1.Some people think reading stories in books is better than watching TV or playing computer games for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
For years, reading books has been a dominated way of entertainment for children. However, with the popularity of various electronic devices, children can also spend their leisure time watching TV and playing computer games. I partly agree with the view held by some people that reading stories in books is a better use of time than watching TV or playing computer games.
Admittedly, TV and computer games appear to be more stimulating and engaging since they combine auditory and visual information together. The well-designed visual animation, recorded music, together with flexible interactions of electronic activities could easily attract children’s attention and stimulate their study interest. For example, some educational channels on TV not only provide entertainment but also impart knowledge and information.
Nevertheless, the benefits of reading in books could outweigh those of watching TV or playing electronic games to some extent. Firstly, books expand imagination. To be more specific, books allows children themselves to make up the character’s voices and paint the pictures in their own way rather than sitting in front of a screen and simply enjoying the directors’ painting. Therefore, during the reading process, enough imagination space are there for children to develop their creative thinking and even critical thinking.
In addition, books, though not always even in quality, are far more psychologically beneficial than TV or video games. Compared to TV or video games, to which children could easily become addicted, book can really be paused since readers could pick right back up where they left off. Moreover, books are ends in themselves. Compared with TV and computer games that are created mainly for the entertainment purpose, books are written not for the purpose of achieving something else but only to communicate great ideas of life, of death, of struggle. Given this kind of
nature, books are a better way for children to get positive values and knowledge. Thus, without addiction and negative information, books could provide children healthy grow up.
In conclusion, even though children are fond of electronic activities more than books, I am convinced that TV and video games pale in comparison with books and children should spent more time on reading.
2.Some people say that playing computer games is bad for children in every aspect. Others say that playing computer games can have positive effects on the way children develop. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Playing computer games are easily blamed by some people as the reason why children become violent or commit extreme anti-social behavior. However, others find that computer games can actually have many benefits. In my opinion, the merits of allowing children to play on-line games outweigh the possible demerits.
Indeed, on no account can we overlook the potential drawbacks triggered by computer games. Firstly, many computer and video games are very violent, and this violence can affect children in many ways. Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and decreased prosocial helping. Meanwhile, excessive use of computer games makes children socially isolated since they may spend less time in other activities such as sports, extracurricular events, and interacting with family and friends. Computer games may also have bad effects on some children’s health, including obesity, computer-induced seizures, and postural, muscular and skeletal disorders. Lastly, academic achievement may be negatively related to over-all time spent playing computer games. The more time children spend playing computer games, the poorer is their performance in school. In particular, computer games addicts are more likely to skip their homework to play games, argue a lot with their teachers, and fight a lot with their friends.
Contrary to the above viewpoint, others think that gaming has numerous benefits on the way children develop. An argument hold by some people is that playing computer games can improve attention and concentration. An action game, for example, are able to capture the players’ attention for the entire period of the game since certain objectives within the game need to be achieved. Further, playing games could enhance multitasking skill. In strategy games, for instance, while developing a city, an unexpected surprise like an enemy might emerge. This requires players to be very observant and forces the player to be flexible and quickly change tactics. In addition, some argue that playing computer games help develop children’s intelligence and teamwork spirit. Many multiplayer games involve cooperation with other
online players in order to win and these games encourage players to make the most of their individual skills to contribute to the team.
Overall, playing computer games can be a double-edged sword for children. Computer games could be detrimental both physically and psychologically. However, children can benefit from computer games if they limit the time spent on gaming and avoid those extremely violent ones.
3.Some people think that the governments of developing countries should introduce new technology to improve the quality of life, while some people believe that the best way is to develop education. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
As the 21st century approaches with science and technology assuming increasing importance in society, some people argue that the governments of developing countries should priories the investment in new technology. However, in the presence of limited budgets, others think that education is the best way to improve the quality of life. I agree with the latter given that education is a fundamental driver of both personal and national development. Admittedly, for those developing countries whose majority is still suffering from the lack of basic material, technology can certainly increase the qualities of their lives. Firstly, advances in technology could cause increase in efficiency and production. To be more specific, it helps reduce or eliminate duplications and delays in the workflow, as well as help people speed up by automating specific tasks. Secondly, technology can lead to improvements in physical health and comfort. For example, medical technology could bring about lower infant mortality, cures for diseases, and improvements for health and social care. Lastly, technology could improve the quality of life by allowing people to interact and learn and share information online. For instance, Facebook, a popular social networking tool, enables people from all over the world to connect with each other, and updating Facebook status more often can help a person diminish feelings of loneliness.
However, others argue that education is one of the most important duties of governments of developing countries. One argument is that allocating more resources to education can put people on a path towards good health, empowerment and employment. A healthy, confident and highly educated workforce is a huge attraction for employers, business, and large organizations. In addition, investment in education is not only good for individuals but also beneficial for nations in the long-term. Citizens who benefit from the improved education systems could in return accelerate the development of their country by making innovations and attracting resources from other countries. On the contrary, inadequate education produces high costs for society in terms of public spending, crime, health, and economic
growth. No country can afford to leave too many of its children behind and not to help them achieve the competencies needed for a self-fulfilled life in economic independence.
To sum up, both technology and education could enhance the quality of life, but given the scarcity of governments’ budget, I think more funds should be allocated towards education in order to gain long-run benefits for individuals and for the whole economy.。
