四、阅读理解
(一) Fire can help people in many ways. But it can be very dangerous. Fire can heat water, warm houses, give light and cook. But fire can burn things too. It can burn trees, houses, animals or people. Sometimes big fire can burn forests.
Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting stories about the first time a man or a woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man very, very long time ago. He went up to the sun by a rope (绳子) and brought fire down.
Today people know how to make a fire with matches (火柴). Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. One match can burn a piece of paper, and then it might burn a house.
A small fire can become a big fire very fast. Fire kills many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put out fire. Fire needs oxygen(氧气). Without oxygen it will die. Cover fire with water, sand or sometimes with your coat. This keeps the air away from fire and kills it. Be careful with fire, and it will help you. Be careless with fire, and it will burn you.
1.How did people begin to use fire?

(二) What should we do if one of our classmates suddenly falls ill or gets hurt? Here are some steps you should follow. But always remember to look for medical care after first aid if the wound is serious. Broken bones: Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack. Don't move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Animal bites(咬伤): Wash the bite area with soap and water. Pack the wound with a clean cloth if it is bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital. Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is so the doctor can find the right way to treat him or her at once.
Fainting(昏厥): Have him or her lie with feet lifted a little. Don't move the body if you think there might be wounds from the fall. Make sure he or she can breathe and let in fresh air. Clean the person's face with a cool cloth.
Nosebleeds: Have the person sit up with his or her head tilted(倾斜) forward a little. Do not have the person tilt his or her head back because this may cause heavy breathing or coughing. Pinch(捏) the lower part of the nose for at least 10 minutes.

(三) Nature's Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don't wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed(棚) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.
Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity either; water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don't! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.
If you can't get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lightning.
If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.

Dear Jack,
I am very happy to hear that you will come to visit China. Now let me tell you some manners and customs in China.
When you walk in China, you mustn't walk on the left; you must walk on the right. When you meet other people, you can greet them instead of bowing. When you eat something, you often need to use chopsticks. If you are full, you don't have to eat up the food on the plate. After eating, the host often makes tea for you. Before you leave the house, you must say goodbye to the host politely.
I hope you will come to China soon.
