Unit 4 Films and film events【导读】当演员是多少人孩提时期的梦想。

人们通常以为演员代表的是光鲜、美丽与富有,但真的是那样吗?【节选】PicturesEight o'clock in the morning.Miss Ada Moss lay in her narrow bed, staring up at the ceiling. Her room, which was right at the top of a tall house in Bloomsbury, smelled of wet clothes and face powder and the bag of fried potatoes she had brought in for supper the night before.‘Oh dear,’thought Miss Moss.‘I am cold.I wonder why I always wake up so cold in the mornings now.My knees and feet and my back—especially my back—are like ice.And I was always so warm in the old days.It isn't because I'm thin.I'm just as wellcovered as I always was. No,it's because I don't have a good hot dinner in the evenings.’She imagined a row of good hot dinners passing across the ceiling, each with a bottle of good strong beer.‘I'd like to get up now,’she thought,‘and have a big sensible breakfast.’Pictures of big sensible breakfasts followed the good hot dinners across the ceiling.Miss Moss pulled the blanket up over her head and closed her eyes.Suddenly, her landlady burst into the room.‘There's a letter for you,Miss Moss.’‘Oh,’said Miss Moss,in a voice which was much too friendly,‘thank you very much,Mrs Pine. It's very good of you to bring me my letters.’‘Oh,it's nothing,’said the landlady.‘I hope it's the letter that you've been waiting for.’‘Yes,’said Miss Moss brightly,‘yes, perhaps it is.I wouldn't be surprised.’‘Well,I'd be very surprised,’said the landlady.‘That's the truth. And can you open it right now, please?A lot of landladies wouldn't even ask—they'd just open it themselves.Things can't go on like this,Miss Moss, indeed they can't.First you tell me you've got the money to pay your rent, then you say you haven't,then there's a letter lost in the post or a theatre manager who's gone to Brighton but will be coming back soon—I'm sick and tired of it all,and I've had enough. At a time like this, too, with the price of everything skyhigh and my poor boy away at the war in France! If you can't pay your rent, there's plenty of other people who wouldgive me good money for a room like this.As my sister Eliza was saying to me only yesterday,Miss Moss,I've been much too softhearted with you!’Miss Moss did not seem to be listening to this. She tore open the letter. It was from a film company.‘No suitable parts for a lady of your experience at present,’she read. She stared at it for a long time before she spoke to her landlady.‘Well,Mrs Pine,’she said.‘I think you'll be sorry for what you've just said. This is from a theatre manager who wants to see me immediately about a part in a new musical show.’But the landlady was too quick for her.She tore the letter out of Miss Moss's hand.‘Oh is it,is it indeed!’she cried.‘Give me back that letter.Give it back to me at once, you bad, wicked woman,’cried Miss Moss. She could not get out of bed because she had a hole in her nightdress.‘Well,Miss Moss,’said the landlady,‘if I don't get my money by eight o'clock tonight, you can get out of my house,my Lady.’The door banged and Miss Moss was alone. She threw back the bedclothes, and sat on the side of the bed, shaking with anger and staring at her fat white legs.‘The old cat,’she said,‘the rotten old cat!’Then she began to pull on her clothes.‘Oh,I wish I could pay that woman! Then I'd tell her what I think of her!’She suddenly saw her face in the mirror, and gave herself a little smile.‘Well, old girl,’she said,‘you're in trouble this time, and no mistake.’But the person in the mirror stopped smiling.‘You silly thing,’said Miss Moss.‘It's no good crying. You'll make your nose all e on!Get dressed, and go out and find a job. That's what you've got to do.’She picked up her bag and shook it.A few small coins fell out.‘I'll have a nice cup of tea at an ABC café before I go anywhere,’she decided.‘I've got enough money for that.’Ten minutes later,a large lady in a blue dress and a black hat covered in purple flowers looked at herself in the mirror, and sang:‘Sweetheart, remember that hope never diesAnd it al—ways is dark—est before sunrise.’But the person in the mirror wouldn't smile at her,and Miss Moss went out. When she came to the ABC café,the door was open. A man was carrying boxes of bread in,and two waitresses were combing their hair and talking.‘My young man came home from France last night,’one of the girls sang happily.‘Oh,I say!How topping for you!’cried the other.‘Yes,wasn't it!He brought me a sweet little brooch.Look,it's got“Dieppe”written on it.’‘Oh,I say!How topping for you!’The man with the boxes of bread came in again, almost knocking Miss Moss over.‘Can I have a cup of tea, please?’she asked. But the waitress went on combing her hair.‘Oh,’she sang,‘we're not open yet.’She turned to the other girl.‘Are we,dear?’‘Oh,no,’said the other waitress.Miss Moss went out.‘I'll go to Charing Cross,’she decided.‘That's what I'll do.And I'll have coffee, not tea.Coffee's more filling. Those girls! Her young man came home;he brought her a brooch...’She began to cross the road.‘Look out,Fatty!’shouted a taxidriver.Miss Moss pretended not to hear.‘No,I won't go to Charing Cross,’she decided.‘I'll go straight to Kig and Kadgit. They open at nine.If I get there early,Mr.Kadgit may have something for me...“I'm so glad to see you,Miss Moss.I've just heard from a manager who wants a lady...exactly the right part for you...three pounds a week...go and see him immediately. It's lucky you came so early.”’But there was nobody at Kig and Kadgit except an old woman washing the floor in the passage.‘Nobody here yet,Miss,’the old woman said.‘Oh,isn't Mr.Kadgit here?’said Miss Moss.‘I'll sit down and wait for him,if I may.’‘You can't wait in the waitingroom,Miss.I haven't cleaned it yet.Mr.Kadgit never comes in before eleven thirty on a Saturday.Sometimes he doesn't come in at all.’‘How silly of me,’said Miss Moss.‘I forgot it was Saturday.’‘Mind your feet, please,Miss,’said the old woman. And Miss Moss was out in the street again. The nice thing about Beit and Bithem was—it was always crowded. You walked into the waitingroom and you met everybody you knew. The early ones sat o n chairs, andthe later ones sat on the early ones' knees, while the men stood around the walls, talking and joking with the ladies.‘Hello,’said Miss Moss,in her friendly way.‘Here we are again!’And young Mr.Clayton did a couple of dancesteps and sang:‘Wai ting for the Robert E.Lee!’‘Mr.Bithem here yet?’asked Miss Moss, powdering her nose.‘Oh,yes, dear!’cried all the girls together.‘He's been here for ages. We've been waiting for more than an hour!’‘Oh dear,’said Miss Moss.‘Any work for us,do you think?’‘Oh,a few jobs in Africa,’said young Mr.Clayton.‘A hundred and fifty a week for two years, you know.’‘Oh!’cried the girls.‘Isn't he a scream?Isn't he too funny?’A dark girl with a sad face touched Miss Moss on the arm.‘I just missed a lovely job yesterday,’she said.‘Six weeks on tour, and then the West End. The manager said I would have got it if I'd been a bit strongerlooking. He said the part was made for me—only I'm too thin.’She stared at Miss Moss, and the dirty, dark red rose on her hat looked as sad and disappointed as she was.‘Oh,dear, that was awfully bad luck,’Miss Moss said, trying hard not to sound too interested.‘What was the show called, may I ask?’But the sad, dark girl understood what Miss Moss wanted, and a mean look came into her heavy eyes.‘Oh,it wasn't a part for you,my dear,’she said.‘He wanted someone young, you know,a dark Spanish type like me.I was too thin, that was the only problem. The door opened and Mr.Bithem appeared. He kept one hand on the door, and held up the other for silence.‘Look he re,ladies’—and here he paused and gave them his famous smile—‘and all you boys,’They all laughed loudly at that.‘I've got nothing for you this e back on Monday.I'm expecting several phone calls on Monday.’Miss Moss pushed desperately through th e crowd.‘Mr.Bithem,I wonder if you've had any news from...’‘Now,let me see,’said Mr.Bithem slowly, staring at her.He had seen Miss Moss four times a week for—how many weeks was it?‘Now,who are you?’‘Miss Ada Moss.’‘Oh yes, yes;of course,my dear. Not yet,my dear. Now I had a call for twentyeightladies today, but they had to be young and able to kick their legs up a e back the week after next—there'll be nothing before that.’电影早上8点钟。

ReadingImportant film events around the worldHost: Welcome to our weekly programme, Movie Magic. Our guests today are representatives from six of the major international film festivals. These spokeswomen and spokesmen will tell us about the festivals they represent. Joining us in the studio are Isabel Rose from the Cannes Film Festival, Hanz Muller from the Berlin International Film Festival, Kathy Barnes from the Sundance Film Festival,Maria Bella from the Venice Film Festival, Mike Taylor from the Toronto International Film Festival and Xu Li from the Shanghai International Film Festival. Welcome, everyone! Maria, do tell us a little about the Venice Film Festival.Maria: Well, I think it is rather appropriate for me to begin our discussion. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world. It is an annual festival that began in 1932. Our festival is part of a larger festival which applauds contemporary art. We view film as a particular type of contemporary art.Host: Kathy, please tell us about the Sundance Film Festival.Kathy:Unlike the Venice Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival only includes small, independent films. That is, the main criterion for being included is that the film must not be financed by Hollywood studios.Maria: Kathy, I don’t like to argue, but in defence of the Venice Film Festival, I have to point out that we don’t just have Hollywood films. Our policy is to include high-quality films, regardless of who makes them. We make no restrictions on the kinds of films we show—as long as a film’s quality meets our standards, we include it. Kathy:The Sundance Film Festival deliberately boycotts all Hollywood films, and we don’t foresee ever including them. The initial idea for our festival was hatched back in 1978, when it was known as the Utah/US Film Festival. However, it was not well known until 1981. It was then that Robert Redford became its sponsor and changed the focus to independent films, often made on very modest budgets. It was given its new name—the Sundance Film Festival—in 1991. Redford has acted in and directed many big Hollywood films, but wanted to expose the public to films made outside of the Hollywood system that ordinary people might have no access to otherwise. Nowadays, if a film wins an award at Sundance, there is a good chance it will become famous!Kathy:Cannes is another festival that can make films famous. Many films are first shown to the public at the Cannes Film Festival, and if a film wins, everyone will hear about it. I think it is fair to say that Cannes is the most famous and exciting festival.Hanz:I hate to contradict you, but in recent years, the Cannes Film Festival has shown special favour to American films. Some people remark that it has taken a step backwards, and is beginning to resemble the Academy Awards in Hollywood too much.Isabel: Well, yes, films shown at Cannes are often made with large budgets, and have well-known actors and directors. Many of them are American, but we reject the idea that we have lost our edge as the best international film festival in the world. We always show a broad range of films from many different countries. In fact, the Cannes Film Festival was started in 1939 because many people felt the Venice Film Festival was giving awards to only German and Italian films.Hanz:Well, in my opinion, the Berlin International Film Festival is one of the most international of all the film festivals. Since it began in 1951, we have given awards to films from all around the globe. At our festival, Hollywood films are in the minority, while films that are likely to be overlooked at other festivals, for example at Cannes, have a real chance of becoming champions.Mike:I’m the spokesman for the Toronto International Film Festival, which began in 1976 and soon became one of the major film festivals around the world. Each year, famous actors, actresses and directors come to Toronto, and the entire film world pays attention to who wins. It is the second largest festival in the world—only Cannes is bigger. We show films from many countries, though we do give some special awards to Canadian films.Xu Li: I represent the Shanghai International Film Festival. Our festival was founded in 1993, so we are perhaps the youngest festival. Even though we have only existed a short time, our festival has a good reputation worldwide. We have entries from many different countries and give the ‘Jinjue’ Award, or Golden Cup Award, to the film thatwe think is the best.ProjectHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)What an amazing film! Who has not dreamt of finding out that he or she is really someone special and famous? That fantasy is reality for Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe). Harry, a sensitive young boy who has a scar on his forehead, has been living with his relatives, the Dursleys. His uncle abuses him, his aunt ignores him, and his cousin hates him. At first, Harry thinks that his parents were killed in a car crash when he was a baby. However, he later finds out that his father was a wizard and that his mother was a witch, both of whom were murdered by an evil wizard—the same wizard who gave Harry the scar. Harry discovers that he possesses a wizard’s powers too, and that he already has a reputation in the world of witches and wizards because of his parents.Hagrid (played by Robbie Coltrane) is a very large person who works at Hogwarts, a special institution for young witches and wizards. He comes to rescue Harry from the Dursleys and take him to the school. They have a few adventures along the way, and Harry is introduced to a whole new world he never knew about—the world of magic. The world of ordinary people exists parallel to the world of magic, but the ordinary people are not aware of it.On the train to school, Harry makes two new friends, Ron Weasley (played by Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson). Together, they learn about their new school and the special curriculum there. Harry has contradictory feelings about his new life. At first, he enjoys it, but later he learns that the evil wizard, V oldemort, is the one who killed his parents. Harry and his partners have a fierce battle with V oldemort to save themselves and their magic world. The film is full of special effects. Watching Harry zoom around on a flying broom could make you feel dizzy, and the school sport of Quidditch is fantastic. The effects are all made with the computer, and are really exciting to watch. All of this is wonderful, but the best part of the film is the acting. This is surprising as the three young actors playing the characters of Harry, Ron and Hermione did not have much experience as actors before making this film. The skill with which these three become their characters is one of the film’s main attractions. They do very well even compared with the adult actors, such as Alan Rickman (Professor Snape), Richard Harris (Headmaster Dumbledore) and Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall).J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, approved the final script of the film. However, many people have complained that the film is too long. At 142 minutes, it is almost a half hour longer than an average film. While the sport of Quidditch is a vital part of the book and of Harry’s school experience, I feel that too much time is devoted in the film to showing it. I think this is more to show off the special effects than to help the film’s plot. Also, it disappoints me that several interesting scenes are not shown in the film. Many people also complain that the film has a tendency to spend too much time showing Harry’s life with the Dursleys. This shows that the film-makers did not give enough thought to who the audience of the film would be. Most people who went to see the film had read the book before going to the cinema. They would already know that Harry is not happy with the Dursleys. The important and interesting parts of the film occur in the world of magic. Much of this early part of the film could have been skipped, and more time could have been spent at Hogwarts.Even with these slight drawbacks, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is still a great film, and I certainly recommend it!。

This analysis of 58 published studies shows that the evidence on which U.S. milk intake recommendations are based is scant.”said study author Dr. Amy Lanou in a statement. The U.S. government has gradually increased recommendations for daily calcium intake, largely from milk products. But the Physicians Committee’s report said increasing consumption of milk products was not necessarily the best way to provide the necessary calcium intake of at least 400 milligrams per day. Other ways to get the absorbable calcium found in one cup of cow’s milk include a cup of orange juice, two packages of instant oats(燕麦), twothirds cup of tofu, or 12/3 cups of broccoli, the report said. And it also pointed out that milk products provide 18 percent of the total fat energy and 25 percent of the total fat intake in the diets of American children who are developing increasing rates of obesity.Frank Greer, who specializes in children’s illnesses at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, said the ideal way to achieve the goal of healthy bones is to make sure children exercise and consume up to 1,300 milligrams a day of calcium.【解题导语】本文主要讲述了仅喝牛奶不能让孩子骨骼强健,理想的方式是进行适当锻炼加上补充足够的钙。

⑬parallel/'pærəlel/adj.

Together, they learn about their new school and the special curriculum⑭there. Harry has contradictory⑮ feelings about his new life.

All of this is wonderful, but the best part of the film is the acting. This is surprising as the three young actors playing the characters of Harry, Ron and Hermione○23 did not have much experience as actors before making this film. The skill with which these three become their characters○24 is one of the film's main attractions○25. They do very well even compared with the adult actors○26,such as Alan Rickman (Professor Snape), Richard Harris (Headmaster Dumbledore) and Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall).J. K. At 142 minutes, it is almost a half hour longer than an average○28 film. While ○29 the sport of Quidditch is a vital part of the book and of Harry's school experience, I feel that too much time is devoted in the film to○30 showing it.
