A Day to Honor Our Police Heroes

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. Today I want to talk about a very special day that's coming up soon - International Police Day on March 14th. This is a day where we get to celebrate and honor the brave men and women who keep our communities safe as police officers.

I think it's really important that we take time to appreciate our police. They have such an important job protecting us and making sure rules are followed. Whenever there is an emergency, they are the first ones to arrive on the scene ready to help. Police officers have to be prepared for anything!

My neighbor Mr. Johnson is actually a police officer. I've known him my whole life and he's a really nice man. Sometimes when I see him out working, I'll wave and he always waves back with a big smile. Once, I asked him what he likes most about being a police officer. He said it's getting to help people and make a positive difference in the community. He said the best part of his job is knowing that he played a role in keeping families safe. I think that's really cool!

Police have to go through a lot of intense training to prepare for their jobs. They learn all about enforcing laws, proper procedures for making arrests, self-defense, and so much more. Can you imagine having to take courses on operating firearms and driving really fast? That must be pretty nerve-wracking but also exciting!

My uncle is actually a police instructor down at the academy. Last summer, he let me try on one of the bulletproof vests that officers wear. It was so heavy! He said police have to wear those vests any time they are out on patrol or responding to a call where there could be danger. They have to be ready to protect themselves at all times when protecting us. My uncle tells me police officers are true heroes.

There are so many different jobs that police can have too. Some patrol the streets in cars, others walk a "beat" on foot in neighborhoods. There are motorcycle police who can easily weave through traffic. We also have police officers who go into schools and talk to kids about important things like stranger danger and bullying. They help keep us safe too!

Another hugely important job is being a detective and investigating crimes. Detectives have to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and follow leads to find out exactly what

happened. It's like putting together a big puzzle! I think it would be really cool to examine fingerprints and footprints looking for clues. Maybe I'll be a detective when I grow up.

My friend's dad actually works on the police department's K-9 unit. That means he gets to have a partner who is a highly trained police dog. How awesome is that?! Those dogs are incredibly smart and capable. They can track down suspects, find illegal substances, and even search for missing people. Having a police dog must be like having a best friend at work every single day. I'm a little jealous of that!

Police certainly have a demanding job that can be dangerous at times. However, they are prepared through their training and they look out for one another. Did you know police partners have a bond kind of like brothers or sisters? They always make sure to have each other's backs when out on the streets. That's what makes them so brave - knowing their partner will do everything possible to keep them safe too.

It's amazing to me how police juggle so many different responsibilities yet stay so focused. They have to be ready to spring into action at any moment if an emergency or crime happens. Yet they still take time to protect schools, direct traffic,
