(10 points)⑴I deny not, but that it is of greatest concernment for the Common wealth and church, to have vigilant eyes how books demean themselves as well as men; and thereafter to confine, imprison, and do sharpest justice on them as male- factors. For books are not absolutely dead things but do contain a potency of life in them to be as active as that soul was whose progeny they are: nay, they do preserve as in a vial the purest efficacy and extraction of that living intellect that bred them. I know they are as lively, and as vigorously productive, as those fabulous dragons’ teeth, and being sown up an d down, may chance to spring up armed men. And yet, on the other hand, unless wariness be used, as good almost kill a man as kill a good book; who kills a man kills a reasonable creature, God’s image, but he who destroy a good book, kills reason itself, kills the image of God, as it were, in the eye.Questions: What is the central idea of this passage? How does the author develop this idea?Answer____________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________⑵It is not the mere addition to our knowledge that is the illumination; but the locomotion, the movement onwards, of that mental centre, to which both what we know, and what we are learning, the accumulating mass of our acquirements, gravitates. And therefore a truly great intellect, and recognized to be such by the common opinion of mankind, such as the intellect of Aristotle, or of St. Thomas, or of Newton, or of Goethe is one which takes a connected view of old and new, past and present, far and near, and which has an insight into the influence of all these one on another; without which there is no whole, and no centre. It possesses the knowledge, not only of things, but also of their mutual and true relations; knowledge, not merely considered as acquirement, but as philosophy. Accordingly, when this analytical, distributive, harmonizing process is away, the mind experiences no enlargement, and is not reckoned as enlightened or comprehensive, whatever it may add to its knowledge. For instance, a great memory, as I have already said, does not make a philosopher, any more than a dictionary can be called a grammar. There are men who embrace in their minds a vast multitude of ideas, but with little sensibility about their real relations towards each other. These may be antiquarians, annalists, naturalists; they may be learned in the law; they may be versed in statistics; they are most useful in their own place; I should shrink from speaking disrespectfully of them; still, there is nothing in such attainments to guarantee the absence of narrowness of mind. If they are nothing more than well-read men, or men of information, they have not what specially deserves the name of culture of mind, or fulfils the type of Liberal Education.Questions: What is the central idea of this passage? How does the author develop this idea?Answer____________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________IV. The following expository Chinese passage uses analogy to persuade the readers to show gumption before adversity, equanimity after misfortune. Translate it into English, using proper English hypotactic syntactic devices—subordination of clauses and phrases. (20 points)人类在历史上的生活正好像旅行一样,旅途上的征人所经过的地方,有时是坦荡平原,有时是崎岖险路。

Unless you want to end a relationship, you don’t tell another person what you think of her or him like this. Failing to be impressed by a friend’s collection of stamps, yawning when a golfer tells you about the great shot he made on the 14th hole, or falling asleep when friends show pictures from their last trip to Thailand. These are all things that educated people try not to do. This is what manners are about: acting in a civilized way to avoid misunderstanding, friction, and conflict. There are no laws enforcing respect. Yet we cannot interact with others without some rules of behavior, rules that are set by some form of social consensus. These guidelines represent what a majority of people consider acceptable and what they consider unacceptable. Rude people are those whose behavior shows little respect for the rules that the majority follow. For instance, because they talk at home while the television is on, many people think they can talk at movies as well. They are not even aware that this habit will bother the other members of the audience.Restaurants have smoking and non-smoking sections, and most smokers are polite enough to ask, DDo you mind if I smoke?‖ before lighting up. Restaurant should also have cellular-phone and no-cellular-phone sections. A new class of rude people has been born: the look-at-me phone users whose boring conversations are just as dangerous to our mental health as smoke is to our lungs. Sometimes, it is better to remain unknown than to make people hate you. There are many children and adolescents whose behavior is generally unacceptable. They swear no matter who is around them, they listen to their walkmans while the teacher is talking to them. Indifferent parents who refuse todiscipline their children are not helping them. Kids who have no idea what being polite means will pay the price sooner or later. When they join the work force, their employers and associates alike will soon realize that the behavior of these rude young people is closer to that of animals than civilized individuals. When they lose a few contracts because they talk with their mouth full, or when they say DBob‖ tosomeone who should be DMr. Johnson,‖ these grown-up kids, because of their ignorance, will never understand why others are getting ahead and they are not.Every little bit of kindness helps. With manners, the best rule is the one that works. It is easier to look and sound attractive when we are nice to other people. Being polite and showing respect can give us an edge. Why do we need an edge? Success in life often starts with a job we like, and since getting a job is usually based on making the right impression, it is always a good idea to be kind and polite.1. What kind of writing is this text?A. Narrative.B. Expository.C. Descriptive.D. Persuasive.2. The sentence that best summarizes the main idea of the Paragraph One is _____ A. Why do we seldom hear people speak so honestly?B. Unless you want to end a relationship, you don’t tell another person what you think of her or him like this.C. These are all things that educated people try not to do.D. This is what manners are about: acting in a civilized way to avoid misunderstanding, friction, and conflict.3. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Paragraph Five? A. The reader is encouraged to behave with good manners. B. The author makes a conclusion of the essay.C. The author further illustrates what is considered bad manners.D. This paragraph is not paralleled with Paragraphs Two, Three and Four.4. According to the passage, the essence of acting in good manners is to _________.A. express oneself in an indirect and tactful way, not honestlyB. remain unnoticed to other peopleC. show respect and concern to other peopleD. follow the crowd and do what people think are acceptable5. Direction: Read the following passage and do the activities after it.The Hazards of Being an Only Child1 Many people who have grown up in multichild families think that being an only child is the best of all possible worlds. They point such benefits as the child’s annual new wardrobe and the lack of competition for parental love. But single-child status isn’t as good as people say it is. Instead of having everything they want, only children are sometimes denied certain basic needs.2 Only children lack companionship. An only child can have trouble making friends, since he or she isn’t used to being around other children. Often, the only child comes home to an empty house; both parents are working, and there are no brothers or sisters to pl ay with or to talk to about the day. At dinner, the single child can’t tell jokes, giggle, or throw food while the adults discuss boring adult subjects. An only child always has his or her own room but never has anyone to whisper to half the night when sle ep doesn’t come. Some only children thrive on this isolation and channel their energies into creative activities like swimming or drawing. Owing to this lack of companionship, an only child sometimes lacks the social ease and self confidence that come from being part of a close-knit group of contemporaries.3 Second, only children lack privacy. An only child is automatically the center of parental concern. There’s never any doubt about which child tried to sneak in after midnight on a weekday. And who will get the lecture the next morning. Also, whenever an only child gives in to a bad mood, runs into his or her room, and slams the door, the door will open thirty seconds later, revealing an anxious parent. Parents of only children sometimes don’t even understand the child’s need for privacy. For example, they may not understand why a teenager wants a lock on the door or a personal telephone. After all, the parents think, there are only the three of us, there’s no need for secrets.4 Most important, only children lack power. They get all the love, but if something goes wrong, they also get all the punishment. When a bottle of perfume is knocked tothe floor or the television is left on all night, there is no little sister or brother to blame it on. Moreover, an only child has no recourse when asking for a privilege of some kind, such as permission to stay out late or to take an overnight trip with friends. There are no other siblings to point to and say, “You let them do it. Why won’t you let me?” With no allies their own age, only children are always outnumbered, two to one. An only child hasn’t a chance of influencing any major family decisions, either.5 Being an only child isn’t as special as some people think. It’s no fun being without friends, without privacy, and without power in one’s own home. But the child who can triumph over these hardships grows up self-reliant and strong. Perhaps for this reason alone, the hazards are worth it.1.A3. Second, only children lack privacy. An only child is automatically the center of parental concern.
