I Can Do Housework!
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 8 years old. Today I want to tell you all about the different household chores I can do to help out around the house. Some kids might think chores are boring or no fun, but I actually really enjoy pitching in! It makes me feel so grown up and responsible.
One of my favorite chores is setting the table for meals. I love getting out all the plates, cups, napkins and utensils and arranging them nicely. I make sure to put a fork and knife on the left side of the plate, and a spoon on the right. The napkin goes under the fork. I try to make it look just like they do at fancy restaurants! Then I put a glass at the top corner of the placemat. Mom and Dad are always so impressed with how neatly I set the table.
Another chore I'm really good at is taking out the trash and recycling. Our trash can and recycling bin are pretty big, but I'm strong enough to carry them to the curb all by myself now that I'm getting bigger. I have to remember to hold them close to my body and keep my back straight, just like Mom taught me. After the truck comes to empty them, I bring the cans back up the
driveway. Sometimes there are still some crumpled papers or bottles in the bottom that fell out, so I make sure to pick those up too and put them in the right can.
Speaking of recycling, I'm the chief recycler in our house! Whenever someone is done with a plastic bottle, can, glass jar or cardboard box, they give it to me to recycle. I keep a separate bin in the garage just for recyclables. When it gets full, I transfer everything to the bigger recycling bin outside. I have to really stomp down on the bottles and cans to make room sometimes! I feel like a real recycling superhero helping the planet.
In the kitchen, one of my main jobs is loading and unloading the dishwasher. Mom always checks to make sure I've scraped the dirty dishes into the trash first before putting them in the racks. I have to be really careful when sliding the racks back in so I don't chip or break anything. I love the satisfaction of seeing all the nice, clean dishes when I open it after a cycle! Then I let the dishes cool down a bit before putting them all away in the cabinets. The glasses and mugs go up high where my little sister can't reach.
My chores aren't just inside the house though - I also help out in the yard too! I'm really good at pulling weeds from the garden and flower beds. You have to make sure to get the whole
root so they don't grow back. I also like raking up fallen leaves and sticks. We have a big tree in the backyard that drops tons of leaves in the fall. I have my own special kid-sized rake that fits me perfectly. When I'm doing a good job, Dad lets me jump into the big leaf pile at the end!
In the summer, one of my jobs is to water all the plants, flowers and vegetable garden with the hose or watering can. You have to be really careful not to squish or break the plants, and make sure to get the base of the stem too. I always check to see if the soil is dry before watering. Dad has taught me exactly how much each type of plant needs. The veggie garden is my favorite to water because I can eat the strawberries, tomatoes and carrots right off the vine when I'm done!
I know I'm still a kid, but I feel so mature and responsible when I'm doing my chores. It's hard work, but so satisfying once you've finished a job. Plus, it gives me bonding time with my parents as we take care of our home together. Maybe after hearing about all the things I can do, you'll be inspired to start helping out around the house more too! Just remember - chores don't have to be a bore. What chores do you like doing best?。
