Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was feasted by Russian media on Sunday for saving a television crew from an attack by a Siberian tiger in the wilds of the Far East.
Putin apparently saved the crew while on a trip to a national park to see how researchers monitor the tigers in the wild.
Just as Putin was arriving with a group of wildlife specialists to see a trapped Amur tiger, it escaped and ran towards a nearby camera crew, the country’s main television station said. Putin quickly shot the beast and calmed it with a tranquilizer gun.
“Vladimir putin not only managed to see the giant predator up close but also saved our television crew too,”a presenter on Russia television said at the start of the main evening news. The 55-year-old former KGB spy, who cultivated a hero image during his eight years as the Kremlin chief, was shown striding through the woods in his desert boots before grappling with the tiger.
He helped measure the Amur tiger’s teeth before placing a satellite transmitter around the neck of the beast, which can weigh up to 450 kg and measure around three meters from nose to the tip of the tail.
Fewer than 400 Amur tigers—also known as Siberian, Ussuri or Manchurian tigers—are believed to survive in the wild, most of them in Russia and some in China.
Putin thanked Western researchers for being involved in programs to save the Amur tigers. “First of all, we must thank our colleagues, American and European colleagues for being involved with this during a difficult time for Russia when no one was paying any attention to this,”Putin said.
Putin last year made it into glossy magazines across the world by wearing combat trousers and baring(裸露) his muscle for photographers while on a fishing trip in the Yenisei river.

For Senior 3 students, choosing which college to attend can be the most exciting and thrilling time in their entire school lives. This is also true for an American girl named Melanie in the film, College Road Trip, which was released in the US on March 7.
Melanie’s dad, James Porter, is the chief of police for a Chicago suburb(市郊). Incredibly security obsessed(困扰), he wants Melanie to attend nearby Northwestern University, where she’s already been accepted. But Melanie, 17, really wants to go to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., where she’s been wait-listed.
When she gets an unexpected interview, she decides to take a road trip with a few close female friends. Melanie believes it is her first step toward adulthood.
But despite the fact that this trip is “girls only”, James isn’t comfortable with the prospect of his little princess exploring the world without him. He wants to protect her.
James joins the girls and hopes he can convince her to go to Northwestern. While Melanie’s father only has the best of intentions, his presence leads to an endless series of comic encounters.
After following their faulty GPS device deep into the backwoods, James and Melanie discover her little brother and his pet pig have been hiding in the spare tire compartment(隔间). What should be a simple tire change results in the expensive car rolling down a mountain, forcing them to hike to a nearby hotel. There the pig ruins an outdoor wedding
reception after eating an entire bag of coffee beans.
All these disasters add spice to their trip while along the way a father and a daughter finally get the chance to really talk to each other.
The film explores the parent-child relationship in a comic way. The discrepancy(不同) between how close James thinks he is to Melanie and how little he actually knows of her plans makes us laugh first and then think.
All parents, whether they have college students or not, can relate to the bittersweet realization that their kids are growing up. Like what Melanie and James have done in the film, we all can find the delicate balance between staying connected and letting go.
(C)64. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. It’s unclear whether Melanie could be accepted by Northwestern University.

C.
C. Melanie father prefers her to stay not too far away from him.

B. a hotel was destroyed by Melanie’s brother and his pet pig
C. the girls had to give up their trip because of the incidents on the way
D. Melanie and her father got to understand each other better after so many encounters
[解析] 我们可以在文章倒数第三段a father and a daughter finally get the chance to really talk to each other找到信息,经过一些冲突后,Melanie和她的爸爸经过了交谈,他们彼此有了更好的理解。

choice.

Australian scientists say an organic compound(复合物) used by Indian women to paint dots or bindi on their foreheads could hold the key to a breakthrough in cancer treatment. Rose Bengal was first used in the early 1900s as a dye for food, textiles and cosmetics. But now it is proving to be a useful weapon in the fight against skin cancer.
Television advertisements constantly warn of the dangers of overexposure to the fierce sun. Among them is the possibility of the disease melanoma(黑瘤), a type of skin cancer. More than 1,200 Australians die every year from the disease.
Initial trials of a solution of Rose Bengal injected into some melanoma cells have had a 75 percent success rate in controlling the disease. Professor John Thompson, the director of the Melanoma Unit at the University of Sydney, says this organic dye could become a powerful cancer-fighting treatment.
“We believe it works by getting into the tumor(肿块) cells and causing them to self-destruct. But the exact mechanism by which it works is not totally clear. It’s not useful for people who have a primary melanoma. The treatment of primary melanoma is surgical excision(切除),”he said. “It’s useful to inject tumors for people who have recurrences; when the primary treatment has failed and when recurrence in the area, or at more distant sites has occurred.”
About 90 percent of Australians who develop melanoma survive thanks to early diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, however, the disease can be fatal.
Convincing younger people in Australia about the dangers of overexposure to the sun is a battle campaigners are
constantly waging.
Veronica Manock, a 21-year-old student, had two major operations to remove a cancerous tumor from her leg.
“I’ve had a lot of friends who just said ‘I thought it was just, you know, I’ll get a mole(痣) cut out and that’s it’, whereas I don’t think people realize how much danger they’re putting themselves into and how easy it is to stop something like this happening to you just from doing little things,”said Marock.
Other researchers in Australia are investigating genetic treatments to skin cancer. There is a pressing need for such research to produce effective treatments. Australians, the majority of whom are fair-skinned(浅肤色的), are four times more likely to develop a melanoma than people in Canada, the United States or Great Britain.
(D)68. The information about Rose Bengal is wrong EXCEPT that .
A. it is no longer used as a dye
B. it is used to cure skin cancer
C. it is a special kind of rose planted in Australia
D. it can be effective in treating skin cancer
[解析] 在第一段和第三段可以看出Rose Bengal只在治疗中起到作用,并不能治愈皮肤癌。
(B)69. The main reason for Australia’s high rate in skin cancer is .
A. the overuse of cosmetics
B. overexposure to the sun
C. the color of their skin
D. the lack of prevention
[解析] 细节题。
从文章第二段可知澳大利亚人容易患皮肤癌的原因是他们晒太阳太多的缘故。
(B)70. From the passage we can learn that .
A. skin cancer is incurable
B. some young people seem to know little about the danger of overexposure to the sun
C. about ninety percent of Australians are likely to develop melanoma
D. all moles should be cut out to prevent skin cancer
[解析] 这是一个细节题,在文章第六段可以找到答案。
(D)71. According to Professor John Thompson, the best way to deal with primary cancer is .
A. injecting tumors
B. taking some medicine
C. getting genetic treatment
D. having surgical excision
[解析] 从第四段中The treatment of primary melanoma is surgical excision.中我们可以看出对于早期的皮肤癌的治疗就是进行外科切除。
(A)72. The passage was intended for .
A. general readers
B. people who like taking sun-bathing
C. doctors and researchers
D. children at school
[解析] 这篇文章并没有单纯从医学角度介绍,而是从日常生活等方面进行讲述。
所以这篇文章是写给一般的读者的。

During the Beijing Paralympics, over 60 disabled people including myself work as volunteers in the Paralympics Village or other venues. We use our professional skills to serve athletes from all over the world and at the same time, show our spirit and positive life attitude to them. We share the same world with all the people, no matter we are disabled or not.”
Among all the visitors, there are also three special guests from quake-hit areas in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The devastating earthquake last May changed their lives completely as it took their legs.
Guo Tingting is a student of the Juyuan Middle School in Dujiangyan county of Sichuan, one of the worst-hit areas in the quake. She was the first girl to stand up again with her prosthesis after the injury. She says she is inspired by the spirit of all the athletes.
“I am happy today to meet so many athletes here. Their spirit inspired me a lot. They are disabled people, just like
me. I admire their persistence to never give up. They are my role models.”
Dressed in pink skirt, the one-legged Ballet girl from the opening ceremony, Li Yue, also came to the Paralympics Village. Upon seeing her, the famous South African swimmer Natalie Du Toit, who competed both in the Beijing Olympics and the Paralympics, gave her best wishes.
“I think it’s just to persevere and just to keep going and all her dreams will come true one day.”
Other foreign athletes also sent their best wishes, like veteran German table tennis player Rainer Schmidt. “It’s maybe the two most important points that they don’t lost the happiness of their life and that they can come back in social life and so on and I wish to all of them that many people are caring for them and then it’ll work.”
