22.(8分)Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar
challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study,Patrick C.M.Wong,said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
1、When learning Chinese,a foreigner will find ________.
A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time
B.he has an easier time learning music at the same time
C.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
2、Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
3、The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “____”.
A.created B.spelled C.seemed D.pronounced
4、What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
23.(8分)Scientists think they have answered a mystery: How some ocean creatures got so huge so quickly.
A few million years ago, the largest whales, averaged about 15 feet long. Then seemingly overnight, one type of whale, the toothless baleen whale(须鲸类)became huge. Modern blue whales get as big as 100 feet. Nicholas Pyenson of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum said, “Why is that?” ”It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye, which makes it ha rder to figure out what happened,” said Graham Slater, lead author of the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 to 5 million years started it, changing the oceans and food supply for whales.
The researchers used fossil records of the smaller whales to create a family tree for baleen whales which include blue whales, humpbacks and right whales. Using computer simulations(模拟)and knowledge about how evolution works, they concluded that when the size changes started, the poles got colder, ice expanded and the water circulation in the oceans changed and winds shifted, Slater and Pyenson said cold water went deep and moved closer to the equator(赤道)and then eventually moved back up with small fish and other small animals that whales eat.
Baleen whale, which have no teeth, feed by eating huge amounts of fish they capture. Toothed whales, like sperm whales (抹香鲸), hunt individual fish, so the ocean chants that made food less evenly spread out didn’t affect them as much. But baleen whales hunt schools of fish.
Olivier Lambert at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences calls it “a really convincing situation”. But he said the lack of fossils in certain time periods is an issue. As oceans warm from man-made climate change, the seas will be more like it was when the whales smaller and they will have a more difficult time surviving.
1、What does the author mean by “It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye” in the second paragraph? A.The change of baleen whales happened too quickly.
B.The change of baleen whales was too difficult to explore.
C.Researchers paid little attention to the change of baleen whales.
D.Researchers thought the change of baleen whales was unimportant.
2、What played the key role in baleen whales’ becoming huge?
A.Man-made climate change.
B.Its eating a huge amount of fish.
C.The water circulation in the oceans.
D.The increase of food supply for whales.
3、What do we know about sperm whales and blue whales according to the text?
A.Sperm whales eat more food.
B.Blue whaler live much longer.
C.Sperm whales prefer to hunt schools of fish.
D.Blue whales usually swallow schools of fish.
4、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.There are no whale fossils now.
B.The whales may become even bigger.
C.Global warming has threatened the whales.
D.Olivier Lamber thinks the study is perfect.
24.(8分)Endless queues and long waits at the ticket inspection desks at China’s major train stations were signature of the Spring Festival travel rush before this year. Every year, as the country’s biggest national holiday unfolded a huge flow of travelers would leave staff at the check-in desks facing a dilemma.
But with the installment (安装) of artificial intelligence (AI) in dozens of train stations this year, including a facial recognition system which is able to process passenger identification within five seconds and therefore speed up the waiting process, busy scenes started to become something of the past.
When a passenger approaches the camera inside the facial recognition system at the station, it scans his face and then quickly compares it with the photograph shown on his identification card in real time. If the information matches, the barrier gates will open and allow the passenger to go through.
Such use of facial recognition technology is in line with discussions heard at the recent two sessions meeting, a key annual political event, which focused on the widespread application of a security network named Tianwang (“Sky Net” in English) currently being used by China’s publi c security department.
The network, according to reports by the People Daily, has the potential to recognize the facial features of anyone in the world and match them on the spot with photographs on a database of criminal suspects. In fact, it can analyze photographic identity so quickly that it can scan every single Chinese face on the planet in just one second, and it would only take two seconds to scan every face in the world, with an accuracy rate of up to 99.8 percent.
Those are just two examples that highlight the development of Chinese visual AI technology, which industry insiders predict could contribute to powerful growth in the global technology sector this year.
1、What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the following topic of the passage.
B.To describe the Spring Festival.
C.To inform readers of the development of China.
D.To explain the dilemma of the staff.
2、What’s the solution to the Spring Festival travel rush?
A.Using artificial intelligence.
B.Opening more barrier gates.
C.Limiting the number of passengers.
D.Increasing more staff at the check-in desks.
3、What can we know about facial recognition technology?
A.Its application leads to a heated discussion.
B.Its application is useless to policemen.
C.Its operating speed is not yet high enough.
D.Its accuracy rate is very high.
4、What’s the author’s attitude towards Chinese visual AI technology?
A.Depressed. B.Positive.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
25.(10分)When you travel in South America, you'd better pay attention to the following three kinds of dangerous South American animals.
Piranhas (水虎鱼)
Although only a small number of piranhas are considered to be dangerous to humans, the red-bellied piranha is definitely one of those. Evidence has shown that a large group of piranhas can absolutely eat a herd of large animals crossing the river, leaving only bones. This fish lives in the freshwater streams of South America, and they can smell the blood from far away and launch attacks swiftly. It is said that they are only dangerous to humans if the water volumes are less and lower.
Anacondas (水蟒)
This South American monster of a creature often appears in the films or your nightmares! They have weighed over 230 kilograms. It is often considered to be the biggest snake in t he world. You certainly don’t want to get caught alone with this snake due to its method of attacking and killing its victim. It is indeed a remarkably different brand of snake type as it regularly coils (缠绕) around all over its target, increasing the pressure until eventually its victim dies. Its jaws are powered by large muscles that produce enough power for its over 100 sharp teeth to pass through the thick skin of an crocodile. They don't have poison. Sometimes they prefer to camouflage themselves so they look like their surroundings and swiftly draw back when humans are near.
Golden Poisonous Frogs
The golden poison from might be the most-deadly of the South American animals, which is protected by means of poison. This very small frog, less than 55 mm in length, packs enough punch (效力)to take down of African bull elephants. This apparently harmless frog has always been known to have killed people who have touched it directly. It’s also been noted that chicken and dogs have died by connecting things on which a golden poison frog had wandered! In intense colors, they normally look attractive to their targets.
1、(小题1)What can we learn about piranhas from the passage?
A.Piranhas are the most dangerous animals.
B.Piranhas like to live in the deep seabed.
C.Piranhas may attack human beings when the water level is low
D.Piranhas only attack human beings when they cross the river in groups
2、(小题2)How does an anaconda kill its victim according to the passage?
A.It often uses its poison to kill its victim.
B.It often uses its strength to kill its victim.
C.It kills its victim mainly using its powerful teeth.
D.It kills its victim with the help of other snakes.
3、(小题3)The underlined word “camouflage” in Paragraph 3 means “”.
A.hide itself by appearing like the surroundings
B.terrify and capture the enemy by making much noise
C.move around to search for delicious food
D.give off harmful gas to kill the targets
4、(小题4)Chicken and dogs are mentioned in Paragraph 4 to show that .
A.no animals can survive the poison of the golden poison frog
B.they like to wander along the path of the golden poison frog
C.the golden poison frog likes eating them most
D.the poison of the golden poison frog is deadly

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、In recent years, many parents choose to accompany their children in studying, which has aroused a wide concern.
These parents are willing to leave their hometown, even quit their jobs to follow their children into the campus. Most of them rent an apartment nearby so as to take good care of their children. Parents consider it necessary to offer a better living condition to the kids. Meanwhile, it can allow them to keep track of the kids’ academic performance.
Nevertheless, what they’ve i gnored is that it will get their kids into the habit of being dependent. Thus, they will never develop the ability of self-control in the future. Trust leads to independence. So it seems to me that parents should create room for children’s growth and study, in order to ensure their overall development.。
