extends on the fields and the grass is wet

make out shapes:small birds(47)(sing)
their hearts out from rooftops and branches. But
the dawn chorus is becoming more and more
silent because the numbers of so many songbirds have been(48)(drastic)reduced.There are many reasons for this. One is modern farming methods:fields are sprayed, fertilized and ploughed up by machines for (49)maxi output.Hedgerows(灌木丛),(50)wildlife flourishes, were destroyed because,at the time,no one really knew the effects of pulling them down. The result is that there is nowhere for the birds to nest.So what are we going to do for it?Government officials say there is going to be(51)(increase)funding in this area.We still expect of the countryside as(52)(be)full of natural beauty,of footpaths, woods and fields. But (53)the proper protection, these will gradually disappear.Naturally,we all want jobs, enough to eat,and somewhere to live.(54),we also want to hear the nightingale sing and the swallows coming home for spring. So unless we take action now,we will be putting our countryside at(55)dang.

So you thought the hamburger was the world’s most popular fast food? After all,McDonald’s Golden Arches span the globe. But no,there is another truly universal fast food, the ultimate fast food. It’s easy to make, easy to serve, much more varied than the hamburger, can be eaten
8--
with the hands, and it’s delivered to your front door or served in fancy restaurants. It’s been one of America’s favourite foods for over50years.It is,of course, the pizza.
The pizza gradually evolved over the years,
but one thing’s for certain—it’s been around for
a very long time. The idea of using pieces of
flat, round bread as plates came from the
Greeks.They called them“plakuntos”and ate
them with various simple toppings such as oil,
garlic,onions,and herbs.The Romans enjoyed
eating something similar and called it“picea”.
By about1000A.D.in the city of Naples,“picea”had become“pizza”and people were experimenting with more toppings:cheese, ham, anchovies(凤尾鱼),and finally the tomato, brought to Italy from Mexico and Peru in the sixteen century.Naples became the pizza capital of the world.In1889,King Umberto I and Queen Margherita heard about pizza and asked to try it. They invited pizza maker,Raffaele Esposito,to make it for them.He decided to make the pizza like the Italian flag,so he used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese, and green basil leaves. The Queen loved it and the new pizza was named“pizza Margherita”in her honour. Pizza migrated to America with the Italians at the end of the nineteenth century. The first pizzeria in the United States was opened in1905at531/2Spring Street,New York City. But the popularity of pizza really exploded when American soldiers returned from Italy after World War II.
Answer the following questions according to the passage.
66.What is the world’s most popular fast food?
67.What are the similarities and differences between the hamburger and the pizza?
68.Who thought of the idea of using pieces of flat, round bread as plates?
69.Why are Mexico and Peru important in the development of pizza?
70.When did pizza become really popular in the United States?
Section D(10marks)
Questions71—75are based on the following passage.
Robots are useful in exploring space because they can work in the conditions which exist in space.Such robots usually look like boxes with wheels.Though these robots are useful, however, they are extremely expensive—they break easily and they cannot do many tasks.Because of these problems, scientists have been working on a new and unusual kind of robot. These new robots will look and move like snakes,so they have been given the name“snakebots”. The way a snake is shaped allows it to do special things, such as getting into very small spaces, like cracks in rocks.Snakes can also push themselves underground, and climb up
9--
different kinds of objects, like rocks and trees.Such abilities account for the usefulness of robots designed like snakes, because they will be able to do these things, too.Such robots would be much more effective than regular robots with wheels.Wheeled robots easily get stuck and fall over, but snakebots would not have these problems. They could go almost anywhere and so would be useful for exploring the different environments of other planets.Since they can carry tools, snakebots would be able to work in space,as well. They could, for example, help repair the International Space Station.
How do you make a robot shaped like a snake?Asnakebot is put together like a chain, made of about thirty parts,or modules. Each module is basically the same—they all contain a computer and wheel to aid movement. The computer in the“head”of the snake makes the module work together. If one module fails, another can easily take its place.Snakebot modules can also carry different kinds of tools,as well as cameras.Since each module is actually a robot in itself,it can work apart from the rest if necessary.
The snakebot design is
much simpler than that of
much common robots.Thus,
snakebots will be much less
expensive to build.One of the
robots sent to Mars cost over a
hundred million dollars to build. However, snakebots cost as little as a few hundred dollars to make and could therefore save enormous amounts of money on future space missions. With their versatility and affordability(可购性),snakebots will be the way of the future.
Read the passage carefully and then complete each blank in the summary in a maximum of three words from the passage.
