The Color of Celebration: Red in Chinese Culture
Red is my favorite color! It's so vibrant, lively, and festive. But in Chinese culture, red means much more than just a pretty shade. Red symbolizes luck, joy, and prosperity. It's a very special color that plays a huge role in many Chinese traditions and celebrations.
One of the biggest celebrations that features the color red is Chinese New Year. Getting ready for the new year is like preparing for a huge party that lasts for days and days! Weeks before the new year arrives, my parents start cleaning every nook and cranny of our home. They say it's to sweep away any bad luck and make room for the incoming good fortune. Once everything is spic and span, we decorate the house from top to bottom with red! Vibrant red lanterns hang in doorways and from the ceilings. Red paper cutouts with messages of luck and happiness adorn the walls. We even put up red couplets - pairs of poetry lines written on red paper banners - on either side of our front door.
My favorite part is getting new red clothes and receiving crisp, unused red envelopes filled with money! These little red
packets are called hong bao or "red envelopes." Giving out hong bao is one of the most iconic traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations. Parents, grandparents, relatives, and even close family friends hand them out to kids like me. The red color symbolizes prosperity and luck for the new year. Getting a crisp red envelope always fills me with excitement and gratitude! I can't wait to see how much cash is tucked inside to spend on treats and toys.
Another big event where red takes center stage is Chinese weddings. When a couple gets married, the bride typically wears a stunning red wedding dress called a qipao. Her phoenix crown, shoes, veil, and makeup all incorporate splashes of auspicious red. Red is seen as a sign of great luck, fertility, and happiness for the newlyweds. At the wedding banquet, red decor like lanterns, tablecloths, and floral arrangements turn the venue into a vibrant vision of joy and celebration. Guests hand out hong bao once more, giving red envelopes filled with money to the bride and groom as wedding gifts. The whole day is just brimming with bright crimson luck and well-wishes.
Red lanterns are everywhere during Chinese festivals! They bob above streets, dangle from storefronts, and brighten up parks and temples across China and in Chinatowns around the
world. Lanterns are so iconic and have been used for over 2,000 years. The red paper lanterns were originally carried to scare off evil spirits. They symbolized the brilliant light of wisdom, driving away darkness and ignorance. During my favorite festival, the Lantern Festival, my family and I join the local parade carrying colorful paper lanterns of all shapes and sizes - animals, flowers, characters from myths and legends. Some lanterns are enormous and need teams of people helping to maneuver them down the street! The sea of bobbing red lanterns glowing in the night is magical.
Even the story of the origins of the hong bao tradition features a legendary monster named Nian. This fierce beast was said to attack villages every new year, frightening away the villagers. One year, an old woman encountered Nian and discovered that it was deathly afraid of the brilliant red colors she wore and the loud crashing sounds she carried with her. From that day on, people started decorating their homes with red paper, red lanterns, and firecrackers to scare off Nian and prevent attacks. They also began giving out gifts of money wrapped in red paper packets. Hong bao became a way to spread luck, fortune, and safety through the symbolism of the wealthy red color.
I'm so proud that vibrant shades of red are a fundamental part of Chinese culture and celebrations. Sure, red is an
eye-catching hue that looks festive and energetic. But it has a much deeper meaning for my people. We paint the town red for Chinese New Year, weddings, festivals, and so many other joyous occasions because red represents vitality, fertility, and prosperity. Whenever I see bright red lanterns, red envelopes, or red decorations, my heart feels full of happiness and excited anticipation. Red is the color of life, luck, and jubilation. And I can't wait to continue learning about and experiencing the incredible traditions surrounding the luckiest color there is!。
