One day, her father was told that he was the lineal descendants of ancient family of the D’Urbervilles. He and his vain and vulgar wife decided to sent Tess to a rich family also called D’Urbervilles’s descendant. In order to increase their society status, Tess went to the rich family, after that being raped and pregnant. The child was born, then died soon. Several years later, she left home to a milk factory to work. There did she meet her true love Angel Clare. They fell in love and engaged. She greatly admired Angel Clare and loved him. But Angel did not learn of her previous relationship with Alec until their wedding night. On the wedding night, Tess told all about it to his husband, but she did not get his understanding. After that Angel abandoned her then he went to Brazil to develop his business alone. When Tess and Alec met again, because of the hard life, she lived with Alec again. Several years later, Angel returned from abroad. He was very sorry for what he did. And he told Tess his thought. For Tess loved him so addicted, she wanted to back to Angel. So Tess murdered Alec. After she spent a few days of happiness with Angel, Tess was arrested and then died. Thomas Hardy was the last important novelist of the Victoria ages, an age of realism rather than of romanticism –a realism which strives to tell the whole truth showing moral and physical diseases as they are. Victorian literature in general truthfully represents the reality and spirit of this age long—realistic, thickly plotted, and crowded with characters. Hardy’s expression of the truth of this age which came from the agitation of life and fatalism of human being also had a high placein Western literature. The tragic idea in H ardy’s novels spring and develop in form and connotation. The tragedy consciousness in Hardy’s novels originated from Western traditional tragic spirit which was full of rationalism and profound reflection on the contradictions of human society. And it also revealed an ineluctable and inevitable conditionality of fate. That is to say, the heroes or heroines would slip into the tragic path of life in the end in Western literature no matter whether they liked or not, or where they hided. Tragedy was their final arrangement. When he was young, he derived a love of music from his father and a devotion to literature from his mother. He grew up in the Dorset shire, of which the environment there became the main backdrop of his writings. Thomas Hardy was afamous critical realistic wreter at the turn of the 19th century in England, His writings often reflected the change after capitalism intruded the countries in England and the people’s hard life. Hardy began to creating the novels in the early 1870s. In the late 1890s, he turned to write poetry. The Britain in this period was undergoing a transition period from laisser-faire capitalism to imperialism. The capitalism thought that the social system of this period could not be changed. But Hardy’s works exactly clas hed with it, which reflected the tremendous changes of society due to the invasion of industrial capital to the village. Tess of the D’Urbervilles was published in the year of 1891, which was one of his most famous novels. This novel explosed women’s tra gic life in that time. The thesis discribs two reasons, one is Tess’s personality character, another one is society reasonsI Historical Background1.1: A brief introduction to HardyTess is the heroine of Tomas Hardy’s representative work—Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Thomas Hardy was a British post-realism, the most distinguished novelists and poet. Hardy is the most representative he claims to be "the character and environment of the novel" of a group of works in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. In many ways, he belonged more to the 20th century than to the 19th century. He was known as a Victorian Poet .He used his writings to elaborate his own pessimistic view of life. His poetry marks the transition from the Victorian Age to the modernist movement of the 20th century. He carried forward and developed the literary traditions of the Victorian Age. He described the tragic plots vividly and truthfully in his works. He was considered as ―Shakespeare of British novels‖. Hardy's langu age has the simplicity of a countryman’s speech coupled with the sophisticated vocabulary of an educated man.Symbolism is an important feature of Hardy’s words, so that many objects, natural phenomena and characters in the novels are given symbolic meaning s.Unlike some other authors, most of Hardy’s novels are tragic. His novels are so well-knit that they calls us for deep thought about the true life in Victorian age.1.2: Work BackgroundTess is the most representative work of Hardy as both a naturalistic and a critical realist writer. This story happened in the late of ―Britain's Victorian era‖. At thattime, Capitalist class controlled the society, and all laws served for them. Farmers were at the bottom of the society, they had no equal right as the capitalist class. In addition, men were the center of the society and women has no right at all at that time. The story is about the tragic life of Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor family. She is sent to work as a maid for d’Urbervilles, because she has to support her poor family. Tess is seduced by Alec, the son of the family which she serves for, and then gives birth to a child. However, the child dies in infancy, which makes her very depressed. After that, she goes to work on a dairy farm, and then she is engaged to Angel Clare, the son of a clergyman. On their wedding night, they tell each other about their past hoping to be forgiven by each other. However, Clare leaves her after that because he can’t accept the truth. Then Tess becomes a labor again. She is insulted and ill-treated by her master. What’s worse, her father’s death and the bad condition of her family drive her to seek help from Alec who is a preacher now, and she can do nothing but to abbey him. Angel Clare comes back and wants to be reco nciled to Tess, but the fact that Tess’ living with Alec hinders her from coming back to Clare. At last, Tess kills Alec in despair and she is soon arrested, tried and hanged.Origins of Tess’ tragic destiny are mainly composed of three aspects—tragic fate, society tragedy and her own personalityII Deep consideration about tragic fateThis related with author's own personality and view. He believe there exist a super nature force.Hardy was pessimistic about life. The main theme of his novels is thefutilit y of man’s effort to struggle against cruel and unintelligible fate, chance, and circumstances, which are all predestined by the immanent will.Tess did not want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defender herself. So she lost her innocence and th at’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’ crime, but he was not blamed. Why it is always the woman who pays? Why they are always hurt? Why was Tess’ girlish purity lost? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why does the bad often ruin the good? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak! Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly!III Society tragedy3.1 Family tragedyTess’ family is another important reason for her tragedy. On one hand, her family is very poor. Her father is a lazy vendor and her mother is a vulgar wash worker. She has young brothers and sisters who need care. So she has no choice but to try her best to make money to support her family. On the other hand, her parents want to live a better life and show off the so-called ―aristocrat‖ status, especially her mother. They are eager to send Tess to the D’Urbervilles family to work and marry the wealthy gentleman. It was if only a kinsman, an aristocrat, could approach her. To some extent, it is Tess’ parents who make the chance for Alec. In other words, Tess is a tool used to get money and reputation for her parents. Tess would not enter d’Urbervilles family if her family is better off; Tess would not be insulted by Alec if her family does not give her any pressure. What’sworse, her family never teaches her anything that a girl needs to know. Therefore, ―it is this homeless despair of a family which has lost its rights and independence in the village community that gives Tess finally into the invader’s power‖3.2 Society tragedyThe background times of the novel is late nineteenth century, when the British invaded the capitalist mode of production in agriculture in remote areas, it brought agricultural workers misfortune and bad luck. In this period the British Empire is going through a few bad turns, it was maintained in the world of industrial monopoly position in the gradual loss of the capitalist world because the outbreak of severe economic crisis in the seventies . After two decades, British was almost constantly in a crisis and depression. In rural areas, from 70 to 90 a corresponding outbreak of a serious crisis happened. Works in the background is a true reflection of the rural girl Tess short and tragic life.3.3 Worldly prejudiceTess is the unfortunate victim of secular morality prejudice. Tess was seduced by Alec .But she did not get married. She suffered from the gossips and blamed herself. She gained a bad reputation and nobody dared to go near her. On the wedding day, she told her unpleasant experience to Angel, hoping that she would be forgiven as she forgave him. Angel refused to forgive her, although he was also a play-boy.What a shame! The worldly prejudice sacrificed Tess’ pure love and deprived her wrights of pursuing happiness!IV:Her own personalityHer tragdy can’t be separated from her own weakness in character, because she obviously has the dual nature of the society character---resistance and compromise. As a common person, Tess fought with the society helplessly. In the end, she turned out to be the sacrificial victim of society like all other things which disobey the morality and ethic.ConclusionTess is actually a victim of her society. Hardy created the heroine Tess just to criticize the society in his time. Hardy’s works are known as ―novels of character and environment.‖ The origins of Tess’ tragic fate are various.Tess became a victim of the modern society. It raise us so many thoughts and it is great wealth to us .It reward us reading thousand times to experience tess's life.Bibliography[1], Thomas Hardy. This paper analyses the causes of Tess’s tragedy from four aspects. The first one is the main cause of this tragedy, that is the Victorian society in which Tess lives, because of the distorted social customs, moral principles and unjust social laws, Tess’s tragedy is inevitable in that environment. The second aspect is about Tess’s own internal characteristics, Tess’s weakness of indulging in fantacy accelerates her tragedy. The third aspect is about her parents, Alec and Angel, they all contribute to her tragedy. The last one talks about Tess’s tragic fate, since the world is hostile to human beings, there are many unfortunate coincidences in Tess’s life, so her tragedy is doomed. Through the analysis of the causes of Tess’s tragedy, I hope more people would appreciate this novel and learn to be more humanistic and sympathetic, and our society would become more harmonious and just.

Tess’struggle for her life2.1 The brief description of Tess2.2 The relationship with Alec and Angel2.3 The miserable life of Tess3. The reasons why Tess lives a miserable lifeAbstractTess of the D’Urbervilles is the most famous and the best work by Thomas Hardy. The novel mainly describes the life of a kind, brave and charming country girl-Tess. Tess was a daughter of poor John Durbeyfiled. In her whole life, first, when she was work for her “cousin”Alec, she was raped by her “cousin”. Then, she gave birth to a baby, but was dead. Second, she meets Angle, and falls love with he. She got her true love, but her lover abandoned her because of her impure. Finally, she killed Alec for her true love, and she was hanged. Tess struggled for her life, but at that time, she couldn’t’make it. ”Some dreams, some affection, some hobby, at least some remote and distant hope which, though perhaps starving to nothing, still lived on, as hopes will.”(Thomas Hardy, 8). The dream is so far away from Tess. The tragedy, in Thomas Hardy words, reveals the tragedy of the society.Key wordsTess, character, fate, miserable life, true love, societyThe characters of the Tess1. A brief introduction to the author and the novelThe introduction of Thomas HardyThere is no need to argue that Thomas Hardy is a great tragedy writer, and famous for his depictions of the imaginary country “Wessex”. His work mainly reflects the tragedy of human life. His two novels, Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891) and Jude the Obscure (1895) are his last long fiction works. And his work was admired by D. H. Lawrence as “masters of the greatest tragedies in the English novel “English writer Virginia Woolf as “Shakespeare in the English novel”.1.2 The main content of the novelThe novel mainly describes a village girl-Tess. She is the eldest daughter in a poor rural family. In a chance, she meets Alecd’Urbervile, who pretending to be her cousin, and later raped her. And then Tess returns home, gives birth to a baby but died for illness. So Tess finds another job and meets another man-Angel. She fells love with he and gets married with Angel. But quickly was discarded by her husband for having a child with another man even the baby id dead. At the end of the novel, Tess kills Alec for her true love and finally hanged.2.Tess’struggle for her lifeThe brief description of TessTess is a country girl, but she is a born beauty. She is kind-hearted, brave and charming. She struggles for her life, but fail. She hopes live with her angle, but the society destroyed it.2.2 The relationship with Alec and AngelAlec is her “cousin”, he cheat her, rape her, and make her in trouble. Tess hates him, but had to live with him because of the cruel society, to be his mistress. She fells love with Angel, and Angel is her angel, he brings happiness to her. Angel is her husband but still discards her. Finally, Tess kills Alec for her true love and has a-seven-day with her lover. And then she is dead. The miserable life of TessTess’s miserable life begins to when her father knows his family’s ancestor is a nobleman. So she goes to her “cousin’s” home. Her “cousin” Alec makes use of her innocent and naïve cheat and rapes her. So her life becomes in trouble. She gives birth a child but dead for illness. Tess hates him, but finally had to be his mistress. Her second adversity comes with her confess to her husband. She regards his husband as her angel. “She loves he extremely, she looks he as god.”(Thomas Hardy, 261). After the wedding, Tess and Angel confess their pasts toeach other. Tess forgives Angel for his past error, but Angel cannot forgive Tess’past. So he leaves Tess for Brazil. He is a sensitive and hesitated man, as the author write, “What alters when it alteration finds.”(Shakespeare, Sonnet, 116th poem, line 3) And finally, she kills Alec and lives a-seven-day with her lover and later arrested and dead.3. The reason why Tess lives a miserable lifeTess’s miserable life reflects a society’s miserable life. In that time, she wants to live a happy with her lover, but the society destroyed i t.,”outside was the inexorable” (Thomas Hardy, 351). Now she is not naïve, not innocent. “Almost at a leap Tess thus changed from simple girl to complex woman.”(Thomas Hardy, 145). At the end of the novel, when she kills the man she hatred, it means her another miserable comes, that is dead. In actually, her tragedy is caused by the times she lives and her natural weakness. She has no power to defense herself. Just because of her contradictory and tragic character, Tess has such miserable fate.ConclusionIt is true that we should respect Tess because she endures a great deal of pain. Through this passage, we can see from her father know that his family’s ancestor is peer, her miserable life is begin. Maybe Tess will live a happy life if doesn’t have such events. But it is impossible. Alec is so cruel too her, so Angel does. Alec is the direct reason for her death, but Angel is crueler. He gives her hope, but also put her to the hell. But she still loves him. ”Angel- I am almost glad- yes, glad! This happiness could not have lasted-it was too much-I have had enough; and now I shall not live for you to despise me.(Thomas Hardy, 357). She feels happy when she lives with Angel, although the time is too short. In fact, the cruelest person is the society. She lost her purity, and lost her fate. Because live in that time, the society cannot accept a girl who lost her pure. Her Angel also does wrong things, but he has not been blamed for it. So, at last, the society ruins the good thing and “ended his sport with Tess”. (Thomas Hardy, 359).Bibliography1. Thomas Hardy. Tess of the D’Urbervilles [M].Xian:兴界图书出版社,19972.

Title: A New Interp retation of the Characters in Tess of the D’U rbervillesAbstract: With many distinctive features, the characters in the novel Tess of the D ’U rbervilles are very imp ressive. Tess, the heroine, is a symbolic image of a comp letely new agriculturalworker. She is the embodiment of beauty and love, daughter of the nature, with both the traditional and modern characteristics in her. She is noble2minded, but is considered a woman offending public decency. Although sometimesweak and feeble in her personality when confronted with the calamities, she disp lays both fortitude, with a steadfast sp irit of the self2sacrifice. All these make her a moving and tragic figure. That isn’t only the personal resistance, but also the demonstration of her demanding for the human rights of all the working class and the exposure of the evils of the whole society. Angel is a rep resentative of a cap italist hypocriticalmorality and an idealist in the sense of philosophy. The contradiction of the ideology and the lofty ideal of love divorced from reality are the contradictory results of the ideal and the reality. His philandering with Tess reveals the hypocrisy of the religion. Adored and wooed byAngel, Tess is destroyed sp iritually.Tess has been forcibly occup ied byAlec, who was a figure of an up start, bymeans of the business, in the early cap italist period.Contrasted with Angel, the idealist, Alec was the devil of the carnal desire. All the characters show the varieties of humanity nature and it is the two male characterswho had actually strangled Tess. Although being looked upon by Tess either as god or devil, they make Tess unable to escape from the drag net of the cap italism. IfAlec could be said to have ruthlessly occup ied the purity of her body, we may also say that itwasAngelwho hasmercilessly damaged the innocence of her mind. In a word, Angel and Alec has cap tured, killed and destroyed Tess spiritually and bodily.Key words: Tess of the DU rbervilles characters imagesAuthor: Yao Zhenp ing is associate p rofessor at the Basic CoursesDepartment of the PLA Academy of Communications(Wuhan 430010, China),engagedinEnglishteaching.

Living at the turn of the century, she is influenced by the past traditional ideas and the modern life. In this case, she can not break away from the old social moral and find her happiness. At the end, Tess has to kill her own will and passion and return to her former destructive way of life. The cause can be devided into three groups: social cause, family cause and the cause of Tess herself. To support the thesis, the paper is divided into five parts. The first part gives an introduction to both the author and the novel. The second part makes an analysis of the social cause in the novel. The third part makes an analysis of the family cause. The fourth part makes an analysis of the cause of Tess herself. The fifth part is the conclusion, restating the thesis of the paper.Key words: Tess; tragedy; society cause; family cause; herself causeⅠ. Introduction1.1 A brief introduction to the authorThomas Hardy was born in the southwest of England on 2 June 1840 and it was where he spent most of his life apart from a short time in London and Weymouth in Dorset, the area that later became the famous “Wessex” in many of his novels. His father was a master builder who inherited the cottage from his father. Jemina, Hardy's mother, was a domestic servant but whose love of books and the countryside influenced young Thomas. From his parents, Hardy gained all the interests that would appear inhis novels and his own life. Thomas was a sensitive and intelligent child; he received education at local schools until he was 15 years old. At the age of 16, he was apprenticed to a local architect. Six years later he was apprenticed to a famous architect in London. During his spare time, he studied widely: language, literature, history, philosophy and art, and he even won two prizes for essays on architectural subjects. But architecture was never his desired profession. Soon he was writing poetry; when that failed, he began to write novels. Then under the influence of an editor of publishing company he met by chance, Thomas Hardy began to write novels. He wrote a total of twenty long novels, eight volumes (total 918 poems) and a lot of short novels named “Wessex”. In 1895, Hardy didn’t write novel any more, but he had a good reputation all over the world. When he died, he had already become a great man in English history, and was regarded as the last great litterateur. His works especially were famous for tragic spirit and destiny sense. He was also thought as a great critical realistic and naturalistic writer.Protagonist Tess possessed many excellent qualities in the book, however Hardy chose the word “pure” to describe her, which is an essential way to write Tess of the D’urbervilles. This challenges the traditional chastity idea, and negates the trimly-hold chastity idea that man is the center, exposing its unfairness and harm.1.2 A brief introduction to the novelTess of the D’Urbervilles, known as “novel of character and environment”, was the most outstanding and most famous works by Thomas Hardy, and in it the author uttered his sharpest social criticism. He truthfully depicted the impoverishment and decay of small farmers. They were mercilessly exploited by the rich landlords. This novel told us a beautiful but tragic story. Tess was a beautiful and kind-hearted rural girl. The poverty of the family forced her to claim kinship with the sham but rich d’Urbervilles. Tess was seduced and impregnated by Alec, the young master of the d’Urbervilles, a dandy that she did not and would never fall in love with. Tess returned home disgraced and later gave birth to a baby, who died soon. People’s opinion forced Tess to leave her hometown and worked as a milkmaid at a dairy-house, where she met with the second man in her life-Mr.Angel Clare, son of a clergyman. Naturally, the two fell in love with each other. On their wedding night, Angel made a confession about his past dissipation and was readily forgiven by Tess, but when Tess told her own past to her lover, expecting his understanding and forgiveness, Angel could not accept the disgrace in any case and deserted her to go abroad alone. Helpless and hopeless, Tess had to wander from place to place, doing the hardest work and bearing the harshest insult. Then D’Urbervilles who met Tessagain by chance, broke into her life again. Receiving no answer from her lover after two letters, and suffering from poverty and illness of the family, Tess, although not willing, agreed to marry Alec. Before long, the repentant Angel returned from abroad. Tess was led into a mess. Tess, putting all the blames of her unhappiness on Alec, killed him and fled with Angel. However, she didn’t break away from the punishment of the laws, and at last was caught by the police and hanged. As a matter of fact, the book Tess of the D’urbervilles presents a tale that how the society forced a clean, honest, simple, upright, hardworking, clever and beautiful girl to a hopeless situation even to kill people at last. This is a tragedy. As the protagonist, Tess is unfortunate in the novel.Ⅱ. An analysis of the social cause in the novelThe early years of the Victorian England was a time of rapid economic development as well as serious social problem. Towards the mid-century, England had reached its highest point of development as a world power. And yet beneath the great prosperity and richness, there existed widespread poverty and wretchedness among the working class. But the last three decades of the century witnessed the decline of the country and the decay of the Victorian values. At the social background, the working class was becoming poorer. The middle-class industrialists’ greed drove to exploiting workers to the utmost and brought greater suffering and poverty to the working mass.Thomas Hardy experienced fundamental social changes. Tess as a tragedy heroine, abounded in this period. Under Hardy’s pen, the heroine Tess was created as an attractive and warm-hearted pure woman, who had the quality of endurance and self-sacrifice. Tess had long been regarded as the most exceptional woman character in literary history. The life of this pure woman was tragic. She was firstly seduced, then abandoned and finally driven to murder for she was hanged. What was responsible for her tragic fate? What was the reason for a pure woman to become a murderer? We couldn’t help thinking over these questions again and again. From the tragic story of Tess’ short life, we could see in a deeper sense that it was the capitalist society of the time that had ruined her. Living in a society overwhelmed by capitalist Law, religion, morality and state apparatus, Tess, a poor peasant, inevitably led a tragic life and finally went to her collapse.2.1 Unfair laws and systems of bourgeois societyFirstly, in capitalist society, the direct purpose of setting laws and systems was to protect the interests of bourgeois, not for the interests of common people. Alec was a hypocritical rogue, but he went far and near with a false kindness. As a pure girl, Tess, brought up with the traditional ideas of womanly virtues, wasabused and destroyed by Alec, agents of the destructive force of the society. Because Tess was a very beautiful and attractive country girl, Alec, a frivolous young man, only wanted to get her for her beauty. In fact, he didn’t fall in love with Tess really at all. We could see all evils on Alec’s misbehavior. However, he could escape laws, was protected and lived freely. After outraging Tess, he only felt a little regret, not to take the responsibility for Tess. What about Tess? At last she was caught by police and hanged. Although Tess’ crime was more serious than Alec’s, the result was too different. Why did this result come? From the social rank, Alec represented the ruling class and was a symbol of the evil element of the society. He could do everything that violated the laws, regardless of other people's feelings and social responsibility. However, Tess belonged to lower class, so when she did the wrong thing, she must take the responsibility upon herself. From the whole novel, the author-Thomas Hardy arranged this contrast with the purpose of attacking the unfair social laws and system. Tess was a victim of bourgeois society. From all of the above, we can see at that time laws and systems didn’t maintain society safety, but to serve the bourgeois.2.2 Hypocritical religionSecondly, Tess’ destiny had close relations with hypocritical religion. For a hypocritical and immoral man, Alec became a bourgeoisie and new-rich by doing business. Then when Tess was forced to visit D’Urbervilles family, she met Alec for the first time. When she worked in D’Urbervilles, he tried to seduce and impregnate Tess by fair means or foul and made her no more maiden, but quoting the Bible, he thought that all the responsibility was attributed to Tess, and he didn’t have any crime. Then Tess met Alec again by chance, and she found that Alec, who once did harm to her, became a wandering preacher and had been converted to Christianity by Angel's father, the converted Clare. Both Alec and Tess were shocked by their encounter, and Alec appallingly begged Tess never to tempt him again. Soon after, however, he was again begging Tess to marry him, having turned his back on his religious ways.Alec-a rapist could be forgiven by God and allowed to do everything once more, but Tess- an innocent girl wasn’t forgiven. It showed the real essence of hypocritical religion. To every reader’s surprise, when Alec turned up once again, he became a parson. Alec- a flunky could put on religionary clothes and went to do missionary work. He had become a converted man then, who was sorry for his past behavior. And in order to make up for his fault, he decided to marry Tess. Suffering from the poverty of the family and illness, Tess, although not willing, agreed to marry Alec. At the beginning of the novel, Alec turned up as a hypocritical rogue, at last became a parson. There was a great contrast between goodness and evil. The real essence of religionwas more and more clear. These absurd matters directly revealed hypocritical character of religion. From these facts, people can see that Holy religion was not holy, only a tool for cheating the common people. Because of poverty, Tess had no opportunity for studying and lacked of scientific knowledge. Although Tess, a peasant girl, felt suspicious about Alec’s missionary work, they had to accept these fatuous ideas and consented to live with Alec. In the final analysis, poverty decided Tess’ fate. People’ poverty was created by society, so Tess’ fate had close relation with society at the times.2.3 Traditional social moralityOn their wedding, Angel and Tess both confessed error, Angel told Tess about an affair he had with an older woman in London, and Tess told Angel about her history with Alec. Tess forgave Angel, but Angel couldn’t forgive Tess; he gave her some money and boarded a ship bound for Brazil. Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so that she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime but he was not blamed for it. Why is it always the woman who pays?In the past, there was a culture, which didn’t think of women as human beings. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are not included!” People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls. Traditionally, people think: Girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn’t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. What about men? People did not care whether he was an experienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. They thought man was equal to power and power was equal to rights. So Angel was deeply influenced by traditional conventions. So the intellectual and free-thinking Angel was the 'slave to custom and conventionality' and the relatively ignorant Tess was the true humanist.Angel had mixed two things in his dull brain, theology and morals, which in the primitive days of mankind had been quite distinct. In the end, his intentions were good, yet it was too late. Traditional morality deeply hurt Tess and also damaged their happiness. Hypocritical moral standard of bourgeois society could be regardedas one cause of Tess’s destruction. Two lovers unwillingly left each other because of conventional prejudice deep-rooted in capitalism society. In today's society, which is more free and liberal, we should do away with those decaying values and ideas, and do our best to respect ourselves and others, and cherish our lives.Ⅲ. An analysis of the family cause in the novelThe Victorian England was a time of rapid economic development as well as serious social problem. The middle-class life of the time was characterized by prosperity, respectability and material progress. And yet beneath the great prosperity and richness, there existed widespread poverty and wretchedness among the working class. Because of capitalist’ invasion, in the towns and cities where new factories and mines bloomed, population grew at a high rate. Workers and their families crowed in the dirty and insanitary slums. The working conditions of workers were unimaginably brutal, especially in textile factories and coal mines where women and children were widely employed. The worsening living and working conditions made the mass unemployed. Tess was born in a peasant family and could not break away from this disaster.3.1 Family backgroundOn the one hand, all family background decided that Tess’ tragedy would happen. Tess was born in a poor family. Her family belonged to unwelcome and between the beetle and the block family. As the eldest child of the family (6 younger brothers and sisters, from 3 to 11 years old), the burden of poverty rested on Tess at any moment. At the same time Tess deeply loved her brothers and sisters at all times. He couldn't put up with their poor life and wanted to make her family happy and lively. She had to help the parents to support the whole family. She was responsible and did her best for the family. In order to make money, Tess had to drive for the haggling business instead of her father. Unluckily, on the road the horse “Prince” died in a traffic accident. An innocent and kind girl-Tess convinced she had murdered Prince, felt responsible for her family's subsequent lack of livelihood and therefore complied with Joan's wish that she went in search of their rich relations. She would sacrifice herself for the sake of the whole family. Although she had taken all the responsibility upon herself, but all family background decided that the tragedy would happen sooner or later, just the form was different. On the other hand it was her pregnancy by Alec. Tess's family is very poor, so she lost many chances to study and knew little. She didn’t know how to protect herself, because she had no chance to study in school and the people around herself didn't help her . From the fact we can know the finally cause is poverty. Poverty decided her fate. However the poverty of her family was created by society and reflectedcapitalism outlook. So capitalist society should be responsible for the tragic life of Tess. This novel has for its setting the agricultural region of the southern countries of England. The writer truthfully depicts the impoverishment and decay of small farmers who became hired field hands and roamed the country in search of seasonal job. These laborers are mercilessly exploited by the rich landowners. In this novel, we can see clearly that one of the real reasons that led to her extermination is her impoverishment.3.2 Parents’ influence on TessTess Durbeyfield suffered a great deal of tribulation in her tragic life. Although her life was filled with misfortune, she should not take all responsibilities for her tragic events. Her parents also had many responsibilities. Tess’ parents - Mr. and Mrs. Durbyfield’ ideas clung to their obsolete idea of the family in total ignorance of the reality had a great effect on Tess’ in mind. At Tess’ age, Tess was completely independent in life and worked hard in order to make better life for all her family. Under her parents’ influence, Tess had to do something that she didn’t like. One of the first tragedies in Tess' life that seemed to lead to all the others, was when she was taking a load of bees to the market she fell asleep and accidentally killed the horse. This was not Tess' fault. In the first place, it wasn't her responsibility to take the bees to the market. It was the responsibility of her drunken father. If anyone was to blame for being irresponsible, it was Tess' parents. Tess was always doing work her parents should be doing because her parents were too lazy and Tess felt responsible for supporting the family. The night before Tess left, her parents went off to a bar while Tess was left at home to take care of the family and the chores.Another tragedy in the life of Tess Durbeyfield was her pregnancy by Alec. At first, one may think it is all her fault for getting pregnant, but if one takes a closer look at the situation Tess was really in, it was quite obvious that she was, once again, a victim of misfortune. Tess was a victim of her parents' social aspirations to ascend the social scale. The desire to leap from low, poor farmers to aristocrats was almost humorous. They made the great mistake of believing that a name indicated aristocracy and the irony was that Alec D'Uberville who actually had the ancient aristocratic name was anything but a gentleman. Her mother even consulted a fortune-teller book for guidance. But Tess did not know Alec was the false descendent of an ancient noble family, the d'Urbervilles and when the lascivious Alec D'Urberville, Mrs. D'Uberville's son, procured her a job tending fowls on theD'Urberville estate, Tess had no choice but to accept. When Tess worked there, shewas seduced and impregnated by Alec. Tess' mother never educated her about some ofthe essential facts of life and Tess did not know what most men liked. In addition,Tess' selfish mother wanted her to marry Alec so that Durbeyfield family could be financially well off. She did not think about the best interests of Tess.Ⅳ. The cause of Tess herself in the novelAs a successful female figure Hardy contributed to the literary world, the character of Tess was multi-dimensional. Although the tragedy of Tess was largely caused by the social surroundings in the Victorian Age, it was still improper to concentrate on one thing but neglect everything else. The character of Tess is also another reason. “The tragedy of Tess is also a tragedy of her character in other words. The character of Tess is one factor to cause her tragic ending.”From the novel we can see that Tess showed an inflexible courage to the roughlife and firm pursuit of true love. Though she was always under the control of fate, she didn’t give up hope. On this point it is worthy of being appreciating, but her personality is not perfect. One’s character decides his fate. The mental and emotionalmake-up of Tess also accounts for her own final tragedy. Hardy was a fatalist. Inthe viewpoint of Hardy, it was fate that caused the destruction of Tess. Hardy believed that everyone was a toy in the hands of fate, and that fate was particularly harsh to women. In the subtitle, Hardy addressed his main character as a “Pure Woman”. Tess indeed embodied many good virtues: honesty, loyalty, responsibility, and beauty. However, Tess had her faults such as her innocence, kindness and weakness.4.1 Her innocence and kindnessTess lived at the end of 19th century. The unreasonable, marble hearted, insatiably landlords had super economic exploitation to the oppressed people, so the peasants were becoming poorer and poorer and in a state of starvation. Tess was bornin a peasant family and led a simple and beautiful though primitive rural life whichwas gradually declining and disappearing as England marched into an industrial country. Tess, a pure woman, was brought up with the traditional idea of womanly virtues. When Tess fell in love with Angel, Tess’ mother advised her daughter not to reveal her past to Angel. Yet, Tess thought that she could deserve the love of Angelonly when she told him about her past. Tess was too innocent and kind from what she thought and what she said to Angel on wedding night. Angel had been influenced by social conventions, so he could not accept Tess because of her past sin. Tess adheredto no doctrine or tradition and believed Angel would forgive her past.In her opinion, Tess thought that the world had the appearance of innocence.Everything was clean, beautiful and untouched, just like she was in the beginning of the novel. Her attempt to remove this sexual component of herself by making herself less attractive therefore represented a measure of self-defense. Tess mutilated herself in order to ward off the attention that had damaged her. If her innocent and kindness was a merit, it was just this merit that brought her a series of bad luck.4.2 Her weaknessStill, even if there are numerous shinning points in the character of Tess, the weakness is also an essential part of her character. Firstly, the spirit of revolt was a major characteristic of Tess. Her sharp struggle with feudalism and capitalist morality, laws and social environment represented the spirit of revolt on Tess. Although Tess needed to suffer all agonies, she kept pursuing true love. Nevertheless, it was really brave for Tess to struggle with her social surroundings from the beginning to the end but she could not get rid of public moral judgment that she suffered from when she faced her true love, Angel in the novel. It is a pity that she also used public moral judgment to treat herself when she suffered from the public moral judgment after Alec seduced her. Also, because of the weakness in Tess, it is logical for readers to accept her tragic ending. While she was being tortured by social judgments and old moral, she was judging herself by the very standards she fought against. Tess was a young woman who tended to find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, previously, it was accepted as a view that Tess is a victim of violence. She is innocent. But, with further research on Tess and her tragedy, another view has become popular, that is, she was a victim, but she was also, at times, irresponsibleIn details, Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so that she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime but he was not blamed for it. Why is it always the woman who pays? Why are they always hurt? Why was Tess’s girlish purity lost? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why do the bad often ruin the good? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak! Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly!Tess felt guilty about her error with Alec. Hardy looked very closely at this feeling of guilt and suggested that it was unnecessary for a number of reasons. Firstly, although she had broken an accepted social law, the villagers of Martlott did not morally censure her. She had an illegitimate child, but they still accepted her as an individual, a member of the community, and did not look upon her as an outcast. However, Tess imagined her guilt to be a natural consequence of her actions, not only in the eyes of the community but also in the eyes of nature. She looked upon herselfas a figure of Guilt intruding into the haunts of innocence. But all the while she was making a distinction where there was no difference. She had been made to break an accepted social law, but no law known to the environment in which she fancied herself such an anomaly. Her mind was tormented by 'a crowd of moral hobgoblins' which had been put there by her exposure to Christianity and which perverted her natural inclinations.Apart from fierce Alec and hypocritical Clare, it is the weakness of her character that leads to her sad fate. Tess was able to fight against the unfairness of the society. She could face various difficulties in life bravely, yet she couldn’t extricate herself from traditional moral principles. She was aware that she was the victim of social violence and moral principles. On the other hand, though she dared to beat back the unjustness, she couldn’t break with traditional morality completely.Ⅴ. ConclusionA lot of reflection was left by Hardy through his creation of Tess’s tragedy. Tess was a strong woman throughout the novel. She stood up for herself and refused to crumble under pressure. It is true Tess should deserve respect because of enduring a great deal of pain. Yet, for her tragedy, it is not proper to blame solely on the unequal society that Tess lived in.The pessimistic atmosphere enveloped the novel and always made people depressed. Thomas Hardy dared to offend the optimism of the capitalistic world, therefore, he was attacked by critics, though in this novel we can find some colors of fatalism. There is also bitter and sharp criticism and even open challenge of the irrational, hypocritical and unfair Victorian institutions, conventions and morals which strangle the individual will and destroy natural human emotions and relationships. The conflicts between the traditional and the modern, between the old rural value of respectability and honesty and the new utilitarian commercialism, between the old, false social moral and the natural human passion, etc. were all closely set in a realistic background true to the very time and the very place. On the one hand, his heroine, Tess in her desperate struggle for personal family’s happiness, was all vividly and realistically depicted. On the other hand, Hardy presented a vivid realistic picture of the English society by exposing the cruelty, hypocrisy and other evils of the upper classes, and by showing the misery and suffering of the poor.Tess was just a victim of economic oppression and social injustice. In a word, the capitalist society was responsible for the misery and sufferings of the poor people. In capitalist society, women were eager to break away from the bondageinflicted on them by the society, yet they found that the society made it difficult for them to realize their desire. Tess was a victim of the environment. She was ruined by the bourgeois society. (sexual discrimination; wide gap between the rich and the poor) To be more exact, the disintegration (break up into small pieces) of English peasantry and the hypocritical moral standard of bourgeois society may be regarded as one cause of Tess’s destruction. Furthermore, through the analysis of the tragedy, the hypocrisy of law, religion, morality, ethics and marrying system are unfolded to the reader. By studying Tess’tragedy, we can better understand Tess comprehensively and objectively, which embodies the progressive significance of Hardy’s novel.Tess’ beautiful life has destroyed, and her tragedy is involved in the author’s pessimism fatalism with her personality, but these reasons all have direct contacts with capitalist society at that time. It is all sorts of reflection of the capitalist society. Her ruin is inevitable, and can’t be escaped in the capitalist society .Bibliography:(1)Thomas Hardy. Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

BOOK REPORT ABOUT TESSThe works of Thomas Hardy can be divided into three parts: Romances and Fantasies, Novels of Ingenuity, Novels of Character and Environment. The last part is the most famous and most important one ,which is also called Wessex novels. Tess is one of them.As we all know, most novels are in the background of Dorchester, the hometown of Hardy. However , what is strange is that Hardy uses the name of Wessex instead of the real name of his hometown. Why?We can view this question from two aspects. Oh the one hand , Wessex is an ancient name of a kingdom established by Anglo - Saxon in the British island dating back to the 5th century. Therefore ,it has a heavier sense of history . On the other hand , mainly from Hardy’s perspective, he wants to express a burning desire to bring a forgotten ancient kingdom to life, to revive the old lifestyle and to reconstruct the morals by virtue of the name. In a certain degree, Hardy is trying using this name to convey his strong dissatisfaction to the reality. The most remarkable personality in Hardy is pessimism. It’s said that Hardy doesn’t win the the Nobel Prize in Literature, mainly because his works include too much pessimism. We can’t find out whether it’s true or not, but it rightly reflects that pessimism plays quite an important part in Hardy and his works. So, if we want to know Hardy and his works better , the top priority is to understand this extreme pessimism. We can connectit with Hardy’s study experience in London. During that time ,all sorts of ideological trends prevailed in the society, such as Darwin's theory of evolution, Schopenhauer's philosophy of voluntarism, Huxley's Agnosticism and Muller’s freedom theory. Especially the second one, Schopenhauer's philosophy of voluntarism directly lead to the form of Hardy’s fatalism. He believes that everyone has fixed fate or destiny . Sometimes you have to suffer a lot for someone else’s fault. And you could do nothing but to stand it. Just like Tess, she is a typical product of Hardy’s fatalism .Although she is innocent, she suffered all her life for Alec’s fault with a miserable ending. In a word, all these does exert great influence on Hardy’s advanced ideas.Unfortunately, the reality in his hometown was totally falling behind. The traditional agricultural civilization were badly battered by modern industrial civilization. The striking comparison between his advanced ideas and cruel reality put him into a hopeless situation. He couldn’t see tomorrow at all . So, from this point, it is not so difficult for us to understand his fatal pessimism. And this is the biggest difference between Hardy and Dickens. Although they are both outstanding realistic writers ,Dickens is more optimistic. He still has the ability to see the light in the dark, giving the protagonist a happy ending after all kinds of suffering. While Hardy couldn’t see any hope at all. So almost all his works are tragedies.Binarism is a typical narritive style of Hardy. In the book of Tess, we can find it between the goodness in Angel Claire and the evil in Alec. What’s more, Angel himself is a paradox. Yes, he is the embodiment of virtues, trying to get rid of the chains of corrupt social ethics all the time. However, he doesn’t abandon them at all in his deep heart. It is he that gives Tess hope and love. It is also he that takes Tess’s hope away. Therefore, the binarism in Angel plays an important part in Tess’s tragedy. At the same time, we can find binarism in Alec, either. There is no doubt that he represents the dark side of human nature. He is the direct reason of Tess’s tragedy. Whereas, his love for Tess is genuine. Although he raped Tess, he never thought that he would abandon her. Instead, he asked Tess to be his wife. So, he was never just playing with Tess. It is always he that gives Tess and her family a hand. It is he that is always beside Tess. The dual character in Alec is another reason for Tess’s tragedy.。

Hardy is an outstanding realist in English literature. H e himself classified his novel into three groups: Romances and Fantasies, Novels of Ingenuity, and Novels of Character and Environment. Of the three the last group is the most outstanding, and most of his better known novels belong to it, including Tess of D’Urbervilles. It tells the tragic story of a beautiful country girl, Tess Durbeyfield. She is a pure woman. In her life, there are three persons who mainly affect her. The first one is Alec D‟Urbervilles, the son of a rich merchant who has bought his title into the class of gentry. He rapes Tess and his appearance changes Tess‟s all. The second person is Angel Clare, a clergyman‟s son, who has broken with the traditions of his family to seek the ideal in a quiet life. He falls in love with Tess and they are engaged to each other. But their marriage breaks up then, and their result is miserable. The third one is Tess herself. Besides, the bourgeois society and the family ruin her life largely. This essay aims to study how Tess is suffered with such a great tragedy, and at the same time, it is going to make more analysis of these causes and factors. Keywords: Thomas Hardy;Tess of D’Urbervilles; three persons; factorsContentChapter 1 Description of the figure (1)Chapter 2 Analysis of the Main Causes (2)2.1 The Social Tragedy (2)2.2 The Direct Reason (3)2.3 The Spiritual Destruction of Traditional Ethics (4)Chapter 3 Other Reasons (7)3.1 The Characteristic Elements (7)3.2 The Fate Tragedy (8)Chapter 4 Conclusion (10)Reference (11)Acknowledgement (12)A Study of Cause of Tess‟s TragedyChapter 1 Description of the figureTess is the heroine of this book, who is a modern woman idealized by Hardy. In Hardy‟s ideal world, Tess is the symbol of beauty and the incarnation of love. She represents virtues of Wessex people: beautiful, pure, kind-hearted, plain, charitable and tolerant. She dares to sacrifice herself and has good wishes to the future. Her special virtue is that she loves people and trusts them. Women‟s gentleness and valiance melt together in her heart. She has beautiful temperament, strong willing and intense emotions. Besides, as the same as Wessex people, she is quite sincere, faithful, natural and pure. She tries her best to seek for her aspiration without the help of marriage, and pursue freedom herself. When she works at D‟Urbervilles, she wants to solve her family problem with her work and efforts. However, when she finds that she‟s cheated and seduced by Alec, she leaves there firmly and decisively. Tess‟s soul is pure and her morality is noble. But facing the bourgeoisie morality, she is regarded as the model of immorality, the example of lewdness and she is the evil incarnation that encroach the pure territory.Hardy‟s opinion and the social prejudice are diametrically opposed to each other. He criticizes the hypocritical moral standards through the image of Tess. Hardy firmly believes that moral purity lies in a person‟s heart, not a temporary mist ake, so in Hardy‟s opinion, Tess is an exactly pure woman. On the contrary, the society sticks to the traditional customs and believes that the temporary mistake is a irreparable depravation, so Tess is a sinner who is guilty of adultery. Hardy thinks that there none perfect person in the world and a person‟s perfection reflects is the understanding of life, love for life, rich emotions and faithful love. Only from such perfection can produce the real pure. Hardy strictly criticizes Clare who represents the bourgeois people‟s spiritual shackles. However, it is just such a kind of ethics that crystallizes the social conventions, which has a divine nature, is the unwritten law and regarded as legitimate things forever. Tess is just a victim of this kind of world delusions. Through Tess‟s tragedy, Hardy reveals the hypocrisy and evil of the ethics, and exposes the brutal content. Chapter 2 Analysis of the Main Causes2.1 The Social TragedyThere is no doubt that the first cause of Tess‟s tragedy is society. Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of Hardy‟s Wessex Novels, which gives the background of his hometown Wessex. In the mid 19th century, the rural areas are invaded by the British capitalist industrial civilization, so is Hardy‟s hometown. It is so badly affect ed that the patriarchal society disintegrates quickly and those individual peasants suffer from unemployment and poverty. Confronting with consequences brought by the industrial civilization, Hardy, as a humanist, is strongly hurt in his heart. He emotionally loves the ancient patriarchal civilization, and deeply detests that demolishment which the industrial civilization has made to human‟s harmonious life. The awareness of social tragedy in Hardy‟s novel exists for the social background at that time. It s tarts from the conflicts between individual civilization and patriarchal civilization, and from the panorama to the local, from the surface to the point, it gives an objective description. Besides, it comprehensively expresses people‟s living troubles. In Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Hardy gives a panoramic picture of the impact of industrial civilization on the country, and regards Tess‟s family as a microcosm of individual peasants, and deeply shows the throes in their physical plight. The social tragedy is caused by the conflicts between people and social environment. Tess lives in the Victorian age which British capitalism invades the countryside even poisons the social atmosphere. Although she is beautiful, hard-working and kind-hearted, she still stands in the low status of a weak woman, and lives in extreme poverty and heavy burdens. As a labor and a farm worker with no rights and money, Tess suffers from different kinds of oppressions and humiliations, not economic, powerful and physical ones, but also spiritual, religious and moral ones. Her tragedy contributes to the era. At the same time, Alec and Clare, on behalf of two different social forces, directly create Tess‟s social tragedy. The era that Tess lives in is 1880s. At that time, not only does British capitalism develop in the city, but also it sprouts in the countryside. With the invasion of capitalism, the British countryside which is under the control of patriarchal tends to collapse, and the individual farmers suffer from bankruptcy and poverty. As a daughter of a poor farmer and a wage-earner, Tess‟s fate is inevitably tragic. Therefore,A Study of Cause of Tess‟s TragedyTess‟s tragedy is brought about by the era and society.2.2 The Direct ReasonThe second reason for Tess‟s tragedy, which is the direct reason, is the persecution of violence, forces, laws and the whole state. The main representative of such a violence and forces is Alec D‟Urbervilles.Tess grows up in a picturesque countryside. Though her family is in great poverty, she still lives brightly and cheerfully. She loves life and has courage to face different difficulties. Besides, she dares to sacrifice herself for the whole family. She is not willing when asked to “claim kin”, but finally she decides to go with no choice.Alec‟s father is a rich merchant, and he bu ys his title to the class of gentry. At the first sight of Tess, Alec exposes his lust for Tess. Because of innocence and lack of experience, Tess is seduced by Alec, and returns home pregnant and disgraced. Then a girl‟s chastity and happiness are destroy ed. After that, with the help of a clergyman, Alec tries to repent and be a good man. Later, he becomes a clergyman, but decades of bad habits haven‟t been totally eradicated. When he happens to meet Tess again, his evil regenerates, which turns all his previous labor to nothing. However, Tess understands clearly when she sees the man dressing as clergyman, “I can‟t believe in such sudden things!I feel indignant with you for talking to me like this, when you know - when you know what harm you've done me! You, and those like you, take your fill of pleasure on earth by making the life of such as me bitter and black with sorrow; and then it is a fine thing, when you have had enough of that, to think of securing your pleasure in heaven by becoming converted! Out upon such - I don't believe in you. I hate it!” Tess exposes Alec‟s pretense of converting to the religion, and Alec‟s behavior also shows the writer‟s doubt about the religious power. After then, Alec continues pestering Tess. He calls Tess stupid wife, and cheats her that her husband will never come back again. What‟s more, he even threatens that, “Remember, my lady, I was your master once! I will be your master again, If you are any man‟s wife, you are mine! ” However, Tess would rather stay in the far m, enduring cruel exploitation and withstanding heavy work than surrender herself to Alec and accept his help. Nevertheless, her father dies and the whole family are evicted and thrown out on the street. To support her mother and her younger sisters and brothers, Tess is therefore forced to go back to Alec to be his mistress. Since then, her happiness is ruined completely.Tess is the victim of the power and violence. The reason for Alec‟s daring to do all太湖学院学士学位论文all kinds of evil and whatever he wants is not only the money and power. What‟s more important is that he is protected by the law and the whole bourgeois state. The society and law think that people who insult and persecute Tess are justified, but the persecuted Tess is guilty. During Tess‟s lifetime, she h as to resign herself to adversity, and endure humiliation. She also can‟t defend herself. When she is to be in defense of herself, she is on the verge of death. At last, Tess becomes the sacrifice of the bourgeois state. Her tragic experience represents the social injustice, the inhumanity and hypocrisy of the bourgeois law.2.3 The Spiritual Destruction of Traditional EthicsThe spiritual destruction of traditional ethics to Tess is another main reason for Tess‟s tragedy. If we regard what those forces and laws have done to Tess as a persecution, the traditional ethics is even an invisible and horrible spiritual devastation. After seduced by Alec, Tess wouldn‟t like to surrender to him, being his mistress and instrument for enjoyment. Her self-esteem decides strongly to leave Alec and go back to her parents. However, the secular opinion and traditional morality shoot her down offensively and intensely. In order to avoid human and public voice, she doesn‟t like to go out unless it is dark that she just goes inside the forest. When she feels most lonely, she seems to be the least lonely, because she can experience a spiritual freedom at such a moment. Tess is a brave woman. She accepts the status of an unchaste woman and swallows the insult. After her child‟s d eath, to avoid the public and unhappiness, she leaves the hometown again with good vision for the future. Then she gets a job as a milkmaid in Crick‟s milk factory, where she meets Clare and enjoys a short but beautiful time.Clare is a man who is quite different from Alec. He is an enlightened intellectual, not as vulgar as his two brothers. Although he is born in a clergyman family, he would rather be a farmer than a clergyman. Clare despises class prejudice and hierarchy, and he is tired of flourishing city life. Nevertheless, he is willing to do farm work in the countryside. He tries his best to grasp different kinds of agricultural techniques, and does heavy work as other farmer workers to realize his dream of being a great farmer. In the embrace of nature, Clare stays together with the innocent farm girl everyday, which makes him feel the simplicity of rural life. He becomes longing for a more natural, simple and clean living, for which he doesn‟t want to marry a wealthy lady but a farm girl. All these show the advanced and open side of Clare‟s thoughts. Indealing with the issues of women and love, he and Alec are widely divergent. He is gentle and graceful to women. He is also serious and earnest to love. He thinks that if one loves another, he should be honest and responsible, which shows his noble side. Just because of Clare‟s shining side and persistent pursuit of Tess, Tess defeats herself and changes her mind. She agrees to his proposal and falls in love with him fanatically. However, their love starts with tragic elements. Clare loves Tess, but his love is not as selfless and sincere as Tess‟s. His love is mostly close to the reason. Thus, in his eyes, Tess is “Daughter of Nature”, a symbol of purity and a perfect masterpiece. In his heart, there‟s no one else who is as pure and sweet as Tess. Even so, once Tess honestly confesses her past humiliation, the image in Clare‟s heart collapses. He feels deceived and his life and world change wholly. He can‟t accept the fact and repeats, “The woman I have been loving is not you, but another woman in your shape.” Such a kind of rational love not only strangles his truthful love, but also ruins Tess‟s happiness. This is one reason for Clare and Tess‟s tragedy. Another important reason is the deep-rooted trad itional morality in Clare‟s heart. Clare himself has once been dissolute, while he gets Tess‟s forgiveness. But he can‟t forgive Tess who ought to be an innocent person. He has fight with traditional opinions and class prejudice, but incompletely, his soul is still affected by the class and society. He says, “I thought any man would thought that by giving up all ambition to win a wife with social standing, with fortune, with knowledge of the world, I should secure rustic innocence as surely as I should secure pink cheeks; but, however, I am no man to reproach you, and I will not.”, which expresses that he looks at a woman‟s “purity” from a traditional concept of charity. Clare is not only pity-sympathy for Tess, but also ignorant to Tess‟s deep love. He abandons Tess ruthlessly and puts Tess in sadness and disappointment. He extinguishes Tess‟s hope that love has renewed in her heart. If Alec D‟Urbervilles ruins Tess‟s body, then Angel Clare destructs Tess‟s spirit. The lost of charity makes Tess heart beat, but it can not extinguish her lust for living and hope for future, while the desertion by lover demolishes her spiritual support and courage. At the first time, Tess is seduced and humiliated by Alec because of her innocence and poverty. But she is forced to go back to Alec for the second time because of Clare‟s cruelty and grimness, which deepens Tess‟s misfortune. After Clare abandons Tess, he leaves for Brazil. Since he meets kinds of difficulties, he realizes what the real life is and how stupid he is to stick to such atraditional morality. He knows that he has not only destroyed Tess but also himself. Because of his inner remorse and thought for Tess, he decides to go back to look for Tess. However, Tess‟s happiness and life have been destroyed earlier. His coming back just deepens Tess‟s misfortune, and make Tess feel more painful and disappointed. Tess feels that she is deceived again when her husband comes back. With fury, she kills Alec and revenges for her long-time pain, and humiliation. She protests boldly for the injustice and torment, which not only prove her love to Clare, but also her innocence. In this book, the villains are punished, but the heroine‟s tragedy doesn‟t transform to comedy. Her revenge on Alec doesn‟t have an effect on the soci ety, and the social tragedies are still rampant. What‟s more, Tess herself is hanged at last. Tess‟s death is the focus and concentration of social tragedies.Chapter 3 Other Reasons3.1 The Characteristic ElementsIn the premise of the social tragedy, Tess‟s tragedy is also a characteristic tragedy. The cause is not only objective but also subjective. That is to say. It‟s not just external but internal. We all know that there are many conflicts in the world. The conflicts between human and nature is shallowest, but those conflicts among humans are deeper, which includes conflicts between people and society, people and people. What‟s more, the conflicts between human and themselves are deepest, which are self-contradictions and self-confli cts of people‟s internal character, and such conflicts can lead to characteristic tragedy and psychological tragedy. When talking about those different kinds of social causes, we should also point out Tess‟s reasons for pain and misfortune. Tess is brave t hat she dares to fight against traditional morality and seek her happiness, but also she can not get herself out of that traditional morality, which also shows the weak side of her character. She is badly hurt by the public opinions and traditional morality, at the same time; she should look at herself clearly with moral standards, which makes her tragedy sadder and deeper. Tess knows that she is the victim of violence and she is innocent. However, when criticized by villagers, she thinks she is guilty. She is threatened by those customs and traditional morality. She also regards herself as an incarnation of evil. So it must lead to her inner self-torture and self-condemnation, which deepen her pain and misfortune. As Tess measures her innocence in a traditional way, she can not forget her shame forever. Several years later, most of villagers have forgotten her misfortune, but Tess herself still feels sad. In order to forget her past, she leaves her family. However, she then meets Clare, whose love makes her feel happy. Nevertheless, when experiencing happiness, she feels more horrible, uneasy and shamed, which shows that Tess can‟t forget her past, and she can‟t get rid of the spiritual burdens. She seems to be born with guilt, and is doomed to suffer from torture and pain forever. Such kind of …”guilty” makes her guilty and self-blamed. Even when abandoned by Clare heartlessly, she still thinks that it‟s her sin. Therefore, when she suffers from the persecution of public voice and traditional morality, she is also subjected to her moral ethics even blames herself mercilessly. When she boldly fights against traditional morality, she is still its defender. From a deeper lever, this just shows the persecutionof traditional morality to Tess‟s humanity and heart, which make the book‟s power more forceful and Tess‟s tragedy more stirring. The destruction of Tess‟s sublime character is the result of social elements, but it can not be inseparable with Tess‟s inner characteristic conflicts. Consequently, in the premise of social tragedy, Tess‟s tragedy is also her characteristic tragedy. So her tragedy is much more profound and more moving.3.2 The Fate TragedyTess‟s tragedy is not only a social tragedy, a characteristic tragedy, but also a fate tragedy. The fate trage dy originates in ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks can‟t understand people‟s misfortune in a scientific way. They explain people‟s fate with the original religious concept that the fate depends on God and people can not get rid of it. From Hardy‟s view of fate, Tess‟s tragedy is the performance of those limitations of Hardy‟s pessimistic view of the society and the world. Hardy‟s pessimism is a product of the era. Hardy‟s novels are written in the age of the 1880s and 1890s. In the period of the Victoria, the British Empire begins to decline. As the monopoly capital takes the place of the free competition, it drags English to the abyss of crisis. As a realist, Hardy can describe a vivid picture of reality. However, as a thinker, Hardy does not know the discipline of social development. In his opinion, the real crisis and insurmountable contradiction are mysterious and unpredictable universal will, or human beings who are regarded as all kinds of evils. Hardy does believe neither the eternal preaching of the capitalist bourgeois, nor the covering of real contradictions and crisis between religion and traditional morality. Confronting with the powerful universe, he thinks that human beings are so insignificantly small creatures that they are affected by the fate and are quite weak when in conflict with the environment. As a result, the awareness of capitalize crisis contribute to Hardy‟s pessimism and fatalism. In Hardy‟s novels, many occasional misfortunes happen to those heroes when they are close to happiness, because of the fate or the universe will.Tess is born in a poor family with seven sisters. This has determined her tough and miserable life. As the oldest daughter, Tess has to help her father because her father often drinks very much. However, the God of fate seems to torment her. Occasionally, when she is driving a lorry, it collides with a coach and the old horse dies because of the accident, which has constituted the only source of the family income. Just at the time, her father learns that he is a descendant of the ancient noble D‟Urbervilles family, and then sends Tess to “claim kin” with the distant relative. Tessis not willing to go, but as she is guilty for the dead horse, she has to go to Alec‟s farm against her will. There, she is seduced by Alec. Then, the unlucky girl leaves for Talbothays (塔布篱) because of the sad experience. She desires to live a peaceful life but she meets Clare and falls in love with him. She tries to suppress her love for Clare and refuse his proposal. However, the fate and love make her promise to marry Clare. Tess does not want to deceive Clare, so she writes to him to tell her past life. But it seems that the fate likes to make fun of her. The letter is stuffed into the carpet of Clare‟s room, so Clare does not know her confession before their marriage. Then at the night of marriage, Tess is cast off by Clare when he knows the fact. After that, Tess suffers from disappointment again. She leaves for Emmineter (爱姆寺) to look for Clare‟s parents. She doesn‟t find them but hear Clare‟s brother‟s harsh words. Tess wouldn‟t like to wait and decides to go back to Flintcomb-Ash (棱窟槐). Nevertheless, she happens to meet Alec again on the way to Flintcomb-Ash. Just at the time, her husband doesn‟t come back, and her father dies. What‟s more, her whole family suffers from difficulty and distress. Helplessly, Tess is trapped into Alec‟s snare with his lure and intimidation. Afterwards, Clare wakes up and decides to come back to England, but after he knows something about Tess‟s current situation, he leaves again with melancholy. At this moment, Tess is so disappointed that she can‟t endure Alec‟s mock, and murders him in a fit of despair. After hiding with Clare in a forest for a few days, Tess falls into the claws of laws. She is arrested, tried and hanged.Tess‟s whole life is full of drama. It seems that fate likes to play jokes with her at each period of her life. Because of occasional elements, the fate has pushed her into a tragic ending step by step. In addition, there are many mysterious elements in this novel, such as, the mysterious lorry of the D‟Urbervilles, the frightening cross-road signs. All this shows that Tess is doomed to a tragic life. Tess‟s tragedy has many contingencies. Every occasional turn has made her fall into a deeper abyss. There‟s no doubt that such a kind of contingency is the intersection of society and nature. But the series of inevitability is the crystallization of Hardy‟s idea and trajectory o f his pessimistic fatalism. This is just the limitation of the author‟s ideas. What‟s more, it‟s another means to expose and criticize those social darkness.Chapter 4 ConclusionTo sum up, Tess‟s tragedy is connected with social elements, and also has something to do with her character and the author‟s pessimistic fatalism. What‟s more, all these causes are directly related to the bourgeois society and Tess‟s tragedy is the reflection of it. At the end of the story, the writer writes sarcastically. “‟Justice‟ was done, and the President of the Immortals, in Aeschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess”. So Tess is doomed to be destroyed, and she can not get rid of such a bourgeois society. The whole story is filled with a feeling of dismal foreboding and doom. Fateful circumstances and tragic coincidences abound in the book. These do not, however, eclipse the chief message of the truthful portrayal of the tragic lot of a poor country girl ruined by the bourgeois society, which is responsible for the miseries and sufferings of the small people whom Hardy describes in his book. Just as Soviet literary critic Alnwick Manchester says, “The real reasons for Tess‟s destruction are the reality, the heroine‟s nature, the dispossession, and the social prevailin g conventions. All these determine the poor lady‟s miserable fate.” It just points that the origin of Tess‟s tragedy is the bourgeois society.Reference[1]Thomas Hardy. The Pure natural flower--The tentative Analysis of Tess’s tragedyThomas Hardy is a famous critical realistic writer at the turn of the 19th century. As the industrial movement swept England in the 19th century, many farmers and agriculture workers found themselves in devastation. People lost their homes, jobs, and the simple lifestyles . Thomas Hardy was very concerned with the loss of beautiful rural land during the industrial development. His main belief system was founded upon the ideal that nature is the core of all existence .Tess of the D’Urbervilles which was published in 1891 is the most influential masterpiece of all his works . In this novel , Hardy demonstrates his deep sense of moral sympathy for England’s lower class , particularly for rural woman. Under Hardy’s pen, the heroine Tess is created as an attractive and warm-hearted pure woman, who has the quality of endurance andself-sacrifice. However, the life of this pure woman is tragic. The causes of Tess’s tragedy have been concerned all the time.Who killed Tess? What is responsible for her tragic ftate?First ,the Social Causes.Tess lives in the late 19th century, in which the cruel capitalist exploitation has ruined the English countryside severely, Wessx is not immuned from the destruction. Capitalism brings a great harm to this old, rural and agricultural life of the place. The family of Tess is no exception. Their life is so hard that Tess has to work under capitalist exploitation and oppression for many times. It is under the capitalist exploitation that Tess is seduced and ruined badly in her body.Tess lives in the Victorian era which capitalism invade the rural region. In the capitalist society, law is served for the capitalist class. Farmers are at the bottom of the society, they have never equal rights as the capitalist class. Alec ,the representative of capitalist power and violence dares to do what he desires, not only because he has money and power, but also because his evil behavior is protected by the capitalist law and rules.Obviously, she is the victim of the unjust, hypocritical law.The highest virtue of the Victorian woman is sexual purity, and adultery is the worst f all possible sins. Her dress concealed her whole body except the hands and face, and to show an ankle or a shoulder is considered improper .The sexual morals are rooted in people’s rationalminds: when either man or woman engaged in sexual lapses, the former would be forgiven, but the later would be condemned. The whole society turns against Tess .Second, the Direct Murder —Alec and the accessory —Angel Clare In the novel, as a bourgeoisie gilded youth, Alec is the vicious incarnation, directly causing Tess’s tragic life. Alec is a symbol of evil, he can escape legal sanctions , unaffected. He, who represents a larger moral principle rather than a real individual man, symbolizes the base forces of life that drive a person away from moral perfection and greatness. Therefore, it is Alec who kills Tess directly without mercy. It can be said Alec represented evil force is the direct reason to cause Tess’s tragedy, whereas the traditional ethics morality survives on Angel derivates Tess is invisible, and much severer spiritual injures. On Angel’s body, not only has the enlightened thought, but also remains the traditional moral prejudice. It is Angel who kills Tess indirectly but more cruelty. He is educated, reserved, subtle, sad, differing. He looks down on the material distinction of rank and wealth. But,on the wedding night, Tess tells him all her past with Alec, thinking that Angel would forgive her as she does, but she is deserted.Although he claims to be independent judgment opinion, once the thing is very crucial, he is still upholding the decadent bourgeois social customs and moral hypocrisy.Alec d'Urberville destroys Tess physically, while Angel Clare makes a fatal blow to Tess's mental. The loss of chastity does not kill all Tess's desire for love and hope, but Angel's desertion and her hopelessness of love for Angel make her lose courage to live. Because of her innocence and helplessness, she is seduced. But because of Clare's moral callousness, she is forced to comeback to Alec for the second time. Clare's moral callousness completely comes from the cruel social conventions and moral standards of that timeThird, the reason is Tess herself.Tess’s tragedy not only results from the external causes, but also the internal ones. And only via the internal causes, can the external causes become operative. The tragedy that rusults from the conflict between man and himself is the tragedy of character. Tess’s tragedy is the tragedy of character as well.Tess is a fresh country girl who is full of the sense of the of respnsibility for her family because of her father’s laziness and mother’s siple mindedness. The horse’s death makes her think she is responsible for this accident and she must earn money to support her poor family. On the one hand, Tess struggles bravely against her destiny and the conventional morality. She desires for happiness and true love. On the other hand, she can not completely get rid of social conventions and moral standards of the day, which makes her believe that she has to pay for what she has sinned. She yields to the arrangement of the fate. The latter is the weakness in her characterIn a word, through the above analysis, it is obvious that the poverty, Alec's wickedness, Angel's conventional ideas, Tess's character as well as Hardy's fatalism are the direct causes of Tess's tragedy. But these direct causes are deeply rooted in the cruel social environment: the impoverished peasant, the unjust law and cruel convention. So we can draw a conclusion that the social environment is the real and root cause of Tess's tragedy. Tess’s tragic fate is not only of herself, but also of the time she lives in.From the tragic story of Tess’short life, I can see in a deeper sense that it is the evil capitalism that has ruined her. Living in a society overwhelmed by capitalist Law, and religion, Tess, a poor peasant, inevitably leads a tragic life and finally goes to her collapse. No matter what happened to Tess, she is always pure in my eyes, like a Pure natural flower.。
