On the afternoon 14:28 of May 12, 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Sichuan Province. The damage was great and a great number of people were affected by the earthquake.The number of people who died in the earthquake reached 69,000, with many more buried and injured. Nearly 2,000 of the dead were students and teachers who were trapped in schools that fell down. Fortunately, the rescue workers had dug out more than 5500 earthquake survivors from the ruins. Elsewhere more than 50000 people had been rescued from Wenchuan and shelters had been put up for the homeless. (BBC news).
