Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technol ogy companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly.
“Most people actually speak several languages —it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and
in the process creating something new.
24. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. English is a common language around the world.
B. There are now many different language styles.
C. English language is developing with the Internet.
D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language.
25. Which of the following is NOT true about online communication?
A. People need to spell exactly.
B. Grammar is not so important.
C. People do not care about their accent.
D. Most English-speakers are not native speakers.
26. What can we infer from the text?
A. We can only communicate online in English.
B. It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.
C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.
D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.
27. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said?
A. The other languages are enriching English.
B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages.
C. English will become the only language in the world.
D. Chinese used to be the world’s common language.
C
There is a restaurant in my Maine town that has done little to update itself over the past 80 years. This is part of its charm, as is the wooden phone booth that sits neglected (忽略) in the age of the cellphone. Ah, the phone booth. We need it now more than ever.
For me it symbolizes that phone calls were once private affairs, even if the information being shared was not sensitive in any way. It was simply assumed that a phone conversation was meant for two people, and two people only.
Growing up in the 1960s, we had only phone in the house. As a kid, I didn’t get, or make
many calls because all my friends live within earshot and I could just yell out the window if I wanted their attention. I do, however, remember answering the phone, asking for the identity of the caller, and then handing the phone to my mom. She’d take it, say “Hello, Mrs…one moment please,” and then as she placed her hand over the receiver, she turned to me, and directed, “This is for me. Why don’t you go outside and play?”
Flash forward to what cellphones have done to our life. Within the space of a few years, overhearing private conversations seems to be normal. Not long ago I was sitting in Boston’s South Station, near a man who was on his cellphone, waiting for my train.
The following is what the man had to say, “Yes, that’s right. The red and yellow roses.” Then he continued to recite his card number and deadline. I stared at the fellow. He glanced at me and asked, “What?” My response was immediate: I recited his card num ber back to him, along with the deadline.
There is no longer a sense of personal borders or limits. The cellphone has become a megaphone (扩音器), and I have been privy (私下知情) to details of people’s lives that I would rather not know. Maybe phone booths could serve as cellphone harbors today.
28. What feature does the restaurant in Maine town have?
A. It is very popular.
B. It is old-fashioned.
C. It will close down.
D. It has been neglected.
29. As a kid, the author __________.
A. had few friends
B. often called his friends
C. was not allowed to answer the phone
D. learned that phone conversations are private
30. What is the author’s attitude towards cellphone?
A. Critical.
B. Tolerate.
C. Optimistic.
D. Approving.
31. What did the author do in Boston’s South Station?
A. He talked to an old friend.
B. He bought some colorful roses.
C. He overheard a man’s personal information.
D. He helped a stranger who was making a call.
D
Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein’s jobs is guarding an industry behind the plastic shopping bag.
Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts (收银台). The bags are banned in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Seeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people think.
Among the bag makers’ reasons: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today.
The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.
Environmentalists do not dispute (质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.
32.What has Steven Stein been hired to do?
A. Help increase grocery sales.
B. Recycle the waste material.
C. Stop things falling off trucks.
D. Argue for the use of plastic bags.
33. What does the word “headwinds” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Bans on plastic bags.
B. Effects of city development.
C. Headaches caused by garbage.
D. Plastic bags in trees.
34. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers?
A. They are quite expensive.
B. Replacing them can be difficult.
C. They are less strong than plastic bags.
D. Producing them requires more energy.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Plastic, Paper or Neither
B. Industry, Pollution and Environment
C. Recycle or Throw Away
D. Garbage Collection and Waste Control
