The Mona Lisa, the picture of a Florentine lady, has something of a magical effect. Everyone who has ever tried to draw a face knows that what we call its expression rests mainly two things: the corner of the mouth, and the corners of the eyes. Now it is exactly these parts which Leonardo has left indistinct on purpose by letting them fade into a soft shadow. That is why we never quite sure whether Mona Lisa is happy or sad when she looks at us. Her expression always seems to just escape us. It’s not only vagueness which produces the effect. There is much more behind it. If we look carefully at the picture, we can find that the two sides do not quite match. As a result, when we focus on the left side of the picture, the woman looks somehow taller than if we focus on the right side. And her face also seems to change with this change of position. Leonardo da Vinci produced a great work of art, for he knew exactly how far he could go. Look at the way in which he modeled the hand, or the sleeves with their small folds. Leonardo could be as hardworking as any of the ancient people in the patient observation of nature. He knew the magic which would put life into the colours spread by his magic brush.

Module 2 The Renaissance Section Ⅰ Introduction &Reading-Pre-readingShe is widely seen as proof that good looks can last for ever. But, at nearly500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa. The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum where it is housed.“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape” the museum said. Visitors have noticed changes but repairing th e world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the ltalianartist used and their current chemical state. Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted bythe mysteryof her smile.“It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “It's because direct vision (视觉) is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vincipainted the smile in shadows .”In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre. During World War ll, France hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.Section_ⅠIntroduction & Reading — Pre reading[原文呈现]The Renaissance ①For many people, the Renaissance means 14th to 16th century Italy, and the which took place there developments in art and architecture, music and literature y other, expresses which, perhaps more than an . Module 2 The RenaissanceA hidden portrait underneath (在……下面) the “Mona Lisa” has been discovered by a French scientist, who said he uncovered the image using reflective light technology. The digitally reconstructed image of the hidden portrait was presented at a press conference by scientist Pascal Cotte, who's been analyzing the Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece for over a decade. Cotte said he uncovered the image using a camera that took images of the painting under intense light. The hidden portrait showed a sitting figure that looks almost the same as the “Mona Lisa.” There are small but great differences. The sitter in the image appears to be looking to the side rather than directly at the viewer, and the sitter does not seem to have the smile that has attracted “Mona Lisa”viewers for over 500 years.Cotte also said that his findings challenged the widely accepted theory that the “Mona Lisa” is a painting of a real life Italian woman Lisa Gheradini in the 16th cent ury. “The results change our vision of Leonardo's masterpiece forever,” he said. “When I finished the reconstruction of Lisa Gherardini, I was in front of the portrait, and she is totally different to ‘Mona Lisa’ today. This is not the same woman.”In a re cent documentary, art historian, Andrew GrahamDixon, said he studied historical documents linked to the “Mona Lisa” alongside Cotte's findings and came to the same conclusion as Cotte.“I think the new discoveries are like a huge stone thrown into the still water of art history,”GrahamDixon said.“They disturb everything that we thought that we knew about the ‘Mona Lisa’.There may be some reluctance (不情愿) on the part of the authorities to think about changing the title of the painting because that's what we're talking about. It's ‘Goodbye, Mona Lisa.’ She is somebody else.”The Louvre Museum declined to comment on the findings, saying it was not a part of the scientific team that studied the painting. Other art historians remain doubtful about the claims that Cotte's findings cou ld prove the “Mona Lisa” was someone else rather than Lisa Gheradini.Section_ⅠIntroduction & Reading —Prereading[原文呈现]The Renaissance①For many people, the Renaissance means 14th to 16th century Italy, and the developments in art and architecture, music and literature which took place there at that time②.
