In 2015, a man named Nigel Richards memorized 386, 000 words in the entire French Scrabble Dictionary in just nine weeks. However, he does not speak French. Richards' impressive feat is a useful example to show how artificial intelligence works—real AI. Both of Richard and AI take in massive amounts of data to achieve goals with unlimited memory and superman accuracy in a certain field.
The potential applications for AI are extremely exciting. Because AI can outperform humans at routine tasks—provided the task is in one field with a lot of data—it is technically capable of replacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.
But not every job will be replaced by AI. In fact four types of jobs are not at risk at all. First, there are creative jobs. AI needs to be given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like scientists, novelists and artists can. Second, the complex, strategic jobs—executives, diplomats, economists —go well beyond the AI limitation of single-field and Big Data. Then there are the as-yet-unknown jobs that will be created by AI.
Are you worried that these three types of jobs won't employ as many people as AI will replace? Not to worry, as the fourth type is much larger: jobs where emotions are needed, such as teachers, nannies and doctors. These jobs require compassion, trust and sympathy—which AI does not have. And even if AI tried to fake it, nobody would want a robot telling them they have cancer, or a robot to babysit their children.
So there will still be jobs in the age of AI. The key then must be retraining the workforce so people can do them. This must be the responsibility not just of the government, which can provide funds, but also of corporations and those who benefit most.
(1)What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To mention Nigel's feat.
C. To stress the importance of good memory.
D. To suggest humans go beyond AI in memory.
(2)Which of the following best explains "outperform" underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Be superior to
B. Be inferior to
C. Be similar to
D. Be related to (3)Which of the following jobs is the most likely to be replaced?
A. The writer.
B. The shop assistant.
C. The babysitter.
D. The psychologist.(4)Which of the following suggestions can the author give about job replacement of AI?
A. Limit the application of AI to a certain degree.
B. Get more support from the government.
C. Apply for the donation from companies.
D. Upgrade people's professional skills all the time.
【答案】(1)A
(2)A
(3)B
(4)D

故选A。

根据第二段中的“Because AI can outperform humans at routine tasks—provided the task is in one field with a lot of data”可知AI可以在日常任务中outperform人类(前提是该任务在一个涉及到大量数据的领域中;以及“it is technically capable of replacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.”

根据第三段中的“First, there are creative jobs. AI needs to be given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like scientists, novelists and artists can.”

排除A;再根据第四段中的“as the fourth type is much larger: jobs where emotions are needed, such as teachers, nannies and doctors.”

根据最后一段中的“So there will stil l be jobs in the age of AI. The key then must be retraining the workforce so people can do them.”

A while back I caught a news report on something called -couch surfing‖ and the network of trusting souls who make this phenomenon possible. They offer to put up travelers free of charge and help them on their ways. At first, it sounded unbelievable. I mean, inviting strangers into one's home for one or two nights? Give me a break.
However, I was intrigued. I decided to investigate. The only way to truly learn about this phenomenon was to dive in. So I planned a trip to Finland, a country I've always wanted to explore. I would couch surf at every stop there.
If ever any anxiety existed when stepping into the unknown, it disappeared when my first host met me at the train station. Ari looked like my idea of a typical Finn: tall and blue-eyed. Finns were also supposed to be famously reserved Ari was anything but. He was a live
wire, giving me an enthusiastic welcome and hiking with me to his apartment, where he showed me the sleeper sofa, served me tea, and engaged me in warm conversations. He also handed me a key to come and go as I pleased.
If this was what couch surfing was all about-trust and friendship-then I had gotten off to a good start. As I boarded my next train to continue my journey, I began to think about this couch-surfing idea. What urged these people to open their homes to strangers? I concluded that there was a desire to lend a hand to like-minded folks who might enrich their own lives.
Seven cities in 14 days. Seven hosts. Seven new friends. If couch surfing taught me anything, it's this: Most people are good and generous. Where will couch surfing take me next? Who knows? But I can't wait to find out.
(1)Which of the following best explains "intrigued" underlined in the second paragraph?
A. Relaxed.
B. Disgusted.
C. Interested.
D. Embarrassed.
(2)What can we know about Ari?
A. He was reserved like most Finns.
B. He talked less but he was friendly.
C. He treated the author as a friend.
D. He saw off the author at the train station.
(3)Why did people offer couch surfing to strangers?
A. To take an adventure with strangers.
B. To exchange houses for a short time.
C. To learn more about others' family lives.
D. To enrich their own lives by helping others.(4)What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Travel on Trust and Couches
B. A Free Travel in Finland
C. Experiences in Strangers' Houses
D. A Plan for Couch Surfing
【答案】(1)C
(2)C
(3)D
(4)A

What makes a person a giver or taker? The idea "give vs. take" takes shape in all interactions (互动) and relationships of our lives. We're either giving advice, making time for people, or we're on the receiving end. We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis, if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards. Actually, most matchers will try hard to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they deserve.
Is there a gender factor (性别因素) that plays a part in this?
A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles, a professor at Harvard University, focused on this question. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as an employee to discuss salary promotions. Male "employees" asked for an average salary of $146k while the females asked for only $141k. But why did they not bargain as hard as the men? Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman, I do enjoy the act of giving up my time, my knowledge, and my care and my attention to others. I don't expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I'm being taken for granted. I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one's continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So, it's safe to say I'm 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They're constantly devoting their time, sharing valuable insights(洞察力) and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path. Although they're changed the lives of many people, they rarely see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them; they're now extremely successful, well known for what they do.(1)We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.
A. most people think they are givers
B. people are not always givers or takers
C. an individual is born to be a giver or a taker
D. few differences exist between givers and takers
(2)In Adam Grant's opinion, most people ________.
A. hate takers
B. prefer giving to taking
C. enjoy relying on themselves
D. balance giving and taking
(3)Hannah's study focused on ________.
A. the role of giving and taking in jobs
B. the gender difference in giving and taking
C. the role of men and women in society
D. the salary difference between women and men
(4)The author tends to ________.
A. think acts of kindness should be valued
B. expect something in return for giving most of the time
C. take giving for granted
D. be a complete matcher
(5)What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Giving is the shortest path to success.
B. Sharing is the greatest human quality.
C. No good deed goes undone.
D. Givers are worth respecting.
【答案】(1)B
(2)D
(3)B
(4)A

One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceely's near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device. She had never driver the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. "I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train," she told the BBC.
Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it's not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards.
The problem with his argument in the book is that it's not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn't say.
It's a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable, Perhaps, but maybe it's also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors.
The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology.
If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just a. s long.
(1)What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?
A. She was not familiar with the road.
B. It was dark and raining heavily then.
C. The railway workers failed to give the signal.
D. Her GPS device didn't tell her about the crossing.
(2)The phrase "near miss" (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by ________.
A. close hit
B. heavy loss
C. narrow escape
D. big mistake
(3)Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with?
A. Modern technology is what we can't live without.
B. Digtal technology often falls short of our expectation.
C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be.
D. GPS error is not the only cause for Ceely's accident.
(4)In the writer's opinion, Stevenson's argument is ________.
A. one-sided
B. reasonable
C. puzzling
D. well-based
(5)What is the real concern of the writer of this article?
A. The major causes of traffic accidents and car thefts.
B. The human unawareness of technical problems.
C. The shortcomings of digital devices we use.
D. The relationship between humans and technology.

It was many years ago. I was a young dad sitting on the couch reading a fairy tale to my little
girl. She sat next to me with her head on my arm as I told the tale. When it came to the end I finished with those famous words: "And they lived happily ever after." As I looked over to her with her wavy(鬈曲的), brown hair and big, innocent eyes I could see the smile on her face and I never wanted it to end. Then it dawned on me that the ending of the book was what I wanted for her. I wanted her to "live happily ever after".
Still, deep in my heart I knew that this couldn't always be so. I knew that there would be times when her heart was broken. I knew there would be times when she cried in grief and I couldn't comfort her. I knew there would be times when all she felt was fear, sadness, sorrow, and despair. As I stroked her hair and smiled at her I hoped that those times would be brief and that she would have joy in her life more often than not. Living happily ever after, though, seemed out of the question.
It takes me a lot of years to realize that it is possible to live happily ever after. You just have to do it "one day at a time". Happiness you see isn't some reward that you get at the end of your journey. Happiness isn't something that depends on what life you own. Happiness is something you create in your life choice by choice and day by day.
The truth is happiness comes when you love. Love is a gift from God. It is love that mends broken hearts. It is love that heals grief. It is love that gives us joy. Choose to "live happily ever after, one day at a time".
(1)What is the author's wish to his daughter?
A. Getting a good job in the future.
B. Making many friends in her school.
C. Traveling around the world in her life.
D. Having a happy life ever after.
(2)What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. Life's meaning consists in devotion.
B. Life is always full of difficulties and challenges.
C. There are times that life goes against us.
D. Everyone has the right to obtain happiness and freedom.
(3)How to get happiness in author's opinion?
A. Reward yourself once a day.
B. Create it by yourself in your daily life.
C. Get rid of those disturbing things.
D. Take charge of your life independently.
(4)What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To show the significance of love.
B. To describe a daughter's growth.
C. To introduce the definition of love.
D. To tell a young father's experience.
【答案】(1)D
(2)C
(3)B
