第一节阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A , B, C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Forty years ago, psychologist Paul Ekman of the University of California, San Francisco, showed photographs of Americans expressing various emotions to the isolated Fore people in New Guinea. Though most of the Fore had never been exposed to Western faces, they readily recognized expressions of anger, happiness, sadness, disgust, and fear and surprise (which are difficult to differentiate). When Ekman conducted the experiment in reverse, showing Fore faces to
Westerners, the emotions were again unmistakable. Ekman's now classic study gave powerful support to the notion that the facial expressions of basic emotions are universal, an idea first put forth by Charles Darwin.
According to Ekman, these six emotions (plus contempt) are themselves universal, evolved to prepare us to deal quickly with circumstances we believe will affect our welfare. Some emotional triggers are universal as well. A sudden invasion of your field of vision triggers fear, for instance. But most emotional triggers are learned. The smell of newly mowed hay will conjure up different emotions in someone who spent idyllic childhood summers in the country and someone who was forced to work long hours on a farm. Once such an emotional association is made, it is difficult, if not impossible, to unmake it.
"Emotion is the least plastic part of the brain," says Ekman. But we can learn to manage our emotions better. For instance, the shorter the time between the onset of an emotion and when we become consciously aware of it—what Ekman calls the refractory period—the more likely we are to double-check to see if the emotion is appropriate to the situation. One way to shorten the refractory period is to be aware of what triggers our various emotions.
41. From the first paragraph, we can infer that ( )
A.Fore people know Americans well so they can recognize their emotions easily.

In late March, Southwest University became the first school in China to open a 24-hour hotline providing suicide-prevention counseling.
College suicide is a hear-breaking and controversial topic. Chinese college students have long been the focus of public attention: their youth, education and, most importantly, bright futures make them the envy of society.
However, in recent years, we’ve read more reports of student suicides. Perhaps that’s simply because of society’s obsession with youth. But it could also signify the increasing troubled mental state of young people.
Many studies have sought to find out the causes of student suicides. Not surprisingly, the top factors usually include psychological and physical sickness, emotional trouble and peer pressure. Despair about their futures is also quickly becoming a leading factor: Many students say they feel hopeless and confused about the direction of their careers in a crowded job market.
Thankfully, more and more universities and colleges are providing counseling services to address students’mental and psychological problems. These at least offer some comfort to students facing tough job prospects and personal difficulties.
From appointing in-house student counselors to setting up hotlines and recruiting students to help their troubled peers, many universities are making proactive efforts to fight student depression. There is no denying that much remains to be done, but such efforts are already working, helping students and saving lives.
However, the most important front in this battle lies with the students themselves. Whatever efforts school officials make, it is up to students to realize their problems and ask help. Unfortunately, many students considering suicide refuse to seek help. By shutting themselves away, they can easily fall into vicious cycles, becoming ever more vulnerable to personal difficulties and the pressures of the outside world.
While establishing better on-campus psychological education and outreach programs are a step forward, students themselves must actively reach out for help. These dangers are a reality for every student, not only those who feel confused and depressed.
46. Why are there so many students that commit suicide?
A. Because of psychological and physical sickness.
B. Feel hopeless and confused about their future.
C. Emotional trouble.
D. All of the above.
47. Which of the following is WRONG according to the article?
A. No university had a whole day hotline providing suicide-prevention counseling before March.
B. Many people envy the college students their bright futures.
C. Only the students who feel confused and depressed have psychological problems and need psychological education.
D. The problems of student suicides indicate the increasing troubled mental state of young people.
48. What is the key to avoid student suicides?
A. Parents communicate with their children and understand them.
B. Colleges and universities offer more help to students.
C. Students themselves realize their problems and seek help from others.
D. Friends give more comfort and show more understanding to the problem students.
49. This article is probably a/an ( ).
A. report
B. advertisement
C. commentary
D. argumentation
50. Which of the following can be the best title for the article?
A. Help is at hand for suicidal students.
B. More college students commit suicide.
C. How can students avoid committing suicide?
D. Why college students feel depressed?

Jim Madison was walking through the American Cemetery at Normandy one day in 2001 when his eyes fell on a grave marker that caught him by surprise, “Elizabeth A. Richardson, American Red Cross, Indiana July 25, 1945”.The chance discovery led to his new book-- An American Woman in World War Two, which tells about the war through the eyes of Richardson. Richardson joined the Red Cross in 1944 and worked on a Clubmobile-- a converted bus from which she and other women served coffee and chatted to American soldiers scattered across England and France. More important than the food, they were a reminder of home for lonely and miserable soldiers.
She died at 27 in a crash of a two-seater L-5 Sentinel aircraft. She was one of four women buried at the American Cemetery at Normandy.
Madison said the present understanding of World War Two just focused on the experiences of made soldiers, but women were also important to the war effort and brought their own views to the conflict. “The point I try to make in the book is how close Richardson came to understanding war,” he said. “She saw the effects of it, and she grieved.”
When Madison returned from Normandy in 2001, he managed to contact Richardson’s younger brother, Charles Richardson Jr. It was her family’s keeping of her letters and diaries that made possible the book, which quoted from them extensively.
Madison believes America’s fascination with World War Two will outlive those who fought it and the generations that follow them. Since the late 1980s, he has taught undergraduate courses on the war at Indiana University, and he said students obviously warm up to the subject.
He said he sometimes talked to World War Two soldiers who “have a sense that young people don’t know and they don’t care”. “I tell them it’s the opposite”, he said.
51. How did Jim Madison get the idea of writing a book about Word War Two?
A. His friends suggested it.
B. He got it quite by accident
C. It was requested by Richardson’s brother.
D. It was arranged by his university.

A. provided warmth and encouragement to soldiers
B. were braver than male soldiers
C. didn’t experience much suffering during the war
D. had a good understanding of the cruelty of the war
53. What made Madison’s new book special?
A. That it was based on a real life story and focused on the cruelty of war.
B. That it talked about war from a woman’s point of view.
C. That it quoted a lot from Richardson’s letters and diaries.
D. That it reminded people of those who contributed in World War Two.
54. What is Jim Madison according to the passage?
A. A writer
B. A reporter
C. A historian
D. A professor
55. According to Madison, today’s American youth .

Zoos are places where animals are kept. There are some reasons for keeping animals in zoos.
Firstly, zoos are entertaining and interesting places of children. Most children like to see animals in zoos. Zoos also offer people living in big cities a chance of getting close to nature.
Secondly, it is easier for scientists to research animals’ lives when they are kept in zoos than they are in forests. Scientists can study animals’relationships, their life cycle, or their habits to learn how to bread animals, which can reduce animal extinction.
Furthermore, the risk of extinction of some endangered animals is reduced because they are kept in safety.
However, zoos also cause some problems for animals, such as restrictions on their freedom. They also lose their “wild” character. For example, tigers might lose their hunting skills. Besides, zoos cost a lot of money for land, animals’ food and labors. This may charge expensive entrance fees for people who want to visit zoos.

The advantages of keeping animals in zoos
The passage tells us about the reasons for keeping animals in zoos. On the other hand, keeping animals in zoos also has its own disadvantages just as the original passage has listed.
In my opinion, that animal are kept in zoos is reasonable. On one hand, zoos are interesting places to people of all ages. It is easier for people to go to the zoo to have a close contact with
animals, which is beneficial for human beings to make friends with them. Besides, zoos are good for some endangered species. If animals, especially some rare animals, are kept in the forest, they will be more easily killed by some bad people, which will make rare animals stay in danger of being extinct. However, workers of zoos should look after all animals and give them enough food and freedom so that the animals can live a normal life. In addition, we tourists must obey the rules of zoos and never give animals unhealthy food.

Olly: Well, Liu, it looks like you've got another shot to get yourself a few Olympic tickets. The final batch of domestic-market Olympic tickets is scheduled to go on sale from May 5 to June 9. You'd better jump at this chance.
Liu: Is it going to be another lottery draw? Lately, I've had terrible luck. Last week, I lost my cellphone. Just yesterday I spilled tomato sauce all over my new pants. I doubt I'll win a chance to buy Olympic tickets.
Olly: Fear not, Liu. There's no lottery system this time. It's first come, first served.
Liu: Oh, great! I'll be an early bird on May 5.
Olly: Well, you'd better be a super-early bird. After all, there are plenty of others who are in your same situation. And remember: Buyers are limited to three tickets for two sessions. That means each person can buy up to six tickets.
Liu: But what if I want to buy more tickets?
Olly: Well, that's easy. Once the tickets you book are paid for, you can move to the end of the line and wait your turn to buy some more.

THE earthquake affects the students of the destroyed areas in many ways: losing parents, being scared and feeling lonely. How can we help them? Teens reporter talks with Lin Dan, the program director of the Sunshine in Your Heart Project (心灵阳光工程) at the Red Cross Society of China.
Lin Dan says the children will have feelings of fear, anger and feel they are not safe after the quake. They will find it hard to focus. They will tend to cry and shout and tremble (颤抖). And they might be afraid to be alone.
The teenagers will find it hard to live in a balanced way. If things get worse they might not be able to focus on their studies. They might give up on life.
Lin Dan says we can do something to help the children. The first thing is to build up trust with them. Show your sympathy (同情) and sadness, and be their friend. Then you have to give them a sense of safety. Tell them that there's a solution to every problem. Thirdly, try to satisfy their psychological (心理的) needs. Be a good listener if he or she needs to talk.
The reporter asks the question what should teens do when they see the horrible images on TV and feel scared. Lin Dan gives her suggestion that the teens should talk with an adult and / or share their feelings with someone who might feel similar. If this doesn't help then the teens should see a doctor for professional help.。
