1. The Farmer and His Sons。
A farmer had two sons. When he was on his death-bed, he
called them to him and said, "My sons, I am leaving you a farm, which I want you to share equally. But there is one thing you must do before you divide it. You must find out who is the
better worker. You must take turns at farming for a year, and
the one who makes the most out of the farm, shall have it all."。
The two sons took turns at farming. The first son worked hard, but he was always thinking of pleasure. He did only what
he had to, and spent the rest of the time playing. The second
son worked just as hard, but he always kept his mind on his work. He thought of nothing else until the day's work was done.
The year was over. The farmer looked at the fields. He saw that the second son had done much better work, and had made much more out of the farm.
"My son," he said to him, "you have done what I wished. You have shown yourself the better worker, and the farm is yours."。
2. The Fox and the Grapes。
One hot summer's day, a fox was walking through an orchard. He was very thirsty, and was looking for something to drink. At last, he came to a vineyard. There, he saw a bunch of ripe
grapes hanging from a vine. They looked so sweet and juicy, that the fox's mouth began to water.
He jumped up to get the grapes, but they were too high up
for him to reach. He tried again and again, but it was no use. At last, he gave up, and walked away, saying to himself, "Those grapes are sour, anyway."。
3. The Lion and the Mouse。
Once, a lion was fast asleep in the jungle. A mouse saw him, and ran up to him, thinking he was dead. The lion awoke, and caught the mouse. He was about to kill it, when the little mouse spoke up.
"Oh mighty lion," he squeaked, "please let me go. One day, I may be able to help you in return."。
The lion laughed, but he was feeling kind that day. He let the mouse go.
Some time later, the lion was caught in a trap. He roared and struggled, but could not get free. The mouse heard him, and ran to his rescue. He gnawed and gnawed at the ropes, until at last the lion was free.
"Oh mighty lion," squeaked the mouse, "you see, I kept my word. I promised I would be able to help you in return."。
The lion was grateful, and never forgot the kindness of the little mouse.
4. The Boy Who Cried Wolf。
Once, there was a boy who looked after the sheep on a hillside. One day, he felt bored, and decided to have some fun. He began to shout, "Wolf! Wolf!" People in the nearby village heard him, and ran up the hill to see what was wrong. When they got there, they saw the boy laughing, and there was no wolf.
The next day, the boy did the same thing. Again, the villagers came running, only to find the boy laughing at them.
On the third day, a real wolf came. The boy shouted, "Wolf! Wolf!" as loud as he could. But no one came to help him. The wolf snatched one of the sheep, and ran off with it.
The boy learned a lesson that day. He realized that it was wrong to play tricks on people, and that no one would believe him again if he did.。
