Listen carefully, working people, we would like to tell you something that could save your precious time and money! Best of all, it is free!
It’s “no”.
What do you ask? We’ll say it again: “No”.
Sweet and simple “no”.
Say “no” at your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears.“Saying ‘no’ to others means you are saying ‘yes’ to yourself, ” said Leslie Charles, a professional speaker from East Lansing, Michigan.
“Time is precious. People are spending money buying time. And yet we are willing to give up our time because we can’t say ‘no’.”
Susie Watson, a famous writer, said people who always say “yes” need to say “no” without guilt(内疚)or fear of punishment. “I would rather have someone give me a
loving ‘no’ than an obligated(强制的) ‘yes’, ” she said.
Susie Watson says she feels “no” obligation to give an explanation when she says “no” either socially or professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? “Not at all, ” said Watson, who is director of advertising and public relations at Timex Corp in Middlebury, Conneticut. “Most people are afraid of saying ‘no’… My advice is to say ‘yes’ only if you don’t mean ‘no’.”
Watson said “no” is the most effective weapon against wasting time. “Every year there are more demands on your time… Other people are happy to use up your time, ” Watson said. Time saving appears to be “no’s” greatest friend.
“No” can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. “No” may even take you further in the business world than “yes”.
“No” is power and strength. “No” now seems completely correct. “Saying ‘no’ isn’t easy. But finally it’s greatly liberating,” Charles said. But, h e added, a “no” project needs to be worked on every day because it is hard to change long-term habit.
But, he also warns: “Don’t go to extremes. Don’t find yourself saying ‘no’ to everything. In return you should learn to hear ‘no’.”
60. The sentence “Saying ‘yes’ to yourself” means _______.
A. you can deal with your business as you have planned
B. you needn’t care about other’s feeling if you are happy
C. you are selfish and treat others rudely
D. you can have more time to play with others
61. When you say “no” to others you should say it in a _______.
A. secret way
B. guilty way
C. proud way
D. polite way
62. In Watson’s opinion, people can save much time on condition that _______.
A. they are afraid of saying “no”
B. they say “no” as muc h as possible
C. they say “no” at a suitable time
D. they make others angry at them
63. If a person says “no” to everything, the result he or she receive may be that he or she _______.
A. faces difficulty in life
B. makes a lot of money
C. enjoys a wonderful life
D. forgets to say “yes” in the end

Yi stands tall in NBA
If you are compared to Yao Ming, you must take it as praise. But rising basketball player Yi Jianlian doesn’t like the comparison. “I don’t like to be compared with him”, he says. “I am not going to be the next anyone, I am who I am.
Being a tall, Chinese basketball player in the NBA means making the comparison is almost inevitable(不可避免的). But as Yi who is 2.12 metres tall starts his first year playing in the US, people are wondering whether he can build a career as successful as Yao.
The 19-year-old has proved to be popular since joining the Milwaukee Bucks(密尔沃基雄鹿队). The Milwaukee mayor even announced October 7 to be “Yi Jianlian Day”. But Yi’s popularity off the court(球场) doesn’t mean he will have a place in the team. “It would be unfair to a lot of people if it did. Nothing is being handed to anyone,” said Bucks coach Larry Krystowiak last week.
Yi is preparing himself for the challenges of the NBA. “All the rookies(新人) will have some difficult times in the NBA. I’m no exception,” he said. “I am aware of the difficulties ahead of me.”
Yi struggled in his first game with Milwaukee last Tuesday. He only scored three points in his club’s first pre-season game. “The rules of the NBA are different. It will take time for me to deal with it,” Yi said.
But his second game on Wednesday was better. Yi scored 12 points.
Pre-season games are just for practice. The NBA season starts on October 30. Then Yi will face the challenge of finding his position. Two other Chinese players failed to develop their career and headed home.
But Yi doesn’t worry about it. “I stopped feeling the pressure a long time ago,”he said. “I am looking forward to beginning my NBA career.”
64. Although Yi is very popular and promising, it still remains to see ________.

D. he has a bright future in his career
67. What is Yi’s attitude to his challenges?
A. He is ready to face them.
B. He is not sure of his
future just like other rookies.
C. He’s been given challenges all the time so he doesn't care.
D. He is not worried about the failures he had.
D
IT seemed like a pie from the sky when 26-year-old Xu Ting found a “magic” Automatic Teller Machine (ATM, 自动提款机). In April 2018, the former security guard (保安) in Guangzhou withdrew* 1,000 yuan from an ATM. Then he noticed that it only took out 1 yuan from his account. Over the next eight hours, Xu made 170 more withdrawals, pocketing more than 175,000 yuan.“I thought it’s OK to have the money since I didn’t steal it or rob (抢劫) the bank,” said Xu. But the young man didn’t realize that his dishonesty might ruin his life.
Afraid to be sought by the bank, Xu was on the run for one year before being arrested (逮捕) and was then sentenced to life imprisonment for theft last November. Under the law, people who steal 100,000 yuan or more from a financial institution (金融机构) face a life sentence or death.
However, Xu’s case has made national headlines, as many think the punishment (惩罚) was too heavy. It led to hot debates on the virtue of honesty, the law and the banking industry. “My son is not a bad kid, but it’s such a money-focused society,” said Xu’s father.
In a recent survey, which asked, “If you ended up in the same situation as Xu Ting, would you withdraw more money from the machine?”, nearly 50% of respondents said yes. Only 7% of the 19,437 respondents said they would stop and report the error to the bank.
Xu’s supporters say the bank is also to blame for not maintaining (维修) its ATM. They said it’s unfair that the bank never has to pay for its machine’s errors. Online posts gave examples of banks refusing to refund (偿还) customers after the bank’s ATM’s spit (吐) out fake (假的) bills. Bank officials said customers couldn’t prove the bills were from their machines.
Last month a retrial (重审) for Xu’s case was held in Guangzhou. The life sentence was cut to five years. Xu also has to return the money and pay a 20,000-yuan fine (罚款).
“Xu’s deed is not as serious as other violent theft. But he to ok advantage of the faulty ATM and stole the money using his bank card,” said the judge.
“Xu’s experience rings a bell of honesty for each of us. Just like you can’t
steal from other people’s houses just because their lock is broken. The sense of morality (道德) is the key to a harmonious (和谐的) society,” said a comment on Financial News.
68. What is the correct meaning of the word “pocketing” in the first paragraph?
A. putting something into one’s pocket.

A. his father told the judge Xu was not a bad child
B. what Xu did doesn’t ha ve as a bad effect as other violent theft

D. Xu had handed in the money that did not belong to him

Does the contemporary music press give jazz the coverage it deserves?
---- An interview with Wynton Marsalis, a noted jazz musician
71. There were the older jazz musicians who hung around our house when I was young.
I saw how much they practiced, how serious they were about their art. I knew then
I had to work just as hard if I wanted to succeed. Of course, my father inspired me
a lot, and many teachers took the time to nurture my talent and the talents of other students in our school.
72. Yes. We’ve done such a poor job with music education because, as a society, we haven’t maintained the kind of education that a true artist and musician needs. Young
people haven’t been able to equate romance and talent with music. For instance, most of the people who make it in the music industry today have to look good. How they sound is secondary. Sarah Vaughan, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald —those big, romantic queens of jazz music wouldn’t make it in today’s music industry, and that’s
a shame. We need to teach young people about the alternatives.
73. The music press has so much to introduce these days, and jazz is just a small fraction of it. Because some people are intimidated by jazz, they don’t cover it unless it’s a big name. new jazz musicians don’t get much of break. A lot of editors don’t say anything about jazz these days unless it’s Marsalis. That’s a shame. What VH1 is doing with their Save the Music campaign is phenomenal. They’re getting all these instruments out to needy kids. It’s the kind of thing all networks should be doing
