affairs and law, etc. He took moral education as the core of his instruction and the instructions of other contents were all round it.3.1 BackgroundConfucius [551-479 BCE] and Plato [circa 428-347 BCE] are two masters of culture in the period of “axial age” in Eas tern and Western societies (Jaspers 99). Both of them contribute the various and diverse thoughts in the area of politics, ethics, morals, educations, and so on so forth. These two kinds of great thoughts have occupied the unshakeable position in the long course of human society. Even though Confucius and Plato get more than one century apart from each other, there are many striking similarities of their background, educational thoughts, etc. On the one hand, these two great thinkers leave a series of thought legacy about morals and ethics, which lie at the centre of their philosophies; on the other hand, as two great educationalists, they also put these moral thoughts into their daily educational activity practice.Nevertheless, their moral education thoughts remain a large number of differences that reflect lots of different characteristics on ancient Eastern and Western societies. Indeed, during the long process of teaching experience, Confucius gradually develops his own system of moral education thoughts, which are to advocate the idea of “Ren”[1]as a core value and the idea of “Li”[2] as amodality (Su 142). Whereas, to deal with the topic of “how to live best,” Plato brings forward his thoughts of moral education: to train body, mind, and soul according to his theory of Form and theory of Knowledge (Mihaela 43). Regardless of the fact of these differences, both of these thoughts are precious wealth of human society, and whatsoever make a great contribution of moral education thoughts to the future generations to come.3 .2 .Absorbed some knowledge related to Confuc ius‟ and Plato‟s thoughts recently, today I would like to make a comparison between Confucius‟ and Plato‟s educational ideas in follow.A] Similarity:1] Both of them emphasize the importance of education. As far as they are concerned, Education plays an important role in individual‟s development and a nation‟s prosperity. Education can help cultivate and select excellent humans. 2] For teaching content, both of Confucius and Plato pay attention to the training of music, morality and physical education. They believe it is necessary to emphasize students‟ integrated development.3] For teaching method, both of Confucius and Plato advocated life-long learning.B] Differences:1] The purpose of educationFor Confucius, education is to cultivate perfect men with both good character and professional competence to take office with kindness. For example, he said “those who excel in learning should take office.” While for Plato, education is to cultivate a governor, full of ration and likes pursuing truth. Plato believes that the community should be ruled by those who have special talents and function is rational direction of public affairs, “so the individual‟s life should be under the rule of the highest faculty-reason.”2] Teaching targetsFor Confucius, he advocates that he instructs regardless of kind—“to anyone who spontaneously came to me with a bundle of dried pork, I have never denied instruction.” But he thinks people are close to one another; through practice, they drift far apart; therefore, he classifies students into different kinds. “To people above average, one can impart higher things; to people below average, one cannot impart higher things.” Besides, Confucius does not agree women should have the right to receive education as men.Contrarily, Plato is for elite-education. He thinks people were born differently. He chooses elites who have talents and capacities to be educated to be governors in the future according to his judges and standards; he chooses those who have less talents but have strong wills and bodies to be trained to bemiddle-classes—soldiers or officers working for governors; he chooses those who he thinks have lusts to be trained to be laborer serving the governor. To this extent, I think Confucius did better than Pl ato because according to Confucius‟ classification, more people would have the chance to receive education. However, Plato is more advanced in terms of the issue of whether women have rights to receive education as men. Moreover, Plato pays attention to ch ildren‟s education. He even talked the importance of fetus education at his time, while Confucius did less in this area. In Plato‟s opinion, it would be harmful to initiate the young into this rational moral understanding prior to an advanced stage in their education. 3] Teaching ContentDespite similarities of Plato‟s and Confucius‟ teaching contents, there are still some differences in this area. Actually, Confucius emphasizes more on moral education while Plato stresses more on science and rational education. I think this difference is also the difference between eastern and western cultures.4] Teaching MethodPlato thinks teaching is a kind of …recall‟ and …recollect‟—everyone has a pre-body life during which the soul is originally acquainted with some knowledge. When people receive education, it is the way of reminding people of the knowledgehe/she had already and innately knows by the teacher. While Confucius stresses the importance of learning after people were born. He said “To study and not think is a waste. To think and not study is dangerous." And "I was not born with wisdom. I love the ancient teachings and have worked hard to attain to their level." Besides, Confucius advocated teaching students according to their personalities differently. In brief, Confucius and Plato are two great educators in history. I admit that both of them have some demerits to some extent, however, their wisdom and contribution in the field of education still can help enlighten us in nowadays‟ education. For those merits, we need to continue to develop; for these demerits, we shall regard them dialectically.4 His examples and teaching have cast great impact on the development of human society, having not only a far-reaching historical significance, but also an important and realistic significance. In 1988, the Nobel Prize winners made the assertion in Paris that if mankind is to survive it must go back 25 centuries in time to tap the wisdom of Confucius.。

[Eric’s speech, translation on ppt]Eric’s speech:As I look at the graduates, I must say that all of you look wonderful. It’s nice to see everyone follow a dress code for once! Over the past ten months, I have had the chance to get to know most of you. We’ve had some really good times. We’ve also had times where you have driven me crazy, such as when you are yelling in class, and I don’t speak Chinese, so I don’t understand why you’re yelling. Or when you try to give me a cake and tell me that the fruit on it is Blueberries, and NOT grapes, when in fact it is Cherries. I hope you wrote about that instance of irony on your English 12 exam, Cherry. You’ve made me laugh, you’ve made me yell, but most importantly, you’ve made me proud. I look at each of you here today, and even though I did not have the opportunity to teach all of you, I still was able to get a sense of who you are. I want to thank you for making me feel welcome in a new school. For treating me like a teacher you’ve known for years. For seeing me in the hallway and smiling and saying “hello”. Those things make a difference. If I can give you any advice before you all head out on separate journeys, it is this: keep being yourselves. Stay true to who you are and never let anyone tell you what you cannot do. Always be you; you cannot spell beautiful without it. Thank you and enjoy YOUR night.当我注视着毕业生们,我想说你们真的都很棒。

The Graduate•Genre: Romance, Drama, Black Comedy 黑色幽默(black humor)•Plot Keywords: Love, Coming Of Age (成年), Satire讽刺, Infidelity不忠, Surreal超现实, Suspense悬念, Racy不雅, Love Triangle三角恋, Law, Marriage, Melodrama 情节剧Tagline: This is Benjamin. He's a little worried about his future.Plot: Director Mike Nichols's THE GRADUATE is the satirical coming-of-age comedy that became an emotional touchstone标准for an entire generation. In the mid-1960s, Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a confused college graduate, is pulled in myriad directions by family, friends, and associates just days after receiving his degree. Seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), an older friend of the family, Ben carries on an affair with the married woman even as he falls for her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross). However, Ben and Elaine's attempts at romance are threatened by the spiteful rage of Mrs. Robinson, who proceeds to hastily arrange Elaine's marriage to someone else, leading up to one of the most memorable endings in cinema history. With its striking photography and clever editing, THE GRADUATE established Nichols as a major director. The film also made a star out of young Hoffman, who gives an understated portrayal of the perplexed Ben--the actor's first role in a Hollywood film, which he almost didn't get because he wasn't Waspy enough. Outstanding performances by the rest of the cast are highlighted by Bancroft's sexy, embittered turn as Mrs. Robinson and Ross's endearing presence as the gorgeous yet innocent Elaine. The film's impact on popular culture is immeasurable: "Plastics" will live on eternally as depressing but solid career advice, and older women will never eye younger men without fear of becoming a "Mrs. Robinson." Buck Henry (who appears briefly in the film) cowrote the influential screenplay, based on the novel by Charles Webb, and the soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel remains a movie classic....Movies by HimTootsie (1982) .... Do you meet someone? Why do you ask? - Well, it's your business.I don't want to play games. - Wait!I don't meet anyone, but why? - I don't want to pry into your life, but I would rather you didn't say anything then be dishonest. - Wait! Wait a minute!Wait a minute, please.Mrs. Robinson, do you think we could talk a little first this time?I don't think we have much to say to each other. For months, all we've done is come up here and leap into bed.Are you tired of it? - I'm not, no.But do you think we could liven it up with some talk? - About what? Anything at all.Do you want to tell me about your college experiences? - Oh, my God! Think of another topic. How about art? - That's good. You start it off.You start it off. I know nothing about it.Are you interested more in Modern or in Classical Art?Neither. - Neither? Why do you want to talk about it? - I don't.We're going to have a conversation! Tell me what you did today.I got up.I fixed breakfast for my husband. - That's something we can talk about. Your husband! - Oh, him.I mean everything. I don't know anything about how you work this. What do you say when you leave? - Nothing, he's asleep. - Always? Doesn't he wake up when you come home? - We have separate bedrooms. Oh, I see. So you don't...I don't want to pry, but you don't sleep with him? - No.How long has this been going on? Why did you marry him?See if you can guess. - I can't. - Think real hard.I can't see why you did, unless... Were you forced to marry him?Don't tell Elaine. - You had to marry him because you got pregnant. Are you shocked?I never thought of you two as... - Alright, let's get to bed.Wait a minute! So how did it happen? - What? You and Mr. Robinson. Do you feel like telling me the circumstances? Not really. Was he a law student at the time? And you were a student also?At college? - Yes.What was your major? Why are you asking all the questions? - Because I'm interested. What was your major at college?Art. - Art?But I thought...I guess you lost interest in it over the years then.Kind of.How did it happen? What? - You and Mr. Robinson. How do you think? - In his room, or did he take you to a hotel? What does it possibly matter? - I'm curious. We'd go to his car. - In a car you did it?I don't think we were the first. - What kind of car was it?What? - Do you remember the make of the car?Oh, my God! - I want to know! - A Ford.A Ford!A Ford! God damn it, that's great! That's enough. So old Elaine Robinson got started in a Ford.Don't talk about Elaine. - Don't talk about Elaine? No.Why not?Because I don't want you to. - Why don't you tell me then? There's nothing to tell. - Why is she a big taboo subject?I guess I'll have to ask her out and find out what the big deal is.Don't you ever take that girl out! Do you understand that?I have no intention of taking her out.Good.I was just kidding around.Good.But why shouldn't I?I have my reasons. - Let's hear 'em. - No. - I think I know the reason.I'm not good enough for her, am I? I can't even talk about her, can I?Let's drop it. - No! I'm good enough for you, but not for your daughter! That's it, isn't it?Yes.You go straight to hell, Mrs. Robinson!Do you think I'm proud of all this? - I wouldn't know. - I'm not.I'm not proud that I spend my time with a broken-down alcoholic.I see. - I come here for no reason other than sheer boredom. This is the sickest, most perverted thing that ever happened to me.Do what you want, I'm done with this! - Are you? - Goddamn right! That's how you feel? That I'm sick and disgusting? - Don't start this. What? - Don't start acting hurt. - Don't you expect me to be hurt? You told me I'm not good enough for Elaine. - Did I?In so many words.I want to apologize to you if that's the impression you got.Two minutes ago you told me I wasn't good enough, now you say you're sorry!I didn't mean it. I don't think you'd be right for each other.I would never say you weren't as good a person as she is.You wouldn't?Of course I wouldn't.What are you doing? - It's pretty obvious you don't want me around.I was kind of upset there.I'm sorry I said those things. - It's alright.I can understand why I'm disgusting to you. - I dunno.I like you or I wouldn't keep coming here if I didn't like you.Wasn't it sickening? - It's not...I enjoy it. I look forward to it. It's the one thing I look forward to.You don't have to say that. - I wouldn't, not if it wasn't true.May I stay then?Yes, please, I want you to.Thank you. - Don't thank me. Because I want you to.But you won't ever take Elaine out, will you? I want you to promise. Why did you bring this up? It never occurred to me. - Then give your word. This is absurd.Promise me, Benjamin.Alright. For Christ's sake, I promise I'll never take Elaine out.Thank you.Let's not talk about it.Let's not talk at all.Elaine's back from school. It might be a nice gesture if you asked her out.I guess she's not good enough for you? - Elaine and I do not get along. You haven't seen her since high school! I guess your eveningsare just too valuable. - That has nothing to do with it.I'll just have to tell Mr. Robinson that you're too busy every evening.I do. -... then I will just have to invite the Robinsons over Thursday.Well, Braddock, it's about time you got around to doing this.Your wife thinks you would say... "Katy Duvalle..."No points, right. Here's the next question. What's your wife's most unusual habit?Come on in! I'm afraidthe young lady isn't quite ready yet. What would you say to a short one? Scotch still your drink? - Bourbon. Not shaving her legs.I'll see if she's ready yet. This was my father's idea! - Benjamin, I thought I made myself perfectly clear about this. We'll go to dinner and have a drink and I'll bring her right back.It was that or a dinner party for both families, and I couldn't handle that.I have no intention of ever taking her out again, so don't get upset! But I am. I'm extremely upset about it, Benjamin.Hello.Hello.I want you to keep your wits tonight. You never know what tricks Ben picked up back there in the East. You're living at home now, right? - Yes.Do you know what you're going to do? - No.Are you going to Graduate School? - No.Do you always drive like this? - Yes.Sit down! Why don't you watch the show?Do you dislike me for some reason? - No, why should I?I don't know. You're missing a great effect here. How do you like that?Could you do it?Elaine, I'm sorry. Will you take me home now? - I'm sorry I took you in there.Where's the car? - I want to tell you something.I just want to go home. - But can I just tell you one thing? What? - This date was my parents' idea. They forced me into it.That's very nice of you to tell me. - No, I mean I'm not really like this.I hate myself like this.Could you just stop crying? - No, I couldn't.But could you try? - No.Since I graduated, I feel like I have to always be rude. Do you understand?Yes, I do.It's like I've been playing a game, but the rules don't make any sense. They're being made up by all the wrong people. No,I mean no one makes them up, they seem to make themselves up.I wonder if I could request you to turn that down a little?I wouldn't want to wake anyone up. - We won't.Let's go inside.Wait a minute. - Is anything wrong?I was thinking. It's still early.Maybe we could do something, go somewhere else.Alright.Where are we going? - Where is a place to have a drink?Isn't there one in the Taft Hotel? What is the matter?Nothing! I'm just wondering if they have a bar? Let's go see.Let's go see if they do or not.It seems to me there isn't a bar here. - Yes, there is. Look, the Palm Room! Good evening. - How are you, sir?Good evening, Mr. Gladstone. - Hello again.Hi, Mr. Gladstone. How are you this evening?Let's go somewhere else. - Do they know you? - Of course not!Good evening, sir. - Come on, we're leaving.Mr. Gladstone, how are you? What's happening? - They must think that I'm Gladstone.Hello, Mr. Braniff.Elaine, I like you. I like you so much.Do you believe that?Do you? - Yes.You're the first...You're the first thing for so long that I've liked. The first person I could stand to be with.My whole life is such a waste. It's just nothing.I'm sorry. I'll take you home now.Are you having an affair with someone?I'm sorry. That's not my business. It just happened. It was just this thing that happened along with everything else. Can you understand that? Was she married or something?Yes.With a family? - Yes. She had a husband and a son.Did they ever find out? - No.And it's all over now?Yes.I'm glad. Can we do something tomorrow? - Alright.During the day? Go for a drive or something. - Okay. You sure you really want to? - Yes.I only want to if you want to. - I do. - You do?Benjamin, I really do.。
