A导学号 49152543 This is not a typical summer camp. Michelle Pawlaw and eight other teenage girls are participating in the three-day camp offered by the Arlington County Fire Department located just outside Washington. Firefighter Clare Burley is in charge of the program, who said the purpose is to try to get young women interested in considering the fire service as a career. The free-of-charge,overnight camp is designed to let the girls experience what firefighters do to protect the community. That includes some rigorous activities such as moving a fire victim. “I didn't think I could pull that 170 pound body with a friend, but I was actually able to do it.” she said. They take classes and learn how to climb the ladder on a fire truck, operate emergency tools and rescue an injured person. They also do their share of cleaning the firehouse and the equipment.“Every week witho ut fail on a Saturday, the job is to wash all the equipment. And we wanted the girls to see this is what we do.This is a typical day in a firehouse,” she said.Firefighting is still a male-dominated service, but Burley says with 22 women on its force of 320 the Arlington County Fire Department is above the national average of 4.5 percent. She joined the department seven years ago.“We do everything that the guys do to the same standard. We are tested to the same standard. We are expected to operate at the s ame standard, ”she said. Most of the girls say they had never thought about becoming a firefighter, but the camp was a great learning experience.“I think it is definitely not a job that only men can do. Women can do it just as well as men can,”said Michelle Pawlaw.文章大意:这是一个类似于夏令营的活动,参加者是九名年轻的女性,活动的内容是体验消防工作。

AThe Yaos (瑶族人) live in mountain communities scattered over 130 counties in five southern China provinces and one autonomous region. About 70 percent of them live in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the rest live in Hunan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces.Half of the Yaos speak the Yao language, which belongs to the Chinese-Tibetan language family; others use the Miao or Dong languages. As a result of close contact with the Han and Zhuang cultures, many Yaos also have learned to speak Chinese or Zhuang. Before 1949, the Yaos did not have a written language. Ancient Yaos kept records of important affairs by carving notches(凹口) on wood or bamboo slips. Later they used Chinese characters. Hand-written copies of words of songs are on display in the Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County in Guangxi. They are believed to be relics of the Ming Dynasty. Ancient stone tablets engraved(雕刻) with Chinese characters can be found in a lot of Yao communities.During the Ming and Qing dynasties, cattle and iron tools spread among the Yaos in Guangxi and Guangdong. They dug ditches and built troughs(水槽) to draw water from springs for daily use and irrigation.Sideline occupations (副业) such as hunting, collecting medicinal herbs, making charcoal (木炭) and weaving were pursued side by side with agriculture. The Yaos practiced an interesting form of cooperation called “singing-while-digging”. This can still be seen in Guangxi today. At times of spring ploughing,20 to 30 households(住户) work together for one household after another until all their fields are ploughed and sown. While the group is working, a young man stands out in the fields, beating a drum and leading the singing. Everyone sings after him.1.Where do most Yaos live now?A. In Hunan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces.B. In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.C. In the southwestern part of China.D. In nearly all the provinces across China.答案:B细节理解题。

APut yourself in these tourists’ position. You are walking an icy mountain path in the Alps in Europe. Suddenly you spot a body on the ground, face downward and stuck to the ice. You think someone may have been murdered or in a fatal accident. So you rush back and call the police. The police, however, quickly realize that this body is different from others they’ve found on the mountain. For one thing, it is mostly undamaged. For another, its skin is dried out, like a mummy’s (木乃伊). And there is an old small stone knife beside the body. The body turned out to be much older than the tourists could have guessed. When specialists had a chance to examine it, they discovered it had been there for about five thousand years! How could a body stay preserved for all this time? Two things probably helped. First, the place where the man died was somewhat sheltered, so animals couldn’t get at it. Then he was quickly covered by falling snow. Wind blowing through the snow probably “freeze -dried” his body, removing all moisture(水分) from it.Objects found with the body told s omething about the Iceman’s life. He wore a well-made fur jacket and trousers. He clearly had been hunting, because he学校 班级 姓名 考号得分请 勿 在 密 封 线 内 答 题carried arrows, and animal bones were nearby. He also had a grass cushion for sitting or sleeping on. Perhaps he was tired when he lay down for the last time. The body was found in 1991, when some of the ice on the mountain melted. Searching for the cause of the Iceman’s death, scientists put the body back into cold conditions---and hoped.21. Electricity is in short supply in the Middle Eastern Nation of Afghanistan. Only 6 percent of the country’s residents have electric power, according to the Asian Development Bank, an organization that works to reduce poverty. Some residents in Kabul received only 3 hours of electricity a day last fall. Others received none. Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan. “It’s dark everywhere,” says city resident Gul Hussein. “Some of our neighbours are using candles.”Experts say water shortage is partly to blame. Water is used to make electricity. In Kabul, power becomes rare in midsummer, when the region’shydroelectric(水力发电的) dams dry up. Hydroelectricity is made by the force of falling water.Kabul’s growing population is also a cause. Since the late 1990s, the city’s population has jumped from less than 1 million to more than 4 million people. Now even more electricity is needed.Despite receiving millions of dollars in international aid, the country’s electricity shortages continue. Still, Afghans hope for a solution. One plan is to import, or bring in, power from the nearby country Uzbekistan. Afghan officials also spoke with U.S. president about the nation’s need to make its own electricity.“Life takes power,” says Jan Agha, a worker from Kabul. “If you have electricity, lif e is good; but if there’s no electricity, you go around like a blind man.”25.One reason for electricity shortage is _________A. the lack of international aidB. the shortage of hydroelectric damsC. the increase of populationD. the low temperature in midsummer26. Which of the following will probably a solution for the problem of electricity shortage?A. To build more hydroelectric dams.B. To advise people to use less electricity.C. To buy electricity from America.D. To produce electricity on its own.27. Which one should be the best title for the passage?A. Water Shortage in AfghanistanB. Population Lead to Lack of ElectricityC. Electricity Shortage in AfghanistanD. Help Needed in AfghanistanCDefinition of HappinessA proverb from ancient China was widely spread in the West: “If you want to be happy for a few hours, go to get drunk; if you want the happiness to last threeyears, get married; if you want lifetime happiness, take up gardening.” The reason for the last is this: Gardening is not only useful, but it helps you to identify(与……一致) yourself with nature, and thus brings you new joy each day besides improving your health.A research of a US university that I’ve read gives a definition of happinessas what makes a person feel comfortably pleased. To put it specially, happiness is an active state of mind where one thinks one’s life is meaningful, satisfactory and comfortable. This should be something lasting rather than transitory (短暂的).Lots of people regard it the happiest to be at leisure (空闲). But according toa study, it is not a person with plenty of leisure but one at work that feels happy, especially those busy with work having little time for leisure. Happiness does not mean gains one is after but a desire to harvest what one is seeking for. People often do not treasure what they already have but desire what theycannot get. That is somewhat like a man with fond dreams of numerous lovers while unwilling to settle down with the woman beside him.Happiness is a game balancing between two ends — what one has and whatone wishes for, i.e. one’s dream and the possibility to realize it. The stud y comes to this conclusion: A happy man is one who aims high but never forgets his actual situation; one who meets challenges that develop his ability and potentiality; one who’s proud of his achievements and the recognition given to him. He has self-respect and self-confidence; treasures his own identity and loves freedom. He is sociable(好交际的) and enjoys wide range communication with others; he’s helpful and ready to accept assistance. He knows he is able to bear sufferings and failures; he is sensible enough to get fun from daily work. He is a man capable of love and passion.28. According to the passage, gardening can bring lifetime happiness because _______.A. it is a business that brings moneyB. it can strengthen gardeners’ ability to remake natureC. it can make gardeners enjoy very happy marriage考号得分密 封 线 内 答 题D. gardeners can build good relationship with nature29. It can be concluded from the research of the university that most people feelhappy when ______________________.A. they are at leisureB. they are engaged in workingC. they are gardeningD. they have numerous lovers30. The writer mentioned a man with fond dreams of numerous lovers in order to _____.A. give an example of a person who doesn’t value what he already ownsB. show that this kind of person has plenty of leisure time to do what he wantsC. make it clear that only this kind of person can enjoy happinessD. show the serious problem in marriage in modern society第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AEach new school year brings fresh reminders of what cators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight. Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar. Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than three thousand such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states. But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paulv on Hippel said, “Year-round schools don't really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governmentsoffer programs that can help. But calling them “summer school” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to the belief about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcome other terms like “summer camp”,“enrichment”,“extra time”and “hands-on learning”.1.According to the first paragraph the summer learning gap ________.A.helps children to gain weightB.leads children to work harderC.improves children's memoriesD.affects children's regular study答案:D推理判断题。

Migrants (移民) to the UK are to be tested about their English skills before being able to ask for income-related benefits (福利),the government has announced. In a move to make the benefit system reasonable, people will also be asked what efforts they have made to find work before coming to Britain.Work and Pensions Secretary,Iain Duncan Smith, said people should not be able to take advantage of British benefits.Job centers in England Scotland and Wales will use the strictest test. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said the test would ensure only migrants who have a legal right to be in Britain and plan to contribute (贡献) to this country can ask for benefits.“For the first time, migrants will be tested about what efforts they have made to find work before coming to the UK,and whether their English language skills will be a barrier to them finding jobs,” the DWP said.Mr Duncan Smith said British people are rightfully concerned that migrants should contribute to the country and should not be here for the attractiveness of the benefit system. He said the new test would help create a fair system, which provided for genuine workers and jobseekers, but didn't allow people to come and take advantages. To ask for the benefits, migrants will have to pass a habitual residence test(常居审核), including more than 100 extra questions compared to now. Migrants will be allowed to ask for benefits if they can prove they are legally allowed to be in Britain and are habitually resident in the country. As part of this they might be questioned about what measures they have taken to make themselves in Britain and what relationships they still have abroad. They will also have to provide more evidence that they are doing everything they can to find a job.1.According to the passage, migrants to the UK should be tested to ________.A.manage their incomeB.improve their English skillsC.make them find work easilyD.make the benefit system reasonable2.In Iain Duncan Smith's opinion,________.A.all people living in the UK could enjoy British benefitsB.people planning to contribute to the UK can get British benefits C.the former test was too easyD.it's hard to find work in Britain3.The underlined word “barrier” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.A.problem B.lessonC.job D.friend4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.A.many migrants didn't take measures to improve their EnglishB.migrants must answer over 100 questions before getting jobsC.it will be harder for migrants to get benefits than beforeD.good relationships abroad are more important than good jobs第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AThe largest-ever chariot pit (战车坑) of relics with carts and horse bones has been discovered in He' nan Province. It may lead to the uncovering of chariot pit groups that could be a key to understanding Chinese civilizations that existed more than 2,000 years ago.Experts said the relics are dated more than 300 years earlier than the famous warriors (武士) in Shan'xi Province. What excited the experts were two other projects that located two huge pits with similar features.“It is absolutely a miracle. These relics indicate that there could be a tomb group in this area, which is likely to be important for China's archaeological(考古学的) studies,”said Ma Juncai,a leading relic researcher in the province. In ancient China, carts, sheep, spoons and so on were buried to ensure that dead people had a happy afterlife The number and quality of the sacrifices indicated the social status of the dead. The custom was carried into the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qinshihuang's tomb, located near Xi'an, the capital of Shan'xi Province, is accompanied by thousands of wood or clay figures of warriors and horses. The tomb is probably the most well-known.The discovered pit measures 10. 4 meters long, 8.4 meters wide and5 meters long. It holds 20 carts in different sizes. The smallest one is 1.05 meters long and 1.3 meters wide.Experts think that 40 horses are likely to be found as well. Careful plans need to be made to deal with the demanding uncovering.“The clay is very weak and a small misstep can destroy the whole project. That' s why we need to take every step very carefully to protect these cherished cultural relics, ”Ma said.1.What's the passage mainly about?A.The dead people's sacrifices in ancient China.B.China's archaeological studies.C.The discovery of a large chariot pit in He'nan.D.The history of Chinese civilizations.答案:C主旨大意题。

课时作业(八)Section ⅡLearning aboutLanguage & Using LanguageⅠ.阅读理解AIf there is one thing I am sure about,it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact,I am pretty sure that it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen of sound in the air.And as for the Internet,it is never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.1.What is the best title for the text?A.The Best Way to Get NewsB.The Changes of MediaC.Make Your Own NewspaperD.The Future of Newspapers2.What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?A.Sports and international news.B.A menu of important news.C.The most important news.D.What you are interested in.3.From the text,we can infer that ________.A.newspapers will win the competition among the different media B.newspapers will stay with us together with other mediaC.television will take the place of newspapersD.some media will die out4.The underlined phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means ________.A.depend on B.compete withC.fight with D.kill of语篇解读:本文主要围绕着报纸将来的情况,提出报纸这一新闻媒体在近百年内不会消失的观点并分析了其原因。

ASpring is here and so is the cycling season. Here aresome tips on how to do it safely and comfortably.Watch your feet—Pushing with the wrong part ofthe foot can raise your risk of developing a painful injury of the heel and arch (足背), says Rob Werstine, a sports physiotherapist (理疗师) and board member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. You should push with the ball of your foot, he says.Layer up—While it's still cool, wear layers of clothing, with clothing close to the body that breathes and outer layers that do not absorb water. Go for bright colors that increase your visibility (可见度).Be reasonable—If you are just starting out and aren't in good shape, don't sign up for a 50-kilometre ride. And while cycling is great exercise for people who want to get into shape, if your doctor advises you not to do tiring exercise, cycling shouldn't be your starting position,Werstine says. Walk to begin getting into shape and then graduate to cycling.Fix the fit—If you develop lower back pain or numbness in your hands and fingers from cycling, it could be because your bike isn't adjusted properly for your height. A good cycle shopper can help you find the right height for the seat and handlebars, but if you have continuingproblems, consider consulting a bike fit physiotherapist, Werstine says.Be mindful—You have to pay attention on the roads to vehicles, other cyclists and pedestrians (行人). Consider taking a cycling safety course to practise your skills. Or do some reading about how to avoid dangerous cycling situations, bicyclesafe. com, for instance, lists 10 types of car-bike accidents and tells us how to avoid them.1.Which part of the foot should one use when cycling?A.The heel. B.The arch.C.The toes. D.The ball.答案:D细节理解题。

BWhy play games? Because they are fun,and a lot more besides. Following the rules... planning your next move... acting as a team member... these are all “game”ideas that you will come across throughout your life.Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they_translate_life_into_exciting_dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作).Many children's games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting. Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.4.Through playing hide-and-seek,children are expected to learn to ________.A.be a team leaderB.obey the basic rulesC.act as a grown-upD.predict possible danger答案:B细节理解题。
