13. Artist Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell clearly remembers the day in high school when the teacher asked her to write about her family history. She saw that it was impossible to answer the questions “Who am I?” and “Where did I come from?”.
Nzinga Terrell told her memories. “The white kids were able to get up and talk about hundreds of years of their background. And there was me and one other black kid in the class who could go back to a plantation(种植园) in Virginia and that’s it.” She talked about her family history. “My people were brought here on the bottom of a ship. And they were sold and they were renamed.”
Today, she and her husband, artist James Terrell explore their family history in their work. Their new exhibit of paintings is called Born at the Bottom of the Ship. The show recently opened at the Center for the Arts in Manassas, Virginia.
Over the generations, Africans have become African Americans with a new culture, and Nzinga Terrell includes different parts of that story in her art. There are things that look like African cloth and design and things that make you think of American culture and clothing.
James Terrell’s style is more abstract. His painting Mami Wata shows a woman rising from the ocean. Terrell explains the painting, “ Mami Wata is a goddess of the sea. There’s no light going through; there’s not a lot of color being seen, as opposed to the other ones. So, it’s just showing the time of the slaves being brought to America. ”
But the artist says he also likes to play with color. Growing up, James Terrell attended a church with colored glass in many windows. Because of that experience, he learned how light goes through the windows. He makes lines in his painting that look like the lines between pieces of colored glass in the church windows.

作者通过一段人工智能聊天机器人创作的文章段落介绍了 ChatGPT 的概念以及功能,进而阐述了 ChatGPT 对人类职业方面的影响。
14. For decades, scientists and engineers have been working to develop computer programs that can understand and gen crate natural language. This has been a challenging task, but recent advances in machine learning have allowed us to create powerful language models.
The above paragraph was not written by a human. It was generated by a chatbot called ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence technology designed to mimic human conversation and language while drawing upon a vast wealth of knowledge to answer questions and solve problems. What ChatGPT offers seems more capable―and is potentially even more of a threat to jobs―than existing AI chatbot technology.
AI chatbots have been a routine feature of British life for a few years already. Logging onto many companies’ websites today triggers a popup window saying “Hi, I can answer your questions!” Telephoning restaurant chain Cafe Rouge, for example, puts you through to an audio chatbot that can recognize common questions and plays pre-recorded responses.
While ChatGPT is not infallible, Oxford’s Wooldridge compares its output to well-written undergraduate work. For example, when asked “what is artificial general intelligence” the chatbot responds, “It refers to a type of artificial intelligence that is capable of understanding or learning any intellectual task that a human being can, In other words, AGI is a type of A I that is able to perform any cognitive function that a human being can, rather than being limited to a specific set of tasks.” This level of output poses a threat to those at the lower end of the employment market. According to the Office for National Statistics(ONS), around 1.5 million jobs nationwide can be automated away, with those at greatest risk including restaurant waiters,
Those least likely to sec machines taking over their jobs include legal professionals, doctors and university lecturers. Such occupations are classed as highly skilled. The ONS says, “There is not so much that robots are taking over, but that routine and repetitive tasks which can be carried out more quickly and efficiently by an algorithm written by a human, or a machine designed for one specific function.”
The chairman of Parliament’s Business Committee, Darren Jones, hails Chat GPT as the “start of a new trend” in sophisticated AI tech. He says,“It will become common practice to use tools like this at work with time.”
1. What is the function of Chat GPT?
A.To help humans order food from restaurants.
B.To answer questions and solve problems for humans.
C.To automate away all human jobs sooner or later.
D.To accompany human beings by chatting with them.
2. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.ChatGPT’s output can be compared with undergraduate work.
B.ChatGPT could threaten lower-end jobs potentially.
C.It explains what artificial general intelligence is.
D.It illustrates that Chat GPT is limited to a specific set of tasks.
3. According to this passage, which of the following careers are most likely to be replaced by ChatGPT?
A.Doctors.B.Lawyers.
C.Musicians.D.Warehouse Keepers.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.ChatGPT, a Powerful Chatbot Posing Threats to Lower-End Jobs
B.AGI, a Unique Type of AI Performing Cognitive Function
C.AGI, an Outdated AI Technology Taking Over All Jobs
D.ChatGPT, a Routine Feature of Our Daily Life for Years

15. Back-to-back typhoons that attacked reefs (礁) and turned corals upside down hit in 2014 and 2015 in Australia sea, which ruined the coral ecosystem.
Feeling “absolutely shocked,” Stephen Simpson, a biologist at the University of Bristol, decided to channel his sorrow into action. In 2017, he piled up coral remains to build dozens of new small reefs. He placed speakers nearby to play recordings made when the reefs were healthy. “As I wish, twice as many young fish settled on the reefs near these speakers”, he says.
In a new paper, Brittany Williams, a graduate student at the University of Adelaide, reviewed projects that used sound to help restore marine (海洋的) ecosystems. “We wanted to prove that sound has great potential”, she says. That potential arises from the fact that a healthy ocean is noisy: fish
whistle, dolphins scream, and spiny lobsters play their feeler like violins. Like the noise of a big city, the familiar sound of a healthy habitat attracts young creatures that are seeking a permanent home.
The experiments showed that sound is one of the signals baby fish use to find and settle on a coral reef after spending their first weeks swimming in the open ocean. “We realized that the fish might be hearing their way home,” says Williams.
In experiments begun during her postgraduate degree, Williams put oysters (牡蛎) into jars and played some of them a recording from a wasteland where an oyster reef used to be. Other oysters were played nothing, while a third group heard the sound of a restored reef. The oysters that heard the restored reef were about twice as likely as the others to settle and attach themselves at the bottom of the jar.
1. What would Simpson want to achieve when taking action on the reefs?
A.Playing recordings for fishes.B.Making the sea peaceful again.
C.Creating larger and newer reefs.D.Rebuilding the reef community.
2. What is a healthy marine ecosystem like in Williams’s opinion?
A.Sea animals hear their way home.B.Reefs are strong and large enough.
C.The ocean is noisy with various sounds.D.Sea animals have their permanent habitat
3. What may be vital for ensuring the future of the ocean according to the research?
A.Sound.B.Reefs.C.Climate.D.Humans.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To urge people to protect sea life right away.
B.To show the magic use of sea animals’ sound.
C.To introduce a way to restore marine ecosystem.
D.To remove the worries of ecosystem getting worse.

文章主要介绍了休斯敦大学的一项研究,发现有些药物在肠道中有一个代谢过程。
16. A team of University of Houston researchers is reporting a newly recognized process of drug metabolism(代谢) in the intestines(肠)—followed by recycling through the liver(肝脏)—that could have important meanings for developing treatments for intestinal diseases and for taking multiple drugs at the same time.
“The intestines play an important role in metabolizing and recycling certain plant compounds and drugs,” reports Ming Hu, a professor in University of Houston.
The new information could help chemists develop better drugs and doctors fine-tune medication dosing, especially when a patient takes multiple drugs at the same time.
Scientists have long recognized that bile(胆汁) acid is produced in the liver and released into the intestines and is then recycled back through the liver for reuse as the bile, Some drugs that are metabolized in the liver also go through this process.
“The liver has long been considered the most important organ for drug metabolism,” said Hu. “But we’ve shown that the intestines also play a major role in drug metabolism.”
In the experiments, the team administered 16 different types of drugs directly to the liver or intestines and then tracked what happened to the treatments. They found that some drugs and plant compounds were metabolized in the intestines and the metabolites were then transported to the liver before being cycled back into the intestines.
“In this process, the liver acts only as a recycling organ, which is rare, since the liver is known to be the metabolic ‘superstar’ organ in humans,”said Hu. “This may explain why some drugs or plant compounds have larger effects on the intestines than anticipated the body. We hope our findings will be useful for medicinal chemists to design new drugs tailored to treat intestinal diseases.”
1. What is the new discovery of University of Houston researchers?
A.A new cure for intestinal diseases.
B.The way the liver recycles medicines.
C.A newly recognized effect of taking multiple drugs.
D.The phenomenon of drug metabolism in the intestines.
2. What does the underlined word “administered” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A.Produced.B.Studied.C.Gave.D.Introduced.
3. What’s the role of the liver in the newly discovered process?
A.A recycling organ.B.A metabolic organ.
C.A transporting organ.D.A drug tracking organ.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Where Are Drugs Metabolized?
B.How Are New Drugs Designed?
C.What’s the Metabolic Superstar?
D.Why Are Intestinal Diseases Hard to Cure?

文章主要针对如何让生活过的有意义给出一些有效的建议。
17. There’s no good reason not to have a meaningful life 1 But through careful thinking and self-reflection, we can take steps to change
that.
One thing that can help you find meaning in your life is structured, systematic reflection. 2 Then follow up on that by reflecting on what you’d like to add to your life and what you could get rid of to make it more meaningful. If this proves tricky, try taking a look at the lives of people you respect and thinking about what makes you think their lives are meaningful.
3 Imagine yourself, a few decades from now, finding out that you only have a few months or even only a few days to live. What are you
happy to have done and sad not to have done? Reminding yourself that life has a limit will help you focus on what truly matters.
What’s more, if you take a closer look, you might realize that your life is already full of meaning. All too often we don’t recognize what’s important until we are likely to lose it. But there’s no need to wait for adversity to help you appreciate the great things in your life. 4 Finally, you can make small changes and create new habits that will help you appreciate the value in your life. 5 This can help you cultivate a deeper sense of gratitude and find joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life.
A.Firstly, try to be more aware of your preference.
