“You can use me as a last resort(选择),and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.”This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids’lacrosse(长曲棍球) club.
I guess that there’s probably some demanding work schedule,or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings.I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on...At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright.Yes,I’ll do it.”
I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts.Somewhere along the way,the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season.Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more:Connecting to the community(社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills,or services provides a real joy.V olunteering just feels so good.
In that sense,I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However,if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?
24.What can we infer about the parent from her reply in Paragraph 1?
A.She knows little about the club.
B.She isn’t good at sports.
C.She just doesn’t want to volunteer.
D.She’s unable to meet her schedule.
根据第一段第一句“You can use me as a last resort(选择),and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.”
25.What does the underlined phrase “tug at the heartstrings” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Encourage teamwork.

D.Provide advice.

26.What can we learn about the parent from Paragraph 3?

B.She is proud of her kids.
C.She’ll work for another season.

A.It gives her a sense of duty.
B.It makes her very happy.
C.It enables her to work hard.
D.It brings her material rewards.
根据第四段最后两句“Connecting to the community(社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills,or services provides a real joy.V olunteering just feels so good.”

This week,a mammoth(猛犸象) possibly killed by humans 10,000 to 15,000 years ago was found in soy fields about 50 miles west of Detroit. It was found by farmer James Bristle and his neighbor Trent Satterthwaite, who were reportedly digging in the field. At first, they couldn’t 1figure out what they were seeing.
“It was probably a rib bone that came up,” Bristle tells Ann Arbor News.“We thought it was a bent fence 9post.” Upon closer 6inspection,however,it became clear even to untrained eyes this was no fence post.“We knew it was something special.” Then they sped up the dig.
After finding the bones Monday night,Bristle called the University of Michigan Tuesday morning to report his find.Scientist Daniel Fisher arrived to inspect it Wednesday, and by Thursday morning he had 2confirmed it’s a woolly mammoth. He concludes the animal was about 40 years old when it died.It was hunted by humans,he says, who killed it and stored the remains in a pond as a way of 7preserving the meat for future use. It’s 4still too early to tell exactly how it died,Fisher tells Detroit’s WWJ-TV,“but the skeleton showed signs of human’s butchering.”
11The bones are being 3temporarily stored nearby, according to the Free Press, and it remains unclear where they’ll eventually end up.Their research value will be determined once they’ve been cleaned and dried.
Woolly mammoths once lived in Eurasia and North America, and most disappeared by 10,000 years ago—a demise(终止) that has been linked not only to humans, but also to changing
climate. It’s now believed that warming weather 8weakened their populations before humans dealt the final blows.

Barcelona’s famous Segrada Familia is finally set to get a building licence,137 years after work on the still uncompleted church began.
12Construction on the UNESCO World Heritage basilica(长方形基督教堂),which is Barcelona’s most visited tourist attraction, began in 1882 based on a design by architect Francisco Lozano. However, when he stepped down, architect Antoni Gaudi took over the design in 1883.The building won’t be finished until 2026—one hundred years after the architect was killed by a streetcar in the city. His body was buried in a room under the floor of the Sagrada Familia.
To get its paperwork rubber 10stamped,the church authorities have agreed to finally pay the
government a36 million fee for a building permit.Gaudi was told to get the paperwork processed, but the architect failed to do so—proceeding with construction regardless. The money from the church’s permit will be used to upgrade transport links and beautify the area.Gaudi and his works have become symbols of Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia, northeast Spain.
Gaudi played an active role in directing the construction of the Sagrada Familia until his death in 1926.He would often request that work be modified and adjusted until it was exactly what he had in mind.However,5interpretation of the designs by present day architects is particularly challenging because of the nature of the existing designs.

A
Connecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology.Tasks that once required an operator, postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on your screen, and you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught
up in a dilemma by violating certain new rules for communicating.A big one for some:Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call. But that’s just the beginning.
“I’m usually pretty chill and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle,a 29-year-old office manager from White Plains,New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message—“K.”“At the very least reply with,‘Got it.’”he said,“At least give me a few words here. You’re not that busy.”
There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands,of others who have taken to social media to express their distaste for people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.
“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James Ivory, professor of communication at Virginia Tech.In the same way that generations and small groups of friends have their own slang and customs,Internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings that have their own unique set of routine.
But not everyone gets the point.Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.
“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness of the body language,” Ivory said,“People immediately fill that gap by using emoji(表情符号) to sum up a feeling in seconds.”
“There’s great potential for danger,”Ivory warned.“What’s considered polite in one form might be inappropriate or rude in another occasion.”
1.What can you infer about Mark from Paragraph 2?
A.He is a businessman with a bad temper.
B.He complains about social manners.
C.He can’t bear one-word messages.
D.He dislikes a busy business life.
由第二段第二句“But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message—‘K.’”
2.According to the text, which of the following breaks the rules of communicating?
A.John says “I got it.” to his boss face to face.
B.Jim calls Bill without confirming in advance.
C.Mary texts Lily to make sure if she can call her.
D.Jack sends “Thanks a lot” to his business friends.
由第一段倒数第二句“Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call.”
3.Why may people misunderstand each other during digital communication?
A.Emoji cannot sum up feelings.
B.People use their own slang and customs.
C.There are large quantities of written rules.
D.People get wrong messages without clear clues.
由第五段中的“Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.”
4.What are people expected to do after reading the passage?
A.To obey their own digital communication rules.
B.To be aware of rules during digital communication.
C.To use advancing technology even with disadvantages.
D.To keep pace with digital communication development.
