A BIG hairy spider with eight legs moving slowly on the floor can make many people hold out their arm s and shout, “It was that big!” However, a new study in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders has shown that if people are afraid of spiders, they might see the animals as much larger than they really are.Scientists from Ohio State
University, US, tested 57 people who were afraid of spiders. These people saw spiders of different sizes (2 to 15 centimeters wide) five times in an eight-week period. In the first experiment, people stood over three meters away from a box containing a spider, and moved closer to it. When they were next to the box, they had to guide the spider around by touching it with a stick. Throughout the experiment, they reported to the scientists how afraid they were feeling on a scale of 0-100.Afterwards, scientists took the spiders out of the room. People were asked to draw a single line to show how long the spider was. Researchers found that the more fear the person had while seeing the spider, the larger they guessed it to be. Even during other experiments, when people looked directly at the spider while drawing the line, they still drew a line larger than the spider’s actual size. Scientist Michael Vasey, of Ohio State University, told the Guardian: “In this case, the feared spider is seen as being bigger. And that may serve as a factor for the fear.”The findings of the study may help doctors to give effective treatment for such fears, and to help patients overcome them.
31. The study shows that people are afraid of spiders ______.
A. with big mouths
B. of large size
C. with long noses
D. of dark colors
32 People tested in Ohio State University were asked to see spiders ______.
A. 2-15 centimeters wide
B. for as long as eight weeks’ time
C. of five different sizes

33. Which is TRUE according to the text?
A. Scientists used a box with a spider and a stick in it for the first experiment.
B. People had to draw the actual spider that they had seen.
C. The less afraid the person felt while seeing the spider, the longer the line he
drew.
D. The results of the study may be helpful for treating people’s fear of spiders

Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even
if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don't understand the culture behind it.
For example, if an American boy asks his mother what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say "I'll play it by ear", that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later. "Play by ear" used to mean playing music using the sheet music, but now people often use it when they're not talking about music.
There're many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, "Give me a hand", you don't necessarily stretch out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It's not about the color of your hand! You're a green hand when you are very new at your work and don't have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two definitely work together very well.
Can you guess the meanings of some common English idioms to do with parts of your body?
34. If a mother says "I'll play it by ear" to talk about the dinner, she means _______.
A. she will cook dinner while listening to music at the same time
B. she doesn't hear what others are talking about.
C. she will play music using the sheet music instead of cooking dinner
D. She doesn't have plans for dinner and will decide later
35. When one says "Can you give me a hand?", he means _______.
A. he needs to hold your hand.
B. he works well with you
C. he needs your help
D. he is a new comer and can't help with the situation
36 Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People use English idioms more in spoken English than in written English.
B. To understand the culture behind an idiom is important in understanding
the idiom.
C. Idioms make your English more vivid and colorful so they are easy to remember.
D. You may not understand an idiom even though you know the meaning of each word.
37. Here are 4 common English idioms to do with parts of your body and their meanings. Can you match them?
1) to learn something by heart a. to depend on oneself
2) to have sticky fingers b. to know something very well
3) to stand on one's own feet c. to do something secretly
4) to go behind someone's back d. to have the habit of stealing
A. b a d c
B. b d a c
C. c b a d D .c d b a

Alice was now in a long dark room with doors all round the walls, and she could not see the White Rabbit anywhere.
She tried to open the doors, but they were all locked(锁上).
“How will I ever get out again?” she thought sadly. Then she saw a little glass table with three legs, and on the top of it was a very small gold key. Alice quickly took the key and tried it in all the doors, but she couldn’t open any.

“I’d like to be out there-not in this dark room. Why can’t I get smaller?” It was already a very strange day, and Alice was beginning to think that anything was possible.
After a while she locked the door again, got up and went back to the glass table.
She put the key down and then she saw a little bottle on the table. Round the neck of the bottle was a piece of paper with the words DRINK ME in large letters.
“It can be dangerous to drink out of strange bottles,” she said. “What will it do to me?” She drank a little bit very slowly. The taste was very nice and very soon Alice finished the bottle.
“ I think I’m getting smaller and smaller every second.” And she was. “And now, ” she said happily, “ I can get through the little door into that beautiful gar den.”
She ran at once to the door. Then she remembered that the little gold key was back on the glass table. She ran back to the table for it, but she was now much too small! The key was high above her, on top of the table. She tried very hard to climb up the table leg, but she couldn’t do it.
At last, tired and unhappy, she got angry with herself. Soon she saw a little glass box near her on the floor. She opened it, and found a very small cake with the words EAT ME on it.
Nothing could surprise Alice now.

(10分,每小题2分)
Every day 25 million U. S. children ride school buses.
The safety record for these buses is much better than for
passenger cars; but nevertheless, about 10 children are killed each year riding on large school buses, and nearly four times that number are killed outside buses in the loading zones. By and large, however, the nation's school children are transported to and from school safely.
Even though the number of school bus casualties(死亡人数) is not large, the safety of children is always of intense(高度的) public concern. While everyone wants to
see children transported safely, people are grouped about what needs to be done—particularly whether seat belts should be mandatory (强制性的).
Supporters of seat belts on school buses argue that seat belts are necessary not only to reduce death and injury, but also to teach children lessons about the importance of using them in any moving vehicle. On the other hand, they point out that seat belts help keep children in their seats, away from the bus driver.
Opponents of seat belt installation(安装) suggest that children are already well protected by the school buses that follow the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) safety requirement set in 1977. They also believe that many children won't wear seat belts anyway, and that they may damage(损害) the belts or use them to hurt other children.
A new Research Council report on school bus safety suggests that there are some other safety devices and procedures that may be more effective(有效的) and less expensive. For example, a research suggested that raising seat backs four inches may have the same safety effectiveness as seat belts.
