第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Kids seem to spend endless hours on smartphones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.
There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness—or myopia as it’s officially known—over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue. “The main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing shortsightedness.”
Professor Hammond sa ys, “It may be there’s no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all relate may to be the that maths league tables(排名表). These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying close up. Therefore the concern is that all close work—like playing with the iPhone—carries the potential that it could make them more shortsighted.”
The best thing to do, say the experts, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. “In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming short-sighted in children. Healthy diet is really also important—in terms of getting oily fish, green vegetables, green leafy vegetables as much as possible.
“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these activities have on their visual development.” Professor Hammond said, “There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isn’t any data out there at the moment in terms of the question, ‘Could the drops we use slow progression or stop myopia developing at all? ‘ ”
1、What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Much natural light. B.Running around outside.
C.Computers or smartphones. D.Less exposure to sunshine.
2、What does Professor Hammond think of short-sightedness among East Asian children?
A.It appears quite by chance. B.It is not serious enough.
C.It largely relate to iPad or iPhone. D.It connects with their study pressure.
3、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The myopic students will decrease in the future.
B.Researchers have found methods to reduce myopia.
C.It’s still a hard job to control the children’s myopia.
D.Researchers needn’t collect any more data on myopia.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.Common troubles of students
B.Problems caused by short-sightedness
C.Staying outdoors more to keep good eyesight
D.The importance of protecting kids
22.(8分)The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is uno rganized”. Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a
sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”
1、From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.
A.millions of people are threatened with cancer

C.about two thirds of medicinal species will disappear
D.a number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction
2、The major factor that causes the decreasing of supplies of medicinal plants is
________.
A.over-harvesting B.habitat destruction
C.pollution D.invasive species
3、The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.pollution B.other species’ invasion
C.sustainability D.over-harvesting
4、What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go.
B.Local people don’t know how to protect medicinal plants.
C.Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants’ future.
D.China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants.
23.(8分)It was at her company’s annual picnic that my mother met my father, and he walked her home. The next week, from his home in Chicago, he sent her a post card: Remember me please. Do be calling you one of these days.—David.
She still has that post card. I am not sure what made her save. Though he already had his heart set on her, she hadn't chosen him yet, at least not consciously.
My father, a salesman for a big electronics company, often told us while we were
growing up, it was blind luck that he was at the picnic that day. He was in town to meet with clients and happened to stop by the branch office that Saturday morning to make a call. It was the manager of a local radio station where my mother worked as a writer. “Dave! Glad you’re in town!” he said, and invited him to come right over to their annual picnic. Later my mother dated him when he was in town. Eventually, one night a few months later, she woke her mother and told her she was going to marry Dave. A few months after the wedding, my father was transferred east. They settled in New York, in the house where I grew up.
Sometimes I think how time gets us together and puts us in a certain place where we’re faced with one opti on or another. We leave behind while others live by the choice we made. We could have lived full of different passions and joys, different problems and disappointments. Sometimes, particularly when I came home late to a sleeping house, my husband and daughter curled around each other. I think about the lives we would not have had if choices had brought us to a different place. And I tremble at the thought that I might have missed this life, this man, this child, this love.

24.(8分)Tim Ma's parents came to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s. They opened a restaurant. It was not a success. They found success in America,
however, in computers and engineering. In part because of their own experiences, Ma's parents hoped he would study to become an engineer or doctor. They wanted financial security for their child.
Growing up, Ma considered many professions – writer, fireman, even president.
But he had a sense early on... ―I didn't want to be an engineer. However, Ma did well in math and science classes in high school and he ended up choosing to study electrical engineering in college.
Several engineering jobs later, though, Ma had a change of heart. He wanted to leave the engineering world behind and enter the restaurant business. It was in his blood. After all, his parents had owned a Chinese restaurant in Arkansas. His uncle also owned one in New York.
His parents, Ma says, could not understand why he would want to leave such a good job to open a restaurant. They had worked long hours but their own restaurant still f ailed. They kept asking, ―Why?
But Ma remained certain. He was going to do things differently than his parents. He was able to learn from their one major mistake as restaurant owners – they knew very little about the art of cooking. So, at age 30, Ma left engineering and returned to school – cooking school.
Ma soon learned that he enjoyed cooking. In 2009, Ma opened his first restaurant
in Virginia. It is called Maple Avenue. At Maple Avenue, Ma cooked, cleaned the ovens, fixed equipment and paid bills. He worked long hours, seven days a week. His long hours paid off. Ma opened his fourth restaurant last year, Kyirisan in Washington, D.C.
Kyirisan's success is due to the creative menu and food, Ma says. But mostly it just comes from completely hard work. ―I think in this country you can create your own success, just by working hard. Not because you're smarter than anybody, not because you're more creative than anybody, just by working hard. And I think that's why a lot of people end up coming to America.
1、Wh y did Ma’s parents want him to become an engineer or doctor?
A.Their family had found success in engineering for generations.
B.They were tired of running a restaurant.
C.They thought it financially secure to be an engineer or doctor.
D.They wanted him to try a career different from theirs.
2、Why do a lot of people come to America?
A.They can learn many things. B.They can run their business creatively. C.They can choose jobs freely. D.They can succeed through hard work.
3、What can be the best title for the text?
A.A suitable job B.Follow your heart
C.A successful business D.Create your own business 25.(10分)Mrs. Jones was my first patient when I started medical school—and I owe her a lot.
She was under my care for the first two years of my medical training, yet I knew very little about her, except that she was thin, perhaps in her mid 70s. It might seem rather negligent not to know the basic facts of my patient, but I had a valid reason—Mrs. Jones was dead, and had been dead for about three years before I made a patient of her. Mrs. Jones was the dead body that I dissected(解剖)over the first two years of my medical training.
Of course, her name wasn’t really Mrs. Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone’s body without even kn owing its name, so out of courtesy, I thought she should have one. “Me and Mrs. Jones, we’ve got a thing going on,” went the song coming out of the radio as I unzipped the bag of her on my first day — and so she was christened.
As the months passed, I soon forgot that Mrs. Jones had, in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she suddenly became very human again. I’d been dissecting Mrs. Jones a good 18 months before I got around to the uterus(子宫). After I’d removed it, the professor came up to me, “If you look at the opening carefully, you’ll see that the angle indicates that this woman has had several children, probably three.” I stared at it, and I suddenly felt very strange. This woman, who had given me something incredibly precious that I’d begun to take for granted, wasn’t a dead body. She was a person, a mother, in fact.
At my graduation, the same professor came over to congratulate me. I explained the story about Mrs. Jones to him, and recalled what he’d told me about her having children and how that had affected me all those years ago.
“Well,” he said, “at the beginning of your training you had a dead body and
managed to turn it into a person. Now you’re a doctor, the trick is to have a person and not turn them into a dead body,” and he laughed, shook my hand and walked away.
1、Why didn’t the author know much about Mrs. Jones?
A.Because he was irresponsible for his patients.
B.Because he wasn’t allowed to ask for her privacy.
C.Because he didn’t know her until she passed away.
D.Because he was too careless while dissecting her.
2、How did Mrs. Jones get her name?
A.It was passed down from the seniors of my school.
B.It came from a song being played when we first met.
C.She was named after a well-known singer I liked best.
D.It just occurred to me when I opened the bag of her.
3、What could be the author’s feeling for Mrs. Jones now?
A.Grateful. B.Pitiless.
C.Hateful. D.Guilty.
4、What did the professor imply by his words in the last paragraph?
A.Medical students are able to bring the dead back to life.
B.Being a doctor has nothing to do with the medical training.
C.Good doctors never fail to save their patients from dying.
D.Medical staff ought to have respect for life and humanity.

Nowadays we are living in an information age, when TV, cellphones and the web are using widely. It seems that many people can’t enjoy himself without them. However, were I to give up one of them, I will turn off my TV, but not cutting off the Internet. The reason is because there are few shows I fancy and there are too many commercials. What’s worse, most programs on the TV are also available somewhere else. Not only cellphones but also the web are necessary for me. I need a cellphone to keep touch with my friends and family. And almost all informations can be gathered on the Internet.
