Experts say that if warming patterns continue, the Arctic could be free of summer sea ice by 2050. That may cause two-thirds of the word's 20,000 polar bears to be gone by then too.Polar bears can’t survive for long on land. Seals are their main source of food. The only place where polar bears can hunt seals is on the ice. Although these bears are strong swimmers, they are no match for lightning swift seals in the water. A polar bear has brilliantly clever strategies to overcome this disadvantage. In winter the bear waits motionl ess beside a seal’s breathing hole, which is a narrow tunnel through the ice. Often many hours pass before the seal comes up for air and the bear kills it with a powerful blow of its paw. In summer, the polar bears that live on land eat very little and wait for the sea ice to returnWith the sea ice forming later in the year and melting earlier, polar bears do not have enough opportunity to hunt and eat. Less sea ice makes it harder for the bears to catch the seals. The bears must swim longer distances between ice packs, and they can’t always make it. The ice is also getting thinner. These conditions can cause polar-bear cubs to become separated from their mothers, who provide them with food.Steven Amstrup is the chief scientist of Polar Bear International北极熊国际. The group aims to save the bears and their home. "The more people who see polar bears and understand their difficult situations, the better the chance we’ll alter our warmingpath in time to save them," he says.11. The large dictionaries have over half a million entries, but many of these are compound words ( schoolroom, sugar bowl) or different derivatives of the same word ( rare-rarely, rarefy) , and a good many are obsolete words to help us read older literature. Dictionaries do not attempt to cover completely words that we can draw on: the informal vocabulary, especially slang, localism, the terms of various occupations and professions; words used only occasionally by scientists and specialists in many fields; foreign words borrowed for use in English; or many new words or new senses of words that come into use every year and that may or may not be used long enough to warrant being included. It would be conservative to say that there are over a million English words that any of us might meet in our listening and reading and that we may draw on in our speaking and writing.Professor Seashore concluded that first-graders enter school with at least 24, 000 words and add 5,000 each year so that they leave high school with at least 80,000. These figures are for recognition vocabulary, the words we understand when we reador hear them. Our active vocabulary, the words we use in speaking and writing is considerably smaller. You cannot always produce a word exactly when you want it. But consciously using the words you recognize in reading will help get them into your active vocabulary. Occasionally in your reading pay particular attention to these words, especially when the subject is one that you might well write or talk about. Underline or make a list of words that you feel a need for and look up the less familiar ones in a dictionary. And then before very long find a way to use some of them. Once you know how they are pronounced and what they stand for, you can safely use them.16. From the passage we learn that _____.A. dictionaries completely cover the words we can make use ofB. "schoolroom" is used in the passage as an example of a specialized termC. once you know how a word is pronounced and what it represents, you have turned it into your active wordD. active vocabulary refers to words we understand when we read and hear them Passage 3In 1991, when announced to be HIV positive, "Magic" Johnson became the face of a disease that the public still had a lot to learn about. The basketball star established the Magic Johnson Foundation that year and took a leading role on the public relations and fund-raising fronts in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Fifteen years later, there is still more work to do."A lot of times, what happens is that the poster is not enough," Johnson says, motioning to his likeness on the blackboard behind him. 'So I have to get out and tell them myself, like I'm doing here today." Johnson is now talking to an assembly at Boys and Girls High School in his neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y. The crowd is a few hundred students in a mostly black, working-class neighborhood. Thus event is the fourth of a 10-city speaking tour that is organized for minority communities.According to drug maker Abbot, half of the more than 1 million Americans living with HIV are black. African-American men are being diagnosed with the disease at a rate 10 times as high as that of white men. For women, the situation is even worse. The rate of diagnosis for African-American women is 23 times as high as that for their white counterparts."Right now, we don't have a solution on how to combat it, so we're trying to do some different things than what has happened before," Johnson says.Getting the word out is what draws Johnson to black neighborhood high schools such as this one, and the message he brings with him is a practical one. "The safest sex is no sex," he says. "But, in reality, we know only a certain number of people are going to hear that. Then I hit them with Hey, if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to protect yourself and your partner."Hopefully, by talking realistically instead of avoiding the issues, Johnson can help make the next generation of African-Americans less likely to have HIV and AIDS. "Just try to be real with them," he says. "They appreciate that."21. The government has recognized it too, abandoning rules in 2011 that had formerly stopped 16 to 24-year-olds from doing unpaid work while claiming unemployment benefit. But moving from that to forcing them to work without pay in order to collect these benefits has proved a big step.More than one million young people in Britain are unemployed, the highest number since the mid-1980s. Keen both to cut the welfare bill and to avoid the depressed future wages that may result from early unemployment, the government has introduced an ambitious program of reform to get youngsters off welfare and into work. A key part of it is ensuring that no one gets benefit from the government for long; ministers are keen to avoid what happened after the early-1980s recession, when unemployment continued in some parts of the country for a long time after the economy began to improve. To help young people into work, ministers had persuaded lots of employers, including bakery chains, bookshops and supermarkets, to take on unemployed youths, who receive work experience but no pay, with the prospect of a proper job for those who shine. Some 35,000 youngsters participated last year; half found paid work soon after finishing the scheme. The idea of getting young adults used to showing up for work is popular with voters: according to a survey published in February, about 60% of people support the program. Equally attractive was the option of compelling them to work: Under the existing arrangements youngsters could choose whether or not to accept a place, but if they dropped out after the end of the first week, they stood to lose up to two weeks' benefits.Yet the scheme has also polarized opinion: a third of people are consistently opposed. Following a noisy "Right to Work" campaign that accused employers of co-operating secretly with the government in "forced labor", several firms dropped out of the program. To prevent this from getting worse, Chris Grayling, an employment minister, admitted that young people could leave their work experience at any time without being punished for doing so. This not only halted the flight of employers ( for now, at least) but also enabled him to announce that new firms have agreed to take part in the program.26. According to the passage, young people in Britain ______.A. are used to showing up for workB. value unpaid work very muchC. are always opposed to unpaid workD. could learn something about job security through unpaid work27. It is largely attributed to the Taoism affection to nature. There are two most preferred topics in traditional Chinese paintings. One kind depicts various happy scenes of family life in which the elderly play chess and drink tea, young men farm and harvest in the field, women weave or sew clothes and kids play in the outside. The other depicts the recreations of rural life. In these paintings, fishermen fish on the lake, farmers hew or collect herbs on the hills and scholars compose poems or paintings under pine trees. READING COMPREHENSION (10小题,每小题2分,共20分)Read the following two passages and answer the questions.Passage OneBenjamin Contreras works in the shipping department of a large publisher. When customers return damaged books, the damage often is not obvious to the clerks who unpack them. They sometimes place these books back on the warehouse shelves. The damaged books are then shipped out again to the next customer who orders them. That customer finds the damage, returns them again, and usually complains about the inconvenience.Benjamin thinks the company could avoid shipping out damaged books by creating labels that identify the books as damaged. The company could send the new labels to customers who want to return damaged books. When the damaged books arrived back at the warehouse with the new labels, the clerks would know to give the customer credit for the return and then destroy thebooks.Benjamin’s supervisor, Karen Horner, likes this idea and has the new labels made. She asks Benjamin to write a letter to customers, explaining how to use the labels. Karen decides that he also should write a complete set of instructions for returning books. This would prevent customers from shipping by the wrong method, sending the books to the wrong address, and so on. She also asks Benjamin to write a description of the ret urn process for staff in other departments because they often ask questions about it.Benjamin has read many sets of instructions and assumes that a description of a process would be very similar. He thinks he probably could just give other staff members a copy of the instructions he writes for the customers. Benjamin is concerned about the customers’ reaction to the instructions. He often talks with them on the phone and knows they are very busy and tend to be impatient. They may not read the instructions; some may be annoyed at even receiving them.26. Which department does Benjamin work in?A. Sales department.B. Shipping department.C. Accounting department.27. According to Benjamin, if there are labels that ________, the company can avoid shipping outdamaged books.A. tell the books are damagedB. show the books are newC. offer customers discounts28. Which of the following writings is applied by Benjamin?A. Object description.B. Process description.C. Mechanism description. Passage TwoFrom time to time, whatever our occupations are, we need to persuade others to see things our way. Often we have to use persuasion to favorably influence customers, suppliers and shareholders. Although persuasion is a skill valuable in any job, few people receive any relevant training -except professional salespeople. Selling, a dirty word to many people, is the art of persuasion. Everyone can benefit from learning the basic techniques of selling.Customers do not make buying decisions unless they recognize a need which the sales person can satisfy. You need to be able to ask the right questions in a way which is relevant to your customers' interests. If you can do so, the customer will answer fully and honestly, because he cansee a benefit in doing so. Once a customer acknowledges a need, he is more willing to listen to the benefits of the product. He will not necessarily be interested in the product itself, but in what it can do to satisfy his need.Generally speaking, salespeople employ five skills. First, they ask questions and really listen to the replies so they can identify the cu stomer’s needs exactly. Second, they describe those benefits of the product which me et that customer’s needs. Thi rd, they use evidence to support any claims made. Fourth, they overcome objections. Finally, they close the sale. These techniques can be used positively by us all, at work and in our daily lives.31. According to the passage, how can we favorably influence others?A. By considering things in their ways.B. By persuading them in favor of us.C. By listening to them effectively.32. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A. Persuasion is useful only in marketing and sales.B. READING COMPREHENSION (10小题,每小题2分,共20分)Directions: Read the following two passages and answer the questions.Passage One:Eye contact is a nonverbal technique that helps the speaker “sell” his or her ideas to an audience. Besides its persuasive powers, eye contact helps hold listener interest. A successful speaker must maintain eye contact with an audience. To have good rapport (关系) with listeners, a speaker should maintain direct eye contact for at least 75 percent of the time. Some speakers foc us exclusively on their notes. Others gaze over the heads of their listeners. Both are likely to lose audience interest and esteem. People who maintain eye contact while speaking, whether from a podium (讲台) or from across the table, are “regarded not only as exceptionally well-disposed by their target but also as more believable and earnest.”To show the potency of eye contact in daily life, we have only to consider how passers-by behave when their glances happen to meet on the street. At one extreme are those people who feel obliged to smile when they make eye contact. At the other extreme are those who feel awkward and immediately look away. To make eye contact, it seems, is to make a certain link with someone.Eye contact with an audience also lets a speaker know and monitor the listeners. It is, in fact, essential for analyzing an audience during a speech. Visual cues from audience members can indicate that a speech is dragging, that the speaker is dwelling on a particular point for too long, or that a particular point requires further explanation. As we have pointed out, visual feedback from listeners should play an important role in shaping a speech as it is delivered.26. This passage is mainly concerned with ________.A. the importance of eye contactB. the potency of nonverbal techniquesC. successful speech delivery27. As emphasized in the passage, a good speaker must _______ most of the time.A. focus on his or her notesB. maintain direct eye contact with the audienceC. be very persuasive and believable28. The word “target” in the last sentence of the first paragraph can best be replaced by _____.A. “destination”B. “goal”C. “audience”29. In daily life, when the glances of two passers-by happen to meet, what will these two personsinevitably do?A. Smile to each other.B. Try to make a conversation with each other.C. Neither of the above.30. Eye contact with an audience, according to the author, doesn’t help the speaker to _______.A. control and interest the audienceB. analyze his audience when he is startingC. gain audience esteemPassage Two:More than 65 percent of a company’s business comes from current customers. Those customers are not easily replaced, so it is every company’s job to keep its current customerssatisfied even as it is trying to attract new customers. After all, some of those new customers will come because they hear about the store from current customers. In the fast-paced world of retail (零售), customer loyalty is especially important. So many stores are selling the same products that retailers have to offer customers something more. That something more is their customer service. Discount coupons (商家的优待券), valet parking(代客泊车)(where parking is a problem), and free gift wrapping are just some of the extras retailers now offer.Another important facet of customer service is handling customer complaints. Retailers should not think of complaints as a nuisance. They should see them as an excellent opportunity for some free feedback, although it is true that a small percentage of customers do complain unjustly. But the vast majority of customers who complain are telling retailers what they need to hear. For this reason, retailers should (1) listen carefully, (2) respond positively, (3) admit a mistake immediately, or if a mistake has not been made, explain the reason for the confusion,(4) ask customers what they would like done, and (5) comply with their requests. Good customer service is the surest way to stand out from all of the other retailers.31. Why are current customers important to retailers?A. They shop at the same place from habit.B. They provide two-thirds of a company’s business.C. They are different from new customers.32. Many stores sell the same products. How can one retailer stand out?A. With discount coupons.B. Through heavy advertising.C. With the quality of its customer service.33. How can retailers get free feedback?A. By increasing profits.B. By paying attention to complaints.C. By promoting holiday sales.34. Most customers who complain are ______.A. doing it unjustlyB. just trying to get their money backC. telling the retailer what he should know35. If a mistake has not been made, a retailer should ______.A. offer a reason for the misunderstandingB. pretend it never happenedC. get an apology from the customerIV. TRANSLATION(4段短文,每段5分,共20分)Directions: Translate the following passages into Chinese:36. Listening carefully, using appropriate body language, and interpreting other people’s bodylanguage are just as important to good communication as speaking clearly and using appropriate words. The nonverbal messages you send by means of your appearance, posture, and facial expressions are strong messages. A receiver is likely to remember a nonverbal message even after he or she forgets a specific verbal message.37. Eyes provide a most revealing facial expression and often are called “the windows of thesoul”. Eyes reveal feelings such as excitement, boredom, and concentration. Eyebrows also send various messages. Raised eyebrows may mean nervousness, surprise, or questioning, pinched together they may imply confusion or indecision.38. Use an agenda to determine and control the direction of the meeting. Problems arise whenmeeting participants stray from the topic---when attention drifts to peripheral issues or personal stories. Remain polite and friendly, but keep the group on track. When participants ramble, summarize what you think they have said and ask a question to point them in a specific direction.39. A description is a verbal and visual picture of something. You might be asked to write adescription of an object or a mechanism, usually as part of a report or a manual. An object is something natural or synthetic that can be seen or touched, ranging from an apple, to a coffee cup, to a pencil. A mechanism is a synthetic object that consists of several moving parts working together to perform one or more tasks. A mechanism can be as simple as a pencil sharpener or as complex as a computer.Part VI WRITING (2大题,40题10分,41题20分,共30分)40. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.A sociologist once said “Th ere is a senseless notion thatchildren grow up and leave home when they’re 18, and the truth is far from that”. Today, unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents. “There is a major shift in the middle class,” declares sociologist fro m Northwestern University, whose son, 19, moved back in after an absence of eight months.Analysts cite a variety of reasons for this return to the nest. The marriage age is rising, a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people. A high divorce rate and a declining remarriage rate are sending economically pressed and emotionally hurt survivors back to parental shelters. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so excessively great that many students now attend local schools. Even after graduation, young people find their wings clipped by skyrocketing housing costs.Living at home, says a school teacher, continues to give her security and moral support. Her mother agreed, “It’s ridiculou s for the kids to pay all that money for rent. It makes sense for kids to stay at home.” But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the delicate balancing act. But for others, it proves too difficult. Michelle Tim, 24, has been home three times-and left three times. “What I considered a social drink, my dad considered an alcohol problem,” she e xplains. “He never liked anyone I dated, so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends’ houses.”Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on? Most psychologists feel lengthy homecomings are a mistake. Children, struggling to establish separate identities, can end up with “a sense of inadequacy, defeat and failure.” And aging parents, who should be enjoyingsome financial and personal freedom, find themselves stuck with responsibilities. Many agree that brief visits, however, can work beneficially.26. There was apparently a trend in the U.S. ________.A) for young adults to leave their parents and live independentlyB) for middle class young adults to stay with their parentsC) for married young adults to move back home after a lengthy absenceD) for young adults to get jobs nearby in order to live with their parents27. Which of the following does not account for young adults returning to the nest?A) Young adults find housing costs too high.B) Young adults are psychologically and intellectually immature.C) Young adults seek parental comfort and moral support.D) Quite a number of young adults attend local schools.28. One of the disadvantages of young adults returning to stay with their parents is that ______.A) there will inevitably be inconveniences in everyday lifeB) the parents have to spend more money keeping a bigger family goingC) the young adults tend to be overprotected by their parentsD) public opinion is against young adults staying with their parents29. The word “hassles” in the passage (in Para.3) probably means ______.A) agreements B) worriesC) disadvantages D) quarrels30. According to the passage what is the best for both parents and children?A) They should adjust themselves to sharing the family expenses.B) Children should leave their parents when they are grown-up.C) Adult children should visit their parents from time to time.D) Parents should support their adult children when they are in trouble.Passage TwoQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. The English have the reputation of being very different from all other nationalities. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons it may be fairly stated, the Englishman has developed some attitudes and habits distinguishing him from other nationalities.Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person among people he knows well. Before strangers he often seems inhibited(拘束的), even embarrassed. You have only to witness a railway compartment any morning or evening to see the truth. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or dozing in a corner; no one speaks. An English wit once suggested to overseas visitors, “On entering a railway compartment shake hands with all the passenge rs.” Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior, which, if broken, makes the person immediately the object of suspicion. It is well known that the English seldom show openlyextremes of enthusiasm, emotion etc. Of course, an Englishman feels no less than any other nationality. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. A man of more emotio nal temperament might describe her as “a marvelous jewel”, while the Englishman will flatly state “Um, she’s all right”. An Englishman may recommend a highly successful and enjoyable film to a friend by commenting, “It’s not bad.” The overseas visitors must not be disappointed by this apparent lack of interest; he must realize that “all right”, “not bad” are very often used with the sense of “first class”, “excellent”. This special use of language is particularly common in English.31. One explanation for the different character of English people is that ____.A) they are geographically isolated from the European continentB) they have nothing to do with the other EuropeansC) they like living separatelyD) they like living on an island32.If you witness a rai lway compartment, you’ll find that ____.A) the English have much in commonB) the English are diligent readersC) the English are quiet and reservedD) the English have good manners33.According to the passage, on entering a railway compartment, an overseas visitor is expectedto ________.A) inquire about the code of behaviour in the trainB) shake hands with all passengersC) shake hands with the person you knowD. behave like an Englishman34.The English way of commenting on something or somebody suggests that ____.A) the English are modestB) the English feel no less than any other nationalityC) the English tend to display less emotion than they feelD) the English don’t take a strong interest in anything35.What does the passage mainly discuss?A) The differences between the English and the other Europeans.B) The character of English people.C) The shy Englishman.D) The code of behavior.Passage ThreeQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passageSome people are accustomed to thinking that facts must either be believed or disbelieved–as if belief were like a light switch with only two positions. My use of the bathtub trick is intended to illustrate that belief does not have to operate as a simple yes or no choice, all or nothing. Belief can be more conditional; it can be something that we decide to have “up to a point”or “to a degree”. And so, the question we might ask ourselves while reading does not have to be “Should I believe it or not?” This implies that the belief we have in any given fact, or in any given idea, is not determined by whether it sounds right or whether the source is an authority. It means that our beliefs are determined by the reasons that justify them. Belief is not a mechanical action, brought about by invariable relics of nature, but a human activity, the exercise of judgment. With this in mind, we might say that we perform this action better when we knowwhat the reasons are that have led to our belief, and why they are good reasons. These observations do not deprive us of our ability to believe in what we read. They are not intended to transform you from credulous believers into stubborn doubters. The process of weighing beliefs against the quality of reasons is one that you already go through all the time, whether you are aware of it or not. We all do. The practice of critical reading is the exercise of this kind of judgment on purpose. By doing it, we protect ourselves from being led into belief for inadequate reasons, but at the same time we open up our minds to the possibility of arriving at belief for adequate ones. If we decide to grant or withhold consent based on the quality of the reasons that we are given, we admit at the same time that two things are possible. We admit that we might consent less in the future if we discover that the reasons are not so good after all; and we admit that we might consent more if we are ever presented with better reasons than we had formerly know. This attitude is not pure skepticism any more than it is pure credulity. It issomewhere in between. It is the attitude of an open-minded thinker, of someone who wishes to be responsible for deciding for herself or himself what to believe.36. Which question is not encouraged to be asked while you are reading?A) Should I agree with the author?B) To what extent should I believe?C) Why should I consent to it?D) What makes it sound and reasonable?37. To believe or disbelieve what you read should be based on ________A) the facts that you are givenB) whether the author is open-minded or notC) the quality of reasons provided by the materialD) the assumption that you know everything about it38. As a human activity, weighing the facts about something is actually ________.A) determined by the rules of natureB) a purposeful performanceC) brought about even at birthD) experienced by everybody39. According to the author, which of the following statements is true?A) An open-minded thinker is responsible for what he says.B) Our attitude toward what we read may change if we are given more reasons.C) Critical reading can make us believe more in what we read.D) We ought to question the value of what we read if its source is not authoritative.40. What is the best title for this passage?A) Judgment and responsibility B) Reading and beliefC) Distrust and faith D) Reading and human activityPassage FourQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.“Experience may possibly be the best teacher, but it is not a particular good teacher.” You might think that Winston Churchill or perhaps Mark Twain spoke those words, but they actually come from James March, a professor at Stanford University and a pioneer in the field of organization decision making. For years March (possibly be wisest philosopher of management) has studied how humans think and act, and he continues to do so inhis new book The Ambiguities of Experience. He begins by reminding us of just how firmly we have been sticking to the idea of experiential learning :“Experience is respected;experience is sought;experience is explained.”The problem is that learning from experience involves serious complications, ones that are part of the nature of experience itself and which March discusses in the body of this book.In one interesting part of book, for example,he turns a double eye toward the use of stories as the most effective way of experiential learning. He says“Th e more accurately reality is presented, the less understandable the story, and the more understandable the story, the less realistic it is.”Besides being a broadly knowledgeable researcher. March is also a poet, and his gift shines though in the depth of views he offers and the simple language he uses. Though the book is short, it is demanding;Don’t pick it up looking for quick, easy lessons. Rather, be ready to think deeply about learning from experience in work and life.41. You should decide on the best choicer andmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Tom, at 53, was a very successful man. He had worked up a first class business, married a charming woman and built himself a good house in the London suburbs, that was neither so modern, nor so conventional . He had good taste. His son, Bob, 19, was doing well at Oxford; his daughter, April, aged 16, who was at a good school, had no wish to use make-up or wear low dresses. She still considered herself too young for these things. Yet she was happy, affectionate and thoroughly enjoyed life. All the same, for some time, Tom had been aware that he was working hard for very little. His wife gave hima quick kiss in the morning when he left for the office and, if she was notat a party, a quick kiss in the evening when he came home. It was obvious her life was completely filled with the children, her clothes, with keeping her figure slim, with keeping the house clean and smart, with her charities, her tennis and her friends, and parties. The children were even busier –the boy with his work, and with his own friends, the girl with hers. They were polite to Tom but if he came into the room when they were entertaining a friend there was at once a feeling of constraint. Even if they were alone together, he saw that when he came upon them they were slightly embarrassed and changed the subject of their conversation. Yet they didn’t seem to do this when they were with their mother. He would find them all three, for instance, laughing at something, and when he came in they would stop laughing and stare at him.66) From the passage we understand that Tom was _____________ .A. a successful business man who lived in a townB. not very successful but lived in a nice houseC. was a builder who lived in the suburbsD. was a successful man who had built his own house67) What does the writer tell us about Tom’s daughter, April?A. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for 15 weeks: while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous number of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activities. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.71) Normally a student would at least attend __________ classes each week.A. 36B. 20C. 12D. 1572) According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed________ .A. to live in a different universityB. to take a particular course in a different universityC. to live at home and drive to classesD. to get two degrees from two different universities73) American university students are usually under pressure of workBecause __________.A. their academic performance will affect their future careersB. they are heavily involved in student affairsC. they want to observe university disciplineD. they want to run for positions of authority74) Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizationsProbably because ________.A.they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studiesB.they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC.such positions help them get better jobsD.such positions are usually well paid75) The student organizations seem to be effective in __________.A. dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB. ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD. keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesKey71) B. 1272) B. to take a particular course in a different university73) A. their academic performance will affect their future careers74) C. such positions help them get better jobs75) B. ensuring that the students observe university regulationsPassage 3We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-abilityteaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experiences are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in grading pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic abilities. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.76) In the passage the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching”is ___________.A. criticalB. questioningC. approvingD. objective77) By “held back” ( line 1) the author means “___________”.A. made to remain in the same classesB. forced to study in the lower classesC. drawn to their studiesD. prevented from advancing78) The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern should be thedevelopment of the student’s ___________.A. personal qualities and social skillsB. total personalityC. learning ability and communicative skillsD. intellectual ability79) Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A.
