Everyone has experienced trying, but failing to master a difficult book that was begun with th e hope of increasing one’s understanding. When that happens, it is 36 to think that it was a mistake to try to read it, but that was not the mistake. The mistake was in 37 too much from the first reading of a(n) 38 book. If you read it in the right way, no book written for the 39 reader, no matter how difficult, need be a cause for despair(令人失望).
What is the right method? The 40 is an important and helpful rule of reading that is either not 41 or often forgotten. That rule is simply this; when reading a difficult book for the first time, read it through without ever 42 to think about the things that you do not understand immediately.
Do not be stopped by what you 43 understand. Read through the difficult 44 , and you soon come to things that you do understand. Read these 45 . You will have a much better chance of understanding all of the book when you read it again, but that 46 you to have read the book through once 47 .
What you understand by reading the book through to the 48 will help you when you try later to read the places that you did not 49 in your first reading. Or if you never re-read the book, under-standing half of it is much better than understanding 50 of it, which will happen 51 you allow yourself to be stopped by the first difficult part of the book.
Most of us were taught to 52 the things that we do not understand. We were told to find the 53 of unfamiliar words, and to try to find an explanation in another 54 for anything that we did not understand in the book that we were reading. But when these things are done before the proper time, they only 55 our reading, instead of helping it.

Dear Mr Price,
I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service. This makes what happened last Saturday even more disappointing.
It was my son’s birthday so we booked a no-smoking table at your restaurant for 7:30p.m. We arrived on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8:00p.m., we were given a table in the smoking section. I asked to move but I was told that there were no other tables. A lot of people were smoking so it was uncomfortable and unhealthy.
Our first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found a dead cockroach(蟑螂) in her vegetables. She was shocked and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress told us it was a piece of garlic. When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she apologized and took the food away.
We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife’s meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. the head waiter told us that you were on holiday. I complained again about the horrible cockroach. He told me Janet had finished work. He
didn’t believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals. I argued with him but was forced to pay.
The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology from your impolite head waiter and a full refund for our meal. It cost $68. Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone.
You can contact me at 742-3254 or through e-mail if you want more information.
Thank you for your attention.
Yours sincerely,
Raymond Yuen

Human feeling are affected by color unconsciously. Manufacturers have discovered by trial and error that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, that blue foods are considered by consumers as tasteless, and that cosmetics(化妆品) should never be packaged in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole discipline of color psychology. Some of our preferences are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore associated with calm; while yellow is a key color in association with energy. For primitive men, activity during the day time meant hunting and attacking, in which he soon saw red, the color of blood and hunting and the fire. So it was natural that green, the complementary color to red, should be associated with passive defense. Experiments have shown that colors also have a direct psychological effect. People when exposed to bright red show an increase in breathing rate, heart beat and blood pressure. Red is exciting. Similar exposure to pure blue has exactly the opposite effect, because it is a calming color. Because red has
an implication of excitement, it was chosen as the signal for danger. Some analysis shows that a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm. So fire engines and ambulances in some advanced countries are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop traffic deed.
60. If people are exposed to red, which of the following statements does NOT happen?
A. They feel afraid.
B. They breathe faster.
C. Their blood pressure rises.
D. Their hearts beat faster.

A. by experimenting with different colors
B. by developing the discipline of color psychology
C. by trying not to make mistakes
D. by accumulating their various experiences

B. Food should never be packaged in brown.
C. Sugar sells badly in green wrappings.
D. Color probably has an effect on us which we are not conscious of.
63. Our preferences for certain colors are ________.
A. dependent on our character
B. linked with the primitive men
C. associated with psychology
D. associated with the time of the day

In the early days of sea travel, seamen on long voyages lived exclusively on salted meat and biscuits. Many of them died of scurvy(坏血病), a disease of the blood which causes swollen gums, livid white spots on the flesh and general exhaustion. On one occasion, in 1535, an English ship arrived in Newfoundland with its crew desperately ill. The men’s lives were saved by Iroquois Indians who gave them vegetable leaves to eat. Gradually it came to be r ealized that scurvy was caused by some lack in the sailors’ diet and captain Cook, on his long voyages of discovery to Australia and New Zealand, established the fact that scurvy could be warded off by the provision of fresh fruit for the sailors.
Nowadays it is understood that a diet which contains nothing harmful may yet result in serious disease if certain important elements are missing. These elements are called “vitamins”. Quite a number of such substances are known and they are given letters to identify them, A,B,C,D, and so on. Different diseases are associated with deficiencies of particular vitamins. Even a slight lack of Vitamin C, for example, the vitamin most
plentiful in fresh fruit and vegetables, is thought to increase significantly our susceptibility(敏感度) to colds and influenza.
The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruit and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say during extended periods of religious fasting(斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to make special provision to supply the missing vitamins.
64. Scurvy is a disease that is caused by _________.
A. salted meat and biscuits

A. not to eat much salted meat
B. to supplement our diet with various vitamin pills
C. to have more fresh fruit and vegetables

67. Based on the passage we can safely conclude that if our diet is NOT comprehensive

Rumor has it that more than 20 books on creationism/evolution are in the publisher’s pipelines. A few have already appeared. The goal of all will be to try to explain to a confused and often unenlightened citizenry that there are not two equally valid scientific theories for the origin and evolution of universe and life. Cosmology, geology, and biology have provided a consistent, unified, and constantly improving account of what happened. “Scientific” creationism, which is being pushed by some for “equal time” i n the classrooms whenever the scientific accounts of evolution are given, is based on religion, not science. Virtually all scientists and the majority of nonfundamentalist religious leaders have come to regard “scientific” creationism as bad science and ba d religion.
The first four chapters of Kitcher’s book give a very brief introduction to evolution. At appropriate places, he introduces the criticisms of the creationists and provides answers. In the last three chapters, he takes off his gloves and gives the creationists a good beating. He describes their programmes and tactics, and, for those unfamiliar with the ways of creationists, the extent of their deception and distortion may come as an unpleasant surprise. When their basic motivation is religious, one might have expected more Christian behavior.
Kitcher is a philosopher, and this may account, in part, for the clarity and
effectiveness of his arguments. The nonspecialist will be able to obtain at least a notion(概念) of the sorts of data and argument that support evolutionary theory. The final chapters on the creationists will be extremely clear to all. On the dust jacket of this fine book, Stephen Jay Gould says: “This book stands for reason itself.” And so it does—and all would be well were reason the only judge in the creationism/evolution debate.
68. “Creationism” in the passage refers to ________.
A. evolution in its true sense as to the origin of the universe
B. a notion of the creation of religion
C. the scientific explanation of the earth formation
D. the deceptive theory about the origin of the universe
69. Kitcher’s book is intended to _______.
A. recommend the views of the evolutionists
B. expose the true features of creationists
C. curse bitterly at his opponents
D. launch a surprise attack on creationists
70. From the passage we can infer that _______.
A. reasoning has played a decisive role in the debate
B. creationists do not base their argument on reasoning
C. evolutionary theory is too difficult for nonspecialists
D. creationism is supported by scientific findings
71. This passage appears to be a digest of _______.
A. a book review
B. a scientific paper
C. a magazine feature
D. a newspaper editorial

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches. Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named
Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.
72. Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?
A. The Britons got expensive tea from India.
B. Tea reached Britain from Holland.
C. The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank tea.
D. It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had tea.
73. Tea became a popular drink in Britain _______.
A. in eighteenth century
B. in sixteenth century
C. in seventeenth century
D. in the late seventeenth century
74. People in Europe began to drink tea with milk because ______.
A. it tasted like milk
B. it tasted more pleasant
C. it became a popular drink
D. Madame do Sevinge was such a lady with great social influence that people tried to copy the way she drank tea
75. We may infer from the passage that the habit of drinking tea in Britain was mostly due
to the influence of _______.
A. a famous French lady
B. the ancient Chinese
C. the upper social class
D. people in Holland
