But it is stillwidely practiced, with the groom’s family demanding even more money after marriage, leading to mental and physical annoyance that can drive the woman to suicide.“The Angry Brides game is our way of throwing a spotl ight on the nuisance(陋习)of dowry. ”said Ram Bhamidi, senior vice president and head of online marketing for Shaadi. com, a matrimonial(婚姻的)website with two million members.“According to a 2007 study, there is a dowry-related death every four hours in India, we condemn this and have consistently run campaigns on social media to help create awareness of the issue”.The name of the app, available on the group’s home page, is a spinoff from the globally popular“Angry Birds”game. Louis have identified a gene that is required for proper development of the mouse ear, providing clues to deafness. In humans, this gene is known as FGF20. “When we inactivated(阻止活动)FGF20, we saw they were alive and healthy, ”says senior author David M. Ornitz, Professor of Developmental Biology. “But then we figured out that they had absolutely no ability to hear. ”The results show that disabling the gene causes a loss of outer hair cell, a special type of sensory cell in the ear responsible for amplifying(扩大)sound. While about two-thirds of the outer hair cells were missing in mice without FGF20, the number of inner hair cells, the cells responsible for transmitting the amplified signals to the brain, appeared normal.“This is the first evidence that inner and outer hair cells develop independen tly of one another, ”says first author Sung-Ho, PhD, research associate. “This is important because most age-related deafness and hearing loss caused by noise are due to the loss of outer hair cells. ”As such, Ornitz and Huh believe that FGF20 signaling will be a required step toward the goal of regenerating outer hair cells in mammals, incapable of hearing restoration. The FGF20 gene stands for one member of a family of proteins known as fibroblast(纤维组织母细胞)growth factors. In general, members of this family are known to play important and broad roles in embryonic(胚胎的)development, tissue maintenance and wound healing.Ornitz and his colleagues found that FGF20 signaling must occur on or before the 14th day of the embryo’s development to produce a normal inner ear. Even if FGF20 signaling occurred on the 15th day or later, the inner ear still did not develop properly. “In mice, the cells that can become outer hair cells must be exposed to the FGF20 protein at an early stage, ”Ornitz says. “After embryonic day 14, it doesn’t matter if they see the protein. It’s too late for them to become outer hair cells. ”46. After FGF20 was inactivated in mice, they.A. were not able to walk any moreB. didn’t appear abnormal immediatelyC. died without any symptoms soonD. saw an increase of outer hair cells47. According to the study, inner hair cells.A. are not affected by the absence of FGF20B. are responsible for regenerating soundC. will be missing if there isn’t FGF20D. have only been found in mice so far48. The underlined word“regenerating”in Para. 5 can be replaced by“”.A. reducingB. fightingC. preventingD. reproducing49. What can we learn from the passage?A. Mammals are capable of restoring hearing themselves.B. Age-related deafness may be cured with FGF20 signaling.C. Most deafness among people is caused by the loss of inner hair cells.D. To generate outer hair cells, cells must meet the FGF20 protein on day14.50. What is the passage mainly about?A. Why people become deaf.B. How to cure deafness.C. A new discovery about the gene FGF20.D. How the ear works.PartⅢWriting(45 marks)Section A(10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Renewable energy is natural energy that can be used repeatedly and will never run out.Renewable energy comes from natural processes. Renewable energy has various forms. It can come directly from the sun, the ocean, or heat deep within the earth.Renewable energy is also known as green or clean energy, because the process of complete change does not cause the emission(排放)of greenhouse gas, which is harmful to the environment.Renewable energy sources include solar energy, wind energy, geothermal(地热的)energy(from the inside of the earth), ocean energy, hydropower(水力发电), natural gas, tide power, wave power and so on.Renewable energy can be used without using it up. There is no greenhouse gas emission, no pollution emission—no contribution to global warming. It is healthy and environmentally friendly. All forms of renewable energy are expensive. This is because it is a new technology and has extremely large capital cost. But as time goes on and technologies develop, renewable energy generally gets cheaper, while mineral fuels generally get more expensive.Renewable energy can be used for power generation, hot water, space heating, transport fuels and so on. But it is difficult to generate the quantities of electricity that are as large as those produced traditionally. Soif we use renewable energy, we will need to build more energy facilities. The best solution is to have a balance of many different power sources.Renewable energy often relies on the weather for its source of power. Hydro generators need rain to fill dams to supply flowing water and solar collectors need sunshine to collect heat and make electricity. This can be unpredictable.Section B(10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion. Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment.Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress. A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as their fathers and grandfathers used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did. The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull. What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats for example—In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example. There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World WarⅡ, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter and the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the“untidy”look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses.61. What do the fashion magazines or TV advertisements claim to bring us? (No more than 2 words)(2 marks)____________________________________________________________ _______62. Why does the writer take President Kennedy as an example? (No more than 14 words)(3 marks)____________________________________________________________ ________63. What does the writer try to explain by talking about short skirts? (No more than 8 words)(2 marks)____________________________________________________________ ________64. Why are jeans so popular according to the writer? (No more than 10 words)(3 marks)____________________________________________________________ ________Section C(25 marks)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below in Chinese.(2013·衡阳模拟) 高中生活即将结束, 大学生活也将拉开帷幕, 你将面临新的学习和生活环境, 请写一篇英语短文, 谈谈你打算如何安排你的大学生活。

Harvard researchers have created a tough,low-cost,biodegradable(可生物降解的) material inspired by insects’ hard outer shells. The material’s inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp(虾) shells and proteins produced from silk,is called “shrilk”.It isthin, clear, flexible and strong.A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability.Plastic’s toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and ’60s.Decades later, however, plastic’s very durability(耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags,or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料),and so will enrich the soil.Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said.Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab.The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet,so they’re exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They’re also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They’re even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers,to give it new properties. (2012·湖南,C) 66.Paragraph 1 of the passage is mainly about shrilk’s ________.A.remarkable design B.interesting nameC.major features D.basic elements答案 C解析段落大意题。

How would Podell promote her project in New York?
When did she become disabled?(No more than 8 words) When she was ten years old.或 In 1993.。 He went to Beijing University. There he found his interests in biology. 题干:Where did he find his interests in biology?(No more than 8 words) [分析] 原文中的 there 指代的是 Beijing University。问 句以 where 开头所以答案为 In Beijing University.。
Having worked as a full time teacher and now as an adolescent advisor,Podell believes that talking things out is important in the decisionmaking process. Sometimes, people walk around all day, keeping their problems in their own head and thinking about them in the same way.Podell simply tries to provide people with perspective. I asked if there is a future plan for the Free Advice Project.Podell said she would like to promote it to each public space in New York, which would be carried out by various volunteers across the city.

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water.A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater.Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺).Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States,a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home.To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day.Wash it only once a day.Run your dishwasher(洗碗机) only when it is full.Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away. (2013·安徽,B) 60.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?A.Using river water.B.Throwing batteries away.C.Paving parking lots.D.Throwing rubbish into lakes.

She was one of the most beloved singers of the postwar era. Take her The Tennessee Waltz for example, it sold more than 10 million copies and was her biggest hit.Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page originally dreamed of a career in commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to performing on her own 15minute progra m.At age 20, Page was discovered by bigband leader Jack Rael, who quit his job to become her manager. In 1948, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Records and two years later enjoyed her first hit record. She stayed with Mercury for the next 14 years and recorded hit after hit including With My Eyes Wide Open, I'm Dreaming and Old Cape Cod.Her last hit was Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, recorded for the Bette Davis' movie of the same name. And then, there was Doggie in the Window. The creative tune was a huge hit, but with its repeated barking sounds and silly lyrics(歌词), the song has been used by many people as an example of all that was wrong with pop music in the early 1950s.Throughout the 1950s, Patti Page made regular appearances on television variety shows and in 1957 she was chosen to host the musical program The Big Record. The following year, Page appeared in her own CBS television series, The Patti Page Show. She continued to record and perform into the 21st century, most recently releasing an album of songs for children, a Christmas record, and a new “best” of collection.Besides music, Patti Page did a bit of acting. 专题限时训练(十七) [人物型阅读理解](限时:25分钟)(一)Patti Page, the topselling female artist of the 1950s with more than 100 million records sold, died on January 3rd, 2013, when she was 86. She was one of the most beloved singers of the postwar era. Take her The Tennessee Waltz for example, it sold more than 10 million copies and was her biggest hit.Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page originally dreamed of a career in commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to performing on her own 15minute program. At age 20, Page was discovered by bigband leader Jack Rael, who quit his job to become her manager. She costarred with the Oscarwinning Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry, and also starred on stage in the musical play Annie Get Your Gun.1.According to the passage, Patti Page ________.A.wanted to be a singer as a childB.was born in a small town in 1927C.was known mainly for her acting skillsD.started her work as a TV program hostess2.According to the passage, which of her following recorded songs was criticized?A.Old Cape Cod.B.Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte.C.Doggie in the Window.D.With My Eyes Wide Open, I'm Dreaming.3.The Tennessee Waltz is mentioned in the passage in order to show that ________.A.Patti Page was a beloved singerB.Patti Page's songs were successfulC.Patti Page was the topselling female artistD.Patti Page was good at recording songs4.We can know from the passage that Patti Page ________.A.got to know Jack Rael in 1945B.left Mercury Records at the age of 35C.appeared in The Patti Page Show in 1957D.wrote many songs for children in her late life5.It is inferred from the passage that ________.A.Patti Page gave up singing in public in her late lifeB.Patti Page's gift in art began to be shown in her teensC.Patti Page's great success was due to her hard work and others' helpD.Patti Page was not only a successful singer but also a successful actress(二)American actor Johnny Depp can best be described as unconventional. From his early life, his path into acting and even in his choice of movie roles,we can see that Depp has seldom taken the easy road. His willingness to take risks and do the unexpected has made Depp one of the few Hollywood actors able to achieve huge commercial success while maintaining his artistic reputation.Born in 1963,Depp was somewhat troublesome as a youth, occasionally turning to petty crime and drugs. When his parents divorced in 1978,Depp dropped out of school against his mother's wishes and started a music band called the Kids.Although the band achieved some success, they were seldom able to make_ends_meet,with Depp often unable to pay his rent, sleeping rough on friends' sofas and even in his car.In 1983,the everoptimistic Depp and his new wife,Lori Anderson, moved to Hollywood California to further Depp's musical career. But life there continued to be a struggle and Depp was forced to take a job selling pens door to door to support his new family. His luck changed when Lori's exboyfriend, the famous actor Nicholas Cage, impressed by Depp's good looks and intelligence, suggested he become an actor and helped him get a small part in a movie.Several other minor movie roles—and a divorce from Lori—followed, before Depp got his big break three years later. He landed the leading role in the television series 21 Jump Street, playing a youthful undercover police officer. The hugely popular show turned Depp into a teenage heartthrob overnight. He appeared on the cover of countless magazines and was much sought after by movie producers, eager to exploit his popularity with teenage girls. But Depp left 21 Jump Street after three years, when it was at the height of its popularity, later admitting that he hated the show's unoriginal storylines and his “pretty boy” character. In the decade that followed,Depp rejected repeated offers of “pretty boy” roles in bigbudget Hollywood films.Instead he established himself as a serious, somewhat dark, peculiar performer, consistently selecting roles in smaller, independent films that surprise critics and audiences alike.Even in the movie that made Depp an international superstar,The Pirates of the Caribbean(2003),he was barely recognizable as Captain Jack Sparrow, the British, longhaired goldentoothed pirate(海盗).This and subsequent(随后的) hit movieshave placed Depp at the very top of the commercial film industry (with a paycheck of $20 million for each such movie) but he still continues to make the smaller, stranger films for which he is so greatly admired.1.As a youth,Depp could be described as a ________.A. serious criminalB. trouble makerC. drug addictD. successful musician2.The underlined expression “make ends meet” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”.A. get together after a showB. meet their audienceC. play to the endD. earn enough to live3.
