My English Learning Journey
Hello, my name is Xiao Ming, and I'm a fifth-grade student at Nanyang Elementary School. I'm so excited to share with you my journey of learning English this year. It's been an amazing experience, and I've learned so much!
Unit 1: My Family and Friends
In the first unit, we learned how to introduce ourselves and our families. I can now tell you all about my parents, my little sister, and even my grandparents. My favorite part was when we had to draw our family trees and present them to the class. I was a little nervous at first, but my teacher, Ms. Li, encouraged me, and I did a great job!
We also learned how to describe our friends and their personalities. I have two best friends, Xiao Hua and Xiao Li. Xiao Hua is funny and always makes me laugh, while Xiao Li is kind and helpful. We like to play basketball together during recess.
Unit 2: My Daily Routine
In the second unit, we learned how to talk about our daily routines. I can now tell you what I do from the moment I wake up until I go to bed at night.
In the morning, I wake up at 7 o'clock, brush my teeth, and get dressed for school. After breakfast, my mom walks me to school, and I attend my classes. My favorite subjects are English and art. During lunchtime, I eat in the cafeteria with my friends, and we play games together.
After school, I go home, have a snack, and do my homework. In the evening, I help my mom with chores, like setting the table for dinner. After dinner, I take a bath and get ready for bed. Before I sleep, I like to read my favorite storybooks.
Unit 3: My Hobbies and Interests
The third unit was all about hobbies and interests, and I had so much fun learning about different activities.
My favorite hobby is drawing and painting. I love to create pictures of animals, landscapes, and even my family members. Sometimes, I also enjoy writing short stories and poems. During the weekends, I like to go to the park with my parents and fly kites or play badminton.
In this unit, we also learned about different sports and games. I learned that basketball, football, and volleyball are popular sports in many countries. I also discovered new games like chess and checkers, which I find really interesting and challenging.
Learning English has been an incredible journey so far, and I'm excited to continue exploring new topics and expanding my knowledge. I love how English allows me to communicate with people from different parts of the world and learn about their cultures and traditions.
Thank you for reading about my English learning experience.
I hope you found it interesting and inspiring. Until next time, goodbye!

My English Lessons - A Journey Through Three Units
Hi there! I'm a 5th grader studying English at a school in Nanyang, Henan province. Our English lessons this semester have been super fun and I've learned so many new words and grammar points. Let me tell you all about the three units we covered!
Unit 1: My Day
In this unit, we learned how to talk about our daily routines and schedule. The first thing we covered were times of the day like morning, afternoon, evening and night. Then we moved on to talking about different activities we do at certain times.
For example, I wake up at 7 o'clock in the morning. I get dressed, brush my teeth, and have breakfast. At 8 o'clock, I go to school. My classes start at 8:30 am. I have math, Chinese, and English in the morning. At noon, I eat my lunch in the cafeteria.
In the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm, I have science, PE, and art class. I really like art because I get to paint and draw pictures. After school at 4:30pm, I go home and do my homework. In the evening around 6pm, my family has dinner together. After dinner, I play outside or watch TV. I go to bed at 9pm.
We also learned how to use phrases like "first, next, then, after that" to sequence our daily activities. My teacher had us write out our schedules and routines using this vocabulary. It was great practice!
Unit 2: My Family
This unit was all about learning words to describe our family members. We started off by learning the basics like mom, dad,
sister, brother, grandma, and grandpa. Then we got into some more advanced terms like aunt, uncle, cousin, niece and nephew.
I have a pretty big family. I live with my mom, dad, older brother and younger sister. My grandparents live nearby too. I see my grandma and grandpa almost every weekend. My aunt, uncle and cousins live in a city three hours away, so I only see them a few times per year.
We also learned how to describe our family using adjectives like "tall, short, young, old, kind, funny, etc." For example, my dad is tall and kind. My mom is short and funny. My grandpa is old but very active. My younger sister is small and loud!
For our final assignment, we had to describe our families using all the vocabulary we learned. I really enjoyed writing about my big, loving family.
Unit 3: My Hobbies
The last unit was super engaging because it was all about hobbies and free-time activities. First, we went over the names of common hobbies like reading, playing sports, drawing, singing, dancing, etc.
Then we learned how to express likes and dislikes using "I like..." or "I don't like..." For instance, I like reading books but I don't like singing. I also like playing badminton and table tennis.
We talked about how some hobbies are indoor activities and some are outdoor activities. Reading is an indoor hobby I can do anytime at home. Playing sports like badminton are outdoor activities I can only do outside.
For this unit, we had to write about three of our favorite hobbies. I wrote about reading novels, playing badminton, and drawing pictures. I described what I like about each hobby and when/where I do it.
At the end, we even had a "Hobby Week" at school! Each student gave a presentation about their favorite hobby. Some sang songs, some showed their stamp or coin collections, and others did science experiments. It was so much fun getting to see what unique hobbies my classmates enjoy.
Well, that's a wrap on my three English units this semester! I'm feeling much more confident using everyday vocabulary about my routines, family, and hobbies. Learning English is hard work but so rewarding. Maybe next semester I'll learn how to write even longer essays like this one! Goodbye for now!

My English Class in Fifth Grade
Hello! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a fifth grade student at Nanyang No. 3 Primary School. I really enjoy learning English and wanted to share about some of the units we covered in my English class this year.
Unit 1: My Family
The first unit was all about families. We learned vocabulary words like mother, father, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa and more. Our teacher taught us how to introduce our family members using phrases like "This is my..."
I have a pretty big family. I live with my mom, dad, older brother, younger sister, and both sets of grandparents. We all live together in one house! At first it was hard keeping all the English words for my relatives straight. Like is auntie the same as grandma? But now I can introduce everybody.
We also learned about describing people's appearance and personalities. I can say things like "My dad is tall with short black hair" or "My grandma is very kind and patient." Describing my
crazy little brother is easy - I just say "My brother is very naughty!"
For our final project, we wrote a short paragraph about our families. I liked writing about all the fun we have together, like watching movies, playing games, and eating dumplings my grandma makes. Even though we drive each other crazy sometimes, I love my big family.
Unit 2: My Day
The second unit was called "My Day" and was all about our daily routines and schedules. We learned vocab for things we do in the morning like wake up, brush teeth, get dressed, etc. We also covered activities during the day like go to school, have classes, play at recess, and do homework.
One thing I thought was really cool was learning to tell time.
I can now read clocks and say things like "I wake up at 7:00 am" or "I eat lunch at 12:30 pm." Isn't that neat? We also learned uesful phrases like "in the morning," "in the afternoon," and "at night."
My favorite part was describing our after school activities. I play badminton every day from 5:00 to 6:30. So I can say "In the evening, I play badminton." A lot of my classmates take classes
like piano, art, or math tutoring. One boy said "After school, I go to Kumon from 4:00 to 6:00."
For our final speaking project, we had to present our daily schedule from when we wake up to when we go to sleep. I started by saying "I wake up at 7 am. I brush my teeth and get dressed..." I included details about my school schedule, badminton practice, eating meals, doing homework and finally going to bed at 9 pm. It felt so grown up to discuss my entire day just in English!
Unit 3: My Hobbies
The third and final unit we covered was "My Hobbies." This was my favorite unit because I love talking about all the activities I enjoy. First we went over vocabulary for common hobbies like reading, hiking, swimming, collecting, drawing, and playing sports or instruments. Then we learned how to express our likes and dislikes with phrases like "I love..." or "I hate..."
Next we practiced describing our hobbies in more detail. For example, I could explain "I love badminton because it's fun and good exercise. I practice every day for 1.5 hours after school." Or "I hate hiking because it's too tiring. My legs always get sore."
We also learned how to ask and answer questions about each other's hobbies. Like I could ask "What hobbies do you have?" Then my friend could respond "I collect stamps and I play the piano." It was fun learning about all the different activities my classmates enjoy.
My favorite part was our final presentation on our number one hobby. I chose badminton because it's my biggest passion. First I introduced it by saying "My favorite hobby is badminton. I've been playing for 3 years." Then I gave more details like "Badminton is a very fast and exciting sport. You need quickness, stamina, and excellent hand-eye coordination." I concluded by saying "Badminton brings me great joy and I hope to keep playing for many years."
So those were the three main units we covered this year in English class: families, daily routines, and hobbies. Even though English is really hard sometimes, I feel like I learned so many useful words and phrases. My parents are very proud of my progress. I'm already looking forward to next year's English units!

My 5th Grade English Textbook Adventures
Hi there! I'm Zhang Xiaoming, a fifth-grader from Nanyang, Henan Province. I love learning English, and this year, our textbook has taken us on some incredible adventures. Let me tell you all about the three units we've covered so far!
Unit 1: My Favorite Season
The first unit was all about seasons, and I have to say, autumn is my favorite! We learned so many words related to this beautiful time of year, like "leaves," "harvest," and "sweater." My teacher showed us pictures of trees with brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves, and we talked about how the weather gets cooler and crisper.
One of the readings was about a family who went apple picking in the fall. I've never been apple picking before, but it sounds like so much fun! Imagine walking through an orchard, plucking juicy apples right off the trees, and filling up your basket. Maybe my family can go next autumn.
We also learned how to describe the weather using phrases like "it's cloudy," "it's windy," and "it's raining." During our speaking activities, we pretended to be weather reporters and gave forecasts for the week. I even made up a silly dance to help me remember the vocabulary – my classmates thought I was hilarious!
Unit 2: Let's Celebrate!
The second unit was all about holidays and celebrations, which was super exciting! We learned about different festivals from around the world, like Christmas, Diwali, and the Chinese New Year.
One of my favorite readings was about a little girl named Sarah who celebrated her birthday. She had a big party with balloons, cake, and presents. We talked about birthday traditions in different countries, like making a wish when blowing out the candles or getting your face pushed into the cake (which sounds messy but fun!).
We also learned how to use phrases like "Happy New Year!" and "Merry Christmas!" in our dialogues. During our role-plays, we pretended to be guests at a party, greeting each other and exchanging holiday wishes. I even got to wear a silly party hat!
Oh, and we can't forget about the vocabulary for party foods and decorations. I learned words like "candy," "streamers," and "piñata." My mouth was watering just thinking about all the delicious treats!
Unit 3: Let's Go Shopping!
The third unit was all about shopping, which is one of my favorite activities (especially when it comes to buying new toys or books!).
We learned so many useful phrases for going to the store, like "How much does it cost?" and "Can I try it on?" We practiced dialogues between customers and salespeople, taking turns being the buyer and the seller. I had a blast pretending to haggle over prices and negotiating for discounts.
One of the readings was about a boy named Tom who went to the mall with his mom. They went to different stores, tried on clothes, and even stopped for ice cream. It made me want to go on a shopping trip of my own!
We also learned vocabulary for different types of stores and products, like "bookstore," "electronics," and "jewelry." During our vocabulary activities, we had to sort different items into categories, like "things you'd find in a toy store" or "things you'd find in a grocery store."
Whew, that's a lot of English learning in just three units! I can't wait to see what other adventures our textbook has in store for us. Maybe we'll learn about sports, animals, or even outer space next.
I've had so much fun practicing my English skills through readings, dialogues, role-plays, and vocabulary activities. My teachers make learning feel like a game, and I'm always excited to see what's coming next.
If you're a fellow English learner, I hope you're having just as much fun as I am. Keep practicing, keep exploring, and who knows? Maybe one day we'll be able to chat in English like old friends.
Until then, happy learning, everyone!
Sincerely,
Zhang Xiaoming

My Favorite Things from English Class
Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm a fifth grader. In English class this year, we've learned so many fun and interesting things.
I want to tell you about my three favorite units we've studied so far.
Unit 1: My Family
The first unit was all about families. We learned how to introduce our family members in English - mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa and more. I really enjoyed this unit because my family is so important to me.
I have a pretty big family. I live with my mom, dad, older brother James, and younger sister Emma. My grandparents live nearby too. We see them almost every weekend. My grandma is an amazing cook and always makes delicious dumplings for us. Yum!
In this unit, we also talked about what different family members like to do for fun. My dad really loves playing basketball, while my mom prefers reading novels. James is obsessed with video games, and little Emma can't get enough of her stuffed animal collection. As for me, I'm a big fan of art class at school. I love painting and drawing.
For our big project, we had to make a family tree poster and present it to the class. I made sure to include photos and draw portraits of everyone. I told funny stories about each person too. My presentation made the whole class laugh!
Unit 2: My Neighborhood
The second unit focused on our neighborhoods. We learned vocabulary words like park, library, grocery store, restaurant, and more. Then we described what's in our own neighborhoods.
I live in a pretty cool neighborhood in the city. Just down the street from my house, there's a huge park with a playground, walking trails, and a pond with ducks. My friends and I love going there after school to play on the swings and slides. There's also a basketball court where we sometimes see teenagers playing games.
Not far from the park, there's a shopping area with lots of neat shops and restaurants. My favorite is the ice cream parlor that has about a million flavors! My family goes there for treats sometimes. There's also a movie theater, bookstore, toy store and a few different restaurants like Chinese, Italian, and Mexican food.
For our project, we had to create a neighborhood map and describe all the places with words and pictures. I tried to make my map look just like my real neighborhood. I even included my house and the park where I play. I think I did a pretty good job!
Unit 3: Animals
My absolute favorite unit so far was all about animals! We learned animal names, characteristics, habitats, and more. We watched videos of animals in the wild and at zoos. It was just so fun and interesting.
There are so many cool animals in the world. Some of my personal favorites are elephants, dolphins, and pandas. Elephants are the biggest land animals and are incredibly strong. They're also highly intelligent and have excellent memories. Dolphins are super smart too and can do amazing tricks like jumping through hoops. And pandas? They're just the cutest things ever with their black and white fur!
For our unit project, we had to research an animal, create a diorama scene of its habitat, and give a presentation about the animal. I chose to do mine on sea turtles. Do you know how big they can get? Some species can weigh over 700 pounds! I built a shoebox diorama of a sea turtle swimming in the ocean with coral, fish, and plants all around. I really enjoyed learning all about their lives.
Well, that's a quick overview of my favorite units so far in English class. We've covered families, neighborhoods, and incredible animals from all over the world. I've learned so much new vocabulary and had a blast with all the hands-on projects
and presentations. Who knew English class could be this much fun?
I can't wait to see what other cool stuff we get to learn about soon. Maybe the next unit will be about sports, space, or even famous people from history. Whatever it is, I'll be sure to pay close attention and work really hard. After all, learning English is so important for my future.
Okay, that's all from me for now. Thanks for reading about my English class adventures so far. Study hard and maybe I'll see you around the neighborhood one day!
Your friend,
Lily

My Name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th Grade
Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grade student at Nanyang No. 3 Primary School in Henan Province. I really love learning English and wanted to share some of the fun and interesting things I've learned this year from my English textbook.
In Unit 1, we learned all about introductions and greetings. Making new friends is so exciting! I now know how to introduce myself in English:
"Hello, my name is Xiaoming. I'm 10 years old and I'm from Nanyang. It's very nice to meet you!"
I can also ask someone their name, age, and where they are from. Knowing how to greet people properly is very important. We practiced introducing ourselves and role-playing meeting new friends. It was a little scary at first, but now I feel confident!
Another key part of Unit 1 was learning the English alphabet and how to spell words. That was pretty tricky because English has so many strange letter combinations that don't sound the way I expected. Like "ph" makes the "f" sound? So weird! But I practiced over and over and now I can spell my name and lots of other words. My favorite letters are X, Z and Q because they look so cool and different from Chinese characters.
In Unit 2, we learned tons of vocabulary words for different categories like colors, numbers, classroom objects, fruits and vegetables. It's amazing how many new words I know now!
My favorite color words are "turquoise" and "fuchsia." Such pretty names for such pretty colors. I used to just know "red,"
"blue," "yellow," etc. but now I can say "I love your crimson shirt!" or "That emerald necklace is gorgeous!" Speaking of colors, I learned the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Indigo is such an exotic, mysterious color.
For numbers, I'm a pro all the way up to 100 now. I can count, add, subtract, and compare numbers like there's no tomorrow. "What's 57 + 29?" Easy - 86! I've also learned neat number word quirks like "11 and 12" don't get the "-teen" ending. Isn't English fun and logical?
In the classroom objects category, words like "stapler," "paperclips," and "whiteboard" used to be brand new to me. But now not only can I say them, I can describe their features and functions. "This wooden ruler is 30 centimeters long and you use it to draw straight lines." See? Told you I'm an expert now!
For fruits and veggies, I know alllll the names in English. Kiwi, dragonfruit, artichoke, you name it. I also learned fun facts, like a tomato is technically a fruit since it has seeds! And carrots, radishes and beets all grow underground as roots. My favorite fruit is lychee because of its sweet taste and cool spiky texture. Yum!
Unit 3 was super engaging because it covered lots of fun topics like sports, hobbies, abilities, and daily routines. First up,
sports! I'm a huge fan of basketball, table tennis, and badminton. In English I can now name the equipment for each sport, the rules, and explain how to play. My greatest skill is dribbling a basketball - I'm a pro! I learned words like "dribble," "slam dunk," and "free throw." Too bad I'm not tall enough to actually slam dunk...yet!
For hobbies, I'm really into reading comics/graphic novels, collecting stickers and keychains, and doing arts & crafts. We learned vocabulary around all those interests plus others like hiking, camping, fishing, you name it. I can explain all my hobbies using great descriptive English now.
"On weekends, I love reading Japanese manga comics about fantasy adventures and sci-fi technology. My favorite is Dragonmasters vs Cybernetics! I'm also an avid collector of puffy stickers featuring cute animals. Hampsters, puppies, kittens, so adorable! And if I'm not reading or adding to my sticker collections, you can find me folding origami paper cranes and making bracelets out of embroidery floss."
See? I sound like a proper little English-speaking hobby enthusiast now!
This unit also covered abilities using "can" and "can't." Like "I can run really fast" or "I can't whistle very well." We had tons of
fun conversation practice around what we're good and not good at. I'm still working on my English pronunciation, especially words with L's and R's. Those get me every time! But I can make awesome hand puppet shows using different voices. Definitely a skill of mine.
Lastly, we talked all about daily routines. Using simple present tense, I can explain everything I do from waking up to going to bed. Here's a preview:
"I wake up at 6:30am every morning. First, I make my bed and get dressed for school. Then I eat breakfast - typically congee with pickles and a fried dough stick. After that, I brush my teeth, put on my backpack, and walk to school. My first class starts at 8am...
...Throughout the day I have Chinese, math, PE, science and computer classes. At noon I each lunch in the cafeteria with my friends..."
I could honestly go on forever! Talking about my schedule, classes, afterschool activities, homework time, dinner, TV shows I watch, when I take a bath...you get the picture. I'm an expert on daily routines now too.
Phew! I've covered sooooo many English topics and skills this year already. I can greet people properly, spell words, talk about all kinds of vocabulary categories, explain my
hobbies/abilities, discuss sports, and describe my daily routine. You would be amazed if you could see how many pages of notes I've filled up in my English notebook!
I have two more units left to go this year. Next up is learning about locations, giving directions, and talking about the weather and seasons. Then the final unit covers occupations, future plans, and making suggestions. I'm a sponge and can't wait to soak up even more practical English!
Studying English is my favorite subject. The alphabet, vocabulary, grammar...it's all so fun and fascinating to me. Maybe one day I'll be a diplomat and travel all around the world speaking English everywhere I go! Or who knows, perhaps I'll become an English teacher just like my beloved Mrs. Zhang. No matter what, English will always be a huge part of my life.
Okay, that's all for my update! Thanks for reading about my English learning journey so far this year. I'll continue working hard every day. You know what they say: "Practice makes perfect!" Or I guess a more fitting phrase is...
"Practice makes progress!"
加油!。
