At the age of thirteen, I had difficulty with schoolwork. I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”
She glanced down at me through her glasses, “you are no different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Lou is Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, h e invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his
problems, why should I ever give up?
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”
21. The author didn’t finish the reading in class because______________.
A. he had an attention disorder
B. he was tired of literature
C. he was new to the class
D. he wanted to take the task home
22. What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?
A. He had good sight.
B. He gave up reading.
C. He made a great invention.
D. He learned a lot from school.
23. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges.
B. A teacher can open up a new world to students.
C. The disabled should be treated with respect.
D. One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.

A well-known poem by Tang Dynasty writer Du Mu tells of a sad s cene in early April: “Rains fall heavily as Qingming comes, and passers-by with lowered spirits go.” Qingming Day, the traditional Tomb-sweeping Day, falls on April 4-6 each year. It is a time for remembering loved ones who have been dead. People visit the ir ancestors’ graves to sweep away the dirt.
Its origin dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Jin prince Chong’er ran away from the country with his supporters due to persecution. They were homeless for 19 years and things got so bad that Chong’er began to starve to death. One of the prince’s faithful followers, Jie Zitui, cut a piece of muscle from his own leg and served it to his master. Chong’er was saved and, in 636 BC, he took back the throne.
He rewarded the officials who had stayed loyal to him but he forgot about Jie Zitui. By the time Chong’er remembered him, a heart-broken Jie Zitui had traveled deep into the mountains. Chong’er wanted to persuade Jie to come home, so he had the hills set on fire. But Jie was later
found beside a large tree, with his old mother on his back. Both were dead.
Saddened by the tragedy, Chong’er ordered that fires could not be lit on the day of Jie Zitui’s death. From this comes Hanshi Day, or Cold Food Day. People visited Jie Zitui’s tomb the next day to pay their respects. Over time, Hanshi Day was replaced with Tomb-sweeping Day.
There are many Qingming rituals(仪式) which include pulling out weeds around the headstone, cleaning the stone and replacing wilted or dead flowers with fresh ones. People also burn incense and paper money. The paper money is for the dead to use in the afterlife. You’ll even see food arranged on headstones but it’s not a picnic. The food is an offering to the spirits. Three sets of Chinese chopsticks and three Chinese wine cups are also placed above the food, close to the headstone.
Other rituals include family members pouring wine on the grave or setting off fireworks to scare away evil spirits. The fireworks also let dead loved ones know they are there to pay their respects. Legend has it that unhappy spirits wonder the earth on Qingming Day. It’s considered bad luck to do important business or have an operation on April 5th. Stick to hanging out in the cemetery and offering your ancestors food and fake money.

A. Du Mu
B. Chong’er
C. Jie Zitui
D. Jie Zitui’s mother

Millions of children in the United States go to summer camp. Some go to play outdoors at traditional camps in the woods, in the mountains or on a lake.
But families now have many choices of specialty camps. These can be in the middle of nature or a big city. Specialty camps offer young people the chance to learn about different subjects, anything from space exploration to business to medicine.
In technology camps, one subject that children can learn about is video game design. They learn how to use computer programs to create games of their own.
One program that teaches video game design is called Cybercamps, located at the University of Maryland. Children can learn how to design their own virtual world to set their video game in. Then, they program their own rules and objects into the game.
Cybercamps also offers courses in robot building and Web design. A recent story in the Washington Post described how one child made a robot that could sing a song. Another made a robot that could follow a black line drawn on a piece of cardboard. Also, children can learn how to make websites. One child made a site for Pokemon, one of his favorite cartoon shows.
Kids-N-Technology is a day camp offered in several American cities. Boys and girls aged eight to eighteen get the chance to build their own desktop or laptop computer or game machine. They take it home after the camp is over.
In the past twenty years, the number of day camps in the United States has grown by almost 90 percent. Still, more than half of all camps are overnight camps. But the American Camp Association says, over all, the most popular length of time for kids to attend a summer camp is one week or less.
28. Why are the specialty camps popular with young people?
A. Because they are often held in the woods, in the mountains or on a lake.
B. Because they can offer young people the chance to learn about different subjects.
C. Because they are often held in the middle of a big city.
D. Because young people can learn about video game design in the camps.
29. Cybercamps offers children courses in ________.
A. video game design, robot building or Web design
B. space exploration, business or medicine
C. building desktop or laptop computer or game machine
D. maths, physics or chemistry
30. Most of the summer camps in the United States are ________.
A. organized in the day
B. about computers and Web
C. in the center of big cities
D. not more than one week
31. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Parents tend to(倾向于) let their children go to traditional camps.
B. Kids-N-Technology is located at the University of Maryland.
C. Day camps are getting more and more popular in the United States.
D. Robot building is best received by the children in summer camps.

According to a recent study by Keith Robinson, children’s school grades may be brought down by their parents who help their children with homework. Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and watch ing a child’s class carefully, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.
The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting (养育子女) where schools expect them to act as partners in their children’s education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.
Keith Robinson, the author of the study, said, “I really don't know if the public is ready for this
but there are some ways parents pay too much attention to their kids’ education that leads to declines (下降) in their performance at school. One of the things that was consistently not beneficial was parents’ help with homework.” Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the tasks. “They may either not remember the material their kids are s tudying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they’re still offering advice.”
Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.
Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because “children with good academic success do have involved parents”, admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success. “A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. In a more reasonable way, they made their children know how success at school could improve their lives.”
32. The underlined expression “parental involvement” in Paragraph 1 probably means _________.
A. parents’ participation (参与) in children’s education
B. parents’ expectation on children’s health
C. parents’ control over children’s life
D. parents’ plan for children’s future
33. What is the major finding of Robinson’s study?
A. Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.
B. Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.
C. Parents are not able to help with children’s homework.
D. Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.
34. The example of Asian-American parents suggests that parents should______________.
A. take a more active part in school management
B. set a specific life goal for their children
C. help children realize the importance of schooling
D. spend more time improving their own lives
35. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Volunteering at school and watch ing a child’s class carefully help children get good grades.
B. Schools expect parents to involve themselves in children’s education.
C. Robinson advises that parents punish children for their poor marks.
D. Parents can offer advice to children about their homework because they’ve learnt all the
subjects children are studying now.
解析:
考点:子女教育—议论文
难度:3
文章大意:最新的一项研究发现,父母帮助孩子完成家庭作业或以其他方式参与到孩子的教育中会对孩子的学业产生不利的影响。
32.答案:A
解析:考查词义猜测。
从划线部分前面的“help their children with homework”以及后面的“including volunteering at school and watching a child’s class carefully”可以推断出该短语的意思是“父母参与到孩子教育中”。
33.答案:D
解析:细节推断题。
从第四段的“In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant”可知Robinson的研究表明,大约20%的父母的参与是积极的,大约45%的父母的参与是消极的,剩余的是无统计学意义的。
通过这些数据可以判断出,父母的参与没有想象中的那么有益。
34.答案:C
解析:考查推理判断。
根据文章最后一段中的“In a more reasonable way, they made their children know how success at school could improve their lives”可知,美籍亚裔父母向他们的孩子传递的信息是学校里的成功如何能改善他们的生活,也就是说,父母应该帮助他们的孩子意识到学校教育的重要性。
故答案为C。
35.答案:B
解析:考查细节推断。
根据文章第二段的“schools expect them to act as partners in their children’s education”可知,当今主流的养育子女的观念中,学校都期待家长能多参与孩子的教育,故答案为B。
根据第一段的“volunteering at school and watch ing a child’s class carefully, also fail to help”可知A错误;根据第四段的“found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks”可知C错误;根据第三段的“They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they’re still offering advice”可知D错误。
长难句解析:
1.Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and watch ing a child’s
class carefully, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.
“including volunteering at school and watch ing a child’s class carefully”意为“包括在学校里当志愿者和观察孩子的课堂”,这里including是介词,引出的短语对前面other forms of parental involvement进行补充说明。
2.The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting (养育子女) where schools expect
them to act as partners in their children’s education.
where 引导的是定语从句,先行词是a key principle。
3. A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly
involved.
that引导的是表语从句,其中又包含定语从句whose kids are doing so well in school,修饰Asian-American parents。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you love eating Western food like steak and hamburgers? Do you know the spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment?
David Tilman is a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota. In the study, he examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health.
36 He found that as nations industrialized(工业化), and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.
The Western diet is characterized by red meat rich in fat and cheese which are high in sugar
and oil. 37
It is well-known that overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病) and heart diseases. Because of the diet, diabetes is shooting to very high rates in the United States and across Europe. Heart disease is also rising rapidly in the Western countries.
38 As these countries become industrialized, they also adopt the Western diet. China is an example where the number of diabetes and heart disease cases has jumped.
39 On the one hand, more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle which eat growing grass. These areas will be needed to meet the increasing demand for red meat. On the other hand, more greenhouse gases are released from agriculture because of this dietary shift. So our change in diet has a bad effect on the global warming.
40 Mr. Tilman says one possible solution is that we must make a change in our eating habits: leaving the Western diet behind.
A. By eating these foods, people tend to gain weight.
B. Why is the Western diet so popular in these countries?
C. Mr Tilman noticed a diet tendency(趋势) beginning in the 1960s.
D. Unfortunately it is now the case in many developing countries.
E. And, a diet bad for human beings is also bad for the environment.
F. Diseases like diabetes and heart diseases are closely related to the diet.
G. Of course, there are some ways to solve this diet-health-environment problem.
