“Good news,” Mom said, with a bright smile on her face. "The Parker family wants Surfer. They'll be here in an hour to take him home. ” Surfer had been with us for two days. While I was sad at the thought of seeing him go, I knew I couldn't keep him.
My family operate a foster home(收养所)for pets. Surfer had been in an animal shelter, and he was sent to us so we could place him with a loving family. Surfer was a cute puppy, so finding a home for him had been very easy. Dad entered Surfer's information into a pet adoption website, along with some photos, and within a few hours, the Parkers applied to adopt him. Mom looked over their application, and they seemed like responsible people, so she called them.
However, not every dog was so lucky. Zooey was nine years old, and she'd been with us for a few months. It seemed like nobody wanted to adopt an older dog. Dad said that was a shame because older dogs made wonderful companions. Zooey's previous owner had treated her terribly, and when she was sent to us she was injured. I remember how angry Dad seemed at the time. "No dog should be treated like t hat,“ he said.
When Zooey came to us, she was upset around everyone. She barked at our two dogs as if in defense and backed away when I tried to approach her. But with our considerate care, it wasn't long before Zooey trusted us. I took her on walks around the neighborhood and got her used to other people and dogs. She took a real liking to Surfer. In fact, they often curled together as they napped(打盹).
The Parkers soon arrived, and we all went into the backyard so they could meet with Surfer. Zooey followed us out, her tail wagging lazily, as Surfer rolled in the grass with the two Parker children.

A friend of mine whose name was Martin Brown had a bad memory, which made him really famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a
sentence. His wife had to always remind him about his appointments, his classes or even his meals! Since Martin was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness often caused him a lot
of trouble. It wasn't that he was unintelligent, as some critical people tended to say, he was just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Professor Brown decided to take his children to the beach. The seaside town he planned to visit was about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he decided to keep the name of the town secret. Unfortunately, by the time Martin had arrived at the train station, the poor forgetful man had forgotten the name of the town. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Martin went back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him back again so soon, but she laughed when she heard what was the matter. She distrusted his memory, so she wrote the name of the town on a piece of paper. Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later, she was astonished to see him outside the house again.

“Yes,” replied Mrs Dean, “but you must take Rover with you.”
Susie brought her little basket and her mother put up a nice lunch for her. She tied down the cover, and fastened a tin cup to it
The little girl called Rover-a great Newfoundland dog and gave him a tin pail to carry. “If I bring it home full, mamma,” she said. “Won’t you make some berry cakes for tea?”

Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying (偏离)far from Susie.
The tin pail (锡桶)was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry, and thought she would eat her lunch.

“There ’ Rove r, run away! There's a good dog.” she said; but Rover staid near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes.

After dinner, Susie played a while by the by the brook. She threw sticks into the water, and Rover swam in and brought them back. Then she began to pick berries again.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was
my cousin.By the age of 19,Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota.I wanted to be exactly like him.So when Steve asked me to
go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota,I was excited!
After planning the trip,we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our
great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota
by early evening. On our way to the campsite,Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station(护林站)where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk,we reached the campsite and set up the camp
as the sun was setting.Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest,he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup.I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough,we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about
our plans for fishing the next day.We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up;the temperature dropped and it began to snow.Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent.He dragged a log(原木)from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil(铝箔)around the log.The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent.Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire.I was abruptly awakened by
Steve. Our tent was on fire.Frightened,I ran out of the tent immediately. The
tent collapsed with Steve inside.

At noon that day,I drove back home early.Just as I entered the living room,I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs- it was the sound of my favorite violin. "Thief!" I thought to myself.
I dashed upstairs.Sure enough,as expected,a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance,l found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then,I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile.I asked, "Are you Mr.Ram's nephew,Michael?I'm his housekeeper. Two years ago,I heard his his nephew living in the countryside would come.It must be you."
On hearing my words, the boy was astonished, but then he said quickly, "Has my uncle gone out?I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him in a while."
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, "Do you like to play the violin so much?"
"Yes.but I'm so poor that I can't afford one," the boy replied.
"Then,I give this violin to you." The boy looked at me doubtfully, but he picked up the violin.Going out to the living room,he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily(不由自主的;一停地) trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.

When Surfer got tired, he wandered back to Zooey. Zooey still wagged its tail lazily and sniffed around Surfer, while Surfer curled around Zooey, without any intention to leave with the Parkers. When it was time to leave, Dad called Surfer gently and guided him to the Parkers' car. However, Surfer followed Dad unwillingly, turning around to gaze at Zooey. Meanwhile, Zooey
rushed towards Surfer, barking in sadness as if they would never meet again. The Parkers and our family all are unwilling to see this scene. Dad told Zooey's story to Mr. and Mrs. Parker. Paragraph 2:
Mr. and Mrs. Parker asked if they could adopt Zooey too. "Are you sure? Dad asked. "Absolutely!" Mr. Parker nodded. "She has been through a lot. I'd hate to separate her from her best friend." Hearing this, the children both cracked into smiles, because they knew this was the best ending for the two dogs. Zooey and Surfer suddenly rushed to each other and curled together as if they understood the agreement, with tails wagging crazily to show their happiness.
