)On March 13th, as commuters(每日往返上班者)streamed out of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus,a gothic revival masterpiece(哥特式复兴建筑——贾特拉帕蒂·希瓦吉终点站)in Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, they were confronted with temperatures approaching40°C, nearly7°C above normal for the time of year. The city is in the midst of a debilitating heatwave, its 13th in the past five decades, nearly half of which occurred in the past 15 years. Mumbai’s average temperature has increased by over 1°C in that period.Had those commuters crossed the street from the station and entered the city’s grand headquarters that day, they might have found cause for optimism. That afternoon politicians from the authority and the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, had gathered to unveil(揭露)a “climate action plan”. The city aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, two decades earlier than the target set by the national government.Mumbai is extremely vulnerable to climate change.A narrow and densely populated(人口密集的)island, surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea, it is attacked by monsoon(季候风) rains for four months a year and routinely subject to flooding, especially during high tide. That is bad enough for thecity’s apartment-dwellers(公寓居民). But it is even worse for the 42% of the population who live in slums(贫民窟), which are likely to be washed away or buried by landslides(山体滑坡).The key of the plan is a proposal to decarbonise(去碳化)Mumbai’s energy. Generating the city’s electricity, which produces nearly two-thirds of the city’s emissions, relies mostly on burning fossil fuels, particularly coal. The city wants to increase the share of renewables (可再生资源). It is looking, for instanceinto installing solar panels(装太阳能电池板)on rooftops.Another priority is to improve the quality andefficiency of the city’s buildings.Slums, especially, are heat islands. Made of whatever materials are at hand or cheaply available, they are five or six degrees hotter than structures of good quality, making them, as the report puts it, “uninhabitable(不适于居住的)” on hot days. Moreover, the heat, damp and cramped(狭窄的)conditions make slum residents more vulnerable to disease—a less obvious risk of climate change. The plan is, however, short on details of how to achieve its ambition s. Still, in publishing one at all Mumbai has led the way among South Asian metropolises(大都市). Other cities are keen to follow suit, says Shruti Narayan of C40, who helped with the report. Chennai and Bangalore in the south have started work on their plans. Others, including Delhi and Kolkata in India, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Karachi in Pakistan have expressed interest in doing something similar. There is plenty in Mumbai’s240-page document to inspire them. One is the fact that it does not rely on using technologies that do not yet exist, a criticism at many countries’ national proposals. Another is the attention given to adaptation(coping with all the bad things already happening) and not just reducing future emissions.Details may anyway be beside the point. The real value of Mumbai’s plan is as a signalling device(信号装置)that “focuses the attention of policymakers”, states Abhas Jha, a climate specialist at the World Bank. The Paris Agreement, which committed the world to the goal of keeping the rise in temperatures to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, worked in much the same way, leaving countries to hash out details later. Time, though, is getting ever shorter.【课标词汇】1.stream(一群人,东西)涌,涌动;流动He was watching the taxis streaming past.他看着出租车一辆接着一辆地驶过。

博士论文英文演讲稿范文

博士论文英文演讲稿范文

Ladies and Gentlemen,Good morning/afternoon/evening. It is my great honor to stand before you today to present my doctoral thesis, which delves into the profound impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems. I have spent the past several years immersed in this research, and I am excited to share the findings and insights I have gathered along the way.Introduction----------------The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic and diverse ecosystems on Earth, providing essential services to millions of people worldwide. However, the coastal zone is also one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In this thesis, I have investigated the complex interactions between climate change and coastal ecosystems, with a focus on the Mediterranean region, which is particularly susceptible to the effects of global warming.Thesis Overview----------------My doctoral research is structured into five main chapters, each addressing a specific aspect of the impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems. Here is a brief overview of each chapter:Chapter 1: Introduction to Coastal Ecosystems and Climate ChangeThis chapter provides an overview of the coastal zone, its ecological importance, and the various climate change impacts that affect this region. It also outlines the objectives and methodology of my research.Chapter 2: The Mediterranean Coastal Zone: A Unique and Vulnerable EcosystemIn this chapter, I discuss the unique characteristics of the Mediterranean coastal zone, including its biodiversity, physical and chemical properties, and socio-economic importance. I also highlight the challenges faced by this ecosystem due to climate change.Chapter 3: Climate Change Impacts on Coastal EcosystemsThis chapter presents the results of my analysis on the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems, focusing on sea-level rise, temperature changes, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events.Chapter 4: Ecosystem Response and Adaptation StrategiesDrawing on the findings from Chapter 3, this chapter explores the response of coastal ecosystems to climate change and the adaptation strategies employed by organisms and human communities. I provide examples from the Mediterranean region to illustrate these responses.Chapter 5: Implications for Conservation and ManagementThe final chapter of my thesis synthesizes the findings from the previous chapters and discusses the implications for conservation and management strategies in the face of climate change. I propose a set of recommendations for policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders to ensure the sustainable future of coastal ecosystems.Main Findings-------------1. Sea-level Rise: My research indicates that sea-level rise is one of the most significant threats to coastal ecosystems, particularly in the Mediterranean region. Increased sea-levels lead to erosion, saltwater intrusion, and loss of habitat for marine and terrestrial species.2. Temperature Changes: Rising temperatures have caused shifts in species distributions and altered the timing of biological events, such as reproduction and migration. This has significant implications for the functioning of coastal ecosystems.3. Ocean Acidification: The increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is leading to ocean acidification, which is detrimental to calcifying organisms such as corals, mollusks, and plankton. This has a cascading effect on the entire food web.4. Extreme Weather Events: Climate change is leading to more frequent and intense extreme weather events, such as storms, hurricanes, and heatwaves. These events can cause significant damage to coastal ecosystems and infrastructure.5. Adaptation and Conservation: My research suggests that adaptive management strategies are crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems. These strategies include habitat restoration, protected areas, and community-based conservation initiatives.Conclusion----------In conclusion, my doctoral thesis has provided a comprehensive analysis of the impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems, with a specific focus on the Mediterranean region. The findings highlight the urgency of addressing climate change and implementing effective conservation and management strategies to safeguard these vital ecosystems.I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors, colleagues, and family for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my doctoral journey. This research would not have been possible without their help.Ladies and gentlemen, I am now open to any questions you may have regarding my research. Thank you for your attention.---[Note: This is a sample speech and may require further customization to fit the specific content of the doctoral thesis.]。

2010年考研英语一阅读理解text3主题为”全球变暖“,文章共计计1250字,考察了全球变暖问题的起因、影响和解决方法。

以下为完整的文章内容:Text 3Global WarmingWe have already recognized that the world's climate is changing due to global warming. The average temperature of the Earth has increased by almost 1°C in the past century, and it is still rising. Global warming has been observed in many aspects, such as the increase in average global temperature, the rise in sea levels, the shrinking of glaciers, and the decline in Arctic sea ice. These changes have brought about severe weather events, such as heatwaves, floods, and hurricanes, which have had a significant impact on human health, agriculture, and the environment. The situation is urgent, and it requires immediate action. In order to mitigate the effects of global warming, we need to understand its causes and take effective measures to address it.Causes of Global WarmingThe primary cause of global warming is the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. These gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping into space, leading to a rise in the Earth's temperature. The m本人n sources of these greenhouse gases are human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and industrial processes. These activities have released large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, resulting in the enhanced greenhouse effect and the warming of the Earth's climate. In addition, the rapid growth of the global population and the increase in industrialization have further exacerbated the problem of global warming.Impacts of Global WarmingGlobal warming has had far-reaching impacts on the Earth's climate, ecosystems, and human societies. One of the most notable effects is the rise in sea levels, which is due to the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers. This has led to the flooding of coastal areas and the displacement of millions of people, as well as the loss of habitats for marine life. Moreover, the increase in temperature has caused changes in precipitation patterns, resulting in more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves, and heavy r本人nfall. 2.3.3Milankovitch Cycles TheoryMilankovitch cycles theory is about the frequency of ice age. Milankovich proposed that the temperature of earth has something to do with the position of the earth in the orbit around sun. However it did not gain acceptance until 1968 when Dr. Imbrie presented additional evidence for M theory. He meassured the isotope level in small seashell depositand the change of isotope abundancy corresponds with the temperature change. However, later on, a geochemist tested the samples from Devil's Hole, a place in south Nevada and the results did not match with the previous results.Even thought Dr. Imbrie still think M theory was valid, he conceded that many other factors contribute to the isotope level. 关于气候变化对生态系统的影响的英语作文

The Impact of Climate Change on EcosystemsClimate change, a global phenomenon resulting from the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, is having increasingly serious effects on our planet's ecosystems. These changes are not just affecting remote regions; they are having increasingly serious implications for our daily lives and the well-being of all living creatures. One of the most profound impacts of climate change is the disruption of natural habitats. As temperatures rise, species are forced to migrate to cooler areas, often leading to a loss of biodiversity in their original habitats. This migration can also result in conflicts with other species, causing further imbalances in the ecosystem. Additionally, the melting of polar ice caps is causing sea levels to rise, threatening coastal ecosystems and leading to the loss of critical habitats for marine life.Changes in precipitation patterns are also having devastating effects on ecosystems. Many regions are experiencing more frequent and severe droughts, while others are seeing an increase in flooding and severe storms. These extreme weather events are destroying habitats, killing plant and animal species, and eroding soil, leading to further degradation of the environment. The impact of climate change on plant life is particularly concerning. Plants are essential for the maintenance of ecosystems, providing food, shelter, and oxygen for many species. However, rising temperatures and changes in precipitation are causing many plant species to die off or become less productive. This, in turn, is having a ripple effect on the entire food chain, as herbivores struggle to find enough food and predators struggle to find their prey.Climate change is also having increasingly serious effects on marine ecosystems. The rise in sea temperatures is causing coral bleaching, a phenomenon that kills coral reefs and destroys vital habitats for marine life. Additionally, ocean acidification, caused by the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, is making it more difficult for marine creatures to form shells and skeletons. In conclusion, climate change is having increasingly devastating effects on our planet's ecosystems. From the loss of biodiversity to the disruption of natural habitats, the consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. It is crucial that we take action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change on our planet's fragile ecosystems.。

全球气候变暖会导致濒危动物灭绝英语作文Global Warming will Lead to the Extinction of Endangered AnimalsIntroductionGlobal warming, also known as climate change, is a serious issue that is affecting our planet in numerous ways. One of the most concerning consequences of global warming is the impact it will have on endangered animals. As temperatures rise and ecosystems change, many species are facing extinction. In this essay, we will explore how global warming is threatening the survival of endangered animals and what can be done to protect them.Impact of Global Warming on Endangered AnimalsGlobal warming is causing temperatures to rise at an alarming rate, resulting in changes to the habitats of many animals. For animals that rely on specific climates and environments to survive, such as polar bears and penguins, this can have devastating consequences. As the polar ice caps melt and sea levels rise, these animals are losing their habitats and food sources. The loss of sea ice is also affecting the hunting andbreeding patterns of these animals, leading to a decline in their populations.Furthermore, global warming is causing extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires, which can have a devastating impact on wildlife. These events can destroy habitats, disrupt food sources, and force animals to migrate to new areas in search of food and shelter. For endangered species that are already struggling to survive, these disruptions can push them closer to extinction. In addition to habitat loss and extreme weather events, global warming is also leading to the spread of diseases and invasive species. As temperatures rise, diseases that were once confined to specific regions are spreading to new areas, affecting the health and survival of wildlife. Invasive species, which thrive in warmer climates, are also expanding their ranges and outcompeting native species for resources. This can disrupt ecosystems and lead to a decline in biodiversity, putting endangered animals at even greater risk.Protecting Endangered Animals from ExtinctionIn order to protect endangered animals from the threat of extinction due to global warming, it is crucial that we take action to reduce our carbon footprint and mitigate the effects ofclimate change. This can be achieved through a combination of efforts at the local, national, and global levels. At the local level, conservation organizations and wildlife reserves can work to protect and restore habitats for endangered animals. This may involve setting aside protected areas, implementing conservation programs, and reducing human impacts such as deforestation and pollution. By preserving natural habitats and creating safe spaces for animals to thrive, we can help them adapt to the changing climate and increase their chances of survival. On a national level, governments can implement policies and regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable energy sources. By investing in clean energy technologies and transitioning away from fossil fuels, we can reduce our carbon footprint and slow the pace of global warming. This will not only benefit endangered animals but also help protect the planet for future generations. At the global level, countries can work together to address the root causes of climate change and develop strategies for adaptation and resilience. By collaborating on international agreements such as the Paris Agreement, countries can set targets for reducing emissions and support each other inachieving these goals. This will require cooperation, innovation, and a commitment to protecting the planet and its biodiversity.ConclusionGlobal warming poses a significant threat to endangered animals, pushing many species closer to extinction. As temperatures rise and ecosystems change, animals are facing habitat loss, extreme weather events, and the spread of diseases and invasive species. In order to protect endangered animals from the impacts of climate change, it is essential that we take action to reduce our carbon footprint and mitigate the effects of global warming. By working together at the local, national, and global levels, we can help ensure the survival of endangered animals and preserve the planet for future generations.。
