Weekend Volunteering at Sunny Acres Nursing Home

This past weekend, instead of lounging around watching TV or scrolling through social media like I usually do, I decided to get out and do something meaningful with my time. My school has a community service program where students can sign up to volunteer at various organizations around town. When I saw that Sunny Acres Nursing Home was one of the options, I immediately put my name down.

I've always had a warm spot in my heart for the elderly ever since I was young and my grandparents would watch me during the summers. The bond between grandchild and grandparent is truly special. As I've gotten older though, I've come to appreciate just how difficult aging can be, both physically and mentally. Many elderly individuals require around-the-clock care and assistance with even the most basic of daily tasks that we so often take for granted. That's why I was eager to lend a hand at Sunny Acres and spend some time with the residents there.

When I arrived on Saturday morning, I have to admit I was a bit nervous. I didn't really know what to expect or how to interact with the elderly residents. Would they be grouchy and irritable? Would they have trouble hearing me or understanding what I was saying? My worries were quickly put to rest as I was given a warm welcome by the caring staff who went over the basic protocols and guidelines for volunteers.

My first job was to assist in the dining hall during breakfast time. This involved passing out trays of food, making sure the residents had everything they needed like napkins and utensils, and lending an arm to those who needed help getting situated at their table. Despite my initial awkwardness, I was met with so many friendly smiles and words of gratitude. Nancy, an

87-year-old woman with the most endearing Southern drawl, said "Well aren't you just the sweetest little thing!" after I helped cut up her pancakes for her. Interactions like that immediately put me at ease.

After breakfast, I spent a couple hours doing activities and socializing with the residents. We played games like bingo, put together jigsaw puzzles, and just chatted about life. I was blown away by the incredible stories I heard from men and women who have lived such full and accomplished lives. Francis regaled me

with tales of his service during World War II, while Charlotte spoke so eloquently about her passion for gardening and the beautiful flowers she has grown over the years.

Despite their age and fragility, the spirit and zest for life of these seniors was truly an inspiration. Here they were, some pushing 90 or 100 years old, and they were living each day with such appreciation and joy. They didn't dwell on the aches, pains, and hassles that undoubtedly come with advanced age, but instead chose to embrace the positives and remain endlessly optimistic. If only we could all hold onto that perspective throughout our lives!

One of the most fulfilling parts of the day was during the afternoon when I spent time providing one-on-one companionship to residents who were mostly confined to their rooms. I visited with Edna, who sadly doesn't have any family members left to come see her. She was absolutely delighted to have me sit by her bedside as she watched her "stories" (soap operas) and cleared up my confusion over who was cheating on who and with whom.

Then there was Ralph, a retired English professor who still maintains a brilliant mind despite his body's deterioration. Ralph and I engaged in a lively debate over British literature, with him
