If the droids are going to fit in, they probably need to learn the Japanese custom of serving tea. Fortunately, researchers at the University of Tokyo are exploring just that. In a show this week, a humanoid(有人特点的)with camera eyes made by Kawada Industries Inc. poured tea from a bottle into a cup. Then another robot on wheels delivered the cup of tea in an experimental room that has sensors embedded in the floor and sofa as well as cameras on the ceiling, to simulate(模仿)life with robot technology.“A human being may be faster, but you’d have to say ‘Thank you,’” said University of Tokyo profe ssor Tomomasa Sato. “That’s the best part about a robot. You don’t have to feel bad about asking it to do things.”Sato believes Japan, a rapidly aging society where more than a fifth of the population is 65 or older, will lead the world in designing robots to care for the elderly, sick and bedridden(卧床不起的).Already, monitoring technologies, such as sensors that automatically turn on lights when people enter a room, are becoming widespread in Japan. The walking, child–size Asimo from Honda Motor Co. greets people at showrooms. NEC Corp. has developed a smaller companion robot–on –wheels called Papero. A seal robot available since 2004 can entertain the elderly and others in need of fuzzy companionship.Sato says his experimental room is raising awareness about privacy questions that may arise when electronic devices monitor a person’s movements down to the smallest detail. On the bright side, the tea – pouring humanoid has been programmed to do the dishes.41. With a social worker mother, the Sutton children had inherited(继承) her commitment to service, and knew never to take their good fortune at Christmas for granted. This year, Kinzie, her seven-year-old daughter was thrilled that Santa Claus would make a special visit to a 22-year-old mother named Ashley who worked in a factory raising her 12-month-old son by herself. The phone rang on Sunday. A representative from a local organization was calling to say that the aid Ann had requested for Ashley had fallen through. No Santa Claus, no presents, nothing.Ann saw the cheer vanish from her children’s faces at the news. Without a word, Kinzie ran into her bedroom. She returned, her face set with determination. Opening up her piggy bank, she put all the coins onto the table: $3.30. Everything she had.“Mom,” she told Ann, “I know it’s not much. But maybe this will buy a present for the baby.”At a breakfast meeting the next day, Ann told her coworkers about her daughter’s story. To her surprise, staff members began to open their purses and empty their pockets to help Kinzie. By day’s end, the story of Kinzie’s gift had spread beyond Ann’s office. She received a call from an unknown donor. If a seven-year-old could give everything she had, he said, he should at least match her gift 100 to 1. He contributed $300.On Christmas Eve, Ann drove through the pouring rain to the small trailer where the Ashleys lived. Then she began to unload the gifts from the car, handing them to Ashley one by one.Ashley was very moved. Reflecting on a little girl’s generosity, Ashley says she’ll one day be able to do something similar for someone else in need. “Kinzie could have used that money for herself, but she gave it away,” Ashley says. “She’s the type of kid I’d like my son to grow up to be.”46. Your email address has been chosen by our computer. So, for no reason, we’d like to give you a million dollars. All you need to do is give us your bank account numbers. Can we interest you in some diet pills? And, by the way, I want to marry you.”I hate to let you down, but there is no “million dollars”. The diet pills don’t exist –and your future “husband” or “wife” has just proposed to a mil lion others. These and a hundred other stories have been made up to steal your personal information or money or maybe just to infect your computer with a virus. Welcome to the world of junk email.Junk email –or spam –is probably the biggest global busin ess that’s ever existed. Billions of spam emails are sent every day, making up around 80% of all email traffic. These incredible volumes of spam slow down the whole internet and cost businesses millions of dollars just trying to keep up with the next trick.Your email programme probably includes a spam filter, which sorts out the mail you do want from the junk. But it’s impossible to stop it all and if you put together the seconds it takes to see through the deception (欺诈) in each one, they add up to a significant amount of lost time dealing with the spam that does get through. But who could fall for such obvious tricks? Probably very few of us – one in a million, perhaps. But when you are sending billions of these every day, for next to no cost, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that someone is getting very rich. But who? It’s incredibly difficult to find out. Most spam is sent usinganonymous networks of infected computers, called “botnets”, some of which are made up of tens of millions of computers across dozens of countries. Maybe your own laptop is sending out marriage proposals right now. It’s enough to put you off using email again! So what can you do to defend yourself? You could set up a separate email account for online use, or maybe leave out the @ symbol when you write your email address online. An up-to-date web browser and antivirus program will help too. And of course, never open strange email, even from a friend’s account. Never click on the links. And never ever reply!51. The survey shows that the general health of middle school students is declining year by year ,which results in the increasing number of students asking for sick leave. One of the reasons could be that they spend too much time on their study with little time for physical exercise. What`s more, they don`t do labor work like housework and they don`t have a balanced diet. To solve the problem, experts advise that we students should keep a balance between study and play and that we should do sports for at least one hour a day. Besides, we`d better eat more fruits and vegetables and refuse junk foods.
The author got very fat when young, but later he tried to lose weight step and step. He kept on trying hard and even joined in the city marathon. At last with perseverance he achieved success.
Having read the passage, i was deeply touched and admired the author for his insistence. If he had not been so determined and persistent, he would not have lost so much weight and lived an exciting life. His story shows that if one sets his mind to something and stick to it, nothing is impossible.
It reminds me of a similar experience. One day it was announced that there would be a rope--skipping competition in our class. On hearing the announcement, i felt nervous because i had nerve done rope skipping before. Bit my sister, who promised to teach me, persuaded me to have a try. At the beginning i found it hard to learn to skip because my feet always blocked the rope. However, i didn`t lose heart but changed my way of learning. Gradually i could skip faster and faster. Thanks to my sister`s help and my perseverance, i took part in the competition confidently, in which i skipped 155 times and ranked fifth.
From the author and my own experience, i conclude that perseverance is vital to success. So don`t give up whenever you are faced with difficulty. Keep on trying and you will succeed.。
