Joy Mangano is now an American inventor. She was divorced and had three kids under age 7 when she was 33, and was barely keeping up payments on her small two-bedroom home by working extra hours as a waitress. “There were times when I would lie in bed and think. I didn't know how I was going to pay that bill,” Mangano says.
But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired, of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There's gotta be a better way.”
How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets.
Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed Mangano was sure it would sell if they'd let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it's a great item.”
So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took a chance on her. “I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.”
Today she's president of Ingenious Designs, a multimillion-dollar company, and one of the stars of HSN, the Home Shopping Network. Talking about the household invention, Mangano says, “It is as natural for me as it is for
a parent to talk about their child.”

Blood donations save lives. But blood can only be stored under refrigeration (冷藏) for up to six weeks. After that, it’s no longer usable for transfusions(输血).
“Because of that limitation, people have to continually donate blood to meet the needs. But also, in places where refrigeration may not be available, that can also bea challenge. It’s difficult to have blood available when needed.”UniversityofLouisvillebioengineer Jonathan Kopechek says. He also says disruptions to regular blood donations due to COVID-19 have put stress on the blood supply, and COVID-19 strengthens the need for more reliable long-term storage methods.
But it’s pretty rare because of all the challenges and complexities with that process. Instead Kopechek’s team has developed a method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to an unusual preservative(防腐剂): a sugar called trehalose, which is a common ingredient(成分) in donuts(甜甜圈)to help make them look fresh even when they might be months old, and people wouldn’t know the difference.
At that point, the blood could be dried and made into a powder(粉末). And then we can rehydrate(再水化) the blood and have it return back to normal. The team is still trying to improve yields but thinks the dried blood could be stored at room temperature for years. Kopechek says the technique could be ready for clinical trials in three to five years. If successful, itcould be used to create stores of dried blood in case of future pandemics or natural disasters, and for first aid work, military operations or even missions to Mars. Maybe first aid kits on the Red Planet will include dried red blood cells.
8. Why we need a more reliable method to preserve blood?
A. Refrigeration can’t be afforded.
B. The cost to store blood is very high.
C. People can’t donate their blood for COVID-19.
D. Blood can only be stored under refrigeration for a short time.
9. What makes the food or blood look fresh?
A. Trehalose.
B. Donuts.
C. Powder.
D. The new technique.
10. What can we know about the technique?
A. It is successful now.
B. It has been put into use.
C. It will be widely used.
D. It has been researched for 3 to 4 years.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to store blood.
B. Shortage of refrigeration .
C. A new technique of storing blood.
D. A new technique used in many fields.
D
The market for tourism in remote areas is booming as never before. Countries all across the world are actively promoting their wilderness regions-such as mountains, Arctic lands, deserts, small islands and wetlands— to high-spending tourists. The attraction of these areas is obvious: by definition, wilderness tourism requires little or no initial investment. But that does not mean that there is no cost.
Once a location is established as a main tourist destination, the effects on the local community are profound. Hill-farmers can make more money from foreign travellers than working in their fields. It is not surprising that many o£ them give up their farm-work. In some hill-regions, this has led to a serious decline in farm output and a change in the local diet, because there is lacking labour to maintain terraces and irrigation systems. The result has been that many people in these regions have turned to outside supplies of rice and other foods.
InArcticand desert societies, year-round survival has traditionally depended on hunting animals and fish and collecting fruit over a ly short season. However, as some inhabitants become involved in tourism, they no longer have time to collect wild food; this has led to increasing dependence on bought food and stores. What should they do if these new sources of income dry up?
The physical impact of visitors is another serious problem associated with the growth in adventure tourism. Much attention has focused on erosion along major roads, but perhaps more important are the forest destruction and impacts on water supplies arising from the need to provide tourists with cooked food and hot showers. In both mountains and deserts, slow-growing trees are often the main sources of fuel and water supplies may be limited through heavy use.
12. Why are some countries promoting the wilderness regions to tourists?
A. The wildness regions are accessible to tourists.
B. The landscapes there are beautiful and unique.
C. Developing tourism there doesn't need much investment.
D. Lots of high-spending tourists prefer such remote regions.
13. What is the effect of tourism on the local community?
A. Many hill farmers have turned to outside supplies of foods.
B. There is enough labour to maintain terraces and irrigation systems.
C. Farm output there has increased and local diet has changed.
D. The local people's new sources of income will dry up soon.
14. Which might be the best title of the passage?
A. The future of wilderness tourism.
B. The impacts of wilderness tourism.
C. The destruction of wilderness tourism.
D. The disadvantages of wilderness tourism.
15. If there is one more paragraph following the last paragraph, what will it talk about?
A. The effects on local people.
B. The solutions tothese problems.
C. The choices of adventure tourists.
D. The reasons for visiting remote areas.

Dear Tom,
I’d like to share my travel experience with you. During this summer holiday, my parents and me went on a trip to the capital city of Tibet, Lhasa, that is also the political, economic and cultural centre of the region.
We first visit the Potala Palace originally built in the 7thcentury. But then, we appreciated a rich collection of cultural treasures in Tibet Museum where we learned some useful historical knowledges about Tibet. During those days, we were all surprising by the natural scenery there, which made us to feel peaceful and quiet. I strong suggest that you travel to Tibet with me next time and I’m sure you will have wonderful time.
Looking forward to meet you soon.
Yours,
