The USA --American Beginning
Preface
Hello Class! In today's class we are going to deal with the first chapter on the history of the United States of America. As is known to all, America is a new nation and the product of the Western civilization. In fact, the American continent was first discovered by an Italian sailor called Christopher Columbus in 1492. And the United States was not officially founded until 1776 when 13 former British colonies rose up against the British Empire and fought a war for their independence. But, before we start, let's take the time to preview some of the questions regarding the history of the United States. Please see if you can answer the following questions. Please supply the correct answers, if you happen to know them, in the space bellow.

Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody going today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.)

你们今天都好吗?(掌声)蒂姆·斯帕塞好吗?(掌声)I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.

It’s awful hot today, isn’t it?S: You can say that again!D: Let’s go kayaking later.S: Are you kidding? I can’t even swim.D: So what? You’ll be safe with a life jacket and a helmet on.S: What if the kayak capsizes?D: I’ll teach you to “Eskimo roll. 〞S: What’s that?D: Well, it’s a special technique we use to get the kayak upright when it overturns.S: I don’t know … it sounds pretty dangerous.D: Come on. Don’t worry. Only the good die young.S: What do you mean by that?D: Just kidding. Let’s go, OK?S: OK. Anyway, if only the good die young, we’ll both probably live to be a hundred.Lesson 93One good turn deserves anotherReadingOne good turn deserver another. That’s the lesson five store clerks learned recently.Every day a strange old man came to their supermarket to buy groceries. “Once he came in wearing only one shoe,〞recalled one of the clerks. And although he grumbled a lot and they often had to stand there listening to him, he was a nice old man. The clerks befriended him and even helped him carry his groceries. One day when he fell ill with cancer, they even visited him in the hospital. The old man turned out to be a retired doctor. And, of course, when he died, he didn’t die a pauper. He leftUS$70,000 in his will to thank them for their kindness. As poor as a church mouseDialogAnna and Eric are talking about the previous lesson.(E=Eric; A=Anna)E: Wow! Those store clerks really got lucky.A: You can say that again. Some people are born lucky.E: There must be thousands of old men just like that doctor, I bet.A: That’s probably true. And they must be wanting to draw up a will to give their money away, too. So the next time you meet a lonely old man, you’d better treat him right.E: Come on! What kind of person do you think I am?A: Don’t get son mad! I’m just kidding! Besides, you might not be so lucky and come across my old uncle, Jake.E: What do you mean?A: He’s as poor as a church mouse! The poor man’s cure-allReading:Having one of the world’s largest garlic crops, Gilroy, California is known as the “garlic capital of the world.〞On a lot summer day, a pungent odor rises from this farming town which can be smelled miles away. All you have to do is roll down the window of your car and you know you’re in Gilroy.Believing that garlic helps the body fight many forms of diseases, people add garlic to their cooking in many parts of the world. Moreover, it’s popularly used as the poor man’s cure-all. During the First World War it was used as an antiseptic. And in the Second World War it was known as “Russian penicillin.〞Nowadays, thinking that it kills bacteria, some people eat raw garlic as if it were candy.Lesson 96What’s the point of chewing gum?DialogBeing an American, Donna wants to learn more about the Chinese. She’s talking to her Chinese friend, Jeff. (D=Donna; J=Jeff)D: Hi, Jeff! What’s up?J: Nothing much, what about you?D: Same as usual. Here, have a stick of gum.J: No, thanks, I’ll stick to my own brand.D: And what brand’s that?J: Actually it’s not gum. I eat raw garlic instead. Want a piece?D: No way! So that’s where the stinky smell is coming from.J: Hey! Watch your tongue, OK? Garlic kills germs. It’s good for you. D: Says who?J: well, according to …D: Never mind. Please stop talking. Your breath stinks. I’m out of here. J: Boy! These Americans don’t know what’s good for them. Besides, what’s the point of chewing gum anyway?Lesson 97The Bronze AgeReading:While on an expedition in western china twenty years ago, some explorers discovered the mummies of a tall, red-haired people. Though estimated to be nearly 4,000 years old, the corpses were quite well preserved. Scientists are excited because these mummies are a link between the East and the West. What were redheads doing in China and who were they?Though the answers to these questions may never be answered with certainty, these mummies provide new information about the Bronze Age, when men used tools and weapons made of bronze, this was the period between the Stone Age and the Iron Age. As the explorers continue their work, new mysteries are waiting to be discovered.Lesson 98Speaking from the GraveDialog:Two students, Beth and Carl, are talking about the red-haired mummies. (B=Beth; C=Carl)B: Can you imagine what it was like 4,000 years age?C: That’s hard to imagine. But if the mummies could speak, they could certainly tell us a great deal,B: Well, that, of course, is impossible. But scientists can tell a lot from the things the explorers found.C: I know. For example, they think the 4000-year-old mummies welts。

Speech at Welcoming banquetRonald ReaganApril 27, 1984Since we arrived the graciousness with which we have been received has been truly heartwarming. A Chinese proverb best describes my feeling: when the visitor arrives, it is as if returning home.Having already known Premier Zhao, one of the purposes of my visit was to make new friends. But I find that instead of making friends, I am among friends.Mr. Premier, your memorable visit to the United States permitted you to judge for yourself the intentions of the American people. I hope the good will you experienced, just as I have enjoyed from your people, confirmed to you that our citizens want our countries to work in harmony. The American and Chinese Government have responded to that wish in a series of formal communiqués which set forth the fundamental principles of our relationship: the 1972 Shanghai communiqués; the January 1, 1979 communiqué establishing diplomatic relations; and, the August 17, 1982 communiqué negotiated by my administration.Mr. Premier, by any accounting, the cooperation between China and the United States already has been a boon to our people. We have both gained. In the last few years, two-way trade has taken off. There has been a veritable explosion of student, science, business, and tourist exchanges between our peoples. Joint business ventures, which profit all concerned, are multiplying. We would be less than candid if we minimized the significance of the benefits we each receive from our good relations. Standing together, we expand the trade and commercial ties that increase the quality of life in both countries. Standing together, we can further peace and security. Great nations, if adversaries, cannot draw from each others’ strengths. The commitment to stand as friends has been made. The promise is solid. The challenges that remain, however, will take both patience and mutual understanding. I have suggested, and with your permission, say again this evening: let us use as our guide the principle of mutual respect, mutual benefit. This principle has within it both dignity and fairness.Another source from which to draw is our knowledge of each other, a well of familiarity which increases in depth with every passing day.We are each working hard to learn more about the delicate and detailed workings of the other’s system—ours with its complex legal procedures based on the separation of powers, and yours with its own intricate patterns. Insights into why and how decisions are made can help both us appreciate our agreements and accept in good faith our disagreements. For what we see, Premier Zhao, my countrymen are enthused by what is happening in China. Y our modernization program, an ambitious undertaking, makes our future relationship even more promising. Y ou are striving to quadruple your production by the year 2 000. The eyes of the world are watching as you progress on this peaceful and productive course. The American people wish you success and offer you our cooperation in this great endeavor.Americans, more than others, admire those who set great goals and strive to improve their lot. When that first American merchant ship set sail for China 200 years ago, our forefathers were citizens of a weak republic living in an unexplored and undeveloped land. We Americans are proud of our accomplishments in these last 200 years, just as you are rightfully proud of theenormous contributions Chinese civilization has made to mankind. As China moves forward to modernize and develop its economy, the United States is eager to join in a cooperative effort to share the American capabilities that helped turn our country from a vast wilderness into an industrial giant. Those American capabilities flow from the creative enterprise our society encourages. Our progress is based on what we have found to work. If it did not work, the American people, who are pragmatic by nature, would likely have abandoned it long ago.China today, I understand, is taking its own practical approach. By increasing incentives and decentralizing decision making, you are promoting innovation, creativity, and a better ability to adapt to local conditions. The responsibility system in agriculture has spurred increases in food production throughout China. And the Special Economic Zones are providing dramatic examples of how incentives can raise productivity and offer bountiful opportunities for a better life.In your drive for modernization, you have our best wishes. If you ask our advice, we can only answer with truth as we see it. But let me assure you that we want you to succeed. Having one billion people—nearly a quarter of mankind healthy, well-fed, clothed and housed, educated and given the opportunity for a higher standard of living--- is in the interest of good and decent people everywhere. It is certainly in the interest of the American people, who wish to trade and be friends with the Chinese people.Premier Zhao, as we are all aware, our cooperation is based on more than simply the desire to improve our economies. Today the peace of the world is threatened by a major power that is focusing its resources and energies not on economic progress but, instead, on military power. The shift in military might of the last decade has made trust and friendship between us ever more vital. I know it is your desire, and that of the United States as well, that peace be preserved. We seek to better the quality of life of our people and that can be done only in a peaceful environment. War is the great destroyer of all the hopes of mankind. To preserve the peace and protect our own sovereignty and independence, we stand together in opposing expansionism and hegemony. Both of us seek to promote peace and reconciliation through dialogue between South and North on the Korean peninsula. Both of us seek the early independence of Namibia and an end to outside interference in the affairs of southern Africa. Although our prescriptions for getting there are quite different, we share a common desire for a resolution of the turmoil in the Middle East and Central America. Both of us seek an end to the use of chemical weapons, and agree on the necessity of reducing nuclear arms.A strong China dedicated to peace, clearly, is in the best interest of international stability and in the best interest of the United States. A robust and enduring friendship will bolster the security of both of our countries without compromising the independence of either. It will be the trust between us that will keep us and the world at peace. In this, let us be of the same kind. And as a saying from The Book of Changes goes, “If two people are of the same kind, their sharpness can cut through metal.”It is the hope and prayer of the American people that someday there will no longer be a need for our Nation to use any of its resources to produce weapons of any kind. The Chinese and American people are now showing the world, by our example, that there is a better way than hatred and violence. Many of us in this room have seen much history in our lifetimes. My own lifetime spans one third of the history of the American Republic. Over the many years that God has permitted me tolive, I have observed the changing nature of the relationship between our two countries. At times, our feelings toward each other were hostile and negative. Today we have the opportunity to keep our countries on a path of genuine good will that will reap rewards for generations to come. Let us not shy from the task. It will not be easy. Y et, let us move forward so that some day when the young people of our countries reach a ripe old age, they will look back and there will be no memory of a time when there was anything else but friendship and good feelings between the Chinese and American people. That is a gift we can give to them.。

American Accent Training 1

American Accent Training 1

AMERICAN ACCENT TRAININGGeneral PronunciationShift your voice position: Pinch your nose and say ✌. You should feel a high vibration in your nasal passages, as well as in your fingers. Now, continue holding your nose, and completely relax your throat---allow an Ah sound to flow from deep in your chest. There should be no vibration in your nose at all. Go back and forth several times. Next we practice flowing from one position to the other, so you can feel exactly when it changes from a nasal sound to a deep ☯sound.Nose Throat Chest✌→✌→ → →☯→☯1.Mmmmm soundLet’s start with the mmmmm sound. It’s super easy to do. All you do is to put your lips together and hum. You’ll notice a couple of thing s here. Put your hand on your throat and say mmmm, and observe that you can feel a vibration in your fingertips. This means that the M sound is spoken and not whispered.2.Ah: in a deep voice, say the following out aloud. We’re adding two more consonantsat the lip position. P&B.1.mah2.mah-mah3.pah4.pah-pah5.bah6.bah-bah3.Repeat these syllables. Pay attention to the boldface. To get the physical experienceof intonation, you can stretch your rubber band.1. MAH-mah2.mah-MAH3.PAH-pah4.pah-PAH5.BAH-bah6.bah-BAH4. Using the AH sound, repeat the following sounds. Don’t worry about what it means, just repeat the sounds in a deep, confident voice.1. b bl s diz j b2.sk t t d☯ l t3.d n b d☯ b ik5. Four important sounds.☯:Uh. Don’t move your lips or tongue, just let a completely neutral sound come out—uhhhh. It’s the sound Americans use when they’re thinking ---um,uh-----. Read the following sounds aloud.but chuck done fun gun hut jump come luck much none putt rub such shut tub the vug was young zug:Ah. First say Uh, then drop your jaw and say AHHH. This Ah sound is used for theletter O in one-syllable words: hot lost cop. And with the O in stressed syllables: possible hospital college. Read the following Ah sound:Bob chop Don fawn gone hot jaw call law Mom not pot raw saw shawl tall thought Von walk yawn✌: Now say Ah again, but put your lips back a bit. This gives you the ✌ sound, used for the letter a in one-syllable words: ch a nce l a ugh d a nce, and in stressed syllables: pl a stic fant a stic im a ginable. Read the following words:Bat chat Dad fat gap had Jack cat laugh mad pat ran sat zap : similar to Chinese”饿” Read the following sounds:Book foot good hood could look nook put rook should took wouldStaircase intonation:In saying your words, imagine that they come out as if they were bounding lightly down a flight of stairs. Every so often, one jumps to another level and then starts down again. Start a new staircase when you want to emphasize that information, generally a noun.eg:B biz z n the founExersise:Duh duh duh Duh duh duh Duh duh duh Duh duh duhLa la la La la la La la la La la laMee mee mee Mee mee mee Mee mee mee Mee mee meeHo ho ho Ho ho ho Ho ho ho Ho ho hoA B C impre cise con di tion al phabet123 a hot dog a hot dog hot dog standDogs eat bones they eat bones they eat them give me oneEvery time we want to stress a word or an idea, we just start a new staircase. That sounds simple enough, but when and where do you start a new staircase?Intonation or pitch change is primarily used to introduce new information. This means that when you are making a statement for the first time, you will stress the nouns1. Dogs eat bones. 8. Nelly teaches French.2. Mike likes bikes. 9. Ben writes articles.3. Elsa wants a book. 10. Jerry makes music.4. Adam plays pool. 11. Bill and I fix the bikes.5. Bobby needs some money. 12. Ann and Ed call the kids.6. Susie combs her hair. 13 The girls have a choice..7. John lives in France. 14. The boys need some money.Statement intonation with PROUNSWhen you replace the nouns with pronouns(i.e., old information), stress the verb. They eat themAs we have seen, nouns are new information; pronouns are old information.1. Bob sees Betty. 1. He sees her.2. Ann and Ed call the kids. 2. They call them.3. Jan sells some apples. 3. She sells some.4. Bill and I fix the bikes. 4. We fix them.5. Ellen should call her sister. 5. She should call someone.Four reasons for Intonation1.New informationIt sounds like rain.Rain is the new information. It’s the most important word in that sentenceConvey the information that it really does sound as if rain is falling.2.OpinionIt sounds like rain, but I don’t think it is.Convey the opinion that although it has the sound of rain, it may be something else.In this case, intonation makes the meaning the opposite of what the words say.3. ContrastHe likes rain, but he hates snow.Convey the different feelings that someone has about rain and snow.Like and hate are contrasted and are the stronger words in the sentence.4. Can’tIt can’t rain when there are no clouds.Convey the fact that rain is an impossibility right now.Contractions(shouldn’t and wouldn’t) and negatives(no,not, never) are important words since they totally negate the meaning of a sentence, but they are not usually stressed. Can’t is an exception.Practice:1.I didn’t say he stole the money. Someone else said it.2.I didn’t say he stole the money. That’s not true at all.3.I didn’t say he stole the money. I only suggested the possibility.4.I didn’t say he stole the money. I think someone else took it.5.I didn’t say he stole the money. Maybe he just borrowed it.6.I didn’t say he stole the money, but rather some other money.7.I didn’t say he stole the money. He may have taken some jewelry.Application of stress:Hello, my name is_______. I’m taking American Accent Training. There’s a lot to learn, but I hope to make it as enjoyable as possible. I should pick up the American intonation pattern pretty easily, although the only way to get it is to practice all of the time. I use up and down, or peaks and valleys intonation more than I used to. I’ve been paying attention to pitch, too. It’s like walking down a staircase. I’ve been talking to a lot of Americans lately, and they tell me that I’m easier to understand. Anyway, I could go on and on, but the important thing is to listen well and sound good. Well, what do you think? Do I? Clench your teeth!Shoulders back, chin up!Deepen your voice, and project it out!。

Philip and I were living with Grandma and Grandpa. Philip was a young doctor, and he kept talking about having a house of our own. It's natural. M: What did you do?E: We looked at a lot of houses.M: Did you find one?E: Oh, not at first. We couldn't afford it. Grandpa wanted to lend us the money to buy one, but Philip is too independent. He didn't want to borrow any money.M: Sounds like Richard.E: They're all alike. Richard is a real Stewart. He's independent, and sometimes just stubborn.M: When did you buy a house?E: After Richard was born. I was teaching music, and Philip was opening his first medical office. M: Where was the house?E: Right here in Riverdale. Of course, it was a small house, but just right for us.M: It's funny. History repeats itself. Now Richard and I are having a baby, and we probably won't be able to afford a house right away, either.E: Why don't you look at some houses, Marilyn?M: Good ideaE: Look in the real-estate section of Sunday's Times. You'll learn a lot.M: Maybe we should speak to a real-estate agent about a house.E: And a bank about a mortgage.M: I'll talk to Richard about it. I think it's a good idea, Ellen. We can learn a lot by asking.E: And if I can be of any help, let me know. As a matter of fact, my friend Virginia Martinelli is a real-estate agent.M: Good.E: You won't believe this, but she sold us our first house and this one.M: Well, I'll tell Richard, and we'll go to see her. Do you think the skirt length is right, Ellen? Do you think it's too long?E: I think the skirt is just right. Are you planning to attach a train to it?M: No. No train. Just the dress. But I am going to make a headpiece of lace.E: That dress is gorgeous.M: Thanks, Ellen. And thanks for the advice about the house. I'll talk to Richard about it the minute he comes home.E: And remember, we love having you here. There's no need to rush.ACT IIV: I remember your parents' first house very well. It was on Spring Avenue, near the park.R: I grew up in that house.V: Yes, and you were such a cute baby.M: I've seen pictures of him. He had blond hair.V: I've been friendly with the Stewart family for a long time, so it's my pleasure to help you find a house now.R: Well, we're not sure we can afford one.M: But we'd like to find out about the possibilities.V: That's a good idea. I love your house on Linden Street. I sold your father that house seventeen years ago.M: Really?R: Yes, Mom was pregnant with Robbie then, and they needed the extra room.V: I hear you're expecting a baby, Mrs. Stewart.M: Mmm-hmm. So we will be needing more room.V: Oh, so you don't need something immediately?R: No. But in five or six months ...M: And time passes so quickly.V: Yes, it does. Well, when you called, you gave me enough information about your salaries and your savings. So I have a good idea about your financial situation. Let me show you some pictures of houses. M: With two bedrooms?V: Yes, I think I can show you some. Of course, they won't be in Riverdale. The cost of housing's too high for you here.R: I haven't thought about living anywhere else. We've always lived in this area.M: Where should we look for a house, Mrs. Martinelli?V: Well, we have an office in Mount Kisco. It's a lovely area, and it's only about an hour's drive from here. Here. I have a book with photos of some homes in that area. Now, let's see. Here. This is a lovely two-bedroom house in your price range.M: It's pretty, but I prefer a two-story home.R: I do, too. I don't care for a ranch type.V: OK. Oh, this is a wonderful house. I know it well. I sold it to the present owners.M: It looks wonderful.V: This is a two-bedroom, two-bath house. It has a full basement, and it is on a half-acre lot. You can probably afford this one.M: I like this house.R: So do I.V: And the price is right. Would you like to go see it?R: Yes. We're planning to talk to someone at the bank next week Perhaps we could see the house this weekend.V: If someone doesn't buy it before then, But let's keep looking. Just to get an idea of some other possibilities.R: This is very helpful, Mrs. Martinelli.V: Here. This is a wonderful example of Spanish-style architectureR: Oh, I love the roof tiles on a Spanish-style house.M: It looks like the houses in Hollywood.V: It's interesting. A house like this in Riverdale costs double the price. Oh my! Here's a real buy. It's a bargain. This house just came on the market.M: It's quite lovely. Is it a two-bedroom house?V: No. It has three bedrooms and three baths. I know the house. It has a brand new kitchen. And a living room with a twelve-foot ceiling. And there's a two-car garage.R: Then why don't we go look at this house, too?V: It's a good investment.R: Thank you, Mrs. Martinelli.M: Thanks so much.V: My pleasure. Give my best to your parents. Your father's a wonderful doctor, Richard. He took care of my daughter when she was a child. He's the best pediatrician in Westchester.R: Thanks, Mrs. Martinelli. I'll give them your regards.M: We really appreciate your advice.V: I do think you should go see the houses and talk to the bank. Here. Let me give you some information sheets about the houses. They're both very good buys.R: Well, thanks so much for your help and your time, Mrs. Martinelli. We've got a lot to talk about. E: Mmm-hmm. Thanks.ACT IIIB: How do you do?R: Hello.B: I'm Ralph Riley.R: I'm Richard Stewart, and this is my wife, Marilyn.B: Pleased to meet you.M: Likewise, Mr. Riley.B: Please, sit down. What can I do for you?R: We'd like to discuss a mortgage.M: For a house.B: Fine. Are you buying a house or are you refinancing your present home?R: We're planning to buy a house.M: And we'd like to find out about a mortgage.R: We are customers of the bank. As a matter of fact, my whole family banks here.B: I have some questions to ask. Do you own your house or do you rent?R: Neither. We live with my parents, Dr. and Mrs. Philip Stewart.B: And how old are you?M: I'm twenty-nine.R: I'm thirty.B: And, Mr. Stewart, what is your occupation?R: I'm a freelance photographer.B: And, Mrs. Stewart, are you working?M: Yes. I'm a designer, and I work in a boutique.B: Did you bring any savings or salary information? Last year's tax forms?R: Yes. Here they are.B: OK. What ... what kind of house did you have in mind?R: We're talking about buying a two-bedroom house in Mount Kisco. Here are the financial details on the house.B: Thank you. Are you prepared to make a ten-percent down payment?R: Yes, we are.B: Payments over thirty years?R: Yes.M: Do you think we can get a loan?B: Well, it depends. Do you own any other property? Any stocks or bonds?R: No.B: I see. Then you don't have any collateral. Perhaps you could get a guarantor-- someone to sign for the loan for you.R: Why is that necessary?B: Since you don't have enough income, and you don't already own any property, the bank needs to be sure you can pay the mortgage every month. A guarantor is responsible for the loan if you can't make the payments.R: I see. Well, the idea of buying a house is exciting.M: Thank you, Mr. Riley. We'll read this over carefully.B: Thank you.R: Good-bye. Thanks.B: Good-bye. And hope to see you soon.R: I hope so, too.B: Take care.M: Good-bye.R: It all sounded so easy until they mentioned needing collateral or a guarantor.M: We have no collateral.R: And I don't think it's a good idea to ask Dad to sign as a guarantor. I don't feel right about it.M: I understand your feelings about it, Richard.E: Now, tell me, what's the problem?M: We can get a loan from the bank if we can put up some collateral.R: And we don't own anything to use as collateral.M: Or someone can sign with us as a guarantor.E: Why don't you speak to Dad?R: No. If we buy a house, I want to be able to handle it alone.E: Everybody needs help sometimes, Richard.M: I understand Richard's feelings about it, Ellen.R: In two or three months, I'll have an advance on my bookand be able to put more money down. M: What about the house in Mount Kisco? Somebody else'll buy it by then.R: Then there'll be other houses, Marilyn.E: Richard has a point. You're just beginning to look.M: We're in no great rush. It's true.R: This has been a great learning experience for us, Marilyn. Talking to the real-estate agent. Looking at the houses. Talking to the loan officer at the bank.M: It has been a learning experience. That's true.E: I think you're doing the right thing. Taking your time. Looking around. Especially with a purchase of this kind. You're talking about a lot of money.M: We'll call Mrs. Martinelli and tell her to keep looking for us.R: And I'll call Mr. Riley at the bank and tell him we'll see him in a couple of months.E: And if you ever need Dad or me to help you ...M: We know.E: You know we'll be there for you.R: It's a Stewart tradition. We're a family.。

LTAlexandra: Oh, she's very pretty. 1. Would you like some coffee?Would you like...

Would you like some coffee?"在谈到自己的书Family Album, U.S.A. Would you like to see them?" Yes. I'd like that." 或者"Yes. Please."2. Here they are.

单数时用Here it is.3. Thanks.

所以无论是人家说你的英语好--"Your English is very good.",还是称赞你的夫人很漂亮--"Oh, she's very pretty.",都不必不好意思,只要说声"Thank you" 就可以了。

They intrude unnecessarily and often hurtfully into people’s privacy; and they publish inaccurate, sometimes made-up stories. The victims have little redress. If they are rich and the article is defamatory, they can sue for libel. Most cannot afford to do so, and even the rich cannot prevent an invasion of their privacy. Fierce competition, particularly between tabloid newspapers, leads to more feet in more doors.

有点像电脑的发音“Hi” “How –are- you? 因此,学习连读是非常重要的,可以让你的读音听起来平滑—连读自然、平滑让人听起来感到有趣。

我们来学习第一个连读规则。

当一个单词以辅音结尾,跟在后面的单词以元音开头的话,我们把这些单词连读,最后一个辅音和开头的元音连读。

我们来看看是如何连读的。

这里有三个句子。

先看第一个“In an instant”。

我们不能说“ In an instant”。

I. ninstant..inan instant.

我们有一个“and ‘,后面跟着“ I “,因此我们不说John is ,而是要连读,要说“Johnis”。

这里的“ Johnis”,字母s 跟一个元音的情况,我们说isa,听一下johnisa,不要说“ John is a “,而是“ Johnisa”。

John is a friend of mine.

I'm an actor.

i am an actor.

因此,我们说Iman,再读一遍,an与a连读,我们不说an actor,而是“a nactor a nactor ..再读一遍,ima nactor,再来ima nactor.关于连读,有三个重要的地方,你要知道的。

第一,连读不意味着语速快。

我的很多学生开始接触连读的时候,都以为要读得很快。

Im an actor. johnisafriend of mine

John is a friend of mine. Johni sa friendof mine. I’ll call you in an instant.

called up听起来像“calledup”,for a while听起来像“ forawhile,“where is”听起来像“whereis” 我还能再说一个吗?“what if”,我们来看这个,字母“t”夹在两个元音之间,读音变成了短促的“d”音,所以,我们连读时,不说what if,而“whatif” ”whatif”,要记得“t”在两个元音间时,发音变成了“d”,尽管“t”是单词的最后一个字母,下一个单词的首字母是元音时,也是发“d”音。

我们来练习几个句子吧,我们不说“hold on a minute”,我们是怎样说的呢?“holdon a minute” “holdon a minute” 我们不说“a cup of coffee”,我们说“acupof coffee” “give me acupof coffee”,我们不说“just a moment”,而是“justa moment”。

再来练习几个句子“it felt in need for awhile” “it feltin need for awhile” “where is his uncle” “whereis his uncle” “does everybodyhere work out?” “doeseverybody here workout?” , “can I think it over?” “canIthink itover ?” “why did Adam bring it up again?” “why didAdam bring itup again?”

第一条规则,我们有“s” “likes”,当两个辅音都是“s”时,我们只发一个辅音“likes swimming”,我们不说“he like’s swimming”,而是把两个合到了一起发音,我们可以去掉第一个“s”,直接发第2个“s”的音,我们说“he likeswimming” “he likeswimming”。

我们说“Bill” “who likes swimming?” “Billlikesswimming”。

我们说“stopracticing”,再说一遍“I’m gonna stopracticing”,再举一个例子,“t” “next time”,我们把这两个单词连读成“nextime”,再来一次“ I’ll see you nextime”,只发了一个“t”的音。

再来看带“sh”的单词连读“wish she”,“I wish she would” how would that sound link ? “ I wishshe would” “I wishshe woul call me”。

“I had a badday yesterday”。

“n” “nine nails” 连起来读“ninenails”。

“b” “Bob Barker” “His name is Bobbarker” “His name is Bobbarker” “v” “love vegetables” “ I lovevegetables”。

再来一个“g” “going great” “goinggreat” “everything is goinggreat” 。

看这个例子“used to”,“d”和“t”读音非常相近,我们不说“ I used to” “ I used to”,而是说“I use to” “I use to work” “ I use to smoke”,实际上,听起来真的不是“d”的音,有时美国人如果是写得快,就会犯拼写上的错误,他们会写成“use to”,没有“d”,因为他们不喜欢听到这个音。

我们来看另一个例子“five friends”,看我的舌头“vv ff”,相同的发音点,因此,我们不会说“ I have five friends”,而是连到一起发音,“ ihavefive friends”,“v”和“f”的唯一不同点是“v”发声的,“f”是不发声的,不然,嘴唇的动作是一样的,跟我念,“ihavefive friends”,再来举一个例子,“big kitchen”,“g” and “k”有着相同的发音点,我们来试一下“ guhguhguh” “kuhkuhkuh”,你舌头的动作是一样的,因为我们不说“ I have a big kitchen”,而是连起来读“ I havea bigkitchen”。

再举几个例子,“suppose to”,我们不说“supposed to”,而是“ suppose to”,再举一个“need to”,我们不说“ I need to go”,而是“ I needto go”。
