Frank works at a school called Tumul K’in, which means "New Day" in the local language, Mayan Mopan. The school was founded in 2001 by Belizean Filiber to Penados, who received funding (基金) from the United Nations for the project. Frank says there are about 60 students in five grades at the school, and that they range from 12 to 20 years old. It is different from other schools in the area, he says. While most schools train youths for work that will take them away from their villages, Tumul K’in teaches them skills they can use locally, such as farming, and various trades. "The difference is that students at Tumul K’in learn everything from maths and science to agricultural practices and how to raise (饲养) livestock (家畜),"he says. "The main idea is to help maintain (维持) the Mayan lifestyle of village living and pass it on to the next generation." As for the radio station, Frank says that the effort is part of a program originally funded by the U. N. Development Program. "The radio station has been named "Ak’Kutan FM", or "New Day FM". It will broadcast health information, such as where people can get tested for HIV, as well as report local and national news," he says. For most, it will be the first contact with the global community for Mayans in this remote village. "I can’t stress enough how little contact many villagers have had with the outside world," Frank says. "Many have never left their villages or seen things like telephones, refrigerators or even world maps."

Studies show that smoking is unhealthy. Even being around a smoker can be unhealthy. So-called "second-hand smoke" is especially bad for children. The California Senate is considering a bill(法案)that would make it a crime to smoke in a car with children inside. This law would be called SB7. The author of the bill is a democratic senator (民主党参议员). The senator thinks adults should be fined $100 for each violation, and believes that this would make them think twice about smoking with kids in the car.
People who don’t like this bill say that it gives the government too much control over what they do. These critics are calling it a "nanny (保姆) government" measure.
A republican senator is one of them. He does not think that the government should tell people what they can or cannot do in their homes or cars. He also believes that the bill violates parents’rights. He says that he knows smoking can be dangerous, and does not allow smoking in his car when his grandchildren are inside. Still, he believes the decision should be left up to the parents.
The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has not said whether he would sign the bill or not to make it a law. When asked what he thinks about adults smoking in cars with children inside, he said that he thinks it’s terrible.
50. The democratic senator is promoting SB 7 in order to ______.
A. stop smoking in cars
B. punish smokers
C. protect children’s health
D. prohibit second-hand smoke
51. Why are some people against SB 7?

B. It denies p eople their right to choose.
C. It limits the government’s power.
D. It turns the government into a nanny.
52. What do we learn about Arnold Schwarzenegger?
A. He hesitates to make SB 7 law.
B. He would not sign the bill.
C. He agrees that adults should not smoke in cars with kids inside.
D. He doesn’t know whether he should sign the bill or not.
C
People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a large British study.
Although the reasons are unclear, researchers say lack of sleep appears to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to increase the risk of heart attack.
A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleeping from seven hours a night to five or less increased their death rate 1.7 times and more than doubled the risk of cardiovascular (心脏血管的) death.
The findings show the danger of busy modern lifestyles, Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine, said in an interview: "A third of the population of the U.K. and over 40 percent in the U.S. regularly sleep less than five hours a night, so it is a serious problem. And social pressure to cut down on sleep in order to work more may not be good —particularly if you go below five hours." Previous research has already emphasized the health risks of shift (轮班) work and disturbed sleep. But the study by Cappuccio, which was supported by British government and U.S. funding, is the first to link duration (持续时间) of sleep to death rates.
The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years at two points in their lives —1985-88 and 1992-93 —and then tracked (追踪) their death rates until 2004.The results show that the relation with cardiovascular risk in those who slept less in the 1990s was clearer than in the 1980s, but, curiously, there was also a higher death rate in people who increased their sleeping to more than nine hours. In this case, however, there was no cardiovascular link, and Cappuccio said it was possible that longer sleeping could be related to other health problems, such as depression.
"In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is the healthiest," he said.
53. Cappuccio’s sta tements in the interview show that ___.
A. a busy modern lifestyle is bad for people
B. current pressures are encouraging people to give up sleep
C. people’s health may be in danger because of busy modern lifestyles
D. cutting down on sleep in order to work hard should be praised
54. What do we learn from Cappuccio’s study?
A. The British and American governments provided the study with financial aid.
B. People in the 1980s face higher cardiovascular risk than people in the 1990s.
C. Sleeping too long may also be unhealthy.
D. Sleeping too long increases cardiovascular risk.
55. From the passage, we can infer that ______.
A. everyone should sleep around seven hours per night
B. shift work can increase health problems
C. Capppuccio was the first to study the relation between sleep and health
D. sleeping more than nine hours will lead to depression

What is noise pollution and is it dangerous?
Sound is very important in our daily lives. Most of us get information and know what’s happening around us by the sounds we hear. We talk with other people and listen to radio and television broadcasts for music, news, and enjoyment. Sound can be useful and pleasing or it can be unpleasant, and damaging to our ears. Unwanted, harmful sounds are called noise pollution.
The movements of people, animals, machines, and other things cause pressure waves in the air. If these pressure waves are within a certain range(范围) of frequencies(频率), our ears believe that it is sound. Sound waves are like the waves in a lake when you throw a stone. The bigger the stone, the bigger the waves. And that’s how sound works. Big sounds cause lager waves.
Scientists measure these sound waves in decibels(分贝). To be heard by humans, a sound wave must measure at least ten decibels. When these waves reach a high number of decibels, our ears start to hurt and damage can occur. If you’ve been around loud noises for several hours, you may have experienced damage. It’s important to know the danger signal: ringing in your ears.
Keep your ears safe---be careful what you hear!
