Despite the intense competition, the athletes demonstrated a deep respect for one another and a genuine desire to support each other's achievements. 2008

Jacques Rogge speech at Beijing Olympics opening ceremonyMr President of the People's Republic of China,Mr Liu Qi,Members of the Organising Committee,Dear Chinese Friends,Dear Athletes,中华人民共和国主席先生,刘淇先生,奥组委的成员们,亲爱的中国朋友们,亲爱的运动员们:For a long time, China has dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world's athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,Good afternoon! Before I introduce our cultural programs, I want to tell you one thing first about 2008. You're going to have a great time in Beijing. China has its own sport legends. Back to Song Dynasty, about the 11th century, people started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. The game was very popular and women were also participating. Now, you will understand why our women football team is so good today. There are a lot more wonderful and exciting things waiting for you in New Beijing, a dynamic modern metropolis with 3,000 years of cultural treasures woven into the urban tapestry. Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, allkinds of restaurants and shopping malls that will amaze and delight you.But beyond that, it is a place of millions of friendly people who love to meet people from around the world. People of Beijing believe that the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will help to enhance the harmony between our culture and the diverse cultures of the world. Their gratitude will pour out in open expressions of affection for you and the great Movement that you guide.Within our cultural programs, education and communication will receive the highest priority. We seek to create an intellectual and sporting legacy by broadening the understanding of the Olympic Ideals throughout the country.Cultural events will unfold each year, from 2005 to 2008. We will stage multi-disciplined cultural programs, such as concerts, exhibitions, art competitions and camps which will involve young people from aroundthe world. During the Olympics, they will be staged in the Olympic Village and the city for the benefit of the athletes. Our Ceremonies will give China's greatest-and the world's greatest artists a stage for celebrating the common aspirations of humanity and the unique heritage of our culture and the Olympic Movement. With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man-Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese. Carrying the message "Share the Peace, Share the Olympics," the eternal flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world's highest summit - Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt. Everest. In China, the flame will pass through Tibet, cross the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visitHong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the 56 ethnic communities who make up our society. On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay.I am afraid I can not present the whole picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time. Before I end, let me share with you one story. Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible edtions of a far away land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true. He answered: What I have told you was not even half of what I saw. Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction of Beijing that awaits you.Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to athletes, spectators and the worldwide television audience alike. Come and join us.Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you all. Now, I would like to give the floor to Mr. He翻译稿:主席先生,女士们,先生们,下午好!

The Olympic Games, a grand international sporting event that takes place every four years, is not just a competition its a celebration of human spirit, unity, and diversity. As a high school student with a deep interest in sports, the Olympics have always been a source of inspiration and motivation for me.Growing up, I was always captivated by the stories of athletes who, through sheer determination and hard work, managed to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams on the world stage. The Olympics is where these stories come to life, and every edition is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. One of the most memorable moments for me was watching the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was the first time China hosted the Games, and the entire nation was filled with pride and excitement. The opening ceremony was a spectacle of lights, music, and cultural performances that showcased the rich history and traditions of China. It was a moment of national pride and a display of the countrys progress and development on the global stage. The athletes performances were equally inspiring. I remember watching Michael Phelps, the American swimmer, break records and win eight gold medals, a feat that had never been achieved before. His dedication and commitment to his sport were truly remarkable, and it was a lesson in the power of hard work and determination.Another unforgettable moment was Usain Bolts incredible performance inthe 100meter and 200meter races. His lightning speed and charismatic personality made him a global icon and a symbol of human potential. His victory in Beijing solidified his status as the fastest man in the world, and it was a moment that will forever be etched in the annals of Olympic history. The Olympics also serve as a platform for promoting peace and unity among nations. Athletes from different countries come together to compete and celebrate their achievements, transcending political and cultural differences. The Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the potential for cooperation and understanding. Moreover, the Games provide opportunities for lesserknown athletes to shine and make a name for themselves. For instance, the story of Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter who competed in the 2012 London Olympics, is a testament to the power of resilience and the ability to overcome adversity. Despite losing both legs, Pistorius determination and courage to compete at the highest level of sports inspired millions of people around the world. The Olympics also play a crucial role in promoting gender equality in sports. The inclusion of more womens events and the increasing participation of female athletes have helped to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. The success of female athletes like Simone Biles, who won multiple gold medals in gymnastics, has inspired young girls to pursue their dreams and defy societal expectations. However, the Olympics are not without their challenges. Issues such as doping, corruption, and political interference have marred the integrity of the Games in some instances. It is essential for the Olympic community to address these issues and uphold the values of fairness, transparency, and ethical conduct. In conclusion, the Olympic Games are a celebration of human achievement, a showcase of athletic prowess, and a symbol of global unity. As a high school student, I am inspired by the stories of athletes who have overcome adversity and achieved greatness. The Olympics remind us of our potential to excel, to dream big, and to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. As we look forward to the next edition of the Games, let us continue to embrace the Olympic spirit and work towards a more inclusive, equitable, and peaceful world.。

The Olympic spirit, a beacon of unity and inspiration, has been a cornerstone of international sportsmanship since the inception of the modern Olympic Games. It embodies the values of friendship, solidarity, and fair play, transcending the barriers of language, culture, and nationality. This essay aims to explore the essence of the Olympic spirit through personal experiences, anecdotes, and the impact it has had on the world.Growing up, the Olympics were a significant part of my life. As a young athlete, I was captivated by the stories of perseverance and dedication that unfolded every four years. The Olympic Games were not just a competition they were a celebration of human potential and the pursuit of excellence. The spirit of the Olympics taught me that victory is not solely defined by winning but by the journey and the lessons learned along the way.One of the most poignant examples of the Olympic spirit is the story of Jesse Owens, an AfricanAmerican athlete who defied racial barriers and won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. His achievements were a testament to the power of sports to unite people and challenge societal norms. Owens story is a reminder that the Olympic spirit is about breaking down barriers and promoting equality.Another inspiring story is that of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where two American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, raised their fists in a Black Power salute during the medal ceremony. This act of protest was a powerful statement against racial inequality and a call for change. The Olympic spirit, in this instance, was a platform for social justice and acatalyst for dialogue. The Olympic spirit also extends beyond the athletes to the volunteers, coaches, and spectators who contribute to the Games. Their dedication and support are integral to the success of the event. The camaraderie and sense of community that the Olympics foster are a reflection of the spirits core values. In recent years, the Olympics have faced challenges such as doping scandals and political controversies. However, these issues have only served to strengthen the resolve to uphold the Olympic spirit. The International Olympic Committee IOC has implemented stricter antidoping measures and has taken steps to ensure the integrity of the Games. The Olympic spirit is not confined to the Games themselves. It has a lasting impact on the host cities and countries, leaving a legacy of improved infrastructure, increased tourism, and a boost to the local economy. The 2008 Beijing Olympics, for example, showcased Chinas rapid development and its commitment to becoming a global sports powerhouse. Moreover, the Olympic spirit has the power to inspire individuals to pursue their dreams and overcome adversity. The Paralympic Games, which feature athletes with disabilities, exemplify the spirit of determination and resilience. These athletes demonstrate that physical limitations do not define ones ability to excel and contribute to society. In conclusion, the Olympic spirit is a multifaceted concept thatencompasses the pursuit of excellence, the celebration of diversity, and the promotion of social justice. It serves as a reminder that sports have the power to bring people together, transcending differences and fostering a sense of global community. As we look forward to future Olympic Games, let us continue to uphold and celebrate the values that make the Olympic spirit such a cherished and enduring symbol of hope and unity.。

The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic GamesUpdated:2005-11-11Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, the Five Friendlies will serve as the Official Mascots of Beij ing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace--and blessings f rom China--to children all over the world.Designed to express the playful qualities of f ive little children who f orm an intimate circle of friends, the Five Friendlies also embody the natural characteristics of f our of China's most popular animals--the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, theSw allow--and the Olympic Flame. In China's traditional culture and art, the f ish and w ater designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And so Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A f ish is also a symbol of surplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good lif e. The ornamental lines of the w ater-w ave designs are taken from w ell-known Chinese paintings of the past. Among the Five Friendlies, Beibei is known to be gentle and pure. Strong in w ater sports, she reflects the blue Olympic ring. Each of the Friendlies has a rhyming tw o-syllable name--a traditional w ay of expressing aff ection f or children in China.Beibei is the Fish, Jingj ing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Sw allow. When you put their names together--Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni--they say "Welcome to Beij ing," off ering a warm invitation that ref lects the mission of the Five Friendlies as young ambassadors f or the Olympic Games.T he Five Friendlies also embody both the landscape and the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast country of China. In their origins and their headpieces, you can see the f ive elements of nature--the sea, forest, f ire, earth and sky--all stylistic rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese f olk art and ornamentation.Spreading Traditional Chinese Blessings Wherever They GoIn the ancient culture of China, there is a grand tradition of spreading blessings through signs and symbols. Each o f the Five Friendlies symbolizes a different blessing--and w ill honor this tradition by carrying their blessings to the children of the w orld. Prosperity, happiness, passion, health and good luck will be spread to every continent as the Five Friendlies carry their invitation to Beijing 2008 to every part of the globe. At the heart of their mission--and through all of their w ork--the Five Friendlies w ill seek to unite the w orld in peace and friendship through the Olympic spirit. Dedicated to helping B eij ing 2008 spread its theme of One World, One Dream to every continent, the Five Friendlies reflect the deep desire of the Chinese people to reach out to the w orld in f riendship through the Games--and to invite every man, woman and child to take part in the great celebration of human solidarity that China will host in the light of the f lame in 2008.In China's traditional culture and art, the fish and water designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And s o Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A f ish is also a symbol of s urplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good lif e.T he ornamental lines of the water-w ave designs are taken from w ell-known Chinese paintings of the past. Among the Five Friendlies, Beibei is known to be gentle and pure. Strong in water sports, she reflects the blue Olympic ring.Jingjing makes children smile--and that's why he brings the blessing of happiness w herever he goes. You can see his j oy in the charming naivety of his dancing pose and the lovely wave of his black and w hite fur. As a national treasure and a protected species, pandas are adored by people everywhere. The lotus designs in Jingj ing's headdress, which are inspired by the porcela in paintings of the Song Dynasty (A.D.960-1234), symbolize the lush f orest and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Jingj ing w as chosen to represent our desire to protect nature's gif ts--and to preserve the beauty of nature for all generations. Jingj ing is charmingly naïve and optimistic. He is an athlete noted for strength who represents the black Olympic ring.In the intimate circle of Friendlies, Huanhuan is the big brother. He is a child of f ire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport--and passion is the blessing he bestow s.Huanhuan stands in the center of Friendlies as the core embodiment of the Olympic spirit. And while he inspires all w ith the passion to run f aster, jump higher and be stronger, he is also open and inviting. Wherever the light of Huanhuan shines, the inviting warmth of Beij ing 2008--and the wishf ul blessings of the Chinese people--can be felt. The f irery designs of his head ornament are draw n from the f amed Dunhuang murals--w ith j ust a touch of China's traditional lucky designs. Huanhuan is outgoing and enthusiastic. He excels at all the ball games and represents the red Olympic ring.Like all antelopes,Yingying is fast and agile and can s w iftly cover great stretches of land as he races ac ross the earth. A symbol of the vastness of China's landscape, the antelope carries the blessing of health, the strength of body that comes from harmony with nature.Yingying's f lying pose captures the essence of a species unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the f irst animals put under protection in China. The selection of the Tibetan Antelope ref lects Beijing commitment to a Green Olympics. His head ornament incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Sinkiang c ultures and the ethnic design traditions of Western China. Strong in track and f ield events, Yingying is a quick-witted and agile boy who represents the yellow Olympic ring.Every spring and summer, the c hildren of Beijing have f low n beautif ul kites on the c urrents of wind that blow through the capital. Among the kite designs, the golden-w inged s w allow is traditionally one of the most popular. Nini's figure is draw n f rom this grand tradition of f lying designs. Her golden w ings symbolize the inf inite sky and spread good-luck as a blessing wherever she flies. Sw allow is also pronounced "yan" in Chinese, and Yanjing is w hat Beijing w as called as an ancient capital city. Among the Friendlies, Nini is as innocent and j oyful as a s w allow. She is strong in gymnastics and represents the green Olympic ring.。

General Strategy The two programmes offered by Olympic Solidarity are structured in such a way as to offer the NOCs the chance to train their national coaches in different ways and at different levels, to meet today’s athlete training requirements. The programmes are not substantially different from those of the previous 2001 – 2004 quadrennial plan. For this reason, Olympic Solidarity is now looking to encourage the NOCs to create links between the different options and thereby increase the general level of training for coaches around the world.

Technical Courses for Coaches Programme Guidelines
• Objectives
• The main objective of the technical courses programme is to provide basic training to coaches – officially recognised as such – through courses led by an expert from another country. During the 2005–2008 quadrennial, particular focus will be laid on advance planning of the training courses and holding these in line with the rules established by the International Federations (IF) for this kind of training. The basic idea is to allow for a “standardisation” of the training given to coaches around the world, providing a quality and performance benchmark for NOCs and their national sports structures (national federations, coaches, athletes, etc.).

Description
Implementation
All training courses will be conducted by an international level expert nominated by the respective IF. On average, the training will last between 10 and 15 days, but in all cases it must respect the rules established by the IFs for this kind of training with regard to number of participants, number of hours of theory and practical training, final assessment method, etc.
Technical courses for coaches Olympic scholarships for coaches
Basic training Individual training
• •
Basic Training The programme of technical courses for coaches has been in place for many years, and still meets a key need for the NOCs. The programme’s potential has therefore long since been established, but Olympic Solidarity hopes that the NOCs will plan courses over the whole four-year period and reinforce their policy for selecting the candidates for this kind of training. Individual Training Once coaches have completed their training, it is important for those who have received an Olympic scholarship to pass on their knowledge and generally strengthen the position of their sport within their country. In some cases, they may be called upon to lead training sessions or set up a longterm development programme, as they will have acquired the knowledge to do so and also have in-depth experience of sport in their country.
Planning and Objectives
Olympic Solidarity invites the NOCs to plan their activities over the long term, with training objectives for their coaches between now and the end of the 2005– 2008 quadrennial (see annex 1). The NOCs have the opportunity to hold a maximum of 10 courses during the 2005–2008 period. It is up to each NOC to decide when and precisely how many courses are held each year, according to its own specific needs. The aim is to enable NOCs to organise the training given from one year to the next in a way that suits them best, and wherever possible to use the technical course programme to identify potential candidates for the coach scholarship programme. Higher-level courses (level 2 or 3) can also be held, but only for coaches who have already attended a course on the level below. In order to ensure a large enough number of participants, these training courses may involve coaches from several NOCs and be organised at regional level.
