阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A
Once upon a time, there was a master who went to India. In those times, people didn't have the communications or airplanes or many kinds of transportation that we do now. So the master went to India on foot. He had never been to India before; perhaps he came from Persia. And when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit. In India they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive because they can't grow much due to the water situation. So he saw one basket, a big basket of some very red, long fruit. And it was the cheapest in the shop, not expensive at all. So he went up and asked, "How much per kilo?" And the shopkeeper said, "Two rupees." Two rupees in India is nothing; it's like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it: Oh, my God! His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, his eyes were burning, his head was burning and his face became red. As he coughed and choked and gasped for breath, he jumped up and down, saying, "Ah! Ah! Ah!"
But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, "You're crazy, man. Those are chilies! You can't eat so many; they're not good for you! People use them as a condiment, but only a little bit to put into food for taste. You can't just eat them by the handful like that; they're not fruit!" So the stupid master said, "No, I can't stop! I paid money for them, and now I'll eat them. It's my money!"
And you think that master was stupid, right? Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We invest money, time or effort in a relationship, business or job. And even though it's been a long time, bitter experience tells us it won't
work, and we know there's no more hope that things will change in the future——this we definitely know by intuition ——we still continue just because we've invested money, time, effort and love into it .If so, we're kaput in the brain. Just like the man who ate the chilies and suffered so much but couldn't stop because he didn't want to waste the money he'd paid.
So even if you've lost something, you should let it go and move on. That's better than continuing to lose.
56. Why did the master buy the chilies to eat?
A. Because he liked the taste.

This Mother’s Day will be the 8th year I have spent without my own mother. She passed away less than a month before Mother’s Day in the year 2000. She had been ill for almost two years, and I didn’t cry when she died, or at her funeral, but on that first Mother’s Day without her. On that day, I realized that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
She still lives in family memories, in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers, in the values she had instilled in her children, and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli and irises. Each fall she would dig the bulbs out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper. The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted. It seemed like a lot of effort to me, but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before. She put the same hard work into caring for her family, instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play, compassion, and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share anecdotes about your mother’s life at your Mother’s Day party. Too oft en, we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away, fearful that we will unearth sad feelings. It doesn’t have to be that way. Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old.
Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of the grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of. Sharing anecdotes to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity, and may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.
66. On the first Mother’s Day after mum died the author realized_______ .

A. worked hard at the flower garden
B. showed kindness to all her children
C. had a good influence on the author
D. taught the children to plant patiently
68. At the Mother’s Day party people don’t mention their mums who have passed away
only because_______ .
A. they have forgotten their mums completely
B. they are simply afraid of causing sad feelings
C. they don’t love their mums any longer
D. they think their mums have passed away
69. The underlined word “It” ( in Paragraph 4) most likely refers to _____ .
A. Preparing for Mother’s Day party.

Many people think of the brain as a mystery. They don’t know much about intelligence and how it works. When they do think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born smart, average, or dumb--- and stays that way in the whole life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle--- it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.
Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger. A person who can’t lift 20 pounds when he/ she starts ex ercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That’s because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink and you get weaker. That’s why people say “ Use it or lose it !”
But most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. Inside the cortex(皮层) of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells, called neurons. The nerve cells have branches connecting them to other cells in a complicated network. Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems.
When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do---- like speaking a foreign language---- seem to become easy after learning them for a period of time. The result is a stronger, smarter brain.
Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals’ brains. They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more “ perspicacious”----- they were better at solving problems and learning new things.
71. According to the first paragraph, ________ .
A. our brain can remember many more things than we think
B. until now it’s impossible to explain the brain’s mystery
C. many peop le believe one’s intelligence is naturally determined
D. scientists are carrying out many experiments to study intelligence
72. Training muscles is compared to________ .
A. developing the brain
B. doing physical exercise
C. remembering things
D. learning a new language
73. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How scientists find the secrets of the brain.
B. How changes in the muscles affect the brain.
C. The importance of the brain.
D. How the brain works.
74. Wh at does the underlined word “ perspicacious” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. strong
B. smart
C. popular
D. active
75. The following paragraph will most probably talk about ______ .
A. differences between animals’ brains and humans’ brains
B. the right environment to raise animals
C. scientists’ findings about animals’ brains
D. animals’ development throughout history

Text 10
Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.
Have you ever heard of a four—year—old college student? But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.
Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn't stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads newspaper every day, and he can play the violin well. He doesn't have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teachers want to help him in every way.
