Tangshan is known far and wide for our delicious snacks and local cuisine. One of our most famous dishes is the Tangshan guobao, which are steamed buns stuffed with all sorts of yummy fillings like braised pork, vegetables, and savory sauces. We also have amazing jianbing, which are crispy crepes with a thin egg coating, topped with scallions, sauce, and sometimes meat or seafood. The movie "Aftershock" brings Tangshan into the focus of concern in recent days. Now, 34 years after the big earthquake, Tangshan has become an important tourist city in North China with six national AAAA level and seven national AAA level scenic spots.
Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park
Located to the north of Yuegezhuang Road in Tangshan, Hebei Province, Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park was built to commemorate the earthquake that killed more than 240,000 people in 1976 in Tangshan. The park is divided into four zones including earthquake ruins, lake area, rubble square area and woods. It demonstrates the theme of "Revere nature, care for human life, pursue science, and remember the past".

On 28 July 1976, a severe earthquake measuring 7.8 Richter scale happened in Tangshan and 240,000 lives were lost. It is one of the 10 severe natural disasters in the 20th century. Almost all buildings were damaged and collapsed and caused a loss of 3 billion Chinese Yuan. After the earthquake, Tangshan has taken the task of city reconstruction for about 10 years, 10 years for renascence and another 10 years for the fast economic development. Nanhu district has rich natural resources and many clues of the city’s history, it is the most important context for building a new urban space for the city. In 2005, an international competition is launched on Urban Design for Nanhu district, Latz + Partner Landschaftsarchi Tekten Planner from Germany won the first prize.
THE COMPETITION:
-40 hectares. Based on the preservation of the earthquake ruin, the idea design should be with consideration of tour routing, site visit and safety of visitors.
-an idea design for the monument or a place for memorial activities reflecting the care and love for
the lives.
-There is an existing workshop to the east side of the ruin, it is intended to rebuild it as a museum of earthquake science, an idea design for the place and space of the museum (building design is not required).
The main entrance of the Memorial Park is at south side of the site linking with Yuegezhuang road. The master plan should clearly indicate the relations of the space and landscape of above 3 parts as well as the routing for visitors.
唐山地震遗址纪念公园位于唐山市岳各庄路北侧，占地40万平方米。
公园以机车车辆厂原有的铁轨为纵轴，以正在建设的纪念大道为横轴，划分为遗址区、水区、碎石广场区和树林区四个区。
为更好地保护地震遗址，为唐山市民提供一个祭奠地震罹难者的场所，唐山市决定在原唐山机车车辆厂铸钢车间地震遗址处，辟建“唐山地震遗址纪念公园”。
其中将建一座长三百多米的地震纪念墙，用以镌刻祭文和罹难者姓名。
地震罹难者纪念墙位于遗址公园东西主轴线纪念大道的北侧。
整个纪念墙长度为三百多米，由五面大理石纪念墙组成，上面镌刻24万地震罹难者名单和纪念碑文。
每面墙厚度为1.5米，平均高9米左右。
12块有字纪念墙已经被分为四组，三块为一组。
每块纪念墙的序号都用醒目的黄色大字标出，分别为一A、一B、一C，二A、二B、二C，三A、三B、三C，四A、四B、四C。
