night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with t
he set that involved static (静
电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched int o a commercial(广
告), a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. S ometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working a ltogether .My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set i s working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发
芽) earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer b ut it’s not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce bud s, which signals the arrival of the spring season.
Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center a s the unwanted consequence(结
果) of outdoor lighting such as street lights. Excessive (过多的) man-
made light at night results in disturbed natural cycles, and als o prevents the observation of stars and planets at night. But it s effect on the environment goes beyond that.
By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees th at are more exposed to artificial lighting at night bud up to 7.5 days earlier than those at the natural nighttime setting. And th ey found out that light had a more significant effect than temp erature when the buds came out. The early budding may caus e problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds w hich then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard Ffrench-Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of the ecosystem. “At the moment, caterpillars (毛毛虫) are timed to hatch to make the most of the opportunities to feed on freshly budded leaves, and birds hatch in time to fee d on the young caterpillar,” he said.
Migratory (迁徙
的) birds are also negatively affected by light pollution. The gl are might confuse them and make them lose their flying sens e. The phenomenon might explain why some birds accidentall y knock into buildings.
Such results stress the need to pursue studies that aim to m easure the effect of light pollution. If the issue were left to cont inue, it is estimated that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.
28. What will happen if there is too much man-made light?
A. People’s eyesight will be damaged.
B. The ecosystem will likely lose its balance.
C. No stars or planets may be observed at night.
D. Animals’ living habits may change suddenly.
29. How does the early budding affect insects or plants?
A. It will cause the rising number of insects.
B. It could lead to trees growing fewer leaves.
C. It may result in some insects going hungry.
D. It might push insects to hatch more slowly.
30. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph ?
A. The effect of light pollution is destructive.
B. The spring of 2100 will become much longer.
C. Light pollution should be taken seriously.
D. A further study on light pollution is scheduled.
31. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Why spring comes earlier in some cities.
B. Why light pollution needs to be studied.
C. How trees’ early budding takes place.
D. How much light is “too much”
D
Dormitory management officials in universities say that lately t hey are noticing something different: students seem to lack th e will and skill to address their ordinary conflicts(矛
盾). “We have students who are mad at each other and they t ext each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many o f our roommate conflicts are because kids don’t know how to negotiate(妥协).”
And as many psychologists will tell you, bottled emotions le ad to silent unhappiness that can boil over into frustration and anger. “At Florida University, emotional outbreaks occur abou t once a week,” the dormitory director says. “It used to be: Let’s sit down and talk about it,” he says. “Recently, roommate co nflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is most impressive among freshmen; dormitory officials say some students even never seem to catch on till gr
aduation, and they worry about how such students will deal wi th conflicts after college.
Administrators suppose that relying on cell phones and the Int ernet may have made it easier for young people to avoid unco mfortable meetings. Why express anger in person when you c an do it in a text? Facebook makes the situation worse as co mplaints go public. “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying, s ays Dana Pysz, an assistant director in the housing office at C alifornia University. “It’s a different way to express their conflic ts to each other.” In recent group discussions at North Carolin a State University, students said they would not even accuse t he noisy neighbors on their floor face to face.
Admi
nistrators also point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Would these par ents continue to take care of everything on campus?
32. What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. To greet someone with a title or name.
B. To start trying t o solve a problem.
C. To put an address on an envelope.
D. To make a form
al speech.
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Students handled it directly when they were in conflict.
B. Parents are the main factor to make their children lose the skills.
C. Cellphones are to blame in the students conflicts in their do rmitories.
D. Unhappy and cornered emotions resulted in quarrels betw een students once a week.
34. What do we learn from the group discussions at North Car olina State University?
A. Students are always angry with each other.
B. Students have to bear noises from neighbors.
C. Students may be not good at negotiating in person.
D. Students are brought up self-centered.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passag e?
A. Students’ Unhappy Life in University
B. Parents’ Attention in Children’s Life
C. Students’ Failure to Deal with Conflicts
D. Teachers’ Concerns about Students

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a y ear ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model, I realized this a d ay later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-
five dollars less than I h
ad paid, The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stat ions signed off for the night, Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-
night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静
电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial(广
告), a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear duri ng a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. S ometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working alt ogether .My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep e xpecting more trouble.。
