I'm part of the Roots & Shoots program founded by Dr。
Jane Goodall。
The program is intended to make and promote positive changes in the world. As Dr。
Goodall says,“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
In Bulgaria, where I live, homeless dogs are everywhere。
Many people here turn a blind eye to them. But I cannot ignore the life of a street dog whenever I see one wandering in the street, looking for something to eat。
That’s why I’m no longer
6
a food waster。
When I see wasted food, I always think of a hungry dog climbing to garbage bins, searching for food that people have thrown there. When eating in a restaurant,I’m not afraid to take leftover food to feed stray ca ts or dogs。
A week ago, I saw a homeless dog around the garbage bins。
Immediately I knelt down, spoke to her softly and ran my hands over her. I could see that she had had puppies。
I couldn’t imagine how she could have been able to care for them. Hours e arlier,I'd bagged up a plate of leftover fish。
As I unwrapped it, she wagged her tail and sniffed at it。
She ate all the fish in no time。
It’s sad, isn't it? I can’t understand why many of us waste so much and think little of it. These homeless animals have taught me that food is precious。
Even when I don’t have leftovers with me,I’ll take the time to get something from the grocery store to feed them.
I know my power is small, so I hope that next time you see wasted food, do turn it into worthy food。
You have the power to save a life!

Think about the last time you felt afraid。
Was it a fear of height?Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear you’d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear。
But one woman, code—named “U M", gave her first—ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability
8
to feel afraid.
UM can’t tell you what fear is because she's never experienced it. “I wonder what it’s like to actually be afraid of something,” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach—Wieth disease, which is characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in the brain。
In the case of UM,the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear。
In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, “I was wa lking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said。
“Come here, please," so I went over to him。
He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, “Go ahead and cut me,” I wasn’t afraid at all。
And for some reason,he let me go。
”
Doctors who have been studying UM’s condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her。
They finally figured something out-increasing UM’s carbon dioxide levels.Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals。

There are two types of people in the world。
Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy。
This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds。
10
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather。
They enjoy all the cheerful things。
Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things。
Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied。
By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, hurt many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors。
The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people hurt many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes。
If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes
11
very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in the ir quarrels.
28.People who are unhappy ________.
A。
always consider things differently from others
B. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
C。

D。

A. makes others unhappy
B. has a good taste with social life
C. tend to scold others openly
D。

30.We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people

12
