Of all of S haw’s plays,Pygmalion is without the doubt the most beloved and popularly received. Several film versions have been made of the play, and it has even been adapted into a musical. In fact, the film version of 1938 helped Shaw to become the first and only man ever to win the double prize: the Nobel Prize for literature and an Academy Award. Do you still remember the story? Now who can retell it to all of us?A sample retelling version:Pygmalion was a gifted artist. One day,he decided to make a stone statue of a beautiful woman. After that,he spent day and night carving it,and then he clothed the figure, gave it the jewellery, and even named it the Sleeping Love. How he wanted to bring it to life and made it his wife. Therefore,he asked the Greek Goddess to make it alive. And finally the Goddess was moved by his sincere feeling. His wish was granted. Pygmalion threw himself to his feet, the girl smelt down at him. Afterwards, they loved each other and married.T: Can you tell me the theme of the story?S: People tend to behave as you expect they will.T: Excellent!Based on classical myth,Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion plays on the complex business of human relationships in the social world. Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins tutors the very Cockney Eliza Doolittle, not only in the refinement of speech, but also in the refinement of her manners. When the end result produces a very ladylike Miss Doolittle, the lessons learned become much more far reaching. OK,today we will read a story about it. It’s written by t he famous English playwright,George Bernard Shaw.Step ⅡReadingDeal with the Reading part. Play the tape for the students to listen. Then analyze the play. Ask the students to read through the text. While reading, pay attention to the writing style.SkimmingAsk the students to read the play quickly and answer the questions.T: Now please read the play. After a few minutes,I’ll ask you some questions. After a few minutes.T: Who would like to answer the first question: How many characters are there in the play?S1: There are three characters in the play. They are Eliza,Professor Higgins, and Colonel Pickering.T: What is the weather like when the play begins?S2: When the play begins,it is pouring with rain.T: Very good. Do you think Eliza a well-educated woman?Why?S3: No,I don’t think so. In fact, she is poor-educated. We can know it clearly from what she said. For example, come over’ere, cap’in,and buy me flowers off a poor girl. For another,I ain’t done nothing wrong by speaking to that ge ntleman.T: Also,we can learn it from her behavior. For example,“pushes it back at him.” OK. Next one: Why did professor Higgins want to make notes of what Eliza said?S4: He wanted to make a speech, because it’s his profession.T: Very good. Next: What’s the meaning of “the age of the newly rich”?S5: It means people begin their working life in a poor neighborhood of London with 80 pounds a year and end in a rich one with 100 thousand.ScanningAsk three students to read the play.T: Next I will ask three students to read the play again. One will be Eliza, one Professor Higgins, and one Colonel Pickering. OK?Now begin! After several minutes.T: Great. Now I have some more questions. First: According to Higgins,if a person is very poor,he or she can still be better off at last. Do you agree with him?If so,how to realize the aim?S1: Yes. I agree with him. However,in order to realize the aim,he or she must get educated. T: Who can complete the last sentence: in the first line on page 29: Now once taught by me...?S2: Let me try. Once taught by me,she will soon become a lady in the upper class.T: Well done. What other things show one’s statue in society apart from how one speaks?S3: One’s clothing and behavior can also show his statue.T: Do you think Pickering is of the upper class?S4: Yes. I think he is well educated. We can learn it from the way he speaks. For example,“May I ask?”T: Great! Now please listen to the tape carefully and try to catch the main idea of this act.Step ⅢComprehendingThis time the students should listen to the tape as carefully as possible. They should not only pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation but get the main idea of the play as well.T: Pygmalion is a play about recognizing a person’s position in society by the way they behave and speak.Step ⅣDiscussionAsk the students to do Part 5 on page 31.T: Suppose you have a chance to help Eliza improve her use of the English language. Look at the sentences on page 31 in Part 5 and help her correct all these sentences in terms of grammar, spelling, etc,so that she can use them properly.Sample answers:1. Come here, and come in. Buy flowers from me—a poor girl.2. I did nothing wrong when I spoke to that gentleman.3. I thought you maybe was a policeman in disguise.4. How do I know whether you wrote down my words or not?5. You say I can work as a shop assistant? That’s definitely what I want. Then ask the students to read the play again and do Part 2 on page 31.T: We have learned that the social position of the characters influences the way they behave to each other. Generally speaking, people are more polite to those whom they think are of a higher social class (H) and less polite to those they consider are members of a lower class (L). Is this trueof the characters in Shaw’s play? Now please finish Part 2 on page 31. Sample answers to Part 2:Step ⅤHomeworkT: Today’s homework:1. Read the play repeatedly and try to act out the play.2. Preview the grammar part.。

Pygmalion

Pygmalion

Why are there so many references to “what is to become” of Eliza? Trace these references throughout the play. What broader concern for society might Shaw be expressing?George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright of the 20th century, is universallyrecognizedas thegreatestof all dramatistssince Shakespeare.Of his 51plays, we are deeply impressed by many female images, such as Mrs. Warren, Major Barbara, and Joan of Arc etc. Generally speaking, these females mostly are endowed with similar personalities: diligence, courage, independence and rationality. While, from Eliza, the heroine of Pygmalion, we could not find anything doughty in her, but a more human, natural progress of self-awareness and self-growth.The myth of Pygmalion came from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Pygmalion was a sculptor who sculpted an incredibly beautiful maiden for himself, due to his intense antipathy for the secular females. Then, he fell in love with the sculpture and begged Aphrodite to give life to it. Finally Aphrodite turned the sculptureinto a beauty named Galatea; Pygmalion and Galatea got married at last.In Shaw’s play, the linguist Higgins betted with Colonel Pickering that he could turn the rude flower girl Eliza into a fair lady of the upper class by adjusting her pronunciation, making up her appearance and teaching her etiquettes within 6 months.Through kinds of hell-like trainings, they finally succeed. In the myth, the sculpture turned into a beauty and she only knew she was the wife of Pygmalion; in Shaw’s play, Eliza was transformed from humble flower girl into an elegant lady and everyone in the party believed she must be “a Hungarian princess”.Compared withGalatea, the transformation brought Eliza so many puzzles that she lost herself for a time and impelled her to consider self-positioning.There is something more important than the outside changes; that is the self-awareness and self-growth of the heroine. She was no longer aninferior flower girl, but became a resistant who dared to pursue her own dream. The process of the transformation consists of 2 parts: the first three acts focus on the outward appearance of Eliza from flower girl to Hungarian princess. The following two acts pay attention to the inner changes of Eliza from self-lost to self-mastery and self-independence.Under the guidance of Higgins, Eliza had a dramatic change in dressing, conversation and deportment.Ithink all of us who has watched the film, are impressed with Eliza’s appearance in the first act. She wore a black straw hatfilled with dust and soot of London. Her hair was abnormally gray and messy. When she went for Higgins for study, she tried her best to make herself up.Obviously, she thought she had dressed the best cloths to meet customers. While, to Higgins, she was still dressedin ragged, horribly dirty cloths. However, after she took a bath and well-dressed under the help of Mrs. Pierce, Eliza turned into such a comely girl that not only Higgins and Pickeringdidn’t identify her at t he first sight, but also her father made way and apologized to her when met in the door.In order to test the learning outcomes, Higgins took Eliza to her mother’s tea party.Set off by the finery, Eliza gave everyone the impression of dignity and elegance; even won the affection of gentle man Friday. And finally, dressed in splendid attire, she won the attention of everyone at the embassy ball.Changes on her conversation happened after a spell of training. On Mrs Higgins’ tea party, although Eliza’s appea rance was amazing and the pronunciation was formal and correct, she could only talk greetings and weather. Once changed the topic, inelegant vulgar words would take the upper hand. At the end of the third act, everyone believed her to be Hungarian princess due to her pure pronunciation, decent manners and graceful miens. With the transformation of the outward appearance, there also exist painful sufferings in her heart. After the ball, Eliza didn’t feel happy, on the contrast, she felt lost. She realized that, for Professor Higgins, it was just a game and she was only a tool to prove his own achievements. Back to the real life, she was still the poor Eliza. She began ask herself: who am I? What can I do? Where can I go? What can I do in the future?Alsoduring the training, Eliza fell in love with Professor Higgins and wished to gain his love on equal terms. But finally she was disappointed at the arrogant and conceited professor; and began think about her own future. Before figured it out, Eliza left resolutely, just as before, when she first came to find Professor Higgins fearlessly for a simply goal. This kind of character of bravery for independence was the key point for her awareness and growth. In the last act,Eliza was no longer flurried and hysteric but calm and peaceful. From her attitude towards Higgins, we can see that she has figured out her own expectation for life. The future seemed no longer horrible at all. In the last conversation with Higgins, Eliza expressed her design for warmth between hu man:“I want you a little kindness…what I did was not for the taxies and dresses but we were pleasant together…but more friendly like.”She clearly understood the gap between herself and Professor Higgins, so she would not ask Higgins to be fascinated at her just as Friday did, she only wished to be mentally equal with him and gain his care and respect. Now, we can see Eliza gained a thorough cognition about herself and was ready to stand up for herself. At last, Higgins had to admit that:“Eliza, you are incon ceivable. Five minutes ago, you are million stones on my neck, now you are full of e nergy…”From the film The Fair Lady, we can clearly find the trace of themyth of Pygmalion, while we can also feel the differences obviously.Eliza is a living woman full of affections and expectations for life.Once awakened, she will seek for equal treatment and independent life. She is a minded and dignified individual hankering for equality and fraternity between men. Finally this kind of awareness impelled her to find her life orientation and promoted herself-growth.。

Unit 4 Pygmalion[

(Pygmalion)

(Pygmalion)

Pygmalion

Pygmalion
World War I Colonialism and the British Empire
Industrialization The Rise of Women and the Working Classes
World War I
By the end of World War I (as it came to be known later), 8.5 million people had been killed and 21 million wounded, including significant civilian casualties. The war constituted the most intense physical, economic and psychological assault on European society in its history; Britain was not alone in experiencing devastating effects on its national morale and other aspects of society It is ironic. To Shaw, the war only demonstrated more clearly the need for human advancement on an individual and social level, to reach a level of understanding that would prevent such tragic devastation
Industrialization
The growth of industrialization throughout the nineteenth century had a tremendous impact on the organization of British society, which had tradition of a landed aristocracy and a more hierarchical class system pyramid of descending ranks and degrees. Allowing for the growth of a merchant middle class, industrialization changed British society into a plutocracy aristocracy of money more than land. Social mobility, however, still did not widely extend into the lower classes, propagating a lack of opportunity reflected in Lisa's anxiety over what is to happen to her following Higgins's experiment. Urban poverty remained a major social problem after the turn of the century. Pygmalion suggests the subjectivity of class identity, and the rapid deterioration of many pre−mdustri−al social structures, but strict class distinctions of another kind nevertheless persisted.
